Guest Reviews
- Kenneth (10/5): Would stay again! - Loved it. Staff, location, room, food, onsen, everything was great. Would definitely stay again. Wifi a little choppy, but, I'm not there for the wifi.
- 百合子 (8/5): 別世界 - 女将ご主人のお人柄。

温泉街のお湯が全体的に熱いようです。
- Virginia (10/5): A great place to stay in Shibu Onsen. - It was our first Ryokan and the staff helped explain everything and were friendly and helpful throughout our stay. And the futon beds were much more comfortable than I was expecting. This location has access to the 9 public onsens in town.

- Dorota (10/5): Must stay if you visit Japan! - We had a wonderful stay at Ichinoyu Katei in Yamanouchi and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for an authentic and relaxing Japanese experience.
The onsen facilities were a real highlight. Not only does the hotel have its own baths, but you can also book a private onsen for a more peaceful experience. On top of that, at check-in you’re given a key that lets you access several nearby public onsens in the village, all within a very short walking distance. It really adds to the charm of staying in the area and makes onsen-hopping incredibly easy and enjoyable.
The location is excellent as well. It’s very close to Yamanouchi Station and the famous Snow Monkey Park, and the hotel even provides a free shuttle service to both, which made getting around completely hassle-free.
We also loved the traditional touches throughout the stay. The hotel provides yukata outfits, and it was lovely to see that most guests wear them around the village—it really adds to the atmosphere. The breakfast was a fantastic traditional Japanese spread, beautifully presented and very satisfying. We didn’t have dinner at the hotel, which is honestly our only regret, especially since everything else was such high quality. That said, there are plenty of great restaurant options nearby, so you won’t go hungry.
What truly stood out was the staff. Everyone was incredibly attentive, warm, and welcoming, making us feel comfortable from the moment we arrived.
Overall, a memorable and authentic stay. The only thing we would change is making sure to try the hotel dinner next time! Nothing
- Pamela (10/5): Lovely Stay with Onsen - I absolutely loved this hotel. It is a very traditional Japanese hotel that feels modern, well maintained, clean, and just plain lovely. You do not have a shower in your room but the onsite onsen is all you need and not to be missed. If the water is too hot, a cool water line is provided to easily cool it down. We booked just the room - no food. They had a handy map for places to eat. Highly recommend! Nothing! Top notch hotel.

- Joey3105 (10/5): Nice hotel - Nice location, lovely staff and nice food. The room was beautifull and nice and warm. Nothing
- Fallet (10/5): -
- Frances (8/5): We loved our stay here and the quality of the food was amazing - Lovely staff, great location, exceptional food
- VG (10/5): - It was amazing, location, staff, rooms, beds, onsens, everything about the experience was fantastic!!
Highly recommend. The pillows were hard
- Stephane (10/5): Exceptional - Ichinoyu Katei is a great ryokan, the staff is very helpful and kind, the rooms are great and very comfy.
- Daniel (10/5): Exceptional -
- Vitaliy (9/5): Superb -
- Sarah (9/5): Superb -
- ???? (6/5): - 後から食事頼まなくて、困りました。
- Mi (10/5): Exceptional - Breakfast, very very nice stuff, clean rooms, amazing experience with onsens I cant think of anything
- Valerio (10/5): Very nice Ryokan in a small thermal village - The staff was incredibly nice. We got a free bag as a present and they even personally drove us to the nearby station. The Japanese style is very beautiful and the breakfast and dinner were great. It is all seasonall, traditional, Japanese food, so you need to be prepared for all sort of dishes. We loved every single one!
Additionally, with the key you get from the Ryokan, you can enter 9 different Onsens. They are all believed to heal different things. If you want to stay in the village for a longer time, there isn't really a lot to do or see there. It's great for the Onsen and it's a cute village, but if you're looking for a lively place this village could not be your first choice.
- Tu (9/5): A really delightful stay - Outstanding experience! The staffs were incredibly kind and accommodating, and the facilities were very new and well kept. Despite our late arrival at 8 pm due to a missed train, they went above and beyond by arranging a private pickup for us and keeping our dinner warm in a private room until we arrived. They even noticed that my yukata was too big and kindly assisted me in finding a better fit. The onsen is impeccably clean and stocked with all the necessary accessories. The outdoor onsen is definitely my personal favorite.
- Marianne (10/5): Exceptional -
- Jibesh (10/5): The owner and the staff were extremely friendly and spoke enough English for us to understand. You will not regret stayi - Great property, rooms were big and had all the amenities. Showers were in the onset so you did have to use the public showers next to the onsen. Great way to get everyone in the Onsen. Authentic Japanese food for breakfast and dinner. Loved it!!
- Lai Hong (10/5): - 服務認真,態度親切。
- Anonymous (8/5): Very good -
- David (10/5): A fantastic experience of authentic Japan - Everything. From pick up at the train station to arrival with our names on the board outside. The room was wonderful and the staff were so helpful. Getting dressed in the traditional clothes with the guidance of the staff made us feel special. The evening meal was a treat and the following mornings breakfast was great. Nothing
- Verified traveler (8/5): - 全体的に清潔感があってよかったです。裸足で廊下の畳の上を歩いていても気持ちよかったです。
- Ooyama-searls (10/5): Great hotel, and great experience. - The staff was friendly and helpful. The town was what you would want from a hot springs town experience. The shuttle service offered was very nice as they drove us to the snow monkey park the day we arrived and also drove us to the train stain when we checked out. No complaints
- Sarah (10/5): Staying here was one of the highlights of our entire Japan trip - Staying here was one of the highlights of our entire trip. The staff were so kind and personable (spoke English well) and really went out of their way to make us feel welcome. They patiently helped us to understand new aspects of Japanese culture. We loved the light Kimono the hotel provided for us to wear around and it was such a unique experience getting to walk around to the different Onsen. The meal service is worth paying for if you really want to experience many different Japanese foods. It is served as small “Tapas” and we got to try sooo many things. It changes every day on what they offer. One of the soups served was one of my favorite meals of the entire trip. Please note: this was our first time in Asia and we learned breakfast is not the same concept as in the U.S. They did provide espresso, but really the breakfast is another full meal that Americans would traditionally eat more for a late lunch or dinner. This was not a problem, but worth noting if you are ignorant like us! Another point worth mentioning, this was probably the cleanest hotel we have ever stayed at. They clearly take so much pride in their business and I could not recommend it enough. Although different from a western style bed of course the Japanese futons in the room were very comfortable. Lastly, the hotel provided a shuttle service to/from the train station and it was very easy to get to the Monkey Park. We stayed in Spring and it was an absolutely incredible experience to see all of the monkeys with their babies. Really wracking my brain here, but I really can’t think of anything! Would absolutely stay again.
- Crosby (10/5): Exceptional - Authentic Japanese experience.
- aurora (10/5): - What a gem! Shibu Onsen Ichinoyu Katei is an experience in itself. A short ride from Yudanaka train station, this tradițional ryokhan is excellent. As soon as you arrive you will be greated by the hotel manager (okamisan) who is attentive and will answer any questions. Dinner and breakfast were included in the price and the food was amazing. Traditional food was prepared with attention to the details and served by lovely staff. Be punctual. Dinner at 630 and breakfast at 730. There are nine public onsen which can be accessed by a key you will receive at the hotel and the hotel has its own onsen, one inside and one outside with a view of the montainous horizon. Room is trafitional japanese. Confortable sleep. The snowmonkey park is not far and you can get a lift from the hotel and will be dropped off nearby the park. You will the walk about 15 min to the entrance, hiking through the gorgeous forest with extremely tall trees and hot springs. The snowmonkeys are adorable. Amazing memories.
- Jack (10/5): Lovely ryokan and onsen in a pretty mountain village very close to the Monkey Park. Great staff! - Our host picked us up at the station upon arrival and upon departure, dropped us off at the Monkey Park and delivered our luggage to the station. Nice!
- Boris (10/5): - We stayed at Ichinoyu Katei for one night and had an excellent experience. Futons were very comfortable, the breakfast in the morning was in the traditional Japanese style. There are two areas on the upper floor (gender-separated) with two hot baths, one indoors and one outdoors in each area. We were given the key to visit the town's public baths. The staff were very friendly and took care of us. They do speak sufficient English. Would definitely stay again.
- Nichole (10/5): Exceptional -
- Gleeson (10/5): Exceptional -
- Karen (8/5): Picturesque onsen town and a lovely little ryokan - Quaint location on a picturesque street full of people walking in yukatas and going to baths. The food was delicious and the staff were very friendly. The rooms did not have black out shades so it was a bit bright at night with street lighting coming into the room. while the street was very quiet, it could still keep light sleepers up.
- wang firn (10/5): excellent ryotan - futon was v comfortable and service impeccable.
- Clarice (10/5): First Trip to Yudanaka Nagano to Snow Money Town - This is our first trip to see the snow monkey park at Yudanaka-Nagano, along the way we decided to include an onsen stay .
This hotel at Shibu Onsen Inchinoyu Katei offers free roundabout shuttle from/to Yudanaka station and hotel. However, you will need to make call arrangement with the help from the native jap staff from tourist information counter located at Yudanaka station. Do make use of google translate to help you in the process as the native jap has minimum understanding of english. You can also pay a visit to the snow monkey park using the bus service (for snow monkey 2 days pass) and it is a short bus journey. For convenience of travelling light, it is recommended that you temporarily deposit your bags at station and it is 500 yen for baggage deposit. Note that you will need to walk up the trekking pathway to snow monkey park and it will be 40 mins on foot from where the bus alights you at the bus stop.
The overall experience for the hotel onsen is an eye opener as you get to experience local traditional jap food and culture. The food is more to a healthier diet and taste. Service is excellent from a warm welcome by front desk to the servers at their kitchen. They provide extra mile service and care to the customers. Do enquire with them on the do's and don't 's for first timer use of onsen. Do not overly soak yourself in the hot waters as your body might not be able to take it.
- Eugenio (10/5): Exceptional -
- Mihoko (10/5): Wonderful place - Staff were so nice and kind. The place was great and in the great location. We definitely want to come back and recommend people. The hot tub was too hot.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Loved the staff and room. The showers are with the Onsen so it’s a little strange as a American used to so much privacy but luckily there was only one time there was another women out of the three nights we stayed. Food is all Japan style but amazing. Loved our stay
- Verified traveler (10/5): - I loved my stay here. The staff were such a delight and the rooms were beautiful. The hotel is located in a beautiful traditional settings and staff were happy to point or take you in the right direction.
- Elizabeth (10/5): Amazing traditional Ryokan!!! - This hotel was AMAZING!!! The whole area was great, we did the whole 9 Onsen thing, had the Kaiseki dinner and breakfast the next morning (there was coffee!!!) and then went to see the snow monkeys (which were probably my favorite part of the entire trip). The staff was absolutely perfect, extremely helpful and did even more than we could ask for. It took a bit of effort to get up here (check out the shibu onsen website for train dets) but was completely worth it. We would definitely stay here again. Also, when you get to the train station in Shibu, go to the information kiosk and tell them you'd like them to call Ichinoyu to come pick you up - apparently this is totally normal. They came about 5 minutes later to drive us to the hotel. And then the next morning they drove us up to the snow monkeys. All free. Absolutely stay here, it will totally make your trip!!!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Everything you could possibly want from a traditional Japanese inn. Everything was second to none. A real cultural experience. Can’t really put into words how special this place is
- Verified traveler (8/5): Lovely family owned ryokan - This was a lovely family owned ryokan that is very convenient & cozy for seeing the snow monkeys and having an onsen experience.
The staff bent over backwards to help and spoke a little English. I would recommend getting meals included as the food was very good, had a lot of variety and was high quality keiseki cuisine.
The rooms had Japanese kotatsu or heating tables in them and were warm and quiet. There is no shower in them, only toilet and sink. You have to use the public shared female or male bath with onsen in the hotel, or use one of the public onsens on the street. This hotel is very conveniently located on the famous onsen street and you get a master key to experience all the onsens located on this street each purported to have different healing properties. This is a lovely experience not to be missed!
- Agnes (10/5): - Great ryokan experience for kaiseki cuisine and onsen hoping !
- Denise (10/5): - Great service the owners are very helpful and friendly. I would stay here again. The Japanese style room was great and the outdoor bath on the roof was great on a cold snowy night
- Matthew (10/5): Best place I've ever stayed - didn't want to leave - My favourite hotel in Japan, with my favourite host and in my favourite location. The ryokan is square in the middle of Shibu Onsen, perfect for visiting the public onsens. And if you feel shy, not only does it have its own hot spring bath, there is even a private one. The rooms are huge, warm and comfortable, with your own dining area views onto the quaint street. The shuttle from Yudanaka stops about 100m from it too, which also takes you up to the amazing monkey park in 20 minutes.
- Lian Hoe (10/5): Place for Onsen lovers - Nice kaiseki dinner and breakfast was served. Had free use of small private bath.
Great place for onsen lovers as guests have free access to 9 different onsen all over the little village.
Village is next to narrow road up to snow monkey park
- dal (10/5): Japan 100 years ago - Innkeepers were excellrent, food traditional japanese and wonderful.
Would spend three days instead of two, loved the time to unwind
- Robert (8/5): Great Ryokan Close to Snow Monkey Park - Shibu Onsen is a great Japanese style Ryokan. It is right in the middle of a collection of old style Japanese public baths that are available to guests in one of the Yamanouchi Village ryokan's. It a great cultural experience. There is also a rooftop soaking bath on the property. The breakfast is strictly Japanese. The staff is very attentive and service was good. Their English skills are very limited so takes a bit to communicate. The main reason for coming here is to see the snow monkeys which is about 10 mins by car. The hotel will take you there and drop you outside the monkey park gate. You can then take a bus or call a cab to get back to the hotel. This is a great spot to try a traditional Japanese inn.
- Lisa (8/5): Small but very confirt ryokan - The ryokan stay was nice. We enjoyed wondering Hot spring nearby and enjoyed local Japanese breakfast and dinner.
