Guest Reviews
- Ritvik (10/5): -
- Katia (8/5): -
- John (8/5): - Turtles, food and staff Noise from road
- Giorgia (9/5): - Beautiful beach , beautiful rooms , relaxing setting can’t swim in the water
spa is in the sister hotel next door, but it is just a room without much ambience, “ ok spa” over all .
Workers are really nice but especially in the restaurant they need to pay more attention to guests and guest requests instead of talking to each other.
Breakfast is good.
Over all food is ok but could be better.
- Yehia (2/5): I didn’t like it - I liked the view, the beach , the staff are friendly They have cleaning issues i found insect in my room and gecko, geckos are everywhere in the hotel. It’s so overpriced
- Rajesh (10/5): Best location, excellent staff, clean and tidy - Beach front, turtle nesting and the staff
- Beatrice (10/5): -
- Kim (9/5): A bit noisy being on the coast road but nice hotel right on the beach - Fabulous food Road noise
- Arik (10/5): Magical Stay and Baby Turtle Release - A beautiful boutique hotel with incredibly kind and attentive staff. The food was excellent, and the rooms are lovely with stunning views. One of the most special experiences during our stay was releasing the newborn baby turtles into the sea. It was truly magical and heartwarming to see how much care the hotel puts into protecting these animals and helping the turtles safely reach the ocean. We had a wonderful stay and would absolutely recommend this place. Everything was just great.
- Hutt (10/5): Best spot on the south coast - Located on one of the nicest spots on the south coast, with quiet, clean sandy beach and turquoise waters. Spacious clean and modern rooms. Very well trained, professional and friendly staff. Fabulous pool for swimming lengths. Great menu and delicious food in the open kitchen restaurant. We were fortunate to see a turtle laying eggs on the beach and also releasing some newly turtle babies in the evenings. Highly recommended. We thought hard and could not pick a single fault.
- Richard (9/5): A relaxing location with an excellent location - The amenities were excellent as was the food. Our room was very spacious and clean. Huge bedroom and bathroom Good location away from the hustle and bustle
- Martin_Suter (4/5): Lots to like but could be so much better with staff training - It’s been a month since our stay at Lantern Boutique Hotel and while my rating on departure would have been 4.5, I can no longer rate it as highly. It was a last minute booking, as we were originally booked into a hotel in the heart of Marissa. We could not have been more glad that we moved down the coast, after we took a tuktuk into town. The density of hotels, the hawkers on the beach and the surfer/backpacker vibe wasn’t what we wanted, so we congratulated ourselves on our decision as we returned to the Lantern.
The hotel is located on a beautiful, secluded stretch of beach, without a lot of people and none of the frenetic energy found in Mirissa. It has 6 rooms, each overlooking the pool, with the beach and the ocean beckoning beyond. Its day beds provide some shade, tranquility and the view, but why are there only 3 and not one per room? Making the guests jockey for prime spots is something that is not necessary, especially when there is space for additional day beds. Behind the day beds, there is a bar, but it’s not staffed, nor does the staff go around periodically to see if you’d like anything to eat or drink. This absence of service, despite having lots of staff standing around in the kitchen/dining room, is a significant shortcoming. The dining room is open air and overlooks the pool. Breakfast is included, and the fresh fruit juice and plates of fruit were nice, but once again, the level of service was wanting. We stayed at the hotel for 5 days, and were served by the same staff each day. And yet our preferences (coffee for me, tea for my wife, butter for the pastries, etc.) felt like things we shouldn’t have to repeat every day. There was no “personal touch”, and no coming over to ask about a coffee refill, more water, or anything.
We ate dinner at the restaurant all but one night, and our opinion definitely went downhill each night. We had hoped to have the opportunity to enjoy local specialties, and indeed, Sri Lanka has some amazing cuisine, but after a crab curry special on the first night (which was just OK), other Daily Specials included Chicken Quesadilla, Four Cheese Pizza, etc. The service was basic, the menu and specials uninspired, and the cost for what you’re getting, very high.
We had no basis for comparison in Sri Lanka, but after staying at Buckingham Place (near Tangalle) for the second half of our stay in the country, The Lantern paled in comparison, despite being significantly more expensive. The difference lay not in the location, both are located on beautiful, secluded stretches of beach, but in the level of staff training and service.
The Lantern Boutique has the potential to be great. The location, property, and rooms are all great. They would be well served by bringing in a real hotelier to observe and train the staff to make it a really special place to stay. For us, in comparison and hindsight, it was only just meh.
- Gregory (10/5): Amazing beach hotel! - Beach location - very friendly staff. N/A - the stay was perfect!
- Rainer (1/5): Scam? Room after booking not available - Cancelation experience.was ok. Probably only we started communicating via booking.com Room not available after booking at booking.com --> reach out via WhatsApp offering us a different place.
Another scam that uses booking.com scam? It happens more often in this area
- Della (7/5): Lovely room quiet beach location - The beach location is beautiful and peaceful. The suite was very clean and comfortable. Very luxurious feel. Great bed. The common area around the pool is a little tired. The restaurant was a bit average although the service was good. We ended up walking up the beach to Zephyr restaurant which is fantastic.
- Olivier (9/5): -
- Arijana (9/5): -
- Danielle (10/5): Amazing stay, would definitely recommend! - We loved it hear so much! Best hotel during our stay in Sri Lanka. Great location to chill after traveling the country. Good kitchen. We absolutely loved the staff - especially Ajith. He showed some really good skills and made the difference during our stay! Private beach was nice, we enjoyed the pool. Also a good stay with a small child. It’s a little noisy because of the road and the early breakfast. But we weren’t too bothered with it.
- Nagia (10/5): - Very beautiful hotel and very kind staff the best hotel in Sri Lanka
- ANTONELLA (10/5): -
- Belinda (10/5): Very enjoyable - The staff were lovely and very accomodating Location is a bit of a distance from Marissa
- Olena (10/5): -
- Szilvia (10/5): -
- Mujde (10/5): -
- Dishan (10/5): Better than I could have hoped for - All rooms have a great view of the beach with easy access to beautiful beach. Our room was stunning and the the staff in particular were great and made it feel comfortable.
The food was also fantastic from the hotel
Arul (the GM) was always on site and checking in to make sure we were well looked after It was a couple of KM’s from the man Mirissa hub but still easily accessible and we had our own beautiful beach in front of us so it was never an issue
- Julia (10/5): Unvergesslich! Vielen Dankan das gesamte Team! - Hier wird Service groß geschrieben. Er ist überragend! So ein wunderbares und aufmerksames Team. Es fehlt Gästen einfach an nichts. Sehr gute Lage direkt am Strand! Etwas abseits vom Trubel in Mirissa, bietet Ruhe zum Entspannen. Das Essen ist grandios. Vielen Dank für den unvergesslichen Aufenthalt. 100 von 10 Punkten.
- tejas (9/5): luxurious comfy boutique stay - excellent room size, breakfast was extraordinary. service staff cleanliness excellent.
makes for a super luxurious boutique stay, with lot of comfort. the welcome drink prepared freshly puts one onto a great start for the stay, the best welcome I have had in all my stays I was hoping for a spa service in the premises, that wasn't there and also was priced a bit steep.
one can't swim in the adjacent beach, one has to have a tutkuk or alternative transport to a swimming beach and the touristy part of Mirissa.
- Gondalia (10/5): -
- Sabrina (10/5): Fantastisch -
- İKLİM (10/5): It was like a dream - Pool , food breakfast room everything was amazing Nothing
- John (10/5): -
- Nitin (9/5): -
- Elke (10/5): Fantastic hotel! - It was a fantastic end of our holiday. The hotel is very good, clean and with a beautifull view on the sea. The staff is really nice and helpful! Kitchen was of a high level as well.
All in all, we would highly recommend this hotel to others. Everything was great!
- Tomas (10/5): Vrátil bych se znovu a znovu. - Vše bylo perfektní, malý kousek ráje. Vše bylo perfektní. Úžasné jídlo.
- Vasco (10/5): -
- Costa (9/5): -
- Pablo (10/5): -
- Anastasia (9/5): Luxary stay with fantastic view over the ocean. - location is wonderful, amazing swimming pool, wonderful room a bit overpriced
- Brahim (8/5): -
- Angelica (10/5): -
- Pierre (9/5): A very pleasant stay - The comfortable room, the beautiful empty beach and the nice food Not a lot to do as it is far away from everything but it is perfect if you just want to relax for a day. A bit expensive also for what it is but it is consistant with other places in Sri Lanka.
- Noel (6/5): - Very close to beach Drinks and food from hotel were a rip off
- Randhi (10/5): Beautiful comfortable stay - It’s amazing beach front. My favorite stay from our whole trip. The beach was too rough for our kids to get into. I picked beachfront thinking we could I guess we weren’t in the right season
- Dushyant (9/5): -
- Anouk (10/5): -
- Rakesh (6/5): Pleasant - Beachfront hotel with stunning ocean views but it didn’t live up to expectations. The suites lacked privacy, being too close to the restaurant and pool area. The food was underwhelming, and overall, it didn’t feel like a true 4- or 5-star experience. Not really worth the price.
- Lakshmi (10/5): Exceptional -
- Timothy (10/5): Exceptional -
- Mervat (10/5): Exceptional -
- Vishal (10/5): Great experience that exceeded expectations. - Everything was great—access to the beach, a fantastic breakfast, and beautiful rooms and service from the staff. Great food. Also lovely Spa services. Clean. It was off-season, so not the hotel's fault. Would have loved to swim in the ocean.
- Alaa (10/5): Clean rooms, delicious breakfast, lovely pool, stunning beach, and friendly staff❤️ - We had a wonderful stay at this hotel. The rooms are nice and clean, and the breakfast was really good — a great way to start the day. The pool was lovely, and the beachfront location made our vacation perfect. The staff were all very nice and friendly, especially Mr. Hansala, who made our stay easy and enjoyable. Thanks for the great experience
- Rosie (10/5): Beautiful spot on the beach - Lovely design hotel and very attentive staff. Such a nice pool and it’s a great location outside of the town. massive breakfast too. A little pricey but we got what we paid for
- Avonisha (6/5): Pleasant -
- Hazel (9/5): Excellent but with a little room for improvement. - Food wasn’t as good as the rest of the facilities. Spa was spectacular! Staff all very helpful, especially two women on reception and masseuse.
- Sarah (10/5): Perfect - We absolutely loved our stay at Lantern Boutique Hotel! The rooms were gorgeous – beautifully styled and so comfortable. Its location is ideal: a peaceful stretch of beach just outside of Mirissa, giving you the best of both worlds – tranquillity with easy access to the buzz of the town.
The staff were all so lovely and made us feel really welcome from the moment we arrived. There were great options for sun beds, whether you wanted to relax by the beach or the pool. Breakfast was delicious every morning – fresh, varied, and beautifully presented.
If I had to be picky, the pool could’ve been a touch cooler – but honestly, everything else was perfect. Would definitely recommend and would love to return one day!
- Nicolas (10/5): Exceptional -
- Cartledge (6/5): Overpriced on a beautiful beach! - We stayed 10 years ago when it was owned by the original owners.
It’s different now.
The property has been well maintained.
The housekeeping staff were great!
The young restaurant staff were not experienced enough, the food was so overpriced and not a good selection.
There was only one Sri Lankan dish offered.
- Heather (10/5): Beautiful Hotel - Beautiful small hotel on the lovely Marissa beach, very clean and comfortable. Good food and friendly staff.
Very touched to be given a birthday cake and the staff sung Happy Birthday to me which made my day!
It’s great that the manager is very keen on the turtle conservation programme and we were able to take part in the release of baby turtles into the sea.
- Lg2986 (9/5): Superb -
- Marta (10/5): it was beyond my expectations - his was our best hotel out of 5 hotels we visited during our 2 week stay in Srilanka. my family consists of 2+2, and the ocean suite on the ground floor was perfect for us. It has direct access to the beach, pool and restaurant through the terrace window which is great when you have kids. The water in the pool is very warm so my kids spend long hours there, it also has two shallow areas which can be great for toddlers or for sunbathing in the shallow water. It is about 20 feet long so it was great for swimming too. The sunbeds were very comfortable and the view of the ocean was perfect. The breakfast consisted of coffee or tea, fresh juice, a fruit plate, a choice of muffin, croissants or my favorite banana bread and one of 11 amazing breakfasts a la carte. As for the noise from the street it wasn't a problem for me, you only notice it during the day if you want to spend some time in silence in your room. When you are next to the pool you will not hear it. At night drivers don't use their horns and the noise from the street is similar to the sound of ocean waves. I regret that I couldn't stay longer.
- Josh (10/5): Exceptional -
- Jo (9/5): Fabulous place we loved it - Absolutely everything! The rooms are stunning and extremely functional, beautiful place with many extra delights such as being on a turtle nesting beach. The only advice we would give is for the (lovely) front of house team in the restaurant to keep improving their language skills so service is smoother.
- Christian (9/5): Superb -
- Rima (9/5): Overall expensive for both location and amenities, but beautifully decorated rooms. - Beautiful room, but expensive for Sri Lanka. Beach was not the cleanest we saw and you could hear the road noise every now and then. Restaurant was expensive and not authentic, would have been nice to have more local food. Many dogs around the property but this seems to be the case across many of the beaches. Loungers and sofas outside in common areas were not covered overnight, making them uninviting to sit on.
- Nelson (10/5): Exceptional - The Beach and proximity to everything
- Matthew (10/5): Exceptional - This was a wonderful place to spend Christmas Day. Huge, comfy rooms, lovely pool and beach area, friendly staff and tasty food. We were even lucky enough to see a turtle come ashore to lay her eggs on Christmas Day after dinner.
- Росен (10/5): Absolutely wonderful! Highly recommended - The location is fabulous. Beautiful beach in front.
The hotel and rooms have wonderful design.
The service and food were great.
We were looked after by Ajith who was lovely, very attentive and personable. Sometimes at night you can hear traffic noise.
- Nadia (9/5): Superb - The beach is a piece of heaven. Beachview rooms are breathtaking
Hotel is 5mins away from the main town and yet secluded and calm.
The staff is great and very very kind Nothing!
- Sophie (7/5): A gem boutique hotel near Mirissa - Facing the beach although there was no mention that the beach is not a swimming beach.. we are beach lovers so we discovered this onsite. The concept is cool! A gem near Mirissa The food was not worth a penny, I am sorry but its tastless!! We spent money on dinner and lunch for nothing.. the staff dont understand basic English and dont have the customer service we’d expect from a 5*
- Ostrovsky_im (10/5): Exceptional -
- Christopher (10/5): VERY MEMORABLE - EVERYTHINGS EXCELLENT
- Peter (7/5): Ok - Expectied a bit more for the Money - a Bit Chess in the Design - restaurant was so so View was nice
- Suzanne (10/5): Great hotel. Great staff and the best food - The staff were exceptional. Nothing was a problem for them. We were very well looked after. They need to keep a menu in the rooms for room service ordering.
Also, need to explain the complimentary soap situation a bit better. We didn't know what that was all about until our last day.
- Delphine (10/5): Amazing beach front hotel - The hotel is really amazing. Eveything was excellent: the view of and closeness to the beach, the cleanliness of the rooms and the restaurant, the food was amazing and varied, the staff always had a smile on their face. Truly one of the best hotels we stayed at. We could not swim in the sea by the hotel because it is too rough. The location is a bit outside of the center of Mirissa and getting a tuktuk can be difficult sometimes. Minor issues compared to the overall amazing experience provided by the hotel.
- Pat (10/5): Exceptional -
- Linda (10/5): Exceptional - Everything was wonderful. The room, the food, the staff, all exceeded my high expectations.
- Melissa (8/5): Lovely hotel. - Lovely room and ocean views. Probably a bit overpriced for what you get.
- Alicia (10/5): Perfect stay down south with young toddler. - We switched here after staying at another hotel and we were so pleasantly surprised. From the moment we arrived, we felt welcome, were given early check in.
The staff here is top notch, they were so attentive to everything, we really wish we could have stayed for longer to really relax and enjoy ourselves more! Everything was great.
- Magdalena (1/5): Bad - Before arrival, I received a link to make a payment for the stay to confirm the reservation. I made the transfer, but after arriving at the hotel, despite having confirmation of the transfer, we were not checked in. I paid again and was promised a refund within 7 days at the latest. To this day I have not received the money, attempts to contact the hotel ended with promises of a refund, a new date was constantly indicated and the money has still not been refunded. I reported the matter further. I warn against such situations.
- Laura (10/5): Perfect luxury beachside stay - The hotel was beautiful and the staff exceptionally helpful and welcoming. Rooms were spacious and very comfortable. Could swim in the ocean as too rough.
- Savio (9/5): Superb - Amazing location, Staff is very kind and attends to requests promptly. Amazing kitchen, The chef cooked up a storm on the day of check out. Fresh grilled lobsters. The administration could improve. We had paid for the room in advance, However was still presented as balance due for payment on the day of check out.
- Nabilah_b (10/5): Exceptional - The service from the staff was excellent. They were warm and very accommodating and often checking in on us. It's one of the best service I've experienced in my travels. The view of the sea was gorgeous and truly relaxing. WiFi at night was a bit slow
- Elena (9/5): Superb hotel in Mirissa - Amazing staff always willing to help and make you happy. Suberb food from breakfast to dinner delivered by a friendly chef and his crew. They have really spoiled us. the hotel is 10 minutes away from weligama beach one of the best surf spot in the area. We truly reccomend it! As many hotels in the area it is close to the main road so you can hear a bit of noise.
- Greg (9/5): Superb - Great hotel, room, food and location right on a beach that felt quite private amongst the craziness of Mirissa and Weligama
- Julian (10/5): Outstanding hotel - This was our favourite hotel for the trip. Extremely well managed, the staff were all very attentive. The facilities and location were great. Breakfast was delicious. No complaints that I can think of.
- Ashanee (7/5): A hotel with potential to be a great boutique hotel which it is not at the moment - Great beach front location
Quiet clean beach.
(But beach unsuitable for swimming)
Good rooms
Good food Small footprint of land, not much of a buffer.
Poorly trained staff.
The restaurant being open to the public was a complete surprise in a boutique hotel of 6 rooms.
Resulting in a lack of privacy.
Loud road noise .
- Mathilde (8/5): Excellent hotel facilities and staff. Noisy nights. - Very Nice hotel and excellent service from staff. Very noisy nights due to traffic from the street and dogs barking on the beach side. Price level at the hotel is relatively high.
- Sung (7/5): Good - Very kind staff and decent food Stray dogs not taken care and someone tried to open our room door around 8:30-9pm in the night.
- Prachi (10/5): Exceptional -
- Lexie (9/5): Great - Very big room, cozy atmosphere and very kind and helpful staff, Some noice from the street and AC, and the bed sheet could have been newer.
- Katrina (10/5): Exceptional - Lantern Boutique was the last Hotel we stayed at during our Sri Lanka trip.
Lantern is exceptional!
The staff are wonderful, the food is divine and the location really is absolute perfect!
Our only regret is that we couldn’t stay longer!
Thank you Lantern Boutique,
We will definitely be back for another stay!
Katrina & Greg
