steelyscott (10/5): We love staying at the Sweetwater Inn! - My wife and I love staying at the Sweetwater Inn whenever we visit Mendocino. We usually travel with other couples who told us about this great place. The cottages are cozy, comfortable, and feel like a perfect home base for a few relaxing days on the coast. We especially appreciate the privacy and charm of the individual cottages—it makes the stay feel much more special than a typical hotel. The location is great for walking into town, enjoying the ocean views, and exploring the area. Every time we stay here it feels like a little retreat, and we always look forward to coming back. (For a fee, your dogs are welcome.)
Susan (6/5): It was tolerable, but was anxious to leave. - Location to most of the restaurants and shops I know this was a small room, but it also had too much furniture for the size. The pillows on the bed were terrible. The cost of new pillows for this room is minimal. There wasnt anyone at the desk when we checked in at 4:00PM. The access to the application on the television were a challenge to operate. Had to call for help, and even the person who showed up didnt know how either. The individual was nice enough, but when he called for help the person on the phone was short tempered and rude. If there are extra steps to using the TV it would help to have printed instructions. I understand that there probably isnt a necessity for air conditioning, but only one window had a screen and that screen didnt fit the window, and there were large gaps for dirt and bugs.

Hospitable, informative and welcoming staff. Cheerful, peaceful, beautiful atmosphere. Excellent restaurants (Luna and Cafe Beaujolais right next door. Easy parking. Lovely nearby coastal walks. Mendocino Art Center is nearby. What more could one want?!

Sweetwater preserves the feel of Mendocino as it was 40 years ago. An amazing headlands hike is right out the front door. Accommodating and friendly staff. Thank you Ann. Great stay. Maybe the coffee maker. It didn’t have a light on it when it was turned on. That may have been a safety concern though😜

Also, they delivered delicious pastries every morning AND they even had vegan options. The stairs to our room were a little steep, not a problem for my husband and I but less able people might have a problem with that room.(we were in Rivergate) however I saw many other options at this property so all you would need to do is double check if you were booking a ground floor or not.

annajay21 (10/5): Very charming and comfy! - We had a fabulous stay! We stayed in the smallest room "Rosie's Room" but it was honestly plenty of space for us for our 2 night stay. They even left us a special treat for us for our anniversary. It's directly across the street from a path down to the beach and you can walk anywhere in the town - hardly used the car once we arrived. One of our days was rainy, and the sauna/hot tub was the best way to spend the rainy afternoon!

The acomadations are lovely, comfy and new and not at all stuffy. The kitchen was fully set up. Even though you're staying in the middle of the town, the Sweetwater site, cabins and converted towers, makes you feel a hundred miles away--and then the town's right there. A great time.

I didn't drive my car at all while we were there. The breakfast muffins were huge and delicious. I would suggest it to my friends and hope to go back again sometime.
garydowning (8/5): Wonderful place to stay in the heart of Mendocino - We stayed in the Redwood Tower and enjoyed use of the communal hot tub. We even cooked to save us a couple of meals dining out, and suggest them stocking the kitchen better with flatware, glassware, cookware, and even spices to better accommodate occasional usage.

roxannah999 (6/5): Check first about weather before you book! - The whole reason for booking was because we wanted the experience of the spa hot tubs etc. And the location close to the restaurant we were told would be open. The hours for them ( hot tub amenities) are very limited and close early and open late. So if they don't open until 11 and checkout is at 11...well...you do the math. Plus they were closed due to weather and no coupons or discounts were offered. So we didn't get to use them at all. And to boot the restaurant that we specifically wanted to visit was closed as well. So all that money for basically us to sit in a living room.

Had cheap soap in an ECOS bottle that smelled like gasoline. The community hot tub was not available because they locked the doors.

Filled an ECOS bottle with cheap soap that smelled liked gasoline and dried out my hands. Dry, day old muffins delivered too late for “breakfast.” Community hot tub was not available since they locked the doors to it. But wanted to charge a fee to use their “other” spa facilities. This is neither a resort nor a spa! Just say no and stay elsewhere!

Blueberry muffins delivered to my door was also a nice touch :) would definitely recommend. I stayed in the Flower Cottage which was the perfect size.

martaeH5254QW (4/5): Overall disappointment - Booked the Garden Cottage that seemed from the description it would be perfect for our 4 night romantic get away. Well..... the quaint cottage had the modern touches advertised ( hot tub, private deck/patio) smart TV, frig and mircrowave- but unfortunately the cottage electricity hadn't been updated and the circuit blew several times during our stay- the electric outlets for plugging in any piece of equipment were so old, that the plug simply fell out-- couldn't make the connection. Very frutrating. The ant invasion in the kitchen kept us from enjoying preparing food. The refrigerator was positioned on the floor where one needed to virtually sit on the floor to add or remove items from the frig which was unfortunate for our 70+ year old bodies. We were awakened at 1:00 a.m. by pounding on our door by some unknown drunk shouting obsenities. We left one day early. And oh, we ran the "hot water" in the bathroom a full 4 minutes before it actually turned from icy cold to warm. Not the romantic get away we were hoping for. The manager was very kind and did refund one night's stay which we apprecited. They were quite pleasant for any request we made and the muffins arrived each morning were indeed delicious. We did enjoy wonderful massages at the Spa on site!

Outdated shabby accommodations in Rivergate room; the bed was difficult! The place is questionable in its cleanliness and I suspect there is mold everywhere! Staff is nice - so called pastries in the morning are 7-11 equivalent blueberry muffins 😝

962jennifferd (2/5): I will never go to Sweetwater Inn again! - I will never go to Sweetwater Inn again. Too bad, I'd had some nice times there in years past - this time I stayed in the Sweetwater Tower, which was so unlike what I read on their website and was, in fact, horrible. They don't tell you that the bathroom you share with UP TO 12 GUESTS is ONE COMMODE - yes, that's 1 commode for up to 12 hot tub guests! The website calls it a "private room prized by those seeking romance and renewal" - they don't tell you it's directly above the big hot tub and all the conversations happening in the tub echo and come right up through the floor to your ha-ha private room, and don't forget the very loud sound of the hob tub motor - so romantic! I did not use the spa, I did not use the hot tub, I didn't even use the shower or their towel and turned my key in the minute the office opened in the morning. I explained that I could not stay in that room - that I am a secretary, I saved and saved to go on this vacation and I would have rather stayed home than rent a room with ONE commode for up to 12 people and that the noise of the hot tub guests and the ever-churning motor were far too loud for me to sleep. Too bad for me, the inn keeper just shouted at me over and over that it was high season (it wasn't, it was September 22-24 and town was dead) and she couldn't refund me (not even a discount, not one dollar off). I paid $576.09 for 3 nights in a very crappy room that I spent one dreadful night in (I didn't arrive until after 6:00pm). I walked down the street to the MacCallum House - which had 11 open rooms for me to choose from - and had a very delightful stay. That's where I'll go the next time I am in Mendocino - they treated me so well! I will never go to Sweetwater again and I hope I never see that innkeeper again.

rebecca (10/5): - Sweetwater Inn and Spa is a lovely, large, comfortable, cozy studio apartment. A full sofa neatly separates the bed/living area from the kitchen/dining area. The round dining table comfortably fits 3 people. The full kitchen is well supplied with pots, pans, etc. They deliver breakfast muffins every day. A gas fireplace cozily drives away the evening ocean chill. A large screen TV accesses lots of channels. The queen bed is comfortable. Good quality linens. We have free access to sauna and hot tub. All units beautifully set in lush gardens. And, the inn is walkable to restaurants, museums, hiking, the ocean, quiet beaches and a grocery store. This is a lovely, quiet retreat.

Well-appointed, although did not get to try the stove (I usually cook), which had electric coils, 3 of which where kind of tilted ... while one was flat. Maybe next time, as we do intend to return. Liked that the 2 restaurants we dined at were just behind the property! My husband has a bad knee, so walking the very short distance was a positive! Walking distance to good coffee place to get my morning cappuccino. :) Loved the way the grounds/garden were maintained and having a parking spot was very nice! We were not able to try the spa ... perhaps next time.

Our tower was shabby and tiny. Kitchen was tnier and had minimal furnshings. Bathroom was tiniest. Can't imagine squeezing 6 people into this space!! DEFINITELY NOT WORTH THE PRICE OF ADMISSION. TV KEPT HAVING TO REWIND.

Great location, with an easy walk to every thing in town, including the beautiful headlands and river. The comfy rooms provide a great space and every morning there are wonderful muffins. But the special treat is access to the tubs which just melt all the tensions away. Perfect holiday.

Last, our queen bed was comfortable. When I chose the room I was under the impression that the second bed was not a sofa bed. Also, if the sofa bed was longer and more comfortable it would have been fine, but it sagged, was too short and very squeaky when my daughter turned.
Verified traveler (6/5): Sourwater - Almost all individual units, great not sharing a wall with another noisy guest. Fully equipped kitchen, grass, flowers, housed far off the street—all good. Two good restaurants and spa only a few steps away down a path—also good.However, management of this property apparently does not believe business is best enhanced by flattering and coddling guests. Guests are scolded about everything from water use to washcloth use to dishwashing. I want inn keepers who treat me like an honored guest, not one who sees me as a threat to his bottom line. The water use concerns, in particular, were disingenuous. If ownership were truly worried about “every precious drop of water,” it would not be operating a spa on this property. Don’t expect much service from on-site management. Hunter Biden worked longer hours for Ukraine than does the management of Sweetwater.

Great location being downtown and right behind Luna Italian restaurant and very close to Patterson's (my favorite pub). Has everything you need. We go every year. Mendocino is magical. Make sure you walk the trail around the shore cliffs!! That is a must do. Scenery is amazing

One bed was very comfy, the one by the kitchen, not so much. We stayed in Sears Tower. The layout is strange because of how it was arranged. Bed by the kitchen. Kitchen is very bare bones but it worked for us.

They accommodated my dietary restrictions and provided me with air filters when the room triggered my allergies and asthma. The Apple Cottage was very musty and triggered my allergies and asthma. They did provide me with 2 HEPA filters that solved the problem. The parking was quite difficult for the Cottage. They had a space that was very hard to get into and was completely blocked if anyone else parked by it.

The location, right in Mendocino Village, is fantastic. Their rooms, cottages, and water towers are all nice and reasonably priced. And we love the spa hot tub/sauna rooms (they offer a complementary 1 1/2 hour in the communal hot tub but we prefer the private).

618gillianf (4/5): Not what it used to be :( - I have stayed here a number of times before, and unfortunately have to report that the inn has gone downhill. The staff is no longer sweet, welcoming and accommodating - it feels transactional and lacks personality or care. Additionally, a funny smell permeated the room and building (like they are having sewage issues - granted it's an old building, but still). The rooms in the main building are tired and drab, and there is a ton of road noise - even with the windows closed (but you may want to open the windows due to the stench). After many years of recommending everyone to stay here, I would look elsewhere in this sweet town where BnBs are plentiful.
