Guest Reviews
- Jason (10/5): - It is in a good area. Many restaurants are close by. Also close to the zoo. The staff is very accommodating and very easy to talk to.
- RossBlake (10/5): Perfect base for exploring Trinidad - Pam is a delight! - I chose the Forty Winks Inn based on vicinity to the Queen’s Park Savannah, mainly for the night market, the vicinity to the old part of Port of Spain for the old buildings, the local restaurants and also based on the description and reviews.
Once I had booked, Pam (the owner) contacted me to check what time my flight was arriving. I was arriving in Trinidad at 0600 and I understood that check in was much later, so I requested to leave our bags at the Inn. Pam offered breakfast and an early check in for a small fee, and I graciously accepted. I’m glad I did.
The Inn is a simple two level building with rooms on both floors. We stayed on the ground floor at the back of the building. There is a courtyard along the side of the building where breakfast is served. On the second floor, there is a rooftop garden that is often visited by local birds, including green parrots.
The room was simple and comfortable, exactly what I needed as a base for day trips. I had to do coursework during the evenings, so I often sat in the foyer where the wifi was strongest.
Pam is a wealth of local knowledge, and asked straight away what my plans were for Trinidad. When I outlined that my list of places of interest and that I’d need a driver, Pam organised a driver who turned out to be better than I could have ever arranged myself – “Sweet” Nick from “Sensational Tours and Transport”. Pam had known Nick for years. I can’t recommend Nick enough, if you’re looking for a guide!
We walked to downtown Port of Spain from the Inn, as well as Woodbrook and St James. We were warned to not venture east of Henry St, but honestly we never felt unsafe.
Sadly, the only issue I had during my stay was the vicinity to local food. The listings on google maps mostly don’t exist anymore or at least don’t keep the hours on google. It’s an issue in Trinidad and Tobago, and a lot of it is due to a downturn in tourism. There aren’t a lot of local food options available at night nearby, besides the night market (which I would recommend), and you might need to walk a bit further to St James etc. We did get takeaway fish from “Sweet Mouth” at the back of Hereford’s Bar on Maraval Rd a couple of blocks north. We ate it in the rooftop garden at the Inn and it was a great easy option. There is also a Rituals Coffee House a couple of minutes walk away. There is a Massey Stores supermarket a few minutes walk to the south.
If I was visiting Port of Spain again, I wouldn’t hesitate to stay at Forty Winks Inn again. I enjoyed chatting with Pam over breakfast in the mornings, and discussing our experiences in Trinidad and travelling. And if you’re lucky, you’ll get to meet her beautiful dog Bella.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Pros and Cons - Pros:
Pam (host) is great. Lots of knowledge and goes out of her way to be helpful.
Central location.
Shower worked well.
Cons:
Found dead bedbug on bed.
WiFi cut out constantly, only available from a corner of the room, died often.
Toilet broken, leaked on floor.
Conclusion: accepting the bedbug, would have been acceptable at a lower price point. As is, I wouldn’t stay again.
- rogerc286 (10/5): Fantastic ! - I recently sent a friend for a vacation to Forty Winks Inn at Port of Spain T&T. This was her first trip outside her home country, first time in an airport and first time on an airplane. She was travelling solo and a little nervous. I spoke to Pam at Forty Winks and explained all this to her. Pam assured me she would take good care of my friend from arrival to departure. Pam arranged for a Spanish speaking driver to pick my friend up at the airport and deliver her to the Inn. She and her staff bent over backwards to accommodate my friend and even took her out to show her the local tourist sights. My friend told me she felt so welcome and at home from the moment she arrived. The rooms was beautiful and very clean, food was excellent and above all the customer service was excellent. Thank you Pam and staff for providing my friend with a wonderful experience at Forty Winks Inn. I’m very happy to recommend this to others.
- Molly J (10/5): Forty Winks - Forty Winks is a great place to stay as a tourist due to its central location. It's just a short walk to Queen's Park Savannah, Ariapita Avenue, St. James place. Pam, the owner, is very helpful and had a wide suggestion of tips for us. The patio is a great place to relax and read a book. The neighborhood also felt safe to walk around in at night!
- 403jeremiahj (10/5): Fabulous Forty Winks Inn - I stayed here for a few days. Location was perfect, central to the best sights in Port of Spain,Trinidad that not once I rode a taxi.Pam the owner was warm, friendly, accommodating & sweet.Fresh home made breakfast too daily.Super friendly staff, comfortable bed, clean room and completely affordable!!!.I thought I was dreaming. I can't wait to visit again.I really can not say enough about this place!!!. Excellent customer service!!!. Don't believe what you always read in the media.Trinidad is beautiful, safe & you will definitely have a fun time!!!. FORTY WINKS INN is where you definitely want to stay!!!!.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Decent, comfortable and homely feel. Very hospitable owner.
- 748annam (10/5): Lovely guesthouse - Forty Winks is a lovely locally owned guesthouse with friendly owner and staff. WiFi is good, there’s a different home cooked breakfast each morning, and a small terrace upstairs which is nice in the evening. Very safe area to walk around, and only 10 mins to Ariapita Ave in the evenings, 3 mins to Queen’s Park Savannah to join the morning joggers. Stay there!
- guidadiroma (10/5): Lovely place! - Forty winks was lovely as was Pam and her staff. We loved the rooms, the breakfast and...everything! The building is wonderfully looked after, everything is very clean and the colours of every part of it are joyful and vibrant. There is a lovely terrace with lots of plants and a table with chairs for one to go and enjoy the Caribbean sky.
The rooms are lovely and breakfast is cooked fresh every morning. Pam and her staff are always there to help with any query with a smile on their face, nothing is too much for them.
Everything ticked all the boxes for us.
- ummimraan (10/5): Best little place to stay - So its not the Hilton, but why go to Trinidad to be in the Hilton or to give your money back to billionaires. This 5 room hotel was perfect. The hostess Pam was very very helpful. She put together an itinerary for us for the days we were there. She said she could arrange transportation if we needed it. We were close to many places downtown. Made to order breakfast and coffee in the morning. Extremely clean (and I am a clean snob). Do yourself a favor and stay here. If I ever go back she will get our business again for sure. Nice rooftop patio and small eating porch.
- Trip19284917899 (10/5): The BEST decision ever!!! - Staying at Forty Winks was the best decision we made for our vacation. The owner and operator is a wealth of information for tourist. The room was clean the breakfast was delicious. Money well spent!!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Very friendly and hospitable staff. Room was clean and ready when I arrived.
- soloballard (10/5): Great Hospitality & Local Connections - As a woman traveling alone, I was a bit concerned about my visit to Trinidad. Forty Winks put all of those concerns to bed! In addition to being a lovely place to stay, the staff has all the right connections in town to make sure you get to experience Trinidad in the way you want. They recommended a local food tour for me and connected me with a driver for all the other things I wanted to do -- I did them all and more!
- TravelingSoccerLoon (10/5): Nice Place with Character and Good Location in Port of Spain - When traveling, the last thing I want to do is stay at a familiar chain hotel. My stay at Forty Winks was very enjoyable despite watching my US soccer team lose and miss out on the World Cup. More of a guesthouse than a hotel. Included a tasty breakfast in the morning. Nice location in the middle of town but on a quiet street and I felt safe walking around the area. Located not too far from the Savannah, the large city park. Also not too bad of a walk to Ariapita Street where you can find many bars and restaurants although it would be wise to ride a taxi or Uber back at night.
- PreetyChauhan20 (10/5): Cozy and warm - Its really nice and cozy to stay here, the staff is awesome . My favourite spots are terrace and dining. I recommend this place if you are looking for some warm and average price range hotel. Best part you can cook for yourself..
- Verified traveler (8/5): Perfect for one night stay - Stayed for only one night in transit. Clean, friendly staff, spartan. Perfect location for walking around on foot.
- spuddybike (10/5): Lovely spot, friendly, great service - Well located hotel, very individual decor that shouts I’m in Trinidad! Everyone was so nice a helpful, providing good recommendations for places to eat, drink, places to see etc. Very helpful in arranging onward travel etc
Breakfast was great, spent evening sat on terrace watching fireworks on Independence Day.
- Blessing (10/5): Amazing - Was amazing, friendly staff and good neighbourhood
- ghordvei (10/5): The friendliest people - Thank you for eight wonderful days on Forty Winks Inn. Like for the rest of Trinidad , the nicest, friendliest people, the greatest food, the best service and help with time consuming hassle as renting 7 seater cars. Pam and her staff fixes everything and guides you as for what to do. Wonderful mornings on the roof terrasse with a coffee, counting parrots. To us Trinidad was as exotic as it sounds and Forty Winks Inn one of the nicest places we ever stayed. brgds Fam Hordvei,Norway
- jvaniar (10/5): Amazing service great location. - I visited forty winks after hearing about it by various friends and family members. It definitely lived up to its amazing reputation. The breakfast was delicious ( thanks Devon) it was in a great location and I felt right at home during my entire visit. The prices are definitely reasonable and I will recommend this place to anyone wishing to come to Trinidad for the first time
- 804adeliah (10/5): Pam is the reason why you stay here - Pam is the owner of Forty Winks and she works very hard to ensure that not only your stay is comfortable, but also that you can get around and explore. Trinidad and Tobago are not very well organized for tourism at this time. You can't just catch a cab to get where you need to g. We did not rent a car because we did not want to deal with traffic and public transit really isn't really an option. Therefore, transportation was a huge issue. Pam was always willing to help arrange for a driver or guide, even last minute! It was really assuring to know that the services she connected us with were reliable and trusted.
The room was very comfortable and nicely appointed. Make sure to bring your own shampoo if you're not accustomed to that. We also really enjoyed the free home cooked breakfast! The garden patio is also a plus. You can walk to Ariapita Avenue within a few minutes to check out street vendors and bars.
We stayed three nights and would do it again with Pam's hospitality. She really cares about making sure her guests have a great experience in Trinidad and her dedication to running her small business is exceptional.
- llampec (6/5): Small room, with excellent breakfast. - FORTY WINKS INN. PortOfSpain. Placed in Newton, at NO. Taxi from/ to Piarco airport 35 $. 2 Km,= 35 min. boring walk to the Independence Square. Few shops around the Inn. Two nights 218 $. A welcome drink was expected.... Room too small, without frigidaire. No view outside (only a very high narrow window). Good TV, wifi, breakfast (nice fried eggs). Cleanness bed, towels. Additional comment: I thought that the 2 days were adjusted time to visit the city. Not real. One day is enough. Unfortunately I did'nt know the trip to visit the Nanan's Bird, nearly the capital. A pity. Try it.
- Anita (10/5): Warm welcome! - After we booked up for our stay, I saw a Sunday Times article on Trinidad which said not to stay in any of the big, bland overpriced chain hotels but to choose a guest house like Forty Winks! I was so pleased to have our decision reinforced, and we were not disappointed. We got a really warm welcome and were looked after from the moment we walked in the door, given useful advice and excellent taxi support for our needs (local and for the trip to see the scarlet ibis coming in to roost - amazing experience!).
There is a pretty garden terrace, and the breakfast area is so attractive too, they have made the most of space and artwork brings plantlife indoors.
The location is quite central, mostly residential, but with some good places to eat, we were happy to walk into town.
The shower is one of the best we have come across to date in our three plus weeks around the Caribbean (time that includes posh hotels!). A lot of care and attention has gone into this guest house, as you will see from the website!
- LS13 (6/5): Disappointing Room for the price - The small brightly coloured building is situated in Port of Spain's Newtown district. We found it ok in our rental car using sat nav and luckily were able to grab a roadside parking space directly opposite when the owner moved her car. Our room was a little underwhelming- a small downstairs corner room with only tiny vent-type windows. Not much space for two to move about in or store bags. My first impression was that it was somewhat cell-like. It was very clean though and there were numerous house rules dotted about such as 'sleep beneath the sheets not the blanket'. I was thinking that the $89 US was quite expensive for the room so was surprised to then be asked to pay an additional $20. In my email I'd asked for a double room, which for some reason the hotel had interpreted as for one person. The price for 2 people was actually $119 and the receptionist seemed to think she was giving us a good deal by discounting that by 10%. I tried to point out that I'd asked for a double so it wasn't really my fault but she was in no mood to negotiate- she was face timing on her phone most of the time we were there.Another strange element of staying at 40 Winks is influenced by the parking policy of Port of Spain (obviously nothing to do with the hotel). This means that cars can be parked on the roadside but on different sides on alternate days. i.e. The car has to be moved to the other side of the road after midnight on day 1 and before 6am on day 2. This required me to move it after midnight after a few drinks (which I did) or get up just after 6am. A very strange procedure which isn't conducive to a good nights sleep. Some good points of the hotel- it has a nice sunny roof garden, a communal kitchen with a fridge you can use, and the breakfast was good. (Though Turkey omelette isn't something I've had before!) it's also in a good location with bars and restaurants in walking distance. I felt $109 for a very small room was poor value though.
- JavaDHu77 (10/5): Cant recommend highly enough! - My wife and I generally aren't fans of big chain hotels, usually opting for places with a bit of character and charm with a unique and "local" feel to them which i can honestly say we found in Pam and the Forty Winks!
On arrival we were met by Pam (the owner) who is an incredibly friendly and personable woman and made such an effort to talk to my wife's family which I know they appreciated (they're French and don't speak a great deal of English). We had already made arrangements for tours and taxi's but Pam was more than willing to share her local knowledge, recommending restaurants (Buzo is worth a visit) and things to see and do locally. She even went over and above one evening by driving my wife and her family to a restaurant due to the torrential rain! Totally unexpected but very much appreciated.
The rooms themselves were beautifully presented, clean and comfortable with AC and a real "homey" feel to them. Each morning we were greeted pleasantly by a member of staff and had a lovely cooked breakfast preceded by fresh fruit and a variety of juices. The hotel has a lovely breakfast room which is partially open to the elements and a lovely spacious terrace.
As my title states, i honestly cannot recommend this hotel highly enough; travelling with a large group (including young children) can often be a stressful affair but Pam and her team made it that little bit easier and I would like to thank her and all of them for everything that they did for us!
- gowsri (10/5): Fantastic Place - My husband and I stayed here for a week during the 2018 carnival. This cozy hotel is charming, colorful and centrally located, yet within walking distance to all the carnival activities, Savannah, many restaurants and attractions. We always felt safe walking even late at night in this neighborhood.
Owner Pam and her staff are wonderful and want to make sure their guests have a great stay. Pam greeted us every morning with a delicious home cooked breakfast that was different everyday. She even went out of her way to provide special vegetarian meals for me. We highly recommend this wonderful hotel! Thanks Pam for making our trip special!
- janw426 (10/5): Oasis in Port of Spain - Simple but personal rooms at this perfect hotel for a stay in Port of Spain.
Pam and Liz gave us all sorts of help to arrange visits at Yerettes and Pitch Lake (guided by Mr Nick, who we also recommend)
We highly recommend this hotel, which has perfect location for exploring Port of Spain by foot and within walking distance to several very nice restaurants (for example Buzo and Town).
Just a comment on tour costs. It puzzled us that the tours ( like roundtrip to Pitch Lake) are very expensive (which mainly is transportation cost), when transportation using ordinary taxis and buses generally is very cheap.
- englandcarole (10/5): A Pleasurable Stay. - We stayed for five nights and it felt very homely. Especially when we first arrived the welcome from the lovely Cuban staff was very much appreciated. Every day we were greeted in a warm and friendly manner at breakfast time, similarly when we arrived back in the evening. With the exception of when the Cuban family were not there, the owner opened the door to us with an austere expression and another local person (non Cuban) was equally offhand.
The friendliness of the Cuban staff will certainly be what earns Forty Winks its good reputation.
Breakfast was nicely cooked and the rooms were always kept clean and tidy.
Our Taxi Driver Sagar Singh deserves a mention too. He is extremely reliable and reasonably priced both picking us up from the airport and his son coming to pick us up to take us back to the Airport. Sagar's telephone number is 868 779 6985
- Rachel (10/5): Wonderful Guest House - We absolutely loved out stay at Forty Winks. It's in a great area, the rooms are clean, the beds comfortable, and Pam -the manager- is one of the most accommodating and helpful people I've met. She gave us great advice on where to eat, and what to do. And when it looked like we were going to miss our ferry to Tobago she personally drove us to the station. Would 100% recommend Forty Winks to anyone visiting Port of Spain.
- JSK (10/5): Nice and Comfy Hotel - The hotel was nice and comfortable. The staff very friendly and warm. It is in a nice neighborhood and a very nice park is not far from the Hotel. We were there for work.
We felt like home.
Thank you Forty winks staff.
- Khaki (8/5): Hotel Stay that will amaze - Very good experience staying at the hotel...I honestly didn't have one complain. Its a small hotel but very well located with accessibility to the thriving culture was very easy.
- Ryan (8/5): Walking distance to everything - Pat the owner greeted me and we had a wonderful conversation, she ensured that my room was perfect before allowing me to enter. The breakfast the next day was prepared as you enter the dining area...my overall stay was pleasant and comfortable. I would recommend anyone to this place.
- Shereen (8/5): Great location for Carnival liming! - Nestled in a quiet street in Woodbrook, the rooms might be small but the location is great for anything you might be doing around Carnival in Port-of-Spain. Each room is air-conditioned, has a comfy bed, TV with cable, and your private bathroom to shower off all the Carnival sweat in gloriously hot water. Staff are very helpful and friendly, and the morning breakfasts were very nice - I had fruit, scrambled eggs and ham, and coffee with toast and jam. I would definitely stay here again and would recommend it - it is perfect for the solo traveller or couples. There is also a lovely quiet patio upstairs with lots of tropical plants where you can relax outside of your room.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - Very noisy bad location in front of a hospital no parking no space...
- Verified traveler (10/5): Nice, small and private hotel - The hotel is clean and tidy. They provide everything you need, from towels to soap. The breakfast is really good and it is well located so you can walk around and get to know the city.
- Darius (10/5): Amazing! - Staff was amazing! Very hospitable, helped us navigate the city, made arrangements to tour the city, and took care of our every need. The hotel was very comfortable, relaxing, and the breakfast was great.
- John (10/5): Irie! - Stayed at the hotel my first and last night in Trinidad. Hotel staff very nice and accommodating. It's a boutique type hotel with a lot of personality. Good value for the price. Restaurants and night life on the Avenue nearby.
- johnathan (10/5): The best mini hotel in the area by far - With only a limited time to spend there and on top of this my tardiness they provided for me exquisitly. Breakfast included, clean, air-condition and friendly staff really made me feel like home. It was that special blend of being a foreigner but also being part of the locals. In all I was a wonderful stay. Practically in town and all necessities at walking distance or a few minutes drive. The security and assistance was great and I couldn't help but fall for the customer service. For my first visit to trinidad it was really a home away from home thank you fourty winks.
- Marjut (8/5): Bright small guesthouse in good location - We stayed a week in this friendly small place, efficiently run by a local person, who was knowledgeable and helpful. It was immaculately clean , safe and in a good location. We found the first room we stayed in small, but were moved to a larger room when we requested this. Quiet area. Happy to recommend.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Decent Hotel in the City's Capital - We got there early as our flight was a red-eye and we had to wait until 11AM to check in, which was fine. The hotel was small and quaint in an OK part of town. The city is not that pretty so considering this the location was acceptable. They did not have keys for us to the room as the prior guest forgot to return them so they had to open and close the door for us. This actually was not an issue since there was always someone there. The room was small and clean. The AC worked well and the HBO and cable TV was nice. The bed was comfortable. We did notice and kill 2 mosquitoes in the room. We wore bug repellent the entire time while in the country so we didn't get bitten once. Breakfast was nice and tasty. The staff provided us with some info on the island but not much. All-in-all it was a fine stay for the price.
