Guest Reviews
- Linda (10/5): Highly recommended a stay - Absolutely fantastic stay, sparkling clean and spacious room, stayed in the coach house, well maintained and comfy room. Had food in restaurant and Alfredo was a gracious host. All staff very friendly and looked after me being on my own. Will definitely be staying again and going to visit restaurant.
- Heather (8/5): - The Inn is quaint, clean and the restaurant downstairs is a nice bonus. Parking was a challenge. It's a busy area and nearby street parking was not available. Pay parking is a 7 minute walk away and costs 25£ for overnight. Something to keep in mind if you are driving.
- David (10/5): - Staff were very friendly for the short time I saw them. Room was spacious and clean. Only 15 minutes walk to the city center, would definitely stay here again
- james (10/5): - Great property and very friendly staff
- Phil (10/5): Elegant - Very nice hotel. Clean comfortable ensuite with shower. No bath but I'm great with that..
- Alejandro (10/5): - Great owners and staff
- Colin (4/5): - Not in same property has advertised! Very basic all round!
Would not recommend for the price.
- Gary (8/5): - The room was small but cosy, shower was amazing, overallI would recommend the hotel.
- Susan (10/5): Great nights sleep - Beautiful decorated rooms . Very comfortable.
- Angela (8/5): - Small hotel above an Italian restaurant. lovely room, very friendly and helpful staff and brilliant location for Sophia Gardens. Only drawback was that the walls seemed a bit thin and you could hear what was going on above you and especially downstairs in the restaurant when they were moving tables in the morning.
Would highly recommend though.
- June (10/5): - Realpg nice room walking distance to town centre
- ADRIAN (10/5): LUUVLY HIDDEN GEM - WONDERFUL PLACE, VERY FRIENDLY HAPPY STAFF, CLEAN MODERN & CONTEMPORARY ATTENTION TO DETAIL RESTAURANT & ROOMS.
NOSTAGIC ITALIAN.
A mini fridge in room would’ve been perfect.
- Katherine (8/5): - Really friendly. It was a nice, clean room with very comfortable beds. It's a shame they don't offer a breakfast option.
Would recommend and stay here again.
- Verified traveler (10/5): A really lovely independent option - This is a great family run Italian restaurant with some very comfortable rooms above this. The food and staff were lovely and it was a good distance from the city centre.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Happy - Friendly, clean, convieneint, will stsy again!
- Suzanne (10/5): Beautiful hotel above posh Italian Restaurant - I was greeted and given a glass of water whilst waiting - as I had walked from the train station with a suitcase. I was then shown up to my room and the host explained clearly about how to use the key/key fob and what time I would need to use the key for the front door when they close it at night. The carpets are beautifully deep and nice to walk on and the hotel has only just been decorated so everything is new. The en-suite bathroom is beautiful and the shower works well. I am pleased with my stay. If I come here again I may use the Italian Restaurant downstairs!
- Ken (8/5): - The room was okay, but the Italian food was to die for. Best seafood pasta Ive had in a long time.
- Manisha (8/5): - Happy with everything
- Joanne (10/5): - The room was clean and comfortable and very accessible to Bute Park, restaurants, cafes and the city centre. The owners were super helpful and looked after me very well. I really enjoyed my stay and would stay here again if ever I was in Cardiff.
- Natalie (10/5): - A very good location to stay for a trip to Wales Capital
- Ralph (8/5): - No breakfast or facilities
- Lesley (8/5): - we eaten there before, lovely old building, we stay one night for a family meeting
- Helene (4/5): - Good location and nice staff. Sadly for us though the mattress and pillows were so uncomfortable, the noice from the street was non-stop all night and the room was very cold. We did not have a good night sleep!
- Vicki (6/5): - Room was in coaching house to rear of property which was nice and quiet but shower and bathroom arrangements were odd. Room was cold and had to ask for heating to be turned on.
- mark (8/5): - Property was ok.no problems at all
- Sarah (10/5): - Fantastic hotel, great location.
- Penny (6/5): Not a vegan-friendly hotel. - The room was compact and provided me with everything I needed for my one night stay except for non-dairy milk for hot drinks. I asked about it when checking in but was informed that they didn't provide it and there was no offer to get me some either. I found this quite shameful in a day and age and era when we, as a human race, are responsible for the destruction of our planet and are being encouraged to switch to plant based diets. This apparently is still to filter through to service providers who simply do not care.
- E L (8/5): Lovely hotel and restaurant - Really lovely hotel, stayed in the Coach House, lovely decor and surroundings, very pretty court yard. We found the bed a little bit uncomfortable as it was very soft. We were wishing they did breakfast, the food in the restaurant is amazing and I'd imagine they would do fantastic breakfast. Lovely place to stay, highly recommend!
- Steven (8/5): - It was nice and pleasant. Quite
- Richard (8/5): - Great location easy walk to the principality stadium. No parking however public parking about 5-7 minutes away.
- Anne (4/5): - Looked lovely from outside. Old and traditional, well kept.
Rang for reception 4 times before anyone came and were handed a key, told where our room was.
Room VERY basic, cold and uninviting - such a disappointment after the outside! Pics show the entirety of wall adornments ! Kettle didn’t work properly either 🙄. Cheap, nasty tea and coffee. Couldn’t get WiFi and NO info on how to. Couldn’t access any staff to ask until evening and still didn’t work.
Shower too really nice but tiny beds, small quilts, Ill fitting windows so that EVERY sound and the smokers smoke came in til early hours of the morning😢. Curtains Ill fitting so light shone in from night light too. Worse night in a hotel for a long time.
No breakfast available at all.
This is obviously just an easy money maker with no effort while they concentrate on the restaurant ( which was really nice )
Definitely DONT recommend, a shame as the owners seem nice .
- Peter (10/5): Great stay - Remember mom was cost abs the bed was comfy. Good nights sleep. Hotel was quiet too
- David (8/5): Clean pleasant room - Clean pleasant room with large walk-in shower. Located behind their Italian restaurant so having to go through the restaurant to get to/from the rooms in the coach-house at the back is a minor inconvenience.
They are not providing a proper Breakfast service at the moment (due to Coronavirus) - only a bag which you need to collect from the restaurant. Both days the contents were the same - cheese/ham sandwich, banana, small orange juice and a yogurt - a bit disappointing.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - It would be good to do something about the extractor fan in toilet. It goes on far too long once you left the toilet which meant a disturbed nights sleep as it’s very loud Breakfast more like a lunch pack. Would have been nicer to have something like a croissant and small pot jam than a warm sand which. Other than that had a lovely stay you have lovely friendly staff and room was nice thank you
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Very friendly and helpful staff . Food on sat night in restaurant was excellent . Breakfast was ok but could have been a little hotter . Would stay again .
- Verified traveler (8/5): Not really a hotel - This 'hotel' is really a restaurant which also has hotel like rooms. You have to knock to enter and go into the restaurant to sign in. We were then taken out, across a courtyard to an external coach house like building. As it was pouring down all the time we were there this wasnt pleasant. To get out we had to through the restaurant, by unlocking some French windows in an extension standing in the rain between an awning and the building as we did so. My colleagues room was very cold and the hair dryer didn't work. There were no menus for breakfast. We left late as the rain had become snow and blocked some roads but one of the staff walked straight into our rooms without knocking, before checkout time. Still staff were helpful.Good showers.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - Nothing! No parking ! Not a good room, service terriable
- Verified traveler (4/5): Disappointing - Hairs in sink and bed. Bed linen old and worn. No staff around 8am and no breakfast available. Expected reasonable 3 to 4 star quality for price, but would struggle to rate it 2 star. Definitely would not recommend accommodation to anyone nor would contemplate staying again.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Well equipped, character, friendly staff, clean and tidy, brilliant Italian restaurant.
Parking on street is tricky. Restricted breakfast hours.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Good location to walk into town. Popular spot but also close to pubs and Cricket Grounds which causes both a noise issue and a parking challenge.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - I was very impressed with the onsite Italian restaurant at the Elgano. The food (i had pizza) was excellent. The service & welcome were also very friendly. The room i stayed in was at the back of the restaurant across a neat courtyard in the onsite coach house. It was peaceful & relaxing despite being in the vibrant area of Pontcanna.
I have no negative thoughts to pass on as everything was great.!
- Verified traveler (8/5): - The Italian restaurant connected to the rooms had excellent food. The property is extremely close to Sofia Gardens cricket ground which was our reason for being in Cardiff, so it was situated very conveniently.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Great value for money. Very clean and tidy. Friendly staff
- Caroline (10/5): - Good value and friendly hosts. Good breakfast.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Comfortable stay. - The staff were very friendly and the food was very good, the chef also catered for my food allergy. The room was large and comfortable and clean apart from one of the twin beds had crumpled pillows and hairs under the pillows. The room could have done with a bedside table and it was quite noisy as it was at the front of the hotel. There was an issue with the bathroom light but I sorted that as the isolation switch had been turned off above the bathroom door. There was no information in the room about breakfast times, the free WiFi code or checking out times. When I arrived it was about 7pm and the restaurant was very busy there isn’t a proper reception so I had to go into the restaurant with my luggage so I didn’t think to ask about the times or WiFi especially as I was going out soon to a concert. I did inform the receptionist the next morning about the bathroom light and the hairs in the bed. Also the hotel doesn’t have parking but if you’re lucky you can find a space on the street.
- Megan (4/5): Don't recommend. - Checkin was weird. Walked into a hallway with a staircase and window to a restaurant. That seemed their priority. Checking in felt like we were interupting dinner. Bathroom light did not work. We had to go into the restaurant to inform them about the light. They told us it gets confused (motion detection) and that we just needed to close and reopen the door. That didn't work. The light came on and off at will even when we were not in the bathroom. And when we were in the bathroom, no light, and of course, no window. We had to use our phone flashlight to see.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Needs a couple of tweaks. - Staff were very friendly and the hotel is in a great location. Room was ckean and tidy and styled well. Unfortunately the bed wasnt very comfortable, sound traveled from the staff cleaning in the conservatory late into the night and the motion sensor bathroom light had a life of it's own. Breakfast was tasty.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - People are friendly. Location is also good. Parking is not given for the people who book the room through Expedia
- Linda (10/5): - Excellent and amazing food.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Very nice room, clean and well equipped in a good location for central Cardiff but while we appreciate how hard the staff work to run the very good restaurant the same care wasn't extended to the breakfast and to the overnight guests.
- Verified traveler (2/5): - Worst run down hotel I've ever been to. Rooms are old, everything is cold, heating doesn't work and the staff certainly will not to anything about it. Nothing positive to say about this hotel. Staff were INCREDIBLY rude. Most cannot speak english, the ONE manager that can, is the most rude woman I have ever came across in my entire life, and she was not there most of the time. When I complained about this very fact, her reply was 'I don't have time to always be here to serve people', doesn't really feel like these people should be in the hospitality business at all. Whatever the reason that you are looking into booking this property, (most likely cheap price) but also the pictures etc, move on, you'll never be so disappointed. If there is any good review I am strongly inclined to believe that it will be someone who is a family member or friend of the owners.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The rooms were clean, newly decorated and comfortable. I had a good welcome and was very pleased to find that breakfast was included the next day! The location was ideal, around a 10 minute walk to Cardiff centre and easy to find. It was also lovely and quiet. I would 100% return.
- Julia D (10/5): - The room I had was at the top of a carriage house with a beautiful view of the townhouse and the Elgano restaurant. It was very quiet and had all the amenities a visitor could ask for. The location was perfect for a quick walk to Cardiff castle and on a bus route. I was even able to walk to the train station from there.
- Marie (10/5): - Comfortable enough and slept well. Close to city centre and the flower show.
- Roger (6/5): - TV didn't work properly, which may have been due to poor reception. Did not mention problem to the staff
- BH (6/5): My advice: Check-in, sleep, leave. - Hotel is combined with restaurant but it is clear where the preference is. Despite having breakfast included in the price, the restaurant was closed for guests in the morning but was full the previous evening. There was no staff on hand when checking out and reception was closed - I left my key on the shelf and won't be back.
- David (8/5): - Shower wasn't very warm but otherwise a nice B&B.
- Leah (10/5): Home sweet home - Wonderful place with great rooms and an excellent Italian restaurant! Quiet neighbourhood!
- Verified traveler (4/5): More of a shelter for the night - Was difficult to find someone reception at times. Room was hot, no fan or AC. Bedsheets looked old and had bleach on them. Towels didn't look clean. We were not informed of house keeping so came back to see someone had moved our things around which led to irritation and things getting mixed up between myself and my friends. I mean one of us found our clothes under the pillow and another one of us found our make up things mixed together. Also no tv remote and quite dusty.
- Elaine (2/5): Poor room, poor service - I stayed at this hotel due to its proximity to the Principality Stadium where I was attending a music gig. This was the only good thing about the hotel. The group were in the city for the 2 nights I was staying at the hotel which accounted for a hike in price from £120 per night to £250 per night. The room was small, noisy due to being on a busy main road, and extremely hot. When a fan was requested I was advised all fans had been taken by other rooms but I was promised one by 11am the next day, this never materialised. The heat was unbearable for me. The "free" breakfast was small, amounting to 1 x sausage, bacon, egg, half tomato, tbsp baked beans and mushrooms, 3 x toast between 2 people. There was cereal, yoghurt and fruit available but I chose not to partake of these thinking the cooked version would suffice. Although there is a restaurant within the hotel, I chose to eat elsewhere due to the prices. The hotel car park, although very secure, is limited in size. The hotel allows access to the locked area but unfortunately my car was positioned closest to the hotel and therefore needed all others vehicles to move before I could get out! Overall, the position to the Stadium was reasonable however the lack of service will ensure I never choose this hotel again.
- Mel (8/5): Nice hotel not far from the centre of Cardiff - We stayed in the annexe which is behind the Italian restaurant in a small courtyard. The room was quite small and the bathroom tiny, but very clean. It could do with bedside tables but otherwise the room was fine.
- Verified traveler (4/5): No parking , - told the night before my stay I could park my car earlier than the check in time, but when I arrived they said I could'nt, but I couldn't of got my car in through the gates anyway as not enough room to manouvoure as vehicles parked in very narrow lane into car park. Breakfast was dis organised, I put coffee in my mug with teabag as they had put coffee in water jug and water in coffee jug! I had asked for toast with my bacon , bacon arrived but had to wait 10 minutes for toast to arrive ! when it did it was white not even slightly brown.went to top up tea mug with hot water but the jug was empty, orange juice jug also empty.
- Kieron (8/5): Nice but not great - Lovely friendly Hotel, little disappointed in the Breakfast as it was well below the standard of the rest of the Hotel
- Sam (6/5): Good location for cricket, not fancy but no probs - Really convenient location for the cricket (and walking distance from the middle of town / train station etc).
Hotel is nothing fancy, but provides a room to sleep in with no problems.
WiFi worked fine. Breakfast was quite standard (small buffet + cooked plate of food).
My room was strange in layout, having 3 single beds - but temperature was fine, and bathroom all worked without a problem.
Still uses old-style keys on the doors (no codes etc).
- Zaak (10/5): Lovely Hotel - Near the City Centre. - There was a fantastic room and restaurant, and lovely staff. I arrived and was greeted, and then shown to my room, which was very pleasant. I was welcomed with a clean room, ease of access and plenty of light. The room was as to be expected, a little small, but for what its worth, it was fantastic.
The night sleep was fantastic also, the bed was comfy, and the shower was excellent.
The parking situation - there is none. It is street parking, not a big deal, but you have to find a spot early in the morning or late at night, or move your car at some point. .
All in all, lovely hotel, definitely would go again!
- Elena (10/5): Nice spacious room, very comfortable. - My kids and I had a comfortable stay at this B&B. The staff were friendly. The room was spacious and very clean.
I would definitely recommend it.
- Salvatore (2/5): closer to an hostel than an hotel - pro:
- cleaning was acceptable
cons:
- Room 8 was very small
- strong smell of chemical bathroom in the room
- hospital like bathroom
- furniture had painting coming off
- extremely noisy. coulndt sleep as walls are basically made of paper and doors banging all night long
Worse experience ever.
- Verified traveler (8/5): nice hotel and clean - I liked it only issue was passing tru the restaurant if i had to get my quest to visit me
- Karen (10/5): Great location and very friendly staff - Lovely stay at Elgano. Great location in easy walking distance from Bute Park, Sophia Gardens bus interchange and city. Simona and staff were all very welcoming - where else can you order your morning coffee in Wales in Italian? I'd definitely stay again!
- Tom (2/5): Do not book here - I am unable to review the hotel due to the staff not letting me in as the said it was to late to check in. Even tho I booked it 10 mins before. I had to sleep in my van as I was stranded. They also refused me a refund and the staff where extremely rude.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Nice hotel. - Room has all you need. Ours was a little warm. Parking could be an issue but did not effect us.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - great location - pub around corner - sofia gardens absolutely beautiful - boat trip to cardiff bay- you can see the castle from the grounds and it is about five minutes walk away. The Elgano is an Italian establishment with restaurant downstairs, which was fully booked on arrival. The car park is at the back of the building but it is quite small and you will have to be a good driver to get in and out ,especially with a big car. We would book again but also book the restaurant which looks very good.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Convent and Easy. - The hotel suited our needs completely as it was close to our wedding venue and included breakfast. The bed was quite uncomfortable though (very hard), and the mirror on the bathroom door made a really loud noise whenever you open it waking the other person up! Could be cleaner/updated a bit, but overall a good stay for the price we paid.
- Rupert (10/5): - Great friendly little hotel... we stayed in the coach house at the back. Not a huge room.... and it overlooked the Welsh national hockey centre - not quite sure if that is good or bad! But everything we needed was there. VERY impressed with the food, )we were lucky to get a table on a Saturday night)
- peter (10/5): Elgano Hotel Cardiff - Very good Friendly family atmosphere.
- Stephen (10/5): Friendly Warm Helpful & Accommodating - Great location, walking distance to Cardiff Castle, and great pubs. The Elgano Italian restaurant on the ground floor served excellent food. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. Breakfast service ends at 8:30. The first morning we were an hour late for breakfast, but the chef happily made us a full English breakfast. The car parking at the back of the building is tight, but the staff would always help us find enough space. We would definitely stay at the Elgano again.
- francesca davie (10/5): - Amazing staff, really friendly and helpful. Food was also amazing.
- Lyn (10/5): Quiet friendly central hotel/restaurant.Car park. - Although this was my first visit, from the moment I was greeted at the entrance to the secure car park it felt like being a visit with old friends. There was the best sort of thoughtful personal service throughout my stay, even helping with my car after I had checked out.
. Although they were clearly busy and working hard, the atmosphere around the hotel and in the dining room was always relaxed and happy as well as efficient and well organised. I ate in the restaurant three times during my five day stay. There was a wide choice of food and drink on the Italian menu and each meal I had was delicious and well presented. Many of the other diners were clearly regular customers.
I certainly intend to stay here again any time I am in Cardiff, and to recommend it to my friends.
- Gina (2/5): - for the amount paid the breakfast was really poor hotel a little out from the centre
- Verified traveler (8/5): Nice family hotel in good location - Italian run hotel. Nice food, friendly staff. Nothing more to add.
