Guest Reviews
- roadwarriorbbbb (10/5): Authentic Japanese ryokan experience - An authentic Japanese ryokan experience with the added convenience of being located in the heart of town, Kusatsu Naraya is an excellent choice. The rooms is spacious and clean.
One of the highlights of Kusatsu Naraya is its onsen facilities. The water, drawn from Kusatsu’s famous hot springs is therapeutic.
The kaiseki offered here was a culinary delight. The staff at Kusatsu Naraya were outstanding – attentive, polite, and always ready to help. They spoke enough English to assist international travelers.
Being located in the town center is another major advantage. Kusatsu Onsen’s iconic Yubatake is just a short walk away. Shops, cafes, and other attractions are all within easy reach, making it convenient for exploring the area.
I highly recommend it for anyone looking to immerse themselves in Japanese culture while enjoying the best of Kusatsu’s natural wonders and town life.
- Eng Kiat William (10/5): - We love staying at historic hotel. Best feature of Natalya is it's on-site onsen which is convienently accessible for hotel guests. Dining was great but they need more staff training for international guests. Checkout was a bit chaotic and inefficient with guests sitting around in the lobby waiting for the turn to be checked out (two staff at reception, and only one was doing all the checkouts). Otherwise, the hotel is convienently located close to town center and walking distance to the bus terminal, public onsens, etc.. we booked a room that overlooked the kusatsu yubatake.
- Keith (10/5): - Staff is friendly and sincerely. Room is clean and tidy. Outlook and interior design are excellent.
- Jada (8/5): - The location is great with the yubatake right around the corner. Nice ryokan with large rooms and onsens, but the building itself was not particularly exceptional. Very good, but not great considering the price. However we had several wonderful surprises for our kaiseki dinners and breakfasts. We stayed 3 nights and 2 nights towards the end of dinner a sushi chef came into our dining room and we were able to order as much sushi as we could eat. In the morning another chef came in and made individual tamago-yaki to go along with the rest of the breakfast. And the best surprise were the large individual tear drop ice igloos at one dinner with sashimi inside. Absolutely beautiful and stunning and of course the sashimi excellent.
- Jungsoo (8/5): - meals are not as good as I expected, so as the meal service.
- Verified traveler (10/5): -
- Verified traveler (10/5):
- Verified traveler (10/5):
- Verified traveler (10/5):
- Fen (8/5): - Clean and good Location and stuff Friendly,
Dinner food quality I disappointed.
- Verified traveler (10/5):
- Wei (10/5): - Service was great. Very cultureful.
- Verified traveler (10/5):
- Verified traveler (8/5): -
- Verified traveler (10/5): -
- Verified traveler (8/5): -
- Verified traveler (10/5): -
- Verified traveler (10/5): -
- 393denchai (10/5): Great !!! - Every things in this ryokan quite good , Staff in front are good and quite formal. Onsen are very special they swap lady and men room every morning and evening, who stayed only 1day can enjoy but We have been staying 2 days quite confused ,however is good. Location is great, in my photo you can see the highest tower is this ryokan, only one thing as I would like to comment is food as “grill fish” look like they did earlier before we came even we came before but fish a bit cool , otherwise are good.
- oliviamB1488XA (10/5): Best ryokan in its class - This ryokan was a fabulous experience, the rooms are spacious by Japanese standards, the tatami covers even the elevator floor, and the decor includes Japanese painting and pottery. The food is delicious. Free coffee in the lobby in the evening and morning is a perk, and the Yukata can be worn both around the ryokan and for strolls in the neighborhood. The bath is nice, but does not have a view.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Great hotel with amazing onsen! - Very clean and comfortable, nice Japanese decor, great location, and amazing onsen. Shuttle service to / from bus station is convenient. The meals can be improved however.
- Verified traveler (10/5): -
- Verified traveler (10/5): - I feel very goooood! Expensive But worth staying for one day ,
- Verified traveler (8/5): Naraya onsen - a good choice in 草津 - Good experience and it is a good onsen place I would recommend
- Verified traveler (6/5):
- Verified traveler (8/5): -
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Lovely services, Great stay, clean and comfortable room. Lovely onsen experience. But don’t expect much about food. Anyway, overall it’s great experience at Naraya.
- kazy2 (8/5): traditional ans close to yubatake - my gf invited me here for my birthday.
this ryokan is located right next to yubatake(where the hot spring come out and flow down, i dont know how to explain but its central of kusatsu). the ryokan is old style, historic and traditional. onsen was pretty good. staffs are very nice and polite.
if you wanna go snowboarding, the ski resort is 5min drive. i usually visit here for spa and snowboard. i guess this ryokan is kinda expensive but worth it!
- Verified traveler (8/5):
- Hsieh (10/5): - Very nice hotel, you can feel the hospitality of front desk and they offer very good meal as well
- kangster2016 (10/5): First time in Kusatsu. - Naraya is obviously very well known ryokan that can give you the traditional Japanese experience in the one of the premier onsen towns in Japan, Kusatsu.
There isnt much else that you can do from Onsen so you really need one day at the destination but the ryokan onsen was satisfying and everything was so clean.
- Vivian (8/5): - Professional staff, nice food, well prepared room. However, onsen is a little small but still enjoyable. Better to have vending machine if possible.
- anannitv (10/5): Charming ryokan in Town - This Japanese hotel is located in the heart of this hot spring town. It's location is perfect for Tara who ride to strolling along the city meter in the daytime or in the nighttime. Services are authentic Japanese Style and full of hospitality. The room is nice and quite spacious. It's on-sen is wonderful. We had dinner and breakfast in our private room in the restaurant, which I really delicious and well- presented. Free parking is offered but not easy to access. However, you donate a car in this charming town.
- MelodyCanada (8/5): Perfect Location - I had stayed at the hotel for one night.
Service :The hotel offers shuttle bus pick up service for guest at the bus terminal, but you need to inform them your arrival time in advance. The staffs are very helpful and can speak English, so there is no communication problem.
Also, the hotel offers free coffee for the guest to drink during morning time and tea time,
It is very hospitable.
Location: it is perfect, it is close to the sight seeing points.
Wifi; it is strong and free of charge.
Dinner and Breakfast: the hotel offers the dinner and breakfast, but it is in Japanese style , so it is not quite suitable to us.
Price: comparatively, the price is expensive.
Room: it is clean and well equipped
Onsen: inside the hotel, the onsens are quite comfortable.
If not consider about the price, it is a good place to stay during visiting Kusatsu onsen.
- Polly KWOK (8/5):
- warrenD190 (8/5): Nice choice in Kusatsu - We enjoyed a lovely stay here, with typically excellent hospitality from the staff. The location is excellent, the baths superb. The food is good but nothing extraordinary. You can go on the cheap and find less expensive ryokan but if you want a most pleasant onsen experience, the price is well-worth it.
- NadiaKishlan (8/5): Beautiful Onsen Ryokan - We were booked to stay in this ryokan through a travel agency we engaged. Absolutely no regrets! Location of ryokan was right smack in the middle of the onsen town square. Although staff struggled to speak English, they were still very warm & tried their best to communicate with us. We also booked the private onsen & the staff was very relaxed with the timing you get to stay in the onsen which is nice (unlike another ryokan we went to who were so strict with the timings). The Kaiseki served was lovely, shame it wasn't to our taste so we struggled with the food bit; but this is just a personal preference I'm sure if you enjoy that type of cuisine you'd love it!
- Apple_HK (8/5): Location is great and the onsen is really nice - We travelled to Kusatsu on a bus from Karuizawa so I wanted to stay in the centre of the town to avoid too much walking. Naraya thus is a logical choice since it is just next to the Yubatake. It is a typical Japanese ryokan with professional service. For the price we paid, the food is all right but not special. Coming to Kusatsu has been for its famous onsen water and one would not get disappointed. The outdoor onsen is really nice.
- bixierg (8/5): Pricey but nice - Perfectly located very close to the main attraction. Service is very good and also foreigners will feel comfortable. Don't worry about your car because they have a valet parking service.
Room was big and very nice, same was the food. Hot Spring was OK but nothing special. Considering the location, season and hotel standard not overpriced but pricey.
- 825jamesv (10/5): You can't do better - Kusatsu Onsen (Hot Spring) has a wide variety of places to stay, but if you want to treat yourself to one of the great ryokan in town, you can't do much better than the Naraya. Located literally 1 minute from the Yubatake, "hot water cooling field", in the center of town, you are near everything, but away from the noise of the tourists who gather night and day. We decided to splurge on one of the big rooms, which has a connected tatami room, a separate sitting room with 4 chairs, and a third room with two singles. There are two sinks and more mirrors than anyone could need in a separate room. The main point of going to Kusatsu is to go into the large baths in the hotel, which alternate between use by men and women twice a day, so that you can enjoy 4 smaller baths one time and then, after the switch is made, 2 larger baths in the other. Meals were served in private rooms downstairs, which makes it perfect for people who want to relax, eat, and have Nihonshu after an afternoon bath.
- kingcolt2016 (6/5): Should have paid more for better - Kusatsu, like Arima, is a hill area clustered with many onsen hotels. It is always difficult to pick a hotel in area of this kind. This time, I picked Naraya because its long history looked attractive to me.
One of the staff members was able to speak fluent English, we had no problem when we checked in. The hotel is so close to the centre of Kusatsu Onsen, namely, the Yubatake. It was not necessary for us to walk upslope/downslope when we went to walk around the Yubatake and admire the night scenery there.
The hot spring is all right to me. It is hot and has a mild sulphurous smell. The open-air bath of this hotel is not really open-air, it is at most an enclosed outdoor bath with canopy. This is not my cup of tea.
Our room was an average and normal Japanese-style one, while our dinner was quite a dissatisfactory one. I think it failed in both quantity and taste. After dinner, we had to go out to add fuel to our stomachs with skewers. Maybe I should be the one to blame because I elected not to pay more for a better room, better meal or even a better hotel.
BEST IN TOWN - I had a very great time in Naraya, Great service, delicious food, convenient location and comfortable room. I highly recommend this hotel to everyone who wants to go Kusatsu.
I also would like to share my unforgettable experience in here.I and my parents figured out that we forgot our stuff in hotel after we left Kusatsu and arrived in Ueno.
We called Naraya and found a guy who can speak English at next morning. They found our stuff and sent the pics by email, and then send to us free of charge by the next day before we back to our country.
Good service I would like to say.
Will come back again definitely.
- marciazy (10/5): Love the place. - Stayed there for a night last week. The room and the onsen are decent, the food so-so (as said in other reviews), but all the same I love the place as the staff there are great. You can feel that they really care- if you enjoy yourself there, if you need any help, or if the yukata you are wearing is too long/too short (which can be uncomfortable). Somehow they manage to remember everyone’s face- whenever I’m going out of the hotel, someone would pass me my shows without asking my name or room number. When I checked out, I left a luggage in my room without even realizing it; luckily and unexpectedly, the driver came all the way to the bus terminal, found me in the bus and returned it to me. This literally saved my trip! Would love to go there again.
- Ping-Hue (8/5): - good Hotel location and service
- 934mab (6/5): Nice location, nice onsen. - Located about 3hrs train-ride from Tokyo, Kusatsu is one of my favorite onsen spots in Japan.
Naraya has opened it's door for nearly 140 years.
It was my second stay there. My first trip was back in 2008 or 2009. The only difference and complaints were food and service. It was way better first time. This year, the quality of both food and service was gone down the hill.
I never expect good seafood in Kusatsu. It's far from the sea and deep in the mountains. Veggies are good. Fish is ok.
Same at Naraya.
Well, it wasn't that bad. I'm just saying it was ok.
I could pay more to have better dinner.
The room was mediocre, nothing special because we didn't book superior suites.
Pros are that they have fabulous onsen hot tabs.
Location is the best.
- SingaporeSnow (10/5): Recommended for a stay in Kusatsu - Naraya is a pleasant and comfortable ryokan. The staff are all warm, polite and hospitable and the food is of good quality, with just the right quantity. The onsen area is small but sufficient. The price is reasonable and the location is very close to the famous yubatake. The gift shop has a wide range of omiyage (souvenirs including food products), I bought the smoked eggs to try and enjoyed the novel flavour as I like my eggs hard-boiled, albeit that this was to a rather dry extent. I would recommend this ryokan if you are planning on staying overnight in Kusatsu.
Only two minor gripes I have are: lack of wifi in the rooms - there was only wifi access in the lobby, and location of the toilet and sink near the balcony which made washing up in the morning a very cold experience in autumn (I can't imagine what it would be like in winter!).
