Emma (8/5): Amazing view - This YHA is in such a stunning location. A couple of the showers on my floor were unfortunately out of order. Parking is very limited. Scaffolding on my dorm window unfortunately restricted the view of the lake. But in spite of all of this I would go back. The views and location were perfect.

The room was way to hot even with the central heating off and the floor boards creeked a lot . But the view was lovely and the overall presence of the hostel was nice. The hot breakfast was poor as wasnt fresh but was nice to have the continental. The staff were friendly which was nice

The comfiest single bed ever and a gorgeous hot shower too. Excellent location. Staff so helpful. Verified traveler (10/5): Would gladly stay again - I had a great stay; my long weekend at YHA Ambleside was above my expectations. The hostel could use a little basic TLC (little things like chipping paint or torn furniture in the lounges) however the view and location are amazing and outweigh any minor faults. For rooms without en-suite, showers and toilets were always available when needed and there was a sink in the room. Shared kitchen was always clean and staff were friendly and helpful. Cooked breakfast in the morning was great. Guests ranged from families with young children to groups of friends, solo travellers and older adults. Everyone was respectful. Really nice, relaxed atmosphere.

We arrived late so had to pay for parking off site because the car park was a bit on the wee side - thats probably my fault but would try to arrive early to make sure you get the free onsite parking.

Jesin (6/5): - As YHAs go this one was no different. Exceptional views and really friendly staff. However there was a major drawback. The lighting in the rooms are exceptionally dim and the rooms are so dark! The staff are aware of this as they warned us. At night the rooms seem really depressing and it actually can make you feel really gloomy. There are no other sources of light or lamps. But in the day time the views are absolutely exceptional.

Andrew (8/5): Great location to explore - You can't fault the location of this YHA, it is right beside Windermere lake and my room looked out over it. It is a great starting point for exploring some of the lakes and fells. The room itself is pretty basic, bed and cupboard in a room, but that is the proposition so it was fine. I did find the bed a bit hard. My room was private and had its own toilet and shower, it was all clean and functional. The shared versions looked fine too. Otherwise, the place had a bar/restaurant for food and kitchens available for self catering too. I used buses to get around as I had no car (stop very nearby). There are buses to most of the nearby popular places, but most of the services are only hourly, so not the easiest to move around fast. Half hourly to Windermere. Overall, with an understanding of what to expect, I think the place represents good value and the location is great.

Verified traveler (10/5): - It's been three years since I last stayed here and it was good to see they have sorted out the heat in the hostel. It's always been so over heated! Although their was still a radiator on...it's the beginning of September, a bit early for that surely! They have opened up another part for residents and there was only a small tv room and (very hot) small eating area, now residents get a further eating area/lounge with glimpses of the lake. A lovely place to stay, a fabulous bar/restaurant that is just the place to have a much needed refreshment at the end of a long day walking. There is also a breakfast area where you can purchase a full English (yummy!) breakfast if you don't want to cater for yourself. Saw the staff out by the lake side seating picking up rubbish, while I am sure they don't appreciate doing it, the guests certainly do! Highly recommended!!!

Peter (10/5): Brilliant staff - Well organised, endlessly patient check-in, bar looks like a proper expensive B&B, staff most of them young but know what they are doing, I felt precious, safe due to doors are shut floors separated from downstairs. Plenty toilet, shower. Room, bedding was clean, perfect location, a great hub to any direction, walks are in walking distance. THEY'VE GOT A PICNIC AREA STRAIGHT NEXT TO THE LAKE WINDEMERE!

frances (10/5): Excellent views - Right on the edge of Lake Windermere! Beautiful views of the lake, the restaurant has big windows looking out and there are picnic benches and a pier. We got a room with a window looking the same way. The self catering kitchen doesn’t have views of the lake and is not as pretty as the restaurant but it is well stocked and really functional for a lot of people. Lots of dining tables and cooking stations. It is a bit of a walk from Ambleside proper but you can walk via the park and Roman fort.
Stuart (10/5): Fantastic location . Excellent facilities - I stayed at the hostel for 4 nights with a group of 8 men. We had pre booked at 4 restaurants so did not try the the evening meals offered by the hostel but what we saw of them looked really good and we regreted not spending more time relaxing there and just enjoying the views. The hostel is very clean and well maintained. I did not see a dripping tap or even an empty soap dispenser.

Ruth (10/5): Excellent location right on the lake - Having never stayed in a YHA before, we didn't know what to expect. Were we pleasantly surprised? Yes - ok, it's a hostel and not a hotel, but the facilities and the location are really excellent. Self-catering facilities are great. Breakfast can be bought if you'd like that made for you. And the on-site bar and restaurant are a real bonus.

Parking is limited with few options if there are no available spaces. We visit every years however on this occasion, the staff were less friendly and welcoming than usual.
