Guest Reviews
- Russell (8/5): Great value for money, good meals and staff. Large car park which I was happy to “hide” my work van in. Lovely area. - Really nice cosy country pub, great staff. First room I got wasn’t great for a tall person - but no fault of the hotel. Second night I had the room titled Samantha, which was much better!
- Nicole (8/5): -
- Mark Cannan (8/5): Wiltshire stopover - Good breakfast, plenty of parking and good meal
In the pub the previous night. My room looked out over the main road and with single glazed windows it was a little noisy from about 0630.
- Gerald (10/5): -
- ANGELA (10/5): - Very comfortable and spacious room. Lovely breakfast and large car park so easy to park.
Friendly, helpful staff.
- Paul (9/5): -
- David (10/5): -
- Patricia (9/5): A very comfortable and enjoyable stay - We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here, being part of a group attending a wedding party nearby. The staff were very friendly and helpful, the rooms were very clean and comfortable (lovely bedlinen!) and the breakfast was excellent. We liked everything
- Luca (7/5): -
- John (10/5): Great stay had everything - Central
- Stephen (9/5): - The room was very clean and the place had great character. The breakfast was very tasty. The room was small and the bathroom door couldn't open fully as it hit the bed. There was no easy chair to relax in nor a desk to work at. I arrived on Sunday afternoon and the pub closed at 6 pm so no food was also available that night.
- Peter (4/5): - The room was satisfactory No toiletries we provided. Breakfast was very poor.one slice of bacon ,one sausage, half a tomato and one slice of toast. I don't eat egg.we had to ask for some jam which turned up on a small dish. Where wes no offer of more toast tea etc. The evening meal
- Lorraine (8/5): It was nice. - It had a good feel about it. It was a nice pub. Nothing to dislike
- Donna-Mae (8/5): -
- Eileen Lucy (9/5): Convenient for Bath. Lovely spacious apartment. - Lovely design. Clean and spacious. Near enough to Bath. Nothing.
- Richard (7/5): Would not rush back - Breakfast was nice but not a lot of choice.
Lovely lady serving breakfast. Staff at check in made us feel most unwelcome.
Did not feel safe as there was a lot of shouting outside when we were trying to sleep.
- Alessandro (8/5): - camera accogliente e letto comodo - colazione nel pub molto piacevole la camera é in una dependance difianco alla cucina di una pizzeria che per fortuna non è aperta tutti i giorni
- Chris (9/5): Very nice place in a very nice village. - Breakfast was very good, dinner was excellent, lovely vibe in the pub, real community feel. Bedroom was a good size and comfortable. Staff were really friendly. Nothing I can think of, particularly. The pint of Tribute I had wasn't very good, but there were better beers available.
- d8bb9e9d927f70f677c9e7101e16f2ed (9/5): Lovely place to stay, food was great and I would highly recommend the Tollgate. - Clean and a friendly welcome. Staff were very helpful. The room was beautiful and the bed comfortable. I was on the front and there was a ‘main’ road which became quite noisy from quite early in the morning.

- 5fc8383b7f74717e295cd463068ed033 (6/5): Lovely staff and good breakfast. Disappointing accommodation - Excellent staff and great breakfast. Pizza barn pizzas were very good and more reasonable than the pub menu. We arrived to the room next to the pizza barn. The heating hadnt been on and the room was freezing. We managed to put the heating on but it wasn’t welcoming. The double bed was twin beds pushed together resulting in me waking with a bad back. We were moved to a different room the following night which was better - nice and clean. Comfy bed but noisy due to the air dryer in the pub toilet below until the pub closed.
- Johannes (8/5): - God gröt med flytande honung.
- Alan (8/5): Unfortunately the staff seemed disinterested in engaging with us. - Location Comfortable large double bed.
The interior of the room was clean but a rather bland interior breakfast was disappointing.
- Rosanna (8/5): Lovely Place To Stay . - Comfy ,clean room . Nice decor . Staff were good, very accommodating. Nowhere to put our toiletries in the bathroom . And the blinds didn't shut the light out completely.
- Peter (10/5): -
- Gomes (6/5): It was okay, expensive for what it offers. - It was clean and organized. It has a big car park. The staff was nice Bed was uncomfortable.
Shower was very small.
The ceiling was inclined so standing walking space was actually very limited in the bedroom, even for us, average to short people.
Not the inn's fault but there were other people staying at the inn talking loudly close to midnight, felt almost like they were in the room with us.
Did not try breakfast, to note that it was just an hour timeframe.
Didn't dine in, it was also expensive for what it offered, ended up going elsewhere.
Overall, way too expensive for what it offers.
- Durance (9/5): Always our first choice when in this area - Stayed here a number of times, aways good. Vey comfortable, with good choice of dishes on the menu. Used by locals and visitors alike. Nothing
- Lisa (8/5): -
- Charlotte (9/5): Beautiful property for a very good price with excellent food, would stay again definitely! - In a very pretty, convenient location. The people were very friendly and accommodating. The food was excellent. The room and bathroom were well maintained and beautiful styled On the whole there wasn’t really any issues. The only nitpicking things are the fridge wasn’t fully cleaned and there was no sound protection between the guest rooms.
- Mark (10/5): Excellent - Lovely refurbished room and very comfy bed. Great food at pub. N/A
- Justin (7/5): - Nice old building and lovely bar and food on offer Due to the age of the property the old windows didn't keep much sound out and being on a busy cross roads it was quite noisy
- Robert (7/5): Very good value for money. -
- Kathryn (10/5): -
- Steven (8/5): Interesting old building which had been modernised well. - Much thought has gone into the design to make the most of the somewhat limited space. The bathroom had a small but good shower and the sink was very compact. Everything worked well. There was no table or equivalent at which I could work with my laptop.
- Rob (10/5): Clean comfortable and friendly inn, a joy to stay at - Just about everything- location, comfort, cleanliness, friendly staff, good food and drink. Pretty much an all/rounder. Nothing that I can think of to be honest.
- Richard (9/5): -
- LindaT (10/5): -
- John (9/5): Pleasant overnight. - Nice country inn, old fashioned but suitably modern. Clean. Nice menu. Parking. Stayed in room across main courtyard which was nice but the blinds weren’t sufficient to keep light out and front door has stained glass window which allows light in so the whole room is lit to with blue light, just needs a couple of curtains.
- Neil (9/5): Very good, will definitely stay here again. - The room was very nice and comfortable, the food was excellent and reasonably priced.
The staff were very friendly and efficient. One rather loud woman at the bar spoiled what was otherwise a lovely experience.
- KAREN (9/5): Fantastic food and staff. Have stayed a few times - Clean, tidy, fab location
- James (10/5): -
- Toby (10/5): -
- Julie (10/5): Lovely place to stay - Very comfortable, cosy, good service and excellent food. Lovely room with everything we needed. No dislikes....except the weather!!
- sandra (7/5): Lovely food and friendly staff - Food was amazing Rooms could have been better
- Asiri (10/5): Would most certainly return and would highly recommend the Tollgate Inn to others without hesitation - From the moment we arrived at the Tollgate Inn, our experience was exceptional. We stayed for a weekend getaway, which coincided with my wife’s birthday. I had asked if they could help make the day special for her, and they truly exceeded our expectations.
The room was spotless, comfortable, and beautifully presented. We enjoyed both dinner and breakfast in the restaurant, and the food was outstanding—high-quality dishes and beverages throughout.
To top it off, they surprised my wife with a birthday cake, which was a lovely and thoughtful gesture.
We would most certainly return and would highly recommend the Tollgate Inn to others without hesitation.
- Kay (8/5): -
- Howard (8/5): A very good break -
- Sebastien (9/5): Exceptional -
- Michael (7/5): Good, but not great value for money - Great shower, towels and bed linen top notch, good breakfast Single glazed so noise from road, room very small, bed just ok
- Robbie (7/5): -
- Greg (8/5): Great location, and Great food. - Good food and breakfast. Barista coffee so all good for me. Good location for Melksham and easy to get to. The only thing I can think of is the bathroom, it was so tiny and the shower was a squeeze but really not sure they can do much about that.
- Robert (7/5): -
- David (8/5): Lovely Place to Stay - Wonderful historic building.
Lovely location in a very nice village.
Super Staff.
Great food. Lovely poached eggs.
Very comfortable bed.
Plenty of beverages/biscuits in the room. Outside steps up to our room were challenging for my Partner. It might be an idea to mention the steps in the Hotel details.
Room was just about warm enough on what was a cold night.
The shower room was very cold. The towel rail wasn't working.
- Bruce (8/5): Great stay! - On our route home
Attractive pub with excellent parking facilities
Very comfortable room and excellent service from the staff.
Good food N/A
- John (10/5): Could not find fault at all . - Good facilities and excellent food with delightful staff It was faultless
- Jackson (7/5): -
- Lin (10/5): -
- Spiers-King (8/5): -
- Tony (9/5): Warm, cosy and welcoming. - Good old fashion pub, with log fire. Great location, easy to park. Good selection of beers, wines and food. Breakfast was perfect.
- anne (10/5): -
- Karen (9/5): -
- H A (9/5): Lovely quality time with family. - Friendly, cosy great food and atmosphere. Shower had no power and actually stopped running 3 times within 5 mins of me trying to shower.
- jack (5/5): -
- Leanne (10/5): Last minute booking of an excellent property - Beautiful rooms, great facilities, lovely comfortable beds and fabulous breakfast Nothing
- Jeremie (8/5): -
- Kathryn (10/5): Great food, fabulous staff, beautiful location - Beautiful property in a stunning location. The staff and service were superb, friendly and super helpful. The food was outstanding, both dinner and breakfast. Our room was very comfortable. Definitely coming back for another visit. Nothing!
- eric (8/5): Ideal location for exploring the local sights with lovely food. - Breakfast and evening meals were very good. Good choices. Nice atmosphere. If you are a light sleeper then avoid rooms at the front of the inn. Could do with somewhere to hang your clothes in the bathroom, a minor problem.
- Anthony (6/5): Slightly disappointed. Only stayed 1 night. - Staff friendly; food good; clean and tidy venue Room noisy with pub customers and traffic.
Awkward moving around the room with sloping ceiling and small bathroom.
Bed could do with a new mattress.
- Matthew (8/5): -
- Dana (10/5): - The friendliest place ever, with a true inn experience, rooms above the pub, small but with an ensuite! Centrally located for trips to Bath, Bradford on Avon, even only 1 hour from Wales. Bed was comfortable, shower was wonderful. Mostly the people made us feel like family, so lovely.
- Michael (8/5): pleasant - Daily housekeeping Breakfast was served too late each day and because of this I was late for work. Judging by the number of guests all arriving for breakfast at 08:00, as I did, I suspect others might have wanted breakfast earlier too.
Because of this influx of other guests at 08:00, we all had to wait too long.
- Ron (10/5): Great location for Laycock & Bath. - We were a party of four and were made to feel very welcome by all the staff we met over our two night stay. Restaurant very good and excellent breakfast. Rooms very clean and comfortable. Will definitely stay again if looking for accommodation in that area.
- Parsons (8/5): good would recommend - Tollgate was lovely. We had dinner n the evening which was great and a really lovely breakfast only downside was the noise of the hand dryers in the toilets
- Jane (8/5): Pleasant stay - Good breakfast , nice location and friendly staff Small room , and small shower area
- Dariia (10/5): - Nice and cosy room, the bar which serves food and drinks but also the pizza place opposite. N/A
- Francis (10/5): Fabulous stay for a short getaway - All the staff were exceptionally friendly, especially in the morning, as we sat outside the gentleman was very happy to come out to us even though it was wet and slippy. The fried breakfast was one of the best we’ve had, and the pizza the night before was brilliant! Again one of the best we’ve had, and the young man working was very polite and kind. Nothing it was great!
- Laura (8/5): Perfect location for village wedding - Comfy bed, lovely pub. Breakfast was delicious. Friendly staff Fridge in room was loud
- Sean (10/5): Great and relaxing - Great place to stay. Really friendly.
- Stephane (10/5): - Excellent dejeuner. Nous avons egalement souper au resto le soir. Tres bien sur tout.

- christopher (9/5): A lovely stay ,great location .food and staff - Brilliant friendly staff, great value and great food Our room was quite compact, but so am I so no problem
- Hilary (8/5): - Breakfast was good. Some fresh fruit would have been nice. Location excellent Room access and different levels a little awkward
- Alpesh (10/5): -
- Leonard (10/5): Weekend away. - Nice big room lovey and clean, lovely food good beer and wine. Lovey outside seating, all staff brilliant.
We will be back.
- Jaskinder (10/5): - Stayed in the cottage which was a good surprise. Had a self containing kitchen & outside space to enjoy . Food was excellent although had uk wait a few while
- Dario (8/5): -
- Alec (9/5): - Good evening meal and breakfast. Friendly and clean. Comfortable.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Great place work amazing food and a very comfy bed - Lovely food. Some of the best ever. The burger was to die for. Slightly chaotic with all the dogs barking causing havoc and shame couldn’t eat outside as there was a funeral on and loads of people from the wake seemed to have priority. Missed breakfast out of my own fault but lady made me up a bacon roll after checking with a chef.
- Sean (10/5): Excellent - Everything. The place is lovely. Very quiet. The room was absolutely amazing. Nice breakfast as well. Will definitely be returning very soon Nothing everything was mint.
- Reevy (9/5): -
- Juliet (9/5): - Very helpful and friendly staff. Lovely breakfast and comfortable room.
- Laru69 (8/5): - Ottima posizione Stanza un po' piccola senza condizionatore
- Anne (9/5): Lovely pub in a delightful village, and good value. - Breakfast was a bit disappointing. Would have appreciated some fresh fruit, maybe a croissant …
- Michelle (10/5): Excellent stay - Location, staff friendly and helpful. Atmosphere really good. Room was really warm but it was a sunny day when we arrived
- Mehreen (9/5): Superb -
- David (7/5): Tollgate Inn convenient location for Cumberwell Golf Club but accommodation was nothing special - Location of the Tollgate Inn was good as I was visiting Cumberwell Golf & Country Club the following day which is only 10 mins down the road. Food in the restaurant was good although genuinely felt that a cold chicken caesar salad at £19.00 was a bit expensive. Fruit crumble with ice cream for dessert was delicious and generous portion. Price of some main meals was expensive. Having asked for the bill and the waitress saying she would come back and having to wait 10 to 15 mins and then needing to go to the bar to ask to pay my bill again was a little frustrating after a two hour drive. Names on bedroom doors were virtually illegible and added nothing to the character of the rooms whatsoever - remove ASAP ! I was surprised to learn that breakfast was served until 8.00am which is late for a weekday especially for business people. I needed to be at the golf club by 7.45am so missed breakfast although I paid £99.00 for the room including full English Breakfast.
- Herron (10/5): Everything we hoped and more - Everything was above and beyond what we expected. Location, the vibe and the food were perfect. The staff are very good and so nice. Nothing
- Jacquelyn (10/5): - The food and service was excellent. We will be back!
- Barry (8/5): Very good -
