Guest Reviews
- Tim (6/5): - Basic amenities and room, but perfectly fine for a couple of nights in Tortuguero
- Shu-Yi (10/5): - Really authentic place. Beautiful grounds, we saw lots of birds here, and big iguanas. The swimming pool is beautiful and relaxing. Comfy rooms. Make sure to book your tours from here. We booked our turtle tour and canoe tour from here. Our turtle guide is miss Nori from the hotel. She is beyond amazing! She is local, so knowledgeable and does patrols along the beach to protect the turtles. Really admirable!
- Julie (10/5): - Absolutely wonderful location
- Sebastian (10/5): - Passt schon.
- jonathan robert (10/5): - The best staff you can ask for. True hospitality!!! The breakfast was quaint but delicious. The property is older and simple but clean and safe.
- Caroline (10/5): Totally Wonderful - It is a wonderful spot.
The photos don't do it justice, nestled between the river and the sea, the public boat dropped us off at the property.
Staff were excellent, teens loved the pool and how easy it was to wonder into town.
- Deborah (10/5): Highly Recommend - We had a wonderful stay at Miss Junies. It was well located near to town but had the secluded nature at the end of the village. The sea on one side and the river on the other. The character of the building was amazing with beautiful gardens all around, we saw many different birds and animals. They also had a great pool to swim in.The food we had for breakfast and dinner was delicious. We really enjoyed the two tours we did there the turtle nesting and canoe trip of the canals. They were very informative and genuinely seemed interested and concerned with nature and conservation.
- Bharat (10/5): - Nice hotel for better views
- Stéphane (10/5): Super séjour - Excellent séjour. Chambre propre, personnel très agréable.
Situation parfaite entre mer et fleuve.
- Aguirre (8/5): - El personal fantastico.
- Manon (10/5): - The aera was in unique place beetwen the Tortuguero’s canal and the ocean
- Trudi (10/5): - Great location, handy for the national park, town and beach. Friendly helpful staff. Fantastic pool
- Rafael (10/5): - Amazing host the owners
- Sara (10/5): - Miss Junies was excellent, and has such an interesting history as an integral part of Tortuguero. The staff were amazing, Noly took us on a night time turtle tour where we got to see two turtles at the same time! Her nephew was a great river guide by both motorboat and kayak, and the chef made us incredible food every day. Thank you so much Miss Junies!
- Frédéric (8/5): - Bon rapport qualité prix
Logement bien situé
Belle piscine et bon petit déjeuner
On a dîné à l'extérieur
- Carl (2/5): Avoid at all costs - Rubbish stay here, staff tried telling us we have one room booked instead of too. The staff tried telling me coffee and juice in breakfast was an extra charge after we had it. A joke of a service. You can’t pay in card, they only accept cash even though there is a card payment sticker in the reception. Don’t stay here unless you want a stressful and awful experience
- Simon (10/5): - The lodge is situated perfectly, at the beginning of the center yet completely isolated in a big and wonderful garden. Nolly and her team were incredibly welcoming and kind. I would highly recommend staying here, the lodge has a very long history and this adds big value. They arranged all our tours and transport - always finding a solution for our needs, making our stay just magical! For example, where other groups had to visit the turtles in large numbers we did it together with the owner - just the three of us! Many examples like this. As a bonus they also serve the best pico de gallo in all of Costa Rica for breakfast. So to summarise: your stay supports a family owned business with a long history for Tortuguero. You will not be disappointed.
- Mark (4/5): - Dogs everywhere and their mess which was a shame as the location is great.
The host isn’t very personable but others are.
Facilities in the room are very poor and there is no way this is a 3 star establishment.
When it came time to pay the figure was higher than on hotels.com and she would only take cash as the card machine was broken and the bank won’t fix it.
So tried to over charge me and made up a story about the card machine.
Cannot recommend at all.
- Caroline (10/5): - Miss Junie lodge is a great place to stay in Tortuguero, close to the village but quiet
The pool is great and Cloied our guide was amazing
- Jean Louis (10/5): - Todo bien.
- Sallie (10/5): - Beautiful gardens great folks restaurant convenient location clean
- Amelie (10/5): - We were really well greeted by the owners, breakfast was included and the pancakes were delicious.
Cloyd gave us a fantastic turtles watching tour.
Thank you!
- Jane (4/5): - The woman who checked us in was abrasive and rude. She made us wait for half an hour even though there was no one else there. I explained that we had booked online and paid in advance, and showed her the confirmation, but she seemed distrustful. I had to explain and show her several times. She became annoyed and argumentative because we booked a turtle tour with another company, not through the hotel. When we checked out on day 3, she did not remember our conversation about having prepaid online, and stalled, asking me about payment again. I finally had to just walk away so we wouldn’t miss the ferry. This was the only unpleasant staff experience of our entire vacation in Costa Rica.
- Ayala (10/5): - Miss Junies belong the the founders of Tortuguero, we were fascinated by the history. Very simple rooms, but nice outdoors and a nice pool
- Ingrid (10/5): - Muy limpio y agradable, buen desayuno
- Darcee (10/5): - We had a wonderful time at Miss Junie’s. The staff are so unbelievably kind, friendly and helpful. The hotel and tours are run by a local family and they are lovely people who really care about their guests. The room and the view from our room was lovely. Breakfast was good and we had dinner in the restaurant one night also and that too was excellent. We did 3 tours with Cloied at the hotel and he was so passionate and knowledgeable about the area. The hotel is at the end of town, so quiet, and surrounded by beautiful gardens, the lagoon and the beach. We were so lucky to have found Miss Junie’s and blesses to have the opportunity to meet the family. We would not hesitate to recommend a stay here.
- Amanda (10/5): - This was an amazing experience. Directly on the gorgeous turtle nesting beach right in the national park this beautiful lodge is owned by a storied local family, one of the first to settle the area. Their dad was a jaguar hunter but when they learned how important the area was environmentally their mom (Miss Junie) started her lodge and they all became instrumental in the creation of the national park.
Noly, who as a young lady organized locals to patrol the beach, protecting nesting turtles from poachers, took me on the turtle tour, which was absolutely life changing. Her brother gives canal tours through the rainforest and we saw sloths, a whole group of monkeys (both carrying babies!) lizards and tons of beautiful birds.
The lodge is made of beautiful mahogany, has lovely tile pool and air conditioning in some of the rooms. It is situated right next to the little town and has an amazing Costa Rican/Caribbean restaurant (and free breakfast.) Miss Junies seafood special was one of the best things I’ve ever eaten.
This lodge is peaceful, incredibly beautiful close to everything and allows you to get to know a local family as well as the history and wildlife in the region. I’m not sure why one would stay anywhere else.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The establishment was beautiful, perfectly located and the staff was extremely friendly and helpful. They even have their own guides to different tours in the national park and to see the sea turtles. Both tours we took were absolutely wonderful. Our stay was amazing.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Excellent location. I could see the ocean, the pool, and the canals from my room.
Good restaurant. The included breakfast was especially good.
Amenities were good. They let me borrow a canoe for free.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Hübsche Lodge in netter Lage. Zimmer im oberen Stockwerk gut
- Klaus (8/5): Tolle Umgebung, nettes Hotel - Nur mit Boot erreichbar, im Ort zentrale Lage.
Zimmer klein, aber sauber und absolut ok.
Kleines Restaurant, besser als so manches großes.
Stuff ist bemüht und freundlich.
Umgebung großartig und eine Reise wert.
- Robin (10/5): - The staff was so personable and attended to our every need. We loved spending time with Miss Junie in her living room.. such a beautiful soul. Loved getting to know her.. her grandson, Gerald gave us a private boat tour of the jungle!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Muy amables.
- David (10/5): best spot in Tortuguero - The perfect spot to stay in Tortuguero (we think). 2 minute walk into the centre of town, beach view!, and personalized access to tours and natural history info. A memorable Christmas
- WeNor (10/5): - This is a place with a long history in the region. What it lacks in some amenities it makes up for in charm, friendly staff and beautiful setting. It is located between the river and the ocean. It has a pool that is clean and well maintained. The only drawback is that it was sometimes hard to find staff when I had a question.
- Marie-Louise (10/5): - Smukt sted - stor ro
- Robyn (10/5): The Best - Our stay at Miss Julie's was a little hot but honestly other than that, it was fantastic!! Everyone at Miss Julie's, including Miss Julie herself, were outstanding. They took such great care of us and helped us with all the changes in our schedule and pick up and everything. The tours they offered were top notch. We headed out on a kayak tour with Monkey Miguel and went to places you couldn't go on a larger, louder boat. We walked through town to the park and saw all 3 species of monkeys on the Caribbean Coast. And everyone on this little spit of land were wonderfully delightful. Highly recommended!!
- Matthew (8/5): - Good location at one end of Tortuguero village, rooms are in cool style. Swimming pool in garden. Friendly staff (gardener chopped us up fresh coconut) - Cloyd is an excelled and enthusiastic guide for turtle nesting tours and for canoe tours of the waterways
Some points to improve:
- almost none of the electrics (lights etc.) were working in first room we were checked into - staff moved us very quickly but even then we only had access to one working plug socket in second room
- swimming pool wasn’t ready on check-in, disappointing given how hot /humid it is. Also there is no shade / parasols around the pool, this would improve the facilities here.
- considering that the hotel is in the jungle, I was surprised that rooms did not have mosquito nets or coils
- Verified traveler (10/5): - I loved it
Everything was perfect
I only want to suggest that they should build a small dock
- John (10/5): Miss Junies is the best - This lovely spot is the soul of Tortuguero, built by a wonderful family, tortuguero pioneers,
The were very instrumental in saving the area from logging and destruction and worked with scientists to make this area truly a Home for Turtles. The family is gracious and loving, and Cloid was an INCREDIBLE guide, spotting and identifying wildlife and birds on a fantastic canoe tour. His knowledge was phenomenal. The food in the restaurant was the best we’ve had in our two weeks in Costa Rica. The grounds are beautiful, surrounded by gardens with the ocean on one side of the property and the river on the other. We absolutely loved our 3 days at Miss Junies.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - We enjoyed the Lodge's location, food, pool, and the ocean breeze😀
- Verified traveler (8/5): - The view is beautiful, and the staff is awesome! They trated us excellent and breakfast was delicious.
- EJJ van (10/5): Look nowhere else! - We stayed there 4 nights and I can only recommend Miss Junies for a lodge in the heart of the village (yet quiet), and her son for guided tours. The boat tour and the night tour with him where probably the highlight of our 2 weeks trip to Costa Rica. Incredibly knowledgeable, generous and genuine.
- Steven (10/5): - Very friendly staff and beautiful property.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - I think this hotel is relying on it's previously good reputation and has now gone downhill.
The guide, Choy, is excellent and enthusiastic the rest of the staff are disinterested.
Rooms.are fine but outside.(on the sea side) there is an ugly partly completed pool with stagnant water and a pile of builders' rubble.
Breakfast is very poor ... No choice and strict portion control (you are not even allowed to poor your own milk into your coffee!). Not enjoyable at all.
- Lori (6/5): Disappointed - We were a little disappointed in Miss Junie’s. The hotel was run down. Our toilet clogged a few times during a 2 night stay. On the second day I had to ask to have my room cleaned as they did not tend to this. The staff was neither helpful or friendly.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Miss Junies Lodge is a place of huge historical importance in Tortuguero. Members of the family including Miss Junie herself, work hard here with great passion and knowledge for this unique area and the wildlife surrounding it.
We were lucky enough to be guided by Miss Junies son Cloid on a Kayak, a night walk and a jungle walk. We were shown a very diverse range of animals, and learned about the local plants and their properties as regards culinary and medicinal uses. The grounds and the staff were excellent and attracted lots of birds and animals in their own right.
The location of the Lodge is perfect, situated up the quiet end of town so there are no noisy establishments located nearby to disturb the peace during your stay. While the accommodation is clean,it is basic and for the duration of our stay of 3 nights, there was no hot water from the tap or the shower, and back of the sink was covered with sealant which had not been removed following a repair.
We were based on the ocean side of the lodge, which we liked, I imagine if you are not keen on the sound of the waves crashing, it is more quiet on the lake side.
If you are interested in the story of the lodge, Cloid has it all at his fingertips and there is a potted history on the back of the evening menu and some amazing photos lining the walls of the restaurant\breakfast room.
We enjoyed the simple breakfast provided and the general ambience of the Lodge during our stay.
- Maddie (10/5): - Lovely relaxed stay at the lodge. Chloe really made our stay excellent - we went on three of his tours (evening turtle hatching, turtle nesting and a canoe trip in the reserve) and I’d recommend them all.
- Bob (10/5): Awesome Place to Stay!! - Awesome place with lots of history and great chicken jerk at the restaurant. Great people great location will return.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Great place, beautiful garden, excellent people. I would recommend it 100%.
- James (10/5): The hotel was very nice, comfortable, well located - The staff was very concerned. The atmosphere was very homelike. The proprietress made homecooked meals in the kitchen. The hotel provided access to very good tours and a good gujide.
- Gabriel (10/5): Very nice and calm spot near the village - Nothing bad to say, everything was as expected and the hotel staff is really nice. You have the beach on one side and the tortuguero canal on the other. The garden is simply beautiful and full of bird and lizard.
Went on canoe trip with Luis and he was the best in town !
Pura Vida !
- Emily (10/5): Great little hotel with amazing tour guide - Great location, booked a canoe tour and our guide was superb, spoke great English and spotted lots of wildlife and gave us plenty of information about them. No air con but most hotels in the are do not offer it either. Ate in the restaurant one evening and the food was tasty, in particular the jerk chicken.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Great tours. Wonderful stay - Especially enjoyed the guided tours: the night walk, the canoe trip and the coconut cooking class.
- marian (10/5): Tortuguera - We really enjoyed our stay - we had a perfect guide Cloid- who took us out for a canoe trip, he was very knowledgable and we saw all sorts of wildlife. The food at Miss Junies was excellent Caribbean style and the staff very helpful. Would definitely recommend this place to stay - beautiful location
- Christine (8/5): Great little hotel - Everyone at the hotel were so helpful. Claude was an excellent guide. Restaurant food very good and location perfect.
- kath (6/5): good Location - Lodge looks lovely from the pictures and I couldn’t knock breakfast one day fruit and omelette second day fruit and pancakes third day fruit and rice with bread .. howerever they speak very little English and as we tried to move room as the safe didn’t work, and we only had one window shutter !! It was difficult. After 2 days they let us change room after constantly moaning. Gardens are wonderful but rooms have a massive problem with wood lice..
- Jane (10/5): Good stay in Tortuquero - Very enjoyable stay. Right on the river & 100 yards to the Caribbean, but not swimmable due to currents. Great tour of the jungle waterways with Cloied Taylor, one of Miss Junies sons. He is amazing at spotting & identifying birds and other wildlife, plants etc. Dinners were delicious. Rooms were simple but comfortable. Beds were fine, Only a 2 minute walk into 'town'. Have hotel make boat taxi reservation when arriving at airport in Tortuquero.
- Tyffany (10/5): Hospitable & quaint little place. - Everything was amazing, from the hospitality to the rooms. We had an ocean view room on the bottom floor which gave us a welcomed breeze through the shutter windows. Security in the evenings was a great addition. We were at the end of the main road into the city centre. Quick and convenient walk from Miss Junie's. Her son, Claude is very passionate & knowledgeable in his tours, which I highly recommend. You won't find high end hotels in this area of Tortuguero but this rustic little lodge gave me what I needed. There is no a/c which is why ocean view is best. If nothing else, they could add speed adjustments to their ceiling fans. I'm hoping to come back for a visit in turtle nesting season.
- susan (8/5): pleasant hotel.enthusiastic guides. tasty meals - pleasant hotel on the edge of the village, situated between the river and the oceon. basic but adequate rooms, simple but basic breakfasts. plenty of wildlife, and good views from the rooms.
- Verified traveler (2/5): No Bueno - Find a better hotel - there are many other good ones.
- Chris (6/5): Quiet location between beach and canal - Attractive 2 storey building in traditional style.
Welcome drink but no reception service most of time.
No swimming available. Sea too rough.
Basic breakfast.
No tea/coffee making facilities.
- Loren (10/5): Sleep to ocean sounds - We absolutely loved it so much at Miss Junies we decided to stay a their night! The rooms are not pretentious, very clean, comfortable and best of all you sleep to sounds of crashing ocean waves. It's sits between the ocean and the river and it could be in a better location at the end of the village. Also, the grounds are constantly being guarded by security so if feels especially safe. Hands down best place to stay in town. Hidden gem!
- Verified traveler (8/5): great location. not fancy. ok - located at the end of the main road, which is very very comfortable. 5 minutes walk to all restaurants & to the walking path of the reserve.
The night & morning tours with Cloedio were great. he is a great guide!
room are very small and quite old. NO air condition (lucky for us it wasn't that hot).
nice breakfast.
- Heidi (10/5): Staff is extremely caring and friendly! - We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Miss Junie's and recommend booking the canoe tour with them. Request to get Cloied, as he was amazing: took his time, was very friendly and truly loves what he does! He loves making people smile :)
