- Alicia (9/5): - Great location. Not just where it is, but the building itself is wonderful.
- Mark (9/5): Lovely. We would like to come again. - The historical feel of wonky floors and great views Slightly disappointed with bunk beds but it was fun
- Chassagnon (10/5): Un établissement parfait pour séjourner à Whitby - Tout et particulièrement l’emplacement. Rien
- Sydney (9/5): We loved the building and our stay was very exciting and enjoyable - Loved the breakfast, communal areas were great No hand towel provided for our en suite bathroom - we had to rent one for £3.50
- Lynn (8/5): -
- Mclaughlin (8/5): -
- Marc (10/5): YHA Whitby- exceeds expectations - Location, Comfy bed, vfm Nothing
- Michala (9/5): Spacious room , well equipped with extra sockets ,lovely beds, bedding and pillows. Great value for money, fantastic loc - Good location & lots of seating inside and out .
Lovely building .
Very friendly staff .
Good choice of food and drinks, reasonable priced as well .
Great idea to have vending machines for late night snacks. Not much parking near place itself and quite tight if have large vehicle at turning around , and parking does fill up quickly near abbey too, hard work if have suitcases and weather bad
But I guess that’s Whitby on a whole !
Room we stayed in was large and well equipped with extra sockets which was appreciated, but unfortunately the shower room smelt horrendous so we bought air freshener while out and kept door closed as much as possible , as the smell did enter the room, we had to sleep with window open
Bin in room didn’t have liner in which we couldn’t understand as would have made things easier for the cleaner !
Few common areas in need of fresh paint too

- Sally (10/5): Great stay for a few days - Beautiful old property located next door to the abbey ruins and 199 steps. Well set up for guests or visitors to pop in for food & drink. Great atmosphere. One bathroom between 12 in one dorm
- colin (8/5): -
- JIARUI (10/5): -
- Art (10/5): -
- tracy (8/5): Well worth staying and being central for everything - The convenience and price value for money Nothing
- Callum (10/5): -
- Maciej (9/5): -
- Jason (8/5): Great cannot go wrong for a group of people - Great location, nice building Location
- Scarlett (10/5): Fantastic!!!! - Great location, lovely staff. We will be staying again! The view of the Abbey from our room was exceptional!!!!! Maybe another bottle refill station in reception
- Naskar (10/5): - The location was incredible — from room 12, I could see part of Whitby Abbey right from my window (room 11 might have an even better view). The back garden was beautiful, with another amazing angle of the abbey. I had breakfast in the café, sitting outside in a second garden overlooking the sea, and the whole morning just felt perfect. Can't think of anything.
- Dale (9/5): Great value - Easy check in, facilities were basic but spotless, I was in 4 bed dorm with en suite, nice & quiet in wonderful setting.
It has an on site restaurant/ bar plus a kitchen if you prefer DIY meals which would work out cheaper & there's a water station for filling bottles & if you want a change of scenery is The Brewery Tap pub round the corner well worth a visit & also on check in as an added bonus I was given a free ticket for admission into the abbey.
So in conclusion for the price it's very much value for money especially if you're on a tight budget. Not much to grumble about for the price but the obvious one Is the 199 steps to get to there & there's no get out clause if your walking but the Whitby Tour bus from town is well worth a couple of quid for us oldies & drops at the abbey gate.
Other things to consider for the management are maybe a few more lockers for belongings, there were only 2 in my room & they had been claimed, so I had to shove my belongings under the bed, which wasn't a problem as such but for security I'd have preferred a locker.
The only other gripe was the breakfast although it's convenient I'm afraid it's only adequate at best don't get me wrong the food is fine just not enough for the price £11 if your feeling perky in the morning I'd suggest going into town for better value.
- Francesca (8/5): - The amazing building and views and abbey outside the window view No kettle in room and breakfast stopped at 9.30 wishing it was 11am
- Ana-Maria (10/5): -
- grace (10/5): Made my stay easy and more enjoyable - Friendly staff. Clean. Light and PowerPoint next to every bed. Nothing
- David (9/5): Amazing location - Friendly staff
Amazing location
Warm
Amazing cafe/bar room The coffee was passable. Maybe installing a continental coffee machine (like in IKEA) could improve this
- Jun (10/5): -
- Chris (8/5): Friendly staff, great kitchen, close to local amenities and lovely costal walk. - Couldn’t fault anything for the price we paid, tried to Reebok but prices have become extortionate in yha
- Ahmad (9/5): -
- Josephine (10/5): Unreal location, friendly staff and great facillities. - The staff were wonderful. They went above and beyond to ensure we had a good stay and our needs were seen to. There was an issue booking with YHA
- Sean (5/5): Nice - Age, character,setting Shower,toilet
- Amarinder (1/5): - Couldnt even find the property
- McIvor (8/5): - The location and value for money.
- angela (10/5): Faaantastic! Whitby Hostel! 10 Star - Everything!
- Yuzi (9/5): -
- Amanda (7/5): - Good location, friendly staff. The age and nature of the building meant that it was possible to hear a lot of noise from other residents which disturbed me frequently overnight.
- Guest (8/5): -
- Neil (9/5): - Location and staff.
- Caroline (10/5): -
- Joanne (8/5): Great location for an affordable family getaway - Superb location, and great value for money. Bathroom dated and a slight smell of stagnant water in there.
- Elena (8/5): - Good cafe/restaurant open long hours.
Good location beautiful surroundings.
Good lighting in the room.
- scott (6/5): overnight stay in cheap accommodation - location difficulty finding car entrance, signs were rather small and on abbey wall at a distance (website hadnt detailed info either). top floor without lift in this building. single pane windows didnt reduce sound of storm dave. metal ice cream sign in car park kept banging against wall all night. door closer not much use and loud on entry.
- fay (10/5): - Very easy to find, the room was big, loads of space, loved that u get a free ticket to Whitby Abbey It could do with a good dust, as there were cobwebs on the windows and a few in the cupboard
- Débora (7/5): Typical UK hostel. - Location with beautiful views.
Free entry ticket to the Abbey.
Nice café and outdoor area.
Spacious bedrooms.
The toilet and shower room were separate. Only 4 lockers in a bedroom for 10 people.
No individual lights nor little shelf on the walls next to the beds to put stuff.
The breakfast was expensive and didn't look very tempting.
- Jessica (10/5): - Food was lovely. Tent was clean and very cosy. Staff were friendly and very helpful. Thank you
- Sophie (1/5): - The location Cold and the room heating didn't work
U could melt the bad drains from the sink in the room couldn't sleep all night with the smell 🙄
The water was dirty
The room was room 9

- Page (10/5): - How helpful staff were, cooking facilities, the grounds ect I liked it all, could not fault it
- Heather (10/5): Superb location and comfortable beds - I was very comfortable and slept like a log. The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. The hostel is a fascinating old building, in a stunning location, right next to Whitby abbey. The communal rooms are spacious and decorated well. The bedrooms and bathrooms are very clean and the beds comfortable. Would highly recommend

- JULIE (8/5): Very good and staff thoughtfully upgraded us to bigger room with a view. - Prime location and views, historic and excellent value supporting good cause. Nothing except a little more descriptive information on arrival location and parking ability.
- Conroy (9/5): -

- Ruth (9/5): - Friendly, helpful staff. The breakfast was excellent
- Neil (10/5): Brilliant very happy stay. Great spot - Very very clean & tidy
- Catherine (10/5): Wonderful staff, comfortable, I find the heavy doors very hard to get through - The staff serving the breakfast were wonderful, fab atmosphere in the cafe. Would have liked ordinary decaf tea, a veggie sausage that was veggie protein rather than veg + potato. It did seem quite pricey compared with other accommodation breakfasts for what you got.
- Hyer (9/5): -
- Linda (4/5): Sadly disappointed in the room, which spoilt an otherwise pleasant stay. - The location is fantastic for views of the town/harbour below and very close to the Abbey and its museum. The historic building that houses the YHA is lovely, and quite interesting. That we could not sleep for the 3 nights we stayed there and were so exhausted it ruined our visit. The problem being that there was none or very insufficient soundproofing to the room and the guests in nearby rooms were moving and talking loudly during the early hours of the morning (2-4 AM). Following the first night I informed the housekeeper of the problem and was told it would be "awkward" to move us to another room; but having found out the guests in the next room would be leaving, I agreed that would solve the problem. The second night, during the early hours, we were distrubed by noise from other guests and took matters in-hand by shouting for them to be quiet. The housekeeper told me that morning I should have gone to reception where a staff member would have dealt with the distrubance. So, when the noise started again during our last night there, at 2am in the morning I went down (twice) to reception for help. There was nobody in reception, or any nearby areas I searched. I went outside and rang the bell (as if I had been locked out) and nobody responded, so I resorted to telephoning the emergency number. This did result in a staff member coming to our room to help, but unfortunately this did not negate another night's disturbance. The room we were given had been divided into two (as it was orignally so large) and beds in each of the rooms were placed against the adjoining wall. When checking out, the Manager did discuss my concerns with me, was grateful for my feedback and mentioned a possible partial rebate. I explained our disappointment, especially as we and our friends like to be very supportive of the YHA and its values. Hopefully, soundproofing improvements will be arranged for the rooms concerned so that other guests do not have the same experience.
- Kathy (10/5): - All staff are the loveliest people i have ever met. So friendly and kind and thoughtful throughout all my stays 💓 I would of liked to have had a bottle of stout or bottle of Porter. There were lots of lager and IPA but sadly no dark beer.
- chawaphon (9/5): -
- Louise (10/5): Amazing - The location was amazing!!
Staff, we're lovely
The price was great 👍
- Maciej (8/5): -
- Andrew (8/5): - Great location for the one night stay
- keith (9/5): -
- Jamie (9/5): Lovely, relaxing visit - It was excellent value for money, in a great location with parking. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Everything was fine and as expected. We wouldn't change anything.
- Alan H. (10/5): Fantastic - The bar and restaurant. Everything was great
- Zoe (9/5): -
- Anne (7/5): Enjoyed the peace and closeness to work - Liked the kitchen and shower facilities. Had plenty of space and staff really friendly. Peaceful, beautiful and quiet Having a sleeping area in the rear of a communal kitchen. We had area to ourselves but at high season there would be people in the communal kitchen which is separate from the sleeping area by a small screen. You wouldn't feel yourself or belongings would be 100% secure or private
- Chris (10/5): It was amazing we returned home yesterday and already planning to go back, the guy on reception was polite and very help - Lovely location beautiful views just an amazing building
- claire (9/5): We had a great 1 night stay with our 3 children. Great location, we will definitley be back again :) - Superb location, right next to Whitby Abbey with fabulous views over Whitby harbour. Good private room , great shower, comfy beds, great breakfast and 1 child can eat for £1. Free parking is great too. We appreciated the free family ticket to visit Whitby Abbey too :)
- Marie (10/5): Perfect happy place to be. - Comfortable perfect warm place to visit. I love everything there.
- Sarah (8/5): Great staff- beautiful location and a very old property - great for a short getaway with your family. Perfect! - Friendly staff easy check in The photos on booking.com are misleading for the studio. Sleeping in a kitchen with noisy fridges and a green light, plus no metal beds as shown of the images on booking.com made the experience very different. No noise after 11pm but the staff above may have been moving furniture or working - all this added to little sleep.
- Shaw (10/5): - Everything was spot on .The staff the building and surrounding areas i couldn't ask for more . can't wait to return here Nothing
- Gillian (9/5): Atmospheric stay - Location, free parking, free entry to Abbey. Good food in café. Floor above very noisy and creaky. Occupants inconsiderate, allowing running and jumping around, earplugs needed ! Vending machine took more than advertised and did not deliver goods.
- Caroline (9/5): -
- Julia (10/5): We’ll be back - feel we’ve found an amazing secret! - The location and grandeur were amazing, car parking - wow! Staff so lovely- we felt like kings! Faculties, location, staff and abbey tickets!!
- Jo (10/5): - Was just perfect 👌
- Gill (8/5): - Location is amazing
- Christopher (9/5): - Great staff, beautiful location.
- Middleton (9/5): Very enjoyable. Would go again. - The hostel was in a great location and all the staff were friendly, helpful and polite. The room was clean. The food was good. All in all a very enjoyable stay. Thanks n Nothing really v
- Fiona (9/5): Amazing location and great staff. - The location was amazing, staff were lovely and it was very clean. Bed a bit lumpy but usable.
