Guest Reviews
- Michal (10/5): An amazing experience in traditional Japan - Wonderful please in a wonderful village. Our host was so kind and eager to help, the food was delicious and the Onsen was amazing (got to sit in an open air Onsen while it rains, the perfect experience) Nothing what so ever
- Ollie (8/5): The most friendly host, and an excellent traditional Japanese guest house with private onsen. - The kindest and most generous host made the stay so lovely. The private onsen was also an excellent addition that made for a very relaxing stay. There were quite a lot of restaurants shut in the local town, I think we came in the off season, so I would recommend eating at the hotel.

- Wapelhorst (8/5): - Beautiful little hotel, it is so cozy & feels like you’re staying in someone’s home. Love the decorations & general vibe. Owner is very accommodating & kind. Close to everything. Love the onsens toob Nothing
- Angelique (10/5): -
- Urszula (10/5): A magical private oasis in the heart of Shibu Onsen. - For those who value peace and privacy. A very relaxed place, great private onsen baths as well as dedicated female and male ones. A delicious breakfast in Japanese style to eat in full privacy. Last but not least, a very kind service. We only wish we could stay longer! It’s a place of 400 years old history, so it has its challenges with dust. But you can also see it as charming.
- Neli (10/5): - Loved the private spa, the owner was super nice, breakfast is exquisite - the place is a gem
Tellement envie d’y retourner !!!! Rien
- Kitchaporn (10/5): - Breakfast was amazing and staffs were very nice. Location was also great. No drying mode in the washing machine.
- Eleanor (9/5): Traditional Japanese onsen experience! Highly recommend for a day trip :) - Wonderful, welcoming host and comfortable stay! Staying here allows you access to the 9 public onsens (shoutout onsen hopping) in the local area as well as onsens in the hotel itself. There are lots of restaurant options nearby as well as the monkey park. Once you get situated, almost everything is easily accessible by walking or taking the bus. I recommend splurging on a taxi to the hotel itself - the combined bus ride and walk take up much more time.
Onsen public + onsen privatif exceptionnellement beau.
- Kasemsook (10/5): Fantastic outdoor bath with comfortable facilities of historical ryokan - Private onsen (outdoor)
Warm and comfortable futon and blanket
Environment of historical ryokan
The Owner hospitality
- Tirramara (10/5): - The room was spacious, and staff friendly. There was no dinner available in the hotel
- Ieva (10/5): - Onsens on site were very pleasant and nice.
- Akistula (10/5): Highly recommended - Everything Nothing
- Juan Ignacio (10/5): Excellent stay, probably will come back in the future. - Everything. The place, the staff, the attention received. The location is very convenient. Close to the shops of the city.
We definetly will return in the future. nothing
- Caroline (10/5): Excellent - The owner was exceptional and couldn’t do enough for us. Nothing was too much trouble Nothing
- Henry (10/5): -
Labai tradiciniai. Skanu. Rami vieta. Nuotraukas internete reikėtų atnaujinti. Natūroje vaizdas geresnis
- Emanuel (10/5): Amazing value, can't understand it wasn't fully booked - We were greeted by a very nice man and felt extremely welcome from the moment we stepped into this beautiful building. There are three onsens - one for men, one for women, and one that can be reserved. The latter is the one on the pictures, outdoor. We were one of few guests in the accommodation this night, so we went to the private one twice and probably stayed for 30-60 minutes. It felt like such a luxury to be able to take a bath in this place!
We were a bit unsure what to expect after reading some of the reviews here, but were pleasantly surprised. Yes, there's dust in some places and one or two cobwebs but we never felt that the place was "unclean". We didn't see a single bug and didn't experience any smell related to the accommodation.
The building isn't newly renovated, but that only adds to the charm. Whenever this was built it must've been built with exceptional craftsmanship and materials. And it feels well taken care of. This was the highlight of our Japan trip! Someone in another review mentioned some smell. The whole town, due to the precense of sulphur rich hot springs, smells a bit different due to the sulphur. We quickly got used to it but that's good to know. It's nothing too bad, just something that came as a surprise. It's enough to wonder, "did somebody just fart?" every now and then when walking along the street. But like you're not really sure. And then you walk for another 15 minutes. This is going to be the case wherever you stay in this town.
The only thing that would make our room more cozy would be a warmer light for the ceiling lamp. But all in all, it felt like we were in a movie.
- stacey (9/5): It was fantastic! - A delightful private onsen in the outdoors, and nice indoor onsen as well. Charming location tucked away down a little alley but close to everything. Nice staff. Amazing Japanese breakfast with 12 different dishes in your own private space. A little dusty in the corners.
- Tracy (10/5): Excellent. Great location, staff, spotless, private onsen, beautiful breakfast. - Lovely location, the owner couldn’t do enough for us. Welcoming, kind and helped us arrange taxis and spent time giving helpful advice to enhance our trip. The whole building was spotlessly clean and breakfast was out of this world - so much care and attention to its preparation and display and it was delicious. Thank you, a wonderful stay and I would highly recommend this Ryokan. Nothing, it was all great.
- jenni (10/5): - So charming! A perfect ryokan stay for our family
C’è cura in ogni minimo dettaglio. Esperienza meravigliosa. Niente
- Reyes (10/5): Everything was absolutely amazing!!! Best stay of the trip by far - incredible service from staff, so clean, and their p - Everything was absolutely amazing!!! Best stay of the trip by far - incredible service from staff, so clean, and their private onsen was incredible. Located close to little shops and the public onsens as well! And their breakfast was to die for. Truly the best experience yet. I will absolutely be coming back to stay here in the future. My only regret is not staying longer!! 10/10 recommend
- Federico (10/5): -
- Basil (10/5): -
- Mary New Zealand (10/5): Traditional ryokan with amazing facilities and staff - We stayed here for one night but could have stayed longer. The room was large and spacious with futon beds, a seating area, table and chairs, tea and coffee. The hotel had 2 onsens - one in a stunning outdoor location, and another inside the hotel - both were amazing, but especially the outdoor onsen was very special. There are comfortable seating areas and lounges on every floor, and on the ground floor free coffee from a proper machine!
The location was very central for walking in the old town and surrounded by all the public onsens and numerous restaurants.
Reception staff were very welcoming and helpful with local advice. We would love to stay here again thank you. That we couldn't stay longer!
- Sylvana Margarita (10/5): - Private Bath was wonderful and the breakfast was spectacular
- Elizabeth (10/5): -
- Charlotte (10/5): -
- Julia (10/5): Special - A supremely gorgeous ryokan tucked away from the main streets, and next to the best public bath in town, though rivaled by this ryokan’s private onsens.
Our innkeeper was fantastically kind, welcoming, and helpful. The breakfast spread was delightful (by special request). The room was warm and our beds were made upon arrival. This place is special and charming.
For incoming Westerners, note that the rooms have a private toilet but no shower, as you are meant to bathe in the onsen. It’s good for you :)
- Ryan (10/5): Relaxing and magical! - The owner was very kind and even left a note at the front desk on a whiteboard to greet us! The private outdoor onsen was amazing - beautiful, clean, and relaxing. The indoor male/female onsens were also nice and clean. The room was beautiful and historic. The bedding on the futon was comfortable and kept us warm throughout the evening. Being an old building the insulation was bad (which we expected, but it's something to keep in mind) and it got cold (though we were supplied with a space heater that was sufficient for our room at night). There also is no proper shower, you just bath at the onsen bath.
- David (10/5): - The location was fantastic. We’d heard great things about the spa town and it really is a magical place. It was also perfect for visiting the Snow Monkey Park, which is just a short bus ride from the hotel. The breakfast was excellent, and our host made a vegan version for my wife, and we really enjoyed having the chance to use the private onsen. The beds are traditional futons, so they’re quite firm, which might take some getting used to. Also, as it’s a traditional building, the room was a little cold when we visited in early March (which is to be expected!), but the heater provided in the room worked really well and kept us warm.
- Virginia (10/5): We had a wonderful stay at Ontario Hishiya Torazo. We only wish we had been able to stay longer. - The rooms were large, the baths were lovely, the breakfast was tasty. There was no one there when we arrived, but we arrived earlier than the check in time
- Shay (10/5): Authentic and beautiful with great Japanese soul - The owner is very kind and welcoming. The house is a real traditional Ryokan 100 years old. Well kept, beautiful, and comfortable. The private Onsen in the property is magic. We loved it and certainly will be back for more of it.
- Cherylynn (10/5): -
- King Javan (10/5): Gran Ryokan - La decoracion, atencion, limpieza y baños termales.
Vasca onsen all'aperto davvero suggestiva
- Tayyab (8/5): -
- Franka (10/5): Amazing experience! - Amazing Ryokan experience!
Great as a family as you could use the private onsen and be there together :) - it was always available for us.
The staff was amazing and so helpful with everything - pointing out restaurants and making reservations for dinner and taxi for the morning ride to the station.
Amazing breakfast! - take your time there!
- Lewis (10/5): - The hosts were amazing, so helpful, informative, and friendly. That i only stayed one night. i wish I could have stayed longer
- Kahla (10/5): An experience not just a stay - The cleanliness, location, warm and friendly staff and overall experience was incredible. Exceeded expectations. This stay felt like home. This is not regular accomodation this is truly an experience. The outdoor Onsen was magical. Would come back to Japan just to stay here. Nothing
- Michael (8/5): -
- Christian Joan (10/5): -
- Duncan (10/5): - Brilliant place to stay. Highlights were the lovely bloke running the place who was hospitable and friendly, the very atmospheric old ryokan and the amazing rotenburo (outside onsen). We had a 6am onsen the morning we left with snow gently falling on our heads, very memorable! Brekkie was the Japanese style and absolutely delicious, one of the best we had in Japan. We did the tour of 9 public onsen and they were also fantastic. I feel for them trying to heat the place- it's an old building and despite their best efforts the room got chilly at night.
- Markus (10/5): -
- Tomas (10/5): -
- Elena (3/5): The onset is nice, you can make it private but it’s absolutely dirty everywhere. It’s very dirty and dusty. The smell is horrible in the wardrobe and fridge was dirty inside.
- Julian (9/5): Magical place to stay in Shibuonsen - Beautiful and magical old ryokan The in-onsen was a bit too simple, and dirty
- Lauren (10/5): Exceptional - Can’t recommend this place enough ! The owner was so lovely and helpful and the accommodation was incredible. The rooms were gorgeous and the private onsen was a highlight. Would definitely come back here !!! Nothing it was amazing
- Annabella (9/5): Best onsen in town! - Fabulous ryokan with the best outdoor hot spring bath in town. Really friendly and helpful owner. We saw lots of snow monkeys and also fireflies in the town park over the river. It was great. Town was very quiet though on a Wednesday night with a lot of restaurants closed but we found somewhere to eat in the end.
- Sarah (10/5): Magical experience in Shibu Onsen with incredibly kind and helpful owner - a very special place! - I had an exceptional stay at the riyokan that exceeded my (already high) expectations. The owner is so welcoming, friendly and really helpful. He let me check in when I arrived a bit earlier than the check-in time. He also provided all the information about the town and Snow Monkey Park that I needed: a list of restaurants and his recommendations, bus timetables to get to Yudanaka Station and the Snow Monkey Park, an explanation of how the public onsen work. The day I checked out he let me keep my luggage at the property so I could go to the Snow Monkey Park. Communication was great for everything I needed, and when I had more complicated questions/requests, we used google translate. The room was spacious, clean and comfortable, with a private bathroom, and with yukata and some other clothes included to wear during your stay. The private onsen at the property are beautiful! There's a system to hang a sign outside the outdoor onsen so that you can use it privately for a while. There are also spaces inside the property to sit and read. Breakfast was fantastic - a large, traditional meal prepared in a private room with tatami. The location is unbeatable - all the public onsen are just a few minutes walk away. The owner gives you a key that allows access to them from 6am-10pm, and the private onsen at the property are available 24 hours. A nighttime private onsen visit is magic! The snow monkey park is only a short bus ride away, although I ended up walking there and back - for those who enjoy walking or hiking, it's an easy hour's walk away and the scenery is beautiful. I couldn't recommend this place more if you are planning a trip to Shibu Onsen or the area. The owner goes above and beyond, and it's one of the most magical places I've stayed at in Japan! Nothing!
- Keith (9/5): Superb - Location could not have been better. Host was helpful and friendly. Outdoor bath was divine and indoor baths were good too. Rooms were clean and extremely comfortable. Breakfast was tasty. The listing on Booking.com does not make it clear that you have to reserve dinner in advance by reaching out to the property, so I missed out on dinner.
There was something gross in the outdoor bath. Not sure how long it had been there or how often that gets cleaned. Everything else was very clean.
- Anonymous (10/5): Exceptional - It was very clean, and had cute details.
- Lou (10/5): Awesome stay in onsen town - Very big room, comfy and clean. Great decoration and atmosphere.
The outdoor bath are very nice, several temperatures are available and they can be privatised.
Traditional breakfast can be ordered by message when making the reservation and is copious and tasty.
Great location. Walkable distance to the monkey park and you can go around the town in yukata and enjoy the public bathes Nothing
- Sheila (9/5): Very Cozy Stay - Torazo the owner is great, super friendly and helpful. He is respectful and provides you a lot of privacy even though the inn is small. The building is older and could use newer carpet and fresh paint. But it is a comfortable place with nice baths on site. It isn't fancy, but old style and clean. Sleeping on the floor is rough for me, but if you want extra pads they will set that up for you. You also have access to the key to use the public baths in town. There is laundry on site if you need it. Also if you drive ask Torazo for directions to his garage. We had breakfast with our stay. It was very Japanese with all the little dishes, soup and tea. You sit on the floor and take your time. It was so nice to walk around town in the Yukata and soak. Showers are not in the room you use the onsen area. It's not far from the Snow Monkey Park! Check out is 10am.
- Amis (8/5): Very good -
- Ingrid (8/5): Warm welcome in a pittoresque village - Beautiful location in a historic building. Private onsen was very pretty. Breakfast was beautifully presented and was delicious and for us a special experience as a first Japanese breakfast. The host was very kind. Close to Jigokudani Yaen-Koen where you can see the snow monkeys. The only thing I would say is that there were dustwebs hanging of the ceiling
- Lixian (8/5): Lovely culture experience but a bit pricy overall - In house outdoor onsen possible for private use
Traditional building with history
Culture experience Unfortunately the shower has cold water only when we were there, ended up using onsen water mixed with tap water to wash hair and shower, not the most comfortable thing to do
Japanese style breakfast which I didn’t mind but partner not a fan of.
- Matteo (10/5): Perfect experience! - This is such a beautiful ryokan, highly recommended! Kind staff, beautiful room and a wonderful outdoor onsen.
Don’t miss their delicious traditional Japanese breakfast in the morning.
- Debra (10/5): Perfect ryokan experience - The private onsen is so beautiful, with three temperature zones. The building is authentic and lovely to experience. The breakfast was traditional and outstanding. The staff is so kind and accommodating. There is a suite with two rooms for families. The location is unbeatable, next to Onsen no 9 and 1 min walk to the bus stop to the monkeys.
- Nancy (10/5): So glad we stayed here! - This is a special place with history and kindness. We loved our stay.
- Rachael (10/5): Exceptional -
- Adam (10/5): Exceptional - Definitely book with the meals included, some of the best food we had in Japan.
- Robin (10/5): Exceptional -
- Brian (10/5): Our favorite stay in Japan - Pure magic! I can’t overstate the wonderful time we had here. It’s been run by the Torazo family for 400 years and the current Torazo is a pure gem! Super friendly and accommodating, he even made insanely cool origami dragons for our kids! Don’t miss out on this special place.
- Roland (6/5): Pleasant - The location was excellent and the staff was friendly and helpful (minimal English). The rooms are comfortable if not a little shabby. It would be helpful if they would walk you thru the features of the room.... the climate control, the light switch locations, etc... They also should tell their guests to be considerate of other guests and minimize stomping around on the upper floors. I was disappointed that breakfast was only available one day and that the showers in the bath area were not working. They have their own beautiful outdoor onsen as well as an indoor bath area.
- Tamsin (10/5): Truly a magical experience reminiscent of old world Japan. Pre-order the trad Japanese breakfasst!!! - Private onsen was just brilliant and serene, open area above one of the baths allows snow to gently land on you as you soak in the waters. Tatami mats and futons were supremely comfortable for an authentic ryokan experience. Truly a magical experience reminiscent of old world Japan. Hot tip, order the traditional Japanese breakfast (must be pre-ordered)!
- Alejandro (10/5): Exceptional -
- Ahlen (10/5): A wholesome authentic traditional stay in the heart of Shibu Onsen 💗 - The location was perfect and in the heart of Shibu Onsen. Our hosts were very lovely. They gave us good reccomendations for food, drink and where to go for the best onsens. They provided yukatas for us to wear, and had a private onsen (which i've learnt is quite rare) which guests can use. They also made us a traditional breakfast, nicely presented, good portions and delicious; it made my heart melt! Very pleased with our room, it was quiet, although we feel like all our guests are respectful and kept the volume to a low, so we were lucky. We sleep on futons, laid out beautifully, and we had room to sit for tea. When we left our hosts gave us an origami swan that he made himself which was adorable. I would highly reccomend staying here again. The place is old, but well maintained by our hosts. We mainly washed in the onsens and there was no options for showers which would've been good, but we didn't mind at all.
- Grace (10/5): Exceptional -
- Laignelet (10/5): Exceptional - Prívate Onsen amazing, Monkey Valley just near by amazing, Ski resort station amazing
- Tean (7/5): Full Onsen Experience—For Better or Worse! - Room was spacious and gave a traditional vibe.
Staff was nice and friendly.
Great location to access all the 9 public baths and the bus to Snow Monkey Park.
Close to many of the neighborhood diners. Everything was onsen—like, there wasn’t any other hot water supply except whatever flowed straight into the onsen. And since the onsen was shared… uh, not gonna lie, I wasn’t entirely sure how clean I felt after the bath.
Ended up soaking in the onsen anyway, then hit a cold water rinse after—felt like I unlocked full Wim Hof mode. Definitely an experience, but yeah, something to keep in mind if you're particular about your showers.
No toothbrush, toothpaste, comb and shaving needs provided.
- Morrison (10/5): Exceeded our expectations in so many ways! 10/10 would book again - The traditional atmosphere of the space was gorgeous and cozy. The host and staff were amazing, very helpful and kind. Location was perfect for everything we wanted to explore and the private onsen was to die for! The photos don't do this place justice. Would definitely stay here again!
- Lizette (9/5): Superb -
- Rodolfo (8/5): Unforgettable winter experience,, - Breakfast is excellent and delicious They have NO hot shower,, after soaking in their Onsen, you will use the same hot water in the Onsen to clean your body which I did not do, left with no choice I cleaned my body with cold shower and the weather that time was snowing,
0 degrees Celsius,,
- Raye (10/5): Wish we had stayed longer. - This was the highlight of our trip, wish I'd known how good it was as would have spent another night at least. The location is fantastic, the owner was so sweet, obviously you have the monkey park on your doorstep, but you also have 9 onsens to try out as well as the ones in the hotel. Honestly, great stay and would highly recommend. Honestly, can't think of a single thing. Only thing I will warn you about, the locals are insanely friendly and you will end up hammered if you have a drink with them haha.
- Edward (10/5): Exceptional -
- Orélie (9/5): A lovely ryokan experience! - First time we stay at a Ryokan and we enjoyed our stay very much! It’s fun to wear the yukata around and get immersed in this traditional world. The private Onsen is pure bliss!
We slept well on the tatami and the room was big! The owner is adorable and make our stay very comfortable.
We enjoyed the traditional breakfast and it was worth it! It’s a very old house and I understand it may not be sparkling clean, totally fine with me! But I noticed they had not cleaned around the washbasin for a while which surprised me as usually the washroom/bathroom is always a very clean area in Japan.
- Clint (10/5): Exceptional - Great onsen at the Ryokan, owner very friendly and helpful. We really enjoyed our stay.
- Michelle (9/5): Lovely traditional Japanese dwelling - It was a charming old place with wonderful hot springs I would have loved a private bathroom
- Guido (10/5): Exceptional -
