Guest Reviews
- Sarah (10/5): -
- Carolyn (8/5): Comfortable, great food and fantastic team of staff who are so very helpful and friendly. Cannot fault them. - Relaxed and comfortable property with all you need for a comfy break. It’s an old property and some features are expectedly quirky which adds to the character. Nothing that the fantastic hotel management cannot remedy for one when asked.
- Mel (9/5): - Staff were absolutely lovely
- Valerie (9/5): - The food was very good and the ambiance in the bar and restaurant very pleasant. The staff were excellent. There was some traffic noise at night.
- Charise (9/5): Lovely welcoming staff - Very lovely staff lovely restaurant Left tap sounds may have airlock in although nothing to worry about sink
- Sarah (8/5): -
- Russell (10/5): Simply fantastic - Everything.!!.
The place, the rooms, the staff and the food..
All fantastic.. Nothing
- Alan (9/5): -
- Keta (9/5): - Food and service.
Clean and good decor. Road noise and hot tap was slow to run hot.
- Mary (7/5): - Stayed there before and has always been good We only had one towel in the bathroom and one saucer. Lots of fluff on the carpet so not convinced it had been hoovered. The bathroom door doesnt close. So a bit disappointed. Although normally very good.
- Helen (10/5): Really lovely, comfortable stay. - A really lovely welcome and an offer to help with my bags. Super comfy room, lovely and warm. The beds are amazing! So nice to have bottles of water, biscuits and plenty of tea bags - its very relaxing! If I had to nit pick at something I would say the hot water tap is slow to warm up but that is me clutching at straws here. There really is nothing to moan about. I've stayed a few times now and will come back.
- Vincent (8/5): -
- Bradley (9/5): -
- Michael (8/5): I would stay again if in the area - Excellent Dinner Access to the bedrooms
- Andy (8/5): We enjoyed our stay here and would definitely book to stay again . - The location for us was perfect as we have family in Tiptree and this is just a stones throw away from there. It was very clean and there is plenty of parking on the opposite side of the road. The room was clean and spacious. And the staff were very friendly and helpful. The only downside was the room we had was on the side of the road so obviously some noise but not too bad although we stayed on a Saturday night so if this was a midweek stay it may have been quite a bit more noisy?
- Christian (9/5): Lovely staff. Nice place, great food - Lovely staff and a nice place to stay. Food is always exceptional. Nothing major to note.
The only issue was a broken section of the bed in room-4, which was causing a dip in the mattress.
I reported it to a member of staff the followingmorning, so hopefully it has been resolved before my next stay.
- Kundan (10/5): -
- Ross miller (5/5): - Breakfast was good Electric shower in room was very poor
- Deborah (8/5): - Great value breakfast Password for the WiFi in the room
- Katrina (10/5): Best Christmas meal and stay - The staff were very helpful, and the service was excellent. The Christmas menu was excellent. And the price of the room was very good. There was nothing I did not like.
- Mark (9/5): -
- Tina (10/5): Excellent would definately stay again! - Everything, great service and room was beautiful! Loved everything
- Samson (9/5): Very good - It was a lovely little room in a nice pub. Very reasonably priced with plenty of parking.
- Andrew (8/5): Satisfied with a clean and well appointed room but just a bit noisy - Friendly staff when we arrived and were shown to our room Rather thin walls meant we were awake due to noisy party in next door room for a short time
- Steven (10/5): -
- Raymond (10/5): Great place to stay - Staff were friendly and helpful. Our room was clean and comfortable. We had dinner here, which was really good. Nothing
- Alex (8/5): All lovely except one thing - The food was great Everything was fantastic except the barman with the ponytail, rude, he didn't think I saw the faces he pulled behind my back. Probably not cut out for work in hospitality
- Michael (10/5): Lovely pub, bedroom was superb - The room was lovely, nice decor. Didn't have breakfast. Bed was heaven, . Slept well. Music in the bar was too loud, Too noisy.
- stephen (9/5): Good quality restaurant - Excellent food and comfortable restaurant Shower was a little odd and no heating in the bathroom
- Alicia (7/5): Lovely room in great location - small tweaks would make it a wonderful stay - Great location and amazing breakfast available Could hear a lot of noise through the single glazing in the room
- David (8/5): VERY WELCOMING STAFF AND GOOD FOOD - Dinner and breakfast both very good with excellent service
- Jayesh (8/5): nice place to stay for a the night for attending wedding close by - just stayed overnight all good
- Sharon (10/5): Absolutely fabulous! - We stayed one night, our room was upgraded at no charge which we really appreciated. The room was spacious, clean and the bed was very comfy. We had dinner in the restaurant with friends
The food was fabulous, the staff very attentive and friendly. An excellent stay, we will return and absolutely recommend.
- David (10/5): We cannot wait to return - The staff and the stay were exceptional Clean, cosy and perfect
- Sue (10/5): Comfortable Stay - Lovely old hotel, would certainly stay here again. Nothing.
- bryan (6/5): Disappointing stay - Three negatives.
The bathroom had a distinct drain/sewer smell which requires immediate attention.
Only one set of towels provided for two guests.
Our room (and several others) were located very close to a busy very noisy intersection with the result that from 6am sleep was impossible.
This was extremely disappointing as the room rate (no breakfast included) was not inconsiderable.
- Gary (2/5): Very poor. More concerned about grabbing money than providing a nice room. - The staff were very friendly and helpful. My room. It was quite small, with a tiny outdated bathroom. Upon entering the room , I noticed that the windows were open and the bathroom door wedged open, there was damp musty smell. I needed to get some reports sent and was happy to have the windows open with fresh air.
However, the noise from the traffic was quite loud, so I closed the windows, showered and went to dinner. Not particularly good.
When I returned to the room, the musty smell had become an awful stench.
So bad, I had to open all the windows and put up with the traffic noise. Even with the windows open, the smell was quite unbearable.
I stay away 2 or 3 nights most weeks and take the rough with the smooth.
My night was awful, noisy, smelly, small room.
I mentioned the smell to the very pleasant girl at breakfast, who was quite concerned and informed that she had mentioned it to the manager and I would be contacted by them.
I was not contacted.
I am convinced that the staff were aware of the smell, hence leaving the windows open and bathroom door also wedged open.
- Cat (10/5): - Great stay a
- Jokubaityte (10/5): -
- Trowles (5/5): Unpleasant, noisy, and overpriced. - It was convenient but that was all. The food was average nothing more. The room was right next to the road so traffic noise was awful as there is no soundproofing at all. We chose not to stay for breakfast because as well as having to pay for it you have to pay for your tea/coffee too! Outrageous! I've never yet stayed in a hotel anywhere in the world so far where I've had to pay for my coffee at breakfast.
Certainly wouldn't stay there through choice again as very overpriced for what you get, and there are far better hotels a few miles away which offer a far better service and sensible pricing. Plus much better and bigger rooms to.
- Laura (10/5): -
- Glenda (7/5): If the rooms could be cool down it would make the stay entirely different. - Very pleasant nice people The rooms are far too hot.
- Caitrin (10/5): - Very comfortable room with a great pub/restaurant below. Would definitely stay again! Nothing
- angie (9/5): Very helpful - We were at a wedding alday and they let us check in early to get ready. The traffic in the early morning but can’t be helped as the hotel was on a junction.
- Charlotte (7/5): Very welcoming staff , comfy beds overall a good stay - Breakfast was really good as was the service. Staff were all very pleasant and helpful Dissappointed on reading previous revues about rooms being too light and noisy. Curtains needed in front roomsThis could easily be improved at not a great cost but had still not been addressed. Also awful damp and nasty smell in en-suite room 2.it is a shame that so many good points yet they are let down by a few problems that could easily be sorted.
- Karen (8/5): -
- Glenn (9/5): Great place with fabulous service - Lovely building, atmosphere and rooms, and the service was brilliant as was the food. The breakfasts are well worth sampling, no bad choice there. Nothing really, the kitchen fans can be heard in the rear rooms or the road on the front, but these can’t be changed. The room was very hot and the fan very loud, but at least there was a fan.
- Ian (7/5): Good -
- Helen (10/5): Exceptional -
- Kelly (2/5): - Received
- Helen (10/5): Exceptional -
- Suzanne (10/5): Exceptional -
- Deirdre (8/5): Good value and comfortable room, but noisy - Very good value
Pleasant, very helpful staff- kindly let us in before check in time
Comfortable bed
Lovely old characterful building On a very noisy main road (not helped as we had the window open because it was so hot)
No breakfast facilities - we were told in advance, and told of cafes in town
- Linda (8/5): - It is good value. The staff are very welcoming and helpful.
It is clean. Snowy white bedding and big fluffy towels but although offered it was accepted that I preferred not to have unnecessary changes of towels and bedding. It’s great to have a good restaurant on site that also offers several vegetarian options. There is a lovely little garden and good parking. Be prepared to accept that there will be traffic noise as it’s positioned on a junction.
- Charlottec (7/5): Thank - you - Everyone talks about the Blue anchor.. fab place to go for a meal, they have a function room for weddings& meetings.. the girls were lovely and welcoming on arrival, they have public transport I received an email& a 2missed calls from the owner about , the need to pick our luggage up.. which was inconvenient but they were collected, we were nearly overcharged on arrival, the owner tried to charge us for another night aswell.. the owner come across scary, intimidating, short tempered, unwelcoming and anxious to arrive back, the noise from the rd the night before was terrible& the public transport stuck of sweaty annoying kids in the am..
- John (8/5): Value for money would return - Great food and clean stylish room Shower was poor and attachment could catch
- Simon (7/5): overall ok for two nights - just wish we had a different room for the noise from the fans - staff were brilliant. Evening meal excellent with a great menu and fab food. Room 4 very noisy throughout the night as extractor fans from below were right outside our window, so perhaps that room should be cheaper than others. Also the base of the fan was broken so fan unusable on a hot night (when you cant open the windows due to the noise outside)
- Tim (10/5): Exceptional -
- Mary (10/5): Exceptional -
- Anthony (8/5): We stayed just one night but we slept soundly, despite the room being near the main road. Staff were really good and alw - I liked that it served food and drinks and the staff were exceptionally attentive and helpful. N/a
- traceymichelleF4978K (8/5): Two night stay for a family event nearby. - We stayed for two nights with my mum who is elderly. We were all very comfortable in our rooms and had good nights sleep. Fluffy towels and face cloths, toiletries, tea/ coffee and biscuits replenished daily. Mum’s room had a walk in shower and the stairs were similar to a domestic staircase so she could manage with her reduced mobility. The food for dinner and breakfast was absolutely delicious and the service was excellent! But the Blue Anchor’s crowning glory is its staff, who were cheerful, friendly, helpful and anticipated every need. We will definitely return to eat and stay overnight again.
- Frances (8/5): Very welcoming and accommodating, allowing for an early check-in - Lots of character, very clean and comfortable . Staff were very friendly Room was quite small but did have everything needed
- Kaarin (10/5): Best hotel in the area! - I have often stayed at this hotel when travelling for business in the area and it never disappoints. The service, staff, ambience, excellent food and easy car parking, makes it a must stay. Always a genuine welcome and the pwners / staff happy to chat whilst you're there. Fantastic breakfast and a great dinner menu, congrats to the chef for thier consistent wonderful, tasty food.
- Elise (10/5): - A lovely property with a great pub. The food was excellent and thankfully the weather was sunny and warm. What a wonderful evening to eat outside in their Olive Garden.
The owners and the staff were all so helpful in guiding us to a sweet evening stroll.
We knew they had great reviews and they are well deserved. Our room was quiet, comfortable, and cool. Thank you!
- Roderick (10/5): Excellent - Cle as n and friendly and great service Nothing
- Terry (9/5): Perfect for our 1 night stay after attending a nearby wedding. - Easy check in / self checkout, friendly staff , good parking opposite the pub ( but don’t park under the trees like I did, car absolutely covered in bird poo ) we had breakfast before leaving, very good 👍
- Beverley (8/5): Very good -
- Paul (8/5): Very good -
- Diane (9/5): Superb - The building was interesting due to its age.
The staff were helpful and friendly. Nothing
- Lucy (10/5): Fab - Lovely place to stay with great food and friendly service
- Jean (6/5): Not value fir money - Large towels, clean Small rooms, uncomfortable bed linen, noisy
- Jim (8/5): Nice...friendly and relaxed. - Really nice pub/hotel...friendly, clean...altogether pleasant.
I thought the price was plenty...especially with breakfast (large! Good.) quite an expensive extra.
Evening meal was very good...again, top end of price bracket for the overall quality though. Cost.
- Iain (10/5): Comfy overnight stay - Lovely place to stay, compact but comfy, very clean and tidy
We were already eating elsewhere but the restaurant looked really good, great menu
- Wallis (10/5): - Excellent hotel, will definitely stay there again, would highly recommend
- Geraldine (10/5): - Lovely room. Very clean and everything you need. We had breakfast the following morning which was very tasty
- Roger (5/5): Restaurant menu was good but a little small in portions - Staff were attentive and helpful Room was very small and bathroom although well equipped was a bit of an obstacle.
- Jean (7/5): Good - The young staff are a bonus to this hotel. Breakfast was an extra cost, not really made clear when I booked.
The heating in the room (5) was opportune, only one radiator worked, a problem the hotel recognised as two free standing heaters were in the room.
The hot water was next to non existent and trickled from the hot tap at a very slow pace, if you stay here expect to wait minutes for hot water.
- Robbie (10/5): Exceptional -
- Elph13 (10/5): Lovely venue - The team at the Blue Anchor were kind and wonderful in hosting our family during the time of a funeral and also hosting a gorgeous wake for us. The food was excellent and the drinks lovely and all of the staff were understanding and respectful of our grief.
- Victoria (6/5): Lovely staff but average room. - Extremely friendly staff throughout our stay and evening meal. The food was delicious and we loved the gin tasting experience. The room felt a little tired and dated. There are lots of paint scuff marks on the walls and doors and the bathroom was tired, plus I really don’t like shower curtains, it was also annoying that the bathroom door didn’t stay open. The bed was comfy, but the pillows were extremely flat. Our room was also extremely hot, despite turning the radiators down. I had to sleep with no covers and the fan on!
- David (4/5): - The noise from the road was constant all night. Very broken sleep. Room was small but fine, shower a bit weak. For the price it was fine but I would not stay again due to the noise from the road.
- Rod (10/5): Reliable alwaysc - Great food lovely atmosphere
- Louise (10/5): Outstanding - Beautiful room and outstanding food, staff was amazing also, short walk to shop and just a really lovely stay, we will be back It was all perfect, food, stay and staff were amazing
- Carley (10/5): Lovely cosy room, fab food! - A lovely village pub, nice and cosy rooms, we stayed at the back of the pub and room was lovely and quiet. Nice and warm.
We ate in the restaurant for our evening meal, food was delicious and service was superb! We will definitely be retuning when we get our next child free evening.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - The only thing was the traffic noise if you have room road side of the hotel. also not clear about breakfast when booking.
- Bernadette (8/5): Very good -
- Julian (8/5): Warm and comfortable - Warm, clean and comfortable room. Good sized car park. We didn't eat there on this occasion but pleased that coffee, water, biscuits etc. were topped up in the room each day. Convenient location for our visit to see family. It would have been nice to have been pre-advised about the function / disco taking place below our bedroom on our second night. Thankfully the disco finished at 11.00pm and there was minimal noise after that.
- Rachael1967 (6/5): The Blue Anchor rooms are tired and in need of upgrade. Bedding good, general cleanliness OK. - The breakfast available at additional cost was a good standard with a wide choice. The mattress on the bed was soft to the point of being uncomfortable. The hot water was temperamental and therefore a bath was not an option (power shower was fine, but over a bath you could not use).
- Faye (10/5): We'd rate extra stars if we could! - Our stay was beyond amazing.
The room was so homely and cosy, we loved it.
We had an evening meal and a breakfast, the food was incredible.
The staff at dinner and breakfast were so kind and welcoming, professional, completely faultless.
The staff made the stay that much more special, so thank you.
We cant wait to stay again.
- Tracey (8/5): Very good -
- MIMYSON (4/5): Great pub, poor hotel. - Looks lovely from the outside and clearly a successful pub/restaurant (judging by the number of people in the bar area) but is very poor as a hotel. The room I stayed in was nice enough but the road noise is awful and I kept checking the windows as was convinced one of them must be open. There is also clearly a door downstairs that I assume is used by the staff as it is in constant use, slams shut when it is and the whole room shook every time it did. Can’t believe it would be difficult to put a closer mechanism on it. The en-suite is tiny and the shower was laughable (almost no flow of water). Finally, there are no curtains just some barely suitable blinds and the light from the lamp directly outside meant I could almost read in my room with no light on. Simple blackout curtains would have fixed this.
Feels like they have not really put much thought into the hotel element and could be so much better with a little bit of investment.
Staff were lovely however and very welcoming.
- Emma (6/5): Comfortable stay with some things that could be improved - It had a very comfortable bed, was clean and the food was great The room smelt like damp/ mould. Shower pressure bad. If you could sort this out then review score would have been higher as otherwise really comfortable stay
- Anthony (8/5): Very Good -
- Michael (6/5): Pleasant - Room We arrived on Sunday afternoon to find that breakfast was not available the following day because the restaurant was closed on Mondays. At the very least there should have been a cold continental-type breakfast set out for overnight guests.
- Debbie (3/5): Disappointing 😞 - Great location. Cleanliness in the bathroom could have been better. Dirty mastic at the back of the basin, shower and bath area. We were kept awake most of the night by the couple next door having a major argument, not impressed. Perhaps soundproofing between rooms could be improved.
- Richard (9/5): Superb -
- Colette (10/5): Exceptional -
- Martin (9/5): I hope I have a reason to stay in that part of Essex again as I will see if the Blue Anchor is free. - Superb full size bath! Also handy for nearby Kelvedon station. Nothing
- Jake (7/5): Good -
- Mr (10/5): Anniversary stay - Hotel/pub was very nice, old with lots of original features, food was amazing, great chef, will definitely be returning in the future
