Guest Reviews
- shelby10_13 (6/5): Very strange but not that bad - Arriving it looked so neglected and weird. Something out of a horror movie but inside although a bit eerie it was clean and tidy. Decor different but being a brothel it was fitting. There is so much potential in this hotel the ground would be perfect for a summer chill out but is do full of weeds
The pool is green and neglected and the fountain has been left to fill with grass and leaves
Nit a place i would go back to. Breakfast was minimal compared to many others and not value for money. It could be so much better
- ChristopherColin89 (2/5): Awful, don't book! - As soon as we drove up-to the hotel we instantly thought that we should turn the car around. The grounds were not well looked after and overgrown. The pool in disuse and clearly hadn't been well maintained. After checking in, we went to the room. Very dated and smelt very musky. The hotel use to be a brothel and they clearly have took this theme way overboard. The ambience of the place was very foreboding, we left the key at the front door and left without hesitation. The property has a lot of potential, but reminded us of a hotel you would find out of an Alfred Hitchcock film.
- rcgentry (2/5): Our ESCAPE from Hotel Villino della Flanella (and their bed bugs & cockroaches) - We were supposed to stay two nights but our experience was so terrible we fled to Milan after the first night.
Our stay at Villino Della Flanella was shocking from the start. Upon arrival, the grounds were in shambles with weeds and tall grass everywhere, a huge difference form photos we had seen online. When entering the building we were greeted by a dark, dingy interior and overcome by a musky smell that seemed to permeate every room and became stronger upstairs in our room. We stayed in room #1 which was a "suite".
The room was large, dingy, extremely dated and very odd. The room was also extremely hot, but we turned on the air conditioning expecting it to cool off over time. I understand the Hotel used to be a brothel and they have decided to maintain the theme which is understandable, but I feel is mostly an excuse to keep all the old furniture and decorations around no matter the disgusting condition they are in. Some of the art on the wall is very adult and is a good representation of what would happen in a brothel, but some other art is quite disturbing and can only be described as scenes from cultish male orgies.
After checking and leaving our luggage in the room, we left to enjoy Modena which was a very delightful town. When we returned, we found that the air conditioning had not cooled the room at all. We stayed up pretty late that night playing card games and enjoying some wine we bought in town. We were uncomfortable with the temperature but were only truly disgusted when a cockroach ran across the couch and up my leg while we played cards. If it hadn't been so late in the evening and we could have organized somewhere else to stay, we would have escaped Villino Della Flanella at that very moment.
We quickly tried to use the Wifi provided by the hotel only to realize it was extremely unreliable. I could only browse a webpage a few minutes before the Wifi would completely drop and disappear for 5-10 minutes at a time. This made our escape from the Villino Della Flanella extremely difficult and nearly impossible. Due to the terrible Internet, it took around two hours to book a train to leave town and book another hotel. We finally decided to get some sleep before waking up early to flee this terrible place.
In the morning we quickly repacked and headed to the front desk to return our key and explain our experience. The woman behind the counter basically shrugged her shoulders and said there would be no refund since we had booked online and prepaid. I expected it to be difficult to get a refund, but her absolute indifference to the conditions of the room and the presence of cockroaches was surprising. She behaved like she knew of these problems and did not care. It wasn't until we were on the train leaving Modena that I noticed these red spots on my hands. Upon further inspection I realized I had them across my arms, legs and feet. I realized they must be bed bug bites. My girlfriend also has many bites across her hands, feet and a couple around her face.
It has been one day since our escape from Villino Della Flannella and our bites have swelled, reddened, and begun to itch. They are extremely painful and are without a doubt the worst souvenir I will be taking back to Texas with me. Instead of comfortably returning to my home, I now have to thoroughly wash, clean, exterminate, or destroy different parts of our clothing, luggage, and shoes before taking them back into our home.
TL:DR - Awful hotel with weird smell and an awkward cult-orgy vibe that goes beyond the "brothel" theme. Extremely poor functioning air conditioning and equally terrible Wifi. Must be willing to occupy room with cockroaches and bed bugs. Hotel staff doesn't care about the conditions or experience of guests. My only regret about escaping this place was that I didn't set a match to it during our exit.
WORST HOTEL IN ITALY.
- Runner008 (8/5): Interesting stop but not ideal for kids! - We stayed here one night on our long road-trip north from Puglia to Rotterdam. It was really helpful that the hotel was easy to find from the motorway using GoogleMaps, literally a couple of minutes.
The grounds have the air of faded grandeur that is typical of much of Italy these days. However, the hotel has Italian style, even if it is of an adult nature. Whoever put together the art works in the rooms must have had a great time!
The rooms were a reasonable size. Ours had a double bed (a bit hard and squeaky we discovered) and a sofa besides the end suite plus a nice view of the garden.
No evening meals are on offer but our friendly receptionist explained where we could find some options. There is an Osteria next door but it was being renovated when we were there so dinner required another car ride almost back to the motorway.
Breakfast the next morning was limited (cereal choice was cornflakes or cornflakes and the scrambled eggs hadn't kept well) but catered for a range of tastes.
For those like us who appreciate a leg stretch after a long journey I discovered a great cycle path. Turn left at the end of the hotel drive and walk under the motorway. Immediately left is a track and a sign "Corso Ciclacibile". This looks like it follows the motorway but after 50 metres or so it turns right and then follows field edges for at least 3 miles, which is where I turned round. Great for exercise on 2 or 4 legs!
This hotel is recommended as pleasant and peaceful curiosity for those who don't mind some mild titillation. Leave the kids at home though!
- Multis (8/5): Eccentric, but if you visit Modena Fairs, you couldn't find better place - We didn't know what to believe on the last kilometer or so, as the road got through some gardens and got progressively smaller. But the hotel is actually cute and positively different. It's certainly not everyones cup of tea. Everything is slightly old and worn, but in a good way. Decoration is unique. Mussolini pictures & statues, erotic art from 1920's and mixture of old items. Very refreshing. We'll go here again.
- ChchTrev (4/5): Eclectic mix with good service - We booked this hotel fairly last minute. The access is way off the main road up a single lane road/path to an overgrown driveway that leads up to the house.
The fountain has obviously not been working for some time and probably was amazing in its hay day.
The proprietor was welcoming and spoke fairly good English.
The thing that amazed us was the amount of naked woman pictures on the walls including the sex ones in the bedroom. It must be a European thing because we have not seen anything like this and we have travelled a lot.
The main problem with the room was the bed as I had to check that it actually had a mattress on it as it was so hard. Not good.
Breakfast was good. House and room need maintenance. Two lamps not working it the room. TV was not plugged in and had to trace the power cable.
Won't be back.
