Guest Reviews
- Terence (10/5): - My stay at Baan SamSa Hotel was excellent from start to finish. The staff were incredibly friendly, welcoming and always happy to help with any request or local advice. The rooms were large, airy and beautifully positioned overlooking the Nam Khan River, creating a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere. Each morning the delicious breakfast was a real highlight, with fresh and tasty options to start the day. The hotel is also perfectly located near the top end of the peninsula, making it easy to walk to all the major attractions, temples, cafés and markets in Luang Prabang. I would happily stay here again and highly recommend it to anyone visiting the town.
- Maggie (10/5): I would stay here again - Everything was great, especially the staff. The breakfast was delicious and location perfect
- Merran (10/5): - Atmospheric, charming, tastefully decorated. Excellent location
- Marie (10/5): Perfect stay! We’ll be back! - The property is beautiful and carefully renovated. The size of our room was perfect and the breakfast was excellent! Noise was coming from the street and the shutters weren’t able to block that, but this is to be expected.
- Alexandria (10/5): a wonderful stay along the river - Wonderful staff from check in to check out. The breakfast was also a highlight of each morning. The location is also perfect for Luang Prabang, and there are tons of restaurant options walking distance from the hotel
- Manon (10/5): Beautiful - The staff is welcoming and always very helpful.
The room is lovely - very well decorated with a big bed and a beautiful bathroom.
The breakfast is amazing! It comes as a set and then one choice from the menu, with different jams every day. Right in the center of Luang Prabang, 10min away from the night market, next to wonderful restaurants.
- Nita (10/5): Baan Samsa felt like home while we were in Luang Prabang. - Fantastic location. Max, at the front desk, was a shining star: friendly, kind, efficient and professional. All services were excellent. The bed was not comfortable.
- Nita (9/5): -
- Petra (9/5): Zentral, geräumige Zimmer mit Flair, nettes Personal - Zentral gelegen, schönes geräumiges Zimmer in renoviertem Kolonialstilgebäude mit sehr aufmerksamem Personal. Sehr gut englisch sprechend. Gleich daneben sind zwei sehr gute Restaurants (mit Kochkursen), man sollte Plätze reservieren, weil sonst ausgebucht. Besser ein Zimmer im 1. Stock nehmen.
- Bryony (7/5): Reliable option in a town with lots of choice - The Apsara has been rents refurbished and called Baan Samsa. It’s a lovely old building on the riverside. The rooms are large and comfortable. It’s in a good location.
The staff are lovely and really helpful, especially the daytime receptionist (I’m sorry I didn’t catch his name). The road is fairly quiet except for river construction along the bank that goes on from about 7.30am-6pm. But that will end eventually. However, lots of tourist buses park on the road outside the hotel at 5.30am to drop off people going to the monks’ Almsgiving. The building is old so windows aren’t that soundproofed - you can hear the stream of engines, doors slamming, people talking. It will go quiet for half an hour then resume but it’s all done by 7am. Take earplugs.
- Hilary (7/5): Lovely location - just avoid the upper floor! - Excellent location close to the old town.
Now under new and enthusiastic manegment from my previous visit some 13 years ago - but still the place to be. There are long term continuing noisy river works taking place just outside the hotel (OK - maybe 30 yeards away). Reckon on another year before they finish. No change in room rates to reflect this continuing racket!
Just avoid paying extra for the top floor - noise goes upwards, and its not a river view, just a tree view. Ground floor rooms are slightly larger and very slightly quieter, and $15 a night cheaper.
- Nicola (8/5): A great place to stay in Luang Prabang - Very friendly front desk and the location No complaints
- helene (10/5): Très bel hôtel - L'emplacement, la déco, l'accueil et le petit déjeuner Rien
- Margaret (6/5): -
- Chloe (9/5): - Lovely old fashioned rooms with high ceilings. Stayed on the top floor. In the middle of the old bit of town. Bit of noise from the construction on the river. Should be finished soon. Breakfast could have been better.
- Valentina (10/5): Exceptional - Beautiful rooms with a very friendly staff! Thank you for looking after us!
- Hannelore (7/5): Good - Nettes Hotel in Superlage am Fluss
- Robert (10/5): Exceptional - A charming, comfortable, and welcoming place to stay. The Apsara is a real treasure, and a place one would happily return to on future visits.
- Caroline (9/5): Stylish and very comfortable - Location and style - I was slightly disappointed that more use wasn’t made of the bar/dining room by other guests, perhaps there could be some events or special offers to encourage that?
- Steve (9/5): I'd stay here again... - Located on the Nam Khan river. Note that this is not the Mekong River. I had a room on the 2nd floor with a ‘river view’. While the room had a balcony, you have to stand up at the edge to actually see the river as the wall is a but high to see over when sitting and then there is foliage. Not an issue for me, but it may be for some who expect a river view.
Room was from times gone by. I state this in a very positive manner. There was nothing hotel-ish about the room. If I lived in an old house, I could see a bedroom and bath area being designed and furnished as such. All was clean and comfortable. Between the AC and the ceiling fan, the room was quite comfortable at night.
Breakfast was adequate – not a buffet. Coffee or tea, fresh juice, two pieces of toast, sliced fresh fruit, and a choice of an egg dish, pancakes, or a Lao dish. I’m a big believer in protein in the morning, so egg dishes it was.
A few tips, but not to take away from the property. The hotel does not arrange transportation from the train station; it just advises to take one of the minivans. The best I could figure out is that a shared van, fixed price of 40,000 KLP, takes you to a central point in town and then you arrange for a tuk tuk or walk. I grabbed a private van for 150,000 KLP. I have no idea if that is the going rate or not, but it worked and it was a 30 minute ride. Be sure you have the address with you. There are dozens of hotels, guesthouses, hostels, etc. and you can’t expect the driver to know everyone. (Apparently GPS is not a thing here.)
Also, the property is not ADA-friendly. Narrow steps up and down and you handle your own luggage (although I’m sure you could ask for help, but it is not the standard). Finally, and this was very good for me, there was no TV in the room.
The property does make restaurant recommendations depending on who is on duty. On the negative side, transportation arrangements to the train station, were a bit variable. The evening staff told me 325,000 LKP. The morning staff told me 250,000 LKP. Still a bit more than what I paid for my ride to the property. When I mentioned that to both staff members, they looked ‘puzzled’. It is only a couple USD difference, but it’s the principle.
Also I felt as if I was being pushed out. My taxi time went from 1130 to 1110. Twice on my checkout morning (1200 checkout), the staff was peaking out of what I think is their work room, each time I exited my room. The second time, was when I was taking the first of my 3 bags downstairs, they were in my room immediately to start cleaning. It doesn’t offend me, but it was odd.
Note that the Nam Khan River is undergoing a flood control project and work seems to occur 7 days a week. While work doesn't start too early, once the dump trucks start dumping rock, it can be loud. Just a FYI if you're a late sleeper.
Finally, I'm an early riser and I like to walk. On morning two, I went out at 0545, but the front doors are essentially locked. I startled the night staff. For my next morning walk, I let them know the night before.
- Lisa (9/5): Superb - Beautiful hotel and setting on the river, lovely colonial style rooms, excellent service and breakfast Noise from the construction in the river nearby
- Perrine (7/5): Not as good as expected given the price range - The staff was very kind and the room clean with a comfortable bed The room was very dark, no windows and no mosquito nets to be able to air it. It smelt of new paint. Room limited to hang clothes as well as toiletry options (no hair dryer, cotton buds...).
Be aware that there is currently quite some noise from the construction along the river bank.
- Sourabh (10/5): Exceptional -
- Guido (5/5): Disappointing stay - Rooms are well decorated and spacious. Clean. First of all the bedding: the mattress was old so you were lying in a pit. Secondly: the hotel is located on one of the busiest roads of the city with traffic all day. On top there were some road works going on. All that, made it a very noisy room while there were so many nice beatiful and quiet hotels in the backstreets. Last but not least: breakfast was very poor.
We were very disappointed with our stay, especially by the noise from the street in our room….
- Gary (10/5): - Very friendly and helpful; staff. Would definitely stay there again. The best location to see Luang Prabang. Close to good restaurants and shops.
- Sophie (9/5): Serene and comfortable - Serene, beautifully designed hotel in a gorgeous setting on the riverfront of the old town. Walk to everything. Pristine room and gorgeously soft sheets. Helpful staff (thank you Loom and Christopher!). Delicious breakfast on the verandah. Lots of good restaurants nearby (we loved Lost in Baan for high-end fusion, Nang Tao for simple noodle soup). Occasional noise at night (gongs, etc!) but whir of excellent fan provided and/or earplugs resolve this.
- Penny (10/5): An exceptional hotel with attentive and accommodating staff. - The Apsara is a lovely characterful building that is very well appointed and in keeping with the style and age. Our room had everything needed for a very comfortable stay (7 nights) and we could have stayed longer. The hotel is well positioned making exploring Luang Prabang easy. Luang Prabang a lovely place to visit and to spend time and staying at the Apsara enhanced this. Good English spoken by the staff and excellent assistance when help needed. Nothing to add here.
- A (9/5): Wonderful little property - stylish - where “East meets West” - Overlooking the Namkhan river only a few hundred metres away from where it meets the Mekong, the location is as good as it gets. The rooms are well appointed and furnished with local accents in mind. Great bathroom. Probably one of the best wine selections in town. Also a plus many are offered by the glass. The breakfast was too restrictive to the extent it was either muesli or eggs. I’ve not seen this in Asia where breakfasts tend to be the meal with the most variety and ample volumes and selection. Also, there were no alternative milk options. I stayed at 4 other properties while in L.P. and the Apsara was certainly the noisiest but overall not dramatic.
- Dawn (9/5): Superb -
- Simon (9/5): Superb -
- Simon (9/5): Superb -
- Jane (10/5): What a wonderful spot to rest your head! - I wish i had of been able to spend more time in such a lovely bedroom space. Was not in the main building but not a problem as i had everything I needed. Stylishly kitted out and such a divinely comfy bed! Lush shower space with cute colour co-ord bags for all the courtesy disposables. Plants in your room, plants on the balcony! Went to Tamarind Lao cuisine for dinner...which was amazing! Lovely 1 night stay...my only negative is that there was a lot of voices/tours etc leaving outside at 6/6.30am...bring ear plugs!
- Peter (10/5): Exceptional - Great hotel centrally located on the quiet side river. Friendly, helpful staff, comfortable rooms and very good breakfast.
- paul (8/5): - Loom the manager is awesome. He’ll take great care of your every whim.
Only warning is that hundreds of people show up at 5:30 am for the monk procession so if you’re a light sleeper you will be woken. They all move on by 7am . At 8 am the construction workers start on the new river wall. I am sure all the hotels along the river have the same noise.
Other than the commotion everything excellent.
- Mary (10/5): Comfortable overnight with great breakfast. - Beautiful old woof hotel with great ambience.
- Steve (10/5): - Charming hotel by the river very close to the attractions in Luang Prabang
- Preetha (9/5): A charming little gem in Luang Prabang - Great location, well-appointed rooms, very clean and lovely staff. slightly creaky floors in the room, noise from construction outside.
- Michael (6/5): - Not top of the line but for the price I liked it. Good location and friendly staff.
- James (10/5): Great location, wonderful host. - The location was excellent - close to everything.
Quiet, clean & comfortable room.
Breakfast was delicious.
Host was outstanding & arranged some great tours for me.
- Suzi (9/5): Superb -
- Ron (3/5): Poor -
- Marinus (10/5): Outstanding choice in one of the main attractions in Lao. Also a great start for a Mekong Cruise! - Breakfast was included and outstanding! Staff were great, very helpful, also assisted with organizing transportation. The main attraction of the towen, the alms-giving ceremony, as well as the temples, are right by the hotel. Get up at 5am and go see it, respectfully. The location was a bit noisy during the day, mostly due to work being done to stabilize the river. However, that is a temporary nuisance, and it got very quiet when it mattered, at night.
- Richard (8/5): Good location, friendly staff, basic room - Good location for walking. Staff were very nice. Breakfast was tasty. It's an old building with squeaky floors. Room was rather dark and the lighting inside was minimal.
- R (9/5): Superb -
- David (9/5): Very enjoyable stay in lovely Luang Prabang - Lovely, old style hotel in a superb location next to excellent restaurants. Breakfast was very good and the staff were fabulous. My room was quite dark and there is no swimming pool.
- Mark (10/5): - I like the style of the house and friendless of the staff.
- Ines (9/5): I will come back soon! - Everything was clean, excellent Employees, perfect breakfast, downtown. nothing
- John (9/5): enjoyable in every way - excellent staff
comfortable room
delicious breakfast nothing
- jerry (10/5): A Must Stay! - The manager Lome is wonderful! Service and room were great. Also arranged a bike ride for us. Provided bikes to just roam around town.
- Claudia (8/5): I would stay again. - Service. Good bed. Location.
- Vieng-savang (9/5): Superb -
- Van (10/5): Comfortable and great atmosphere - Perfect location, friendly staff, great breakfast, comfortable and quiet rooms… a real pleasure to stay there Nothing
- Maria (4/5): Disappointing -
- Ben (10/5): Understated charm in an ideal location with amazing staff - This was my fourth time at this hotel over many years. It still retains all its charm and personality. It's in an ideal location and the staff and management offer an experience second to none. I particularly like the fact its understated, quiet but centrally located right next to the river. I have stayed in other places in Luang Prabang but always seem to drift back here. That says a lot. They also have an excellent wine cellar at very reasonable prices Nothing
- Jessica (6/5): Excellent location - I love the location. Having been to LPB 16 times, I prefer the old town and Apsara is perfectly located. The staff is very kind and helpful and the breakfast superb. My only complaint is that if you are sensitive to light in the room and noise the room is poorly insulated. The curtain partially covers the window that exposes to the road and the light floods the room making it hard to sleep. The door closes partially so noise comes in too. Other than that the room is simple and spacious. The room and lack of curtain to cover the large window/ door which made it hard to sleep.
- Seok (9/5): Superb - The staff is very very helpful. Arrange transport, to airport or waterfall. Show us map and places to visit. Mr. Lum (sorry if I spell it wrongly) is helpful and always have a smile. location is superb.
- Carlos (9/5): Superb -
- Arthur (8/5): Great place to stay - Very friendly and accommodating staff All is fine
- Carlos (7/5): Good -
- Julie (9/5): Superb - The staff are friendly & helpful. Room was authentic heritage overlooking the riverside with a balcony. Very relaxing feel, clean & comfortable bed.
- Michael (8/5): - Helpful staff, good location, good value for money.
- Oleg (7/5): Reasonable stay at great location - Location is top , rooms we found a little bit not to our taste, however high celling in old building has certain charm We were disappointed with breakfast. In low season restaurant wasn't really function.
- Butler (10/5): Exceptional -
- SIEW ENG SHARON (6/5): - Room not in the main building. Inconvenient access to upstair room n breakfast area.
- Wallace (8/5): Very good -
- Wallace (8/5): Very good -
- Arnold (10/5): Great location, very clean and comfortable room, fantastic stafff - The staff and managers are so kind and welcoming. The room was comfortable and very clean. The location was perfect- right in the heart of the old town. Though it was incredibly hot while we were visiting in June, being right in the center of town made it easy to return to our room at the hottest parts of the day. We watched the alms giving several times as it was literally a two minute walk to the Main Street. Though the street could be a little noisy with traffic, occasionally, it was never a problem, and in fact it was fun people watching from our ( little) balcony. Nothing
- Max-76 (8/5): Very good -
- Sebastian (9/5): Superb -
- Steven (9/5): Superb - Excellent location beside 2 of the best restaurants, across the street from River, one block from Main Street. Comfortable, quite room. Good breakfast, very friendly, helpful staff.
- Grahame (10/5): Wonderful place to stay in Luang Prabang - This hotel is wonderful - it has a perfect location on the Nam Khan river in the quiet part of town.
The staff were terrific and made us feel so welcome to be staying at their hotel.
We has a large balcony room on the upstairs floor with a beautiful view - the bathroom was clean and had everything you need.
The bed was very comfortable.
Breakfast was fresh fruit and a choice of a cooked option - eggs, pancake etc - with French bread and jam.
There is a very well stocked wine cellar and a bar open until 10pm.
There isn't a restaurant for lunch or dinner but there are two of the best restaurants in Luang Prabang next door (Tamarind) and next to next door (Coconut Tree).
The alms giving to monks happens in the next street each morning and is a one minute walk away.
The staff will arrange any transport or day trips as required. Everything was great.
- Stephen (7/5): We love this hotel it’s always a pleasure. - The hotel is opposite the river and close to all the sights and restaurants. It has wonderful staff that can arrange anything you ask for with a smile. The owner introduced himself to us and was genuinely interested in our conversation. It has that certain charm. The bed was a bit lumpy and the pillows were far to soft. The breakfast has no real Vegan / Vegetarian options.
- Richard (9/5): Elegant and comfortable. - Elegant, comfortable, perfect position. Astonishingly good wine list and a perfect balcony on which to drink a glass.
- GREGORY (10/5): - The perfect location. And Zurich Bread is right around the corner!
- Peter (10/5): Exceptional - Great location in the quieter end of the peninsula but close by to some very good restaurants.
The staff are extremely helpful and obliging. Peaceful breakfast on the terrace looking out at the river - best way to start the day!
- Jonathan (9/5): Superb -
- Graham (6/5): - Standard standard
- Mathew (10/5): - Great services overall. Close to restaurants and historical sites etc. I higbly recommended for anyone. Price kind of high but worthy to be close to the Nan Khan River
- Marie (10/5): Exceptional - Friendly staff. Excellent service, great breakfast.
- Frank-joachim (9/5): Very nice place to be, in the heart of Luang Prabang. Very friendly and supportive staff! - In the center of Luang Prabang Rooms and bath rooms require a little bit upgrade
- Richard (10/5): Luang Prabang in its traditional charm. - The lovely Apsara is open again.
it’s so good to see that old traditional businesses are doing well after hard 2 years. The fine dining restaurant is not open yet in evenings ( it’s November 22) but provides lovely breakfast.
- Terrence (10/5): Nice boutique hotel - A beautiful hotel in a renovated older building. If you want to enjoy historic architecture this is the hotel for you. If you want modern then no. Delicious breakfast, friendly staff, and great location.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Elegant, clean, colorful colonial-inspired rooms with balcony overlooking a tranquil green river. Friendly staff, great location a street removed from the hustle and bustle.
- Verified traveler (2/5): - Great location, beautiful decor, friendly and helpful staff, especially Christopher, the manager.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Great position, close to centre of town and good breakfast
- Scot (10/5): Great accommodation in Luang Prabang - My second time to Luang Prabang and so I knew about where I wanted to stay. The Apsara met my needs splendidly. The staff were very friendly and helpful, the room was spacious, bed comfortable and there was a good selection of pillows. It wasn’t particularly noisy even at street level. Breakfast was very good. WiFi and a/c worked well.
- Siddique (8/5): All good except noises from restaurant next door - Stayed in room 1 which was on the second floor. Everything was good and as expected, except at night as it’s closest to the next door restaurant which is very popular, the noises from the restaurant would not die down until after 11pm.
- Andreea (10/5): Excellent hotel on the river - The hotel is located right on the water. It is very clean, safe and well priced. The service was excellent.
- Alan (10/5): The perfect hotel for a stay in Luang Prabang - Really glad we picked this hotel for our stay in Luang Prabang. Initially wondered why there was no TV in the room, but soon realised that the last thing you need when on holiday in Luang Prabang is a television, enjoying the relaxing peaceful lifestyle is the important thing. The Apsara is located close to the bank of the Nam Khan river, with only a small quiet road in between. We initially had a problem with a leaking air conditioner, but this was fixed immediately whilst we were out for the day and the manager personally apologised for the inconvenience. All the staff were extremely helpful and friendly giving plenty of advice on what to see and do locally. We only had breakfast in the hotel, which was excellent. Will stay here again if back in Luang Prabang.
- Carol (10/5): - The staff, facilities, location and value for money at the Apsara hotel were excellent.
- Roy (10/5): Great place - Nice place friendly staff most comfortable bed I had in all of Asia
- Molly (8/5): Great location - Really great location. The restaurants near the hotel were great. The room was a bit noisy, but other than that it was a great bargain for the price. We even used the bikes to travel around one day!
- Carolyn (10/5): An enjoyable return - Stayed at The Apsara several times between 2003 and 2010, when living in Bangkok. Had not been recently, since moving back to UK, but on this visit it felt as if I had never been away and I loved being back. The location is perfect, within easy walking distance of everything, yet on a quiet road with lovely river views. The room was spacious, the bed was comfortable, the decor felt very ' Lao' and there was a huge bathroom, with a good selection of toiletries. Everything was spotlessly clean.
There is an attractive lobby/ bar/restaurant, with beautiful coloured lanterns hanging from the ceiling. There is also a nice terrace on which to enjoy a leisurely breakfast or dinner. The food is excellent -- a great dinner menu and lovely French style breakfasts (warm baguettes/ home-made jams), plus a wide range of cooked options).
The staff are warm, friendly and welcoming. Everything is done to make you feel relaxed and looked after. A lovely place in which to stay -- I would recommend it wholeheartedly.
- Verified traveler (4/5): 1 night stay, can’t recommend. - Location is great, but rooms were awkwardly located on the street. Doors didn’t seem to properly close(they were not sealed) or lock(dead bolt was useless) and it was the only time on my week in Laos I got bug bites-7 to be exact. The air conditioning unit did not work well which didn’t help-bug repellent plug ins should be standard in the rooms. In contrast, breakfast was good, the bed was comfortable and the bathroom was very large.
- Val (10/5): Expensive but wonderful - Great location overlooking the river and near everything. The breakfast was included and excellent. Other meals there were top rate. The staff was very friendly and accommodating.. The owner is an ex-pat from England who was fun to talk with.
