Guest Reviews
- C C (10/5): Good for a night's digs - Was as expected. Basic accommodation at a reasonable price.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - It's a student accommodation during term time, so do not expect hotel service. It's still great for the price.
- Leah (8/5): Best value for the Fringe - Third year staying here for the fringe - excellent location, basic but clean facilities, great staff. Being able to leave luggage (at no extra charge) is great too.
- Julian (8/5): OK stay during the Fringe Festival - This hostel is ideally located for attending the Fringe festival, but it is far from glamourous. Each room is quite small, basic and the floorboard creak loudly. The shared bathroom (between five) on each corridor is outdated and super basic. You will need to bring or hire towels and toiletries as they are not provided here. Good think is that there is a shared kitchen with fridge, so if you want to cook and eat on a budget or just have a cup of tea you can with ease, but walking down the corridor expect more creaking. In my room too, the window was open, which made it very cold and noisy during my stay as people talking in the courtyard and arriving early (late am) to check in were often inconsiderate of guests trying to sleep off an early AM return to sleep. On the up side it is fairly cheap most nights, but I would not pay more than £40 a night to stay here. Even at that point is overcharging aka a theft from your pockets.
- SusieQ (8/5): Right in the centre of Edinburgh - Student accommodation which is basic and can be noisy but is right at the centre of the action for the Festival. Single rooms only.
- Ella (2/5): Great location, everything else not so much - I booked this hotel during the Edinburgh Fringe festival at very short notice (only booked my holiday 2 weeks before going) so it won on the price and the location front. Took about 2 minutes to walk from my room to the Royal Mile (via Hunter Square) which was fantastic, and a taxi ride back from literally any of the shows I went to see would cost less than 5 pounds (so cheap in comparison to taxis back home where a similar journey would cost you 3 times as much!)
Onto the negatives... This facility operates as student accommodation for most of the year, so keep in mind that you are booking a private room in an apartment with shared bathroom/kitchen facilities. I was aware of this going in, but nothing could have prepared me for the stench in the living room, the crusted on "who knows what this is" on the oven/stove top, and the fact that every time I went to use the bathroom, it looked as though one of my "flatmates" had partaken in a pee party all over the bathroom floor. Pee everywhere, you almost could have opened a public swimming pool there was so much of it. The front desk staff would not send someone up to get it cleaned. The bed itself was like lying on a slab of concrete, with a very sad foam mattress.
- Erica (6/5): Great location, bathroom wasn't too clean - Stayed there for the bank holiday weekend, room was big and spacious (it had a funny smell though). The shared bathroom was cleaned only the first day of my stay, for the rest of the 2 days, no one cleaned it. Compared to the other hostel of this chain, I was a bit disappointed.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Great location in the middle of the Fringe events - Excellent location that was in the middle of old town right on the door step of all the different free fringe events. Staff were really friendly and I felt safe while traveling alone.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Good location but noisy - The hostel located in a good location, but very noisy as next to the pub
Staff are very nice and helpful
Facilities are basic but as it's a hostel, I don't expect too much
- Verified traveler (6/5): Hostel within walking distance to the Royal Mile. - Room was clean & staff nice. Location very central.
If you have a problem with stairs or staying above a pub this place is not for you.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Near from city center, which is good, quite loud neighborhood in the middle of the night though.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Okay place to spend a couple of nights however it can get loud from outside noise and only one flat pillow is provided which doesn't make the best nights sleep.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Old hostel in need of an update - The hostel is old and is really in need of an update, especially the bathroom, but it is in a really great location just minutes walk from the Royal Mile. It is also very quiet and safe. My stay was quite pleasant.
- Verified traveler (6/5): noisy in the night but great location - I am not a big fan of night life and I stay in this hostel when festivals were in heat. Many performers and visitors are crowded on the roads surrounded this place and it was extremely noisy in the night. The noise would not stop until around 4 am in the morning! So bring your ear buds and prepare to be awakened during your sleep. Otherwise, the room is clean, the restroom is large, and I like the kitchen very much. It is located in the city center and it just needs a few minutes walk to most attractions.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Not that bad - The facilities are older but the rooms are clean. Great value.
- Ku-Wai (6/5): - Overall, this hostel is great and comfort; however, it did not provide the hair-drier because it is new-opened, which makes me disappointed.
- Ellie (2/5): Pee Party in the Loo, everyone's invited! - This hotel had a good location. A great location. Unfortunately, that was where the positives ended. The bed was akin to sleeping on a slab of concrete, the room smelled faintly as though the previous occupant had a compulsive desire to pee in the corner, and the bathroom seemed as though there was a constant pee party going on, and everyone was invited. The staff would only help you bring your bags up to your room if you were young, pretty and blonde - I am lacking in 2 of those features, and had to haul my bags up the spiral staircase of my building, stopping on each floor to try and find the room I was in.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Comfortable Compared the Cost - The location was good, the room was clean and common bath was big, so it was nice hotel.
- Keith (10/5): Edinburgh Hostle - An excellent start point for a city walk-about, all amenities one needs with friendly efficient staff
- Verified traveler (4/5): Great location, okay for the price - Very affordable in a very central location. This place is university housing that is converted to a hostel for the summer. I stayed on a Thursday night, and it was very loud outside from people in nearby bars. But if you just need a room to stay for the night, this is a decent option (but you get what you pay for).
