Guest Reviews
- Tina (10/5): Excellent place to totally unwind & soak in the beauty of the area. - This is a lovely bed and breakfast. The room we had was beautifully decorated with picturesque views. It was well stocked with the items you may need during your stay. The owner was informative and offering advice on local walks. Breakfast was substantial, great quality and locally sourced.
We were initially nervous to drive up such a steep hill to the house but the views and house were well worth it and exceeds our expectations. A steep hill… but taxis are very cheap if going out.
- Litchfield (10/5): - We had a great stay. Had lovely chats with the owners and were well looked after Nothing
- Sherburne (10/5): - Lovely clean rooms and amazing breakfast! Great location!
- Michael (10/5): Both the facilities and the owners were great - It was the best places that we have been to Nothing
- Justine Rixon (10/5): Really beautiful location that feels like home... Wonderful hosts that treat you like family xx - The view from the top of the hill was outstanding. The breakfast was so yummy and we were even treated to chocolate cake on arrival and BBQ with the owners and their family which was really tasty. This place is just brilliant, there is great parking, it is far enough from the town to be really peaceful but close enough for quick access. Nothing at all... I will say though it is up a VERY steep lane so people should be aware of this before they go and not leave reduced feedback for the owners, as it states that clearly on the website. It is not fare to them to receive lower ratings because of the location as in my opinion the view makes up for the climb.
- Toni (10/5): - My son and daughter in law went for weekend for a mini moon they have been a couple of times before and love this place. They say it's home from home and the owners are amazing 👏 Nothing
- Lucy (8/5): Beautiful house, very noisy - The whole house was beautifully decorated. It's in a lovely position up a hill, with and incredible view from the patio. The owner couldn't have been more friendly, helpful or accommodating, she was lovely. The breakfast was very good, the bed was really comfortable and the shower was wonderful. Our room was quite small and at the back of the house so it was a bit dark. Our main complaint was how noisy the house is. We could hear everything from our neighbour's room including what they were doing in the bathroom! Fortunately everyone staying at the same time as us were early birds and in bed at the same time as us. Otherwise it would have been a really difficult few nights.
- Marina (9/5): Stunning - It is a very beautiful property at the top of a steep hill which rewards you with a beautiful view. We could see the Heights of Abraham from our bedroom window.
The hosts are very helpful with advice about the local area.
The suite was wonderful, with a small fridge (fresh milk provided), a large bathroom and lounge area.
The breakfast was top quality, we had cooked breakfast both days and also some fresh fruit, yoghurt and pastries. All locally supplied.
Perfect location for Matlock Bath, Bakewell and the Dales. I really dont want to say anything negative as we had a very positive experience but the one thing I would say is that the bathroom floor was freezing so you will definitely need slippers.
- Lisa (8/5): - Breakfast was superb !
Loved the location, quite steep uphill but this wasn’t a problem for my husband and I. Sue and John were amazing hosts. The place was spotlessly clean. I loved the personal touch!
- Paul (10/5): The B&B was excellent, The owners were brilliant, couldn't do enough for us. - The owners were excellent, they could not do enough for us from the moment we arrived until we left. The breakfast was excellent. We would recommend this B&B to anyone, you will not be disappointed. Nothing.
- Christopher (10/5): - Fantastic location, room, breakfast and hosts
- Alison (9/5): The facilities were more than adequate and the hosts couldn’t do enough for us. - The location was beautiful and picturesque.
The breakfast was brilliant, lots of choice including a lovely fresh fruit platter with natural yogurt.
The bed was really comfortable and we had the best nights sleep.
The hosts were really friendly and were always available if you needed anything. We were happy with everything.
- Ali (10/5): Hidden little gem up a steep road but worth it once you get there! - Friendly and accommodating hosts. Fresh milk and superb breakfast. Lovely roll top bath. Brilliant view from the bedroom. Nothing
- William (10/5): - Great place to stay Perfect place only small walk to matlock and matlock baths.
- Gary (10/5): Would recommend to anyone owners very friendly Would return without any hesitation - Highly recommend would certainly return owners very friendly and polite exceptional clean and tidy Absolutely nothing
- Joanne (9/5): Great value for money with excellent views - The location, views, host, room was spectacular and above expectations. Loved the little details with the toiletries, layout if breakfast, dressing gowns, pot of tea. Everything was really good. I would recommend.

- Lee (9/5): - Very friendly hosts and the property was in a great location. Freshly cooked breakfast using local quality ingredients
Would recommend.
- Richard (10/5): Very comfortable and welcoming stay - Very hearty breakfast and flexible to requests.
Beautiful and spacious suite.
Very good quality bedding and towels Bedside lights hanging from ceiling were a little low as both my wife and I regularly hit our heads on the shades.
Road approaching is quite challenging - steep uphills and very tight corners
- kevin (10/5): -
- Mason (10/5): Had an amazing stay thank you very much! - Room was lovely with an amazing view and great facilities. Breakfast was nice with exceptional service and advice on walks in the area.
- Shona (10/5): A great place to stay. The room was lovely, food was great and a very big warm welcome. I’ll come back again - The room was lovely, well decorated, and the bed was really comfortable and the views are amazing Nothing
- Maria (10/5): Wonderful - Hosts were so lovely and helpful. N/a
- Haywood (10/5): Highly recommend - Sue & John were very friendly & helpful, the breakfast was delicious, the view across the valley to the Heights of Abraham is marvellous and a great deal of thought & effort has been put into making the Gables a great B&B. It's a great place to use as a base for exploring the surrounding area, including the Peak District Nothing
- Linda (10/5): - Lovely place and views over Matlock Bath amazing
Hosts wonderful. Breakfast 5*
- Jane (10/5): A beautiful little gem - Warm , welcoming, cosy , friendly. Super breakfast. There is nothing to dislike. It’s an excellent place to stay.
- Daiana (10/5): Wonderful view, nice bed and cosy.Lovely lady at the hotel receiving us late in the evening. - Breakfast was excellent with a choice of drink The steep road was a bit hard to drive on and reach the location
But my husband managed it to take us up there
- Travis (9/5): Brilliant sta, - The staff were so helpful and kind and could not do anything more for you. The food was amazing and such good quality for the price. Excellent location for us as we like to be out of the hustle. At times we did find that the room would be cold.
- Jennifer (10/5): - More heating in the bedroom
- Tony (10/5): Comfortable cosy place - The breakfast was lovely. For those who did not want a full English, other options were available Nothing
- Viv Trev (9/5): Super - Everything Nothing
- Barry (10/5): -
- Russell (10/5): -
- Withers (10/5): Fantastic, absolutely loved it, highly recommended, Thank you👍 - Modern, clean, professional, lovely hosts, plenty of towels, very tasty breakfast included in the price👍 we got a great view of the fireworks from the eliminations from the balcony, and the little helpers kept us entertained as well🫶 Not a lot🤷♂️ Room was small, but the bed was huge and comfortable😆 a couple with lots of luggage might struggle, but I’m guessing bigger rooms are available, I dislike fixed shower heads, but otherwise the shower was great👍 that’s it
- Gemma (10/5): -
- Johnson (10/5): -
- Judith (10/5): -
- simon (10/5): -
- Adrian (10/5): Very good value and a pleasure to stay there. - Great location near Matlock. The hilly roads were a bit challenging but dont be put off by that. First class guest house, the room was excellent and all facilities are of a very high standard. Breakfast was excellent.
Sue and John made us welcome and nothing was too much trouble. Car parking was ample but a little difficult, but car was safe at all times.
- Jacquie (10/5): The Gables - We were warmly welcomed and had super cooked breakfasts each day with a lovely fruit platter.. I found the bed and bedding very comfortable
We utilised their 6 mile walk map from the B&B which took us through some fabulous views. (The lounge area's view is directly opposite the Heights of Abraham cable cars).
It would be possible to walk into Matlock, but we were lazy and took the car! For some people, the hill the B&B is on might not be attractive, but it was no problem for us
- Richard (9/5): -
- Caroline (9/5): Enjoyable stay with my mum. - Comfortable room, lovely views, great hosts and wonderful breakfast. The actual location of the property was up a very steep hill which would put me off going again, even though the B and B was lovely.
- Jo (9/5): - Lovely location, bed and bathroom were lovely. Breakfast was fab and hosts lovely. Probably hard due to location but wifi wasn't great so couldn't watch netflix on the tv in the room. Couldn't connect to the wifi either account.
- Rachel (10/5): -
- Karl (10/5): Nothing not to like! Can’t recommend enough. - The property was clean, brilliantly presented and everybody was so welcoming. We had a nice space to park our motorbikes, the location is superb (including the view of Matlock), and it was perfect for our short stay. Would not hesitate to recommend to anyone.
- Ian (10/5): - Was made to feel extremely welcome by Sue. Johns breakfasts were delicious 😋 There was nothing not to like
- James (8/5): Good location with views - Breakfast and support by owner Info on approaching lane
- Amanda (9/5): Thoroughly enjoyed stay - will come again - Great
- Gaz6649 (10/5): Birthday Treat - Fantastic location with spectacular views. The breakfast was superb with just the right amount and all of excellent quality.
Sue and John were outstanding hosts who were friendly and helpful without been intrusive. Not a problem but be aware that the property is on a very steep hill.
- Michael (8/5): - Room , owners welcoming and accommodating. Happy to offer advice about local attractions. Breakfast was up amongst the best tasted at B&B's. Quiet and peaceful. Position of accommodation makes it a must for a car as walk up hill is very steep. We chose to leave car on this occasion as description describes walk as couple of minutes, which it is not. I'm fit and would not use this accommodation again without use of a car.
- jennyp (10/5): Great stay - The location, very quiet and peaceful, attention to detail, breakfast was great, good choice given, Cromford 6 mile walk at the doorstep for anyone who likes walking, free taxi service to Indian restaurant pick up and drop off Walls paper thin could hear other people talk loud in their room and making a noise, other than that it was absolutely amazing.
- Linda (10/5): Lovely B&B - Lovely B&B. Clean, spacious and quiet. Breakfast was really good.
Close to Matlock by foot. However, it’s quite on a hill. So not so practical for people with mobility issues.
- Mishal (10/5): - Brilliant experience. Welcoming and warm hosts.
- Rebecca (10/5): - It was clean and really pretty
- Ray (10/5): Great getaway location. - Great location on the outskirts of Matlock. Run by Sue and John who are excellent hosts. Breakfast very good and rooms comfortable. A pleasant lounge with stunning views. Car parking fine.
The site is located on a very steep hill, which wasn't any problem to us, in fact it added to the entertainment. However it may impact on guests with mobility issues.
It's a very quiet location which makes the stay very relaxing. No major issues. WFI a bit on the slow side maybe.
- Paul (10/5): Short break at the Gables B&B - Spotlessly clean, comfortable bed, excellent breakfast and very helpful owners. Nothing.
- Louise (10/5): Wonderful place to stay and explore Matlock - Gorgeous room, comfortable bed and lovely seating area. Plentiful breakfast with lots of choice and hosts were very chatty and knowledgable of the local area. Views were breathtaking Very steep hilly location…need to get a taxi back each day
- Philip (8/5): Recommend this b and b we had a lovely two night stay. - Friendly hosts, impeccably clean facilities.
Very Comfortable bed. Breakfast superb.
Summertime stay with lovely views from Derwent Suite and patio. Guest lounge area with lots of books and brochures. Mini fridge in room is excellent. Great. Some noise breakthrough from room above.
Have to run hot tap few minutes to heat up.
- Debby (9/5): Superb -
- Mariela (10/5): Loved our stay - Breakfast was amazing. The garden and outdoor seating with a view were beautiful. Sue and her husband are a pleasure and even made us a wonderful breakfast earlier than usual. We wanted to stay longer and hope to go back. The bathrobes were an extra measure of luxury. Loved it! It was a little warm and could use a fan or air-conditioning in the upper back room. We went in the summer so this probably isn't a probably most of the year.
- Roger (9/5): Hard to fault. Really enjoyed our stay. -
- Glen (10/5): Exceptional - We liked everything. A warm welcome from Sue, plus tea and cake on the patio, with absolutely stunning views. Our room was clean and comfortable, bonus of a fridge stocked with water and milk. We didn't have a valley view from our room, but the weather was lovely, so we could sit out and enjoy it! Breakfast was hearts and delicious, cooked by Jon, and served by Sue. Would highly recommend, just note a steep drive up to The Gables, but well worth!
- Andrew (10/5): Lovely, comfortable accommodation in a quiet peaceful location - Great, friendly helpful hosts Sue and John.
Excellent accommodation, comfortable in a quiet location. Nice extras like fresh milk and big bonus having a fridge in the room. Very good gluten free breakfast, perfect for me being a Coeliac.
Lovely views across the valley. Everything good.
- Cheryl (8/5): Perfect B&B with lovely owners - The owners were lovely, welcoming and had thought of absolutely everything guests might need during their stay…nothing was too much trouble. Room was quiet, clean and loved the fridge given the hot weather. Location is 20minute walk into both Matlock and Cromford. But location is very hilly for both walking and driving with no local shops.
- Rachael (10/5): Exceptional -
- Elaine (9/5): Superb - Nice quiet location, had a back garden view. Breakfast was lovely and piping hot.
- Sarah (9/5): Superb - The bedroom & bathroom were cleverly and attractively furnished. Beds and bedding were really comfy. Service was excellent, as was the delicious breakfast. The guesthouse was peaceful and in a beautiful, quiet location. A little short of floor space in the bedroom to put our suitcases.
- Andrew (10/5): Lovely comfortable B &B with beautiful views - Sue and John helpful friendly hosts
Great location, lovely views.
Comfortable accommodation, quiet room, good nights sleep. Delicious gluten free breakfasts.
Returning soon. Everything good
- Nicola (9/5): Superb - Beautiful house in a great area. The grounds are so nice, when we stayed the weather could have been better. Breakfast was cooked to perfection
- Caroline (9/5): A delightful Guest House run by a very caring and thoughtful couple.coupleouple - The breakfast was delicious with plenty of choice. I have a handicap and the host very kindly cut my bacon up for me. The bed was lovely and comfortable. I was most impressed when I asked my host for information about taxis to take me to the station on my last morning and he said not to worry about it, someone would run me down. I also really appreciated the bottles of lovely cold water in the fridge. I would definitely recommend The Gables Guest House.
Thank you very much for a lovely stay Nothing
- Julie (10/5): Exceptional - Fabulous hosts. Amazing breakfast. A great base for exploring some of the wonderful sights in Matlock. Nothing!
- Samantha (10/5): The Gables - Little gem - The Gables is such a lovely place. From walking through the front door, the hosts make you feel at home. The little touches like remembering our breakfast order & drinks on the second day & the breakfast was beautiful. We enquired about other rooms & we were shown round every room. This place is a little gem, along with the staff & I wouldn't hesitate recommending & would definitely return. Nothing at all to fault, a brilliant & relaxing few days away which is what we wanted. Nothing to fault at all. We wished we could have have stayed longer.
- Mitch (9/5): Cozy and comfortable - Highly recommended. This is the best night of sleep we've had away from home that I can remember. They were also very accommodating with a vegetarian breakfast for us both, which was also delicious. It is also very well positioned to explore Matlock and the surrounding area. I have already recommended to family visiting the area. In no way a compliant, but be aware the drive up is quite steep and a little bit twisty. Well worth it though.
- Susan (9/5): Clearly lots of thought has gone into ensuring guests had everything they needed. - Very good choice of food. Our room was fantastic you had everything lots of lovely thoughtful details. The steep winding road was a tad concerning.
- Carl (10/5): Exceptional -
- Barbara (10/5): Exceptional -
- Darren (10/5): Exceptional - Amazing location, wonderful hosts and lovely clean and comfortable room Can't fault the place but the location is not for new drivers!!
- Loapolon (9/5): Superb -
- Sarah (9/5): Fabulous bed & breakfast, but unfortunately not in a ideal location. - Sue & her husband were great hosts & extremely helpful. It's a beautiful bed and breakfast, with lovely facilities inside the building (plenty of room tea & coffee, a fridge with fresh milk & chilled water). Breakfast was delicious with plenty of everything. The Gables is in an awkward location - this can be overcome by arriving from one direction & leaving going downhill on a very winding, steep road with blind bends. Not ideal.
- Nicola (10/5): Exceptional - Stunning BB with the most beautiful gardens and views.
Lovely breakfast.
Kind hosts :) Nothing, even loved the hill
- Jodie (10/5): Exceptional - The beds were so comfy. It's was the most enjoyable nights sleep I've ever had staying somewhere.
It was clean, and there was complimentary tea, hot chocolate, and coffee making facilities in the room.
Amazing views and lovely staff.
- A (10/5): Very nice 2 day break - Lovely quiet location with some great walks into matlock bath and matlock, Nice varied and hassle free breakfast
Well looked after by the hosts All good
- Kayleigh (10/5): Wonderful hosts beautiful location delicious breakfast - Wonderful friendly and attentive hosts, sue who is front of house cannot do enough for you from providing advice and directions on how to make the most out of your stay. Beautiful cosy rooms, fully equipped with teas coffees biscuits water and milk. Delicious breakfast cooked to order (with amazing poached eggs and fresh fruit platters) in a beautiful location with breath taking views - what more could you ask for. We will definitely be back. (Nothing to write here)
- Louise (10/5): 10/10 stay - Welcoming hosts, lovely views and a clean room. We had a great breakfast with lots of options. Great attention to details and an overall perfect stay.
- Sonia (9/5): Superb - Comfy bed. Excellent breakfast. Hosts very friendly. Was a little cool in room. Until heating came on.
- Ramona (10/5): Beautiful romantic escape - Absolutely gorgeous view from our window, food was amazing. Hosts are friendly, willing to help at any time. Easy access into town but most importantly, it was quiet. We don't like noise at all especially at night or early morning. I wish we stayed more than 2 nights
- Janet (10/5): Exceptional - Everything breakfast was lovely, friendly hosts, great location, great views Nothing
- Caroline (9/5): Had a wonderful stay at The Gables and would definitely recommend - Location with wonderful views. Very warm welcome and breakfast was excellent with plenty of choice .
- Pamela (10/5): A fabulous B&B - Wow, what a lovely place. The accommodation is perfect, our hosts were very welcoming, and nothing was too much trouble. As soon as we arrived we were offered a drink. The breakfasts were stunning. All ingredients were locally sourced. Our room was very comfortable and very clean. The views from the property were stunning. We have no hesitation in recommending this wonderful B&B. Thank you Sue and John, for a fabulous stay.
- Stephanie (10/5): Exceptional -
- Bethany (10/5): A quite get away - There’s was nothing to dislike, the room was lovely and it was clean, no noise and it was lovely and quite. It was a really cosy stay and a beautiful location with a lovely view when you step outside and whilst having breakfast.
- Deborah (10/5): The B &B made our stay a perfect stay, we loved everything - The breakfast was a full English and was amazing, everything you would expect with white and brown toast...very substantial and filled us up ready for the day ahead. The view from our room was breathtaking and the room itself was huge with a beautiful large bathroom with bath and walk in shower, everything you need including fresh milk in the fridge and bottles of water, absolutely 10 out of 10 Absolutely nothing could be better, our stay was perfect
- Julia (10/5): Exceptional -
- Derek (8/5): Top of the mountain - Unfortunately the position of the property was at the top of a steep hill ,Sue and John were great hosts and very friendly Unfortunately due to the properties location we wouldn't return Had fantastic views.
- Richard (10/5): Exceptional -
- Julie (10/5): Exceptional - Lovely comfortable friendly home, food was excellent, very welcoming as soon as you step through the door. Very steep but worth it for the views, you get round working with the steepnest.
- Sharon (10/5): Superb - Everything was perfect Nothing
