Guest Reviews
- Matthias (2/5): - Back to the 80
- Shellee (6/5): - The view of
- Nancy (4/5): - Old, slanted floor, old chairs with no support from the 1950’s. Rooms were extremely small. Bathroom window was chained open for ventilation in the bathtub/shower.
No electric plugs in bathroom. Extremely small mirror in bathroom. Not at all worthy of the $170 charge.
- Dawn (6/5): - Friendly management.
- Jeff (2/5): - No hot water in shower. Extremely overpriced for what you get and the quality of the property.
- Leslie (2/5): - Air conditioning didn’t work no internet no tv
- Karen (8/5): - Great lake view. Friendly and helpful staff.
- Stacy (10/5): - Spectacular view offering a peaceful & tranquil view from the comfort of your room! This is the most charming place with extremely friendly owners who can't do enough for their guests. The down to earth atmosphere gives a sense of home away from home and if you're receptive to making friends, simply walk outside enjoy conversing with other travelers on the deck or around a fire. Im sad to leave here but I will absolutely be
- Robbie (10/5): - Nice, affordable, quaint hotel on the lake. Beautiful views and comfortable beds. Will definitely come again.
- Jesse (10/5): - The veiw
- Brent (10/5): - Carla showed care and kindness...met us on the walk so she could great our dog and give him a treat. Have never felt so welcomed at a hotel ever in my life
- Anthony (4/5): - 1950's. Well below average presentation. Bath was terrible.
- Michelle (4/5): Not the best - Place was older, but bed was comfortable and place was clean. There was an odor by the door, not sure if place is on a slab, as maybe have been a dead animal. That was the worst of it.
- Levi (10/5): - Very stress free experience
- Sarah (10/5): - Carla was super nice and accommodating of our delayed check in, and even provided a map of local foods with recommendations! The room was super clean, comfortable, and had an amazing view of Lake Superior right outside our door. 10/10 would stay again.
- Shuang (10/5): - Very convenient… maybe there would be little problem but you can see Carla works hard to run a nice experience… I booked very late but get the hotel and check in instructions and get in easily upon arrival after 11pm… thanks you Carla I will call you later when I have time
- Tera (10/5): Loved it! - Absolutely beautiful spot! Awesome on premise management! Love this little place and would stay here again!
- Valter (8/5): - We were very happy with our last minute stay at Carla's Inn. It was significantly cheaper than other options in the area during move in week at Mich Tech.
- Kathleen (6/5): - It worked but it is very dated and worn down property. Self check in. Wi-Fi only near the window.
- Carla (10/5): - Fire pit and grill
- Tammy (10/5): - The view of Lake Superior was beautiful. The owners were very friendly and down to Earth.
- Rich (10/5): - Beautiful view
- Tonya (10/5): - Very clean, comfortable room. The view of the bay is amazing.
- Robert (6/5): - Old fashioned motel
- Seth (6/5): - Beautiful scenery around the hotel, but not much else within walking distance. Carla was very friendly and helpful in finding local restaurants. The room was ok with a 1980's hotel feel. The only significant downside was that that internet and wifi transmitters were terrible, it would only stay connected for about 3 minutes before kicking me off ,and during that time the Internet speed was equivalent to dial up, making it unusable.
- Lisa (4/5): - The room was hot and window AC was okay. Unsafe and uneven floor. Pretty view. It is "1960's" motel style.
- Tristan (4/5): - Outdated photos on webpage. And not a lot around to eat. My floor was uneven and no water pressure. Internet wouldn’t reach to my room
- Jeffery (10/5): Old Timey Roadside Charmer! - What a great little motel! If you've ever felt the tug of nostalgia about staying at a true mom & pop roadside motel like the ones that we used to have in the US, this is the place to stay at! It was like stepping back into the 1970s....except for the flat screen TV....the old wrought-iron bed....the wooden nightstands...dinette table with wooden chairs....this is what I remember hotels along route 66 being like back in the day! Just a few miles from town, and directly across the street from the bay (do NOT MISS sunrise! It was glorious!) this was the perfect way to be secluded in comfort on our road trip tour of the UP. Clean, super reasonable price, quiet, easy to get to....not a single negative to report. Coffee maker, big refrigerator, microwave, all the needs met. Lots of hot water too! This little GEM of a motel is now on my permanent list of where to stay when we are back in the UP! The nightstand even had a PHONE BOOK...talk about a blast from the past! They even provided a box fan for white noise sleeping like a rock! The air conditioner blew cold too. Screen door on entrance so you can sleep with the main door open if you wanted to. Hats off to the owners! THANK YOU SO MUCH!
- Arnold (2/5): Overpriced for what you get. - When I rate these hotels I always consider the value proposition. In other words does it fit the cost I pay. This room cost more than I typically pay for a 4 star hotel and yet the list of what was classified as a dump is pretty long. For starters the room was sagging towards the woods. That’s right. Not level. So slanted the bathroom door would not stay open. Lawn and weeds growing up everywhere. The outdoor office filled with junk. No electrical outlet in the bathroom. Light switches in odd places. Room furniture coming apart. This was a “dump” to say the least and I could look past some of this if the rate was affordable. But rooms in this area go for $400+ a night so $166 which is what we paid I guess is the bottom end. Just be prepared to sleep at a slant / angle.
- Michael (6/5): - Nice by the lake and fire pit area for fires.
- Jack (2/5): - Did not represent that was shown in photos.
- Kevin (2/5): - Nice view of Lake Superior. The room is very outdated. The floor is not level, extension cords all over and needs a complete remodel. The outside of the property needs some serious repair in more than one area. The ladder someone complained about months ago is still there. A carpenter needs to be hired to finish repairs. Overall we would not stay there again. If we had our car instead of a motorcycle, we would have slept in the car.
- David (8/5): - I did not check out the area when I was booking the place. When I arrived, I did not see an office to go into. I saw a sign that said to call the manager. I asked how I could get in. She had an envelope with my last name pinned to a bulletin board. I was surprised because I saw two other envelopes with names on them. I thought that would not be secure at all. If you are worried about security, I would not recommend this place.
I asked if there was any place to eat around here. She spoke about a hotel restaurant, a Casino restaurant, and a pizzeria that was six miles away. There was also gas station food.
The place only offered a room with a refrigerator and a small microwave. The bathroom was clean, but I was surprised to see a sign that said, " Please hold the handle until the toilet flushes completely! THANKS. I have never had this sign at any hotel or motel before.
They had a plastic packet for the shampoo and conditioner together. It did not tear easily and required me to cut it with scissors or bite it open. I ended up biting it open. They also provided a miniature soap about 1.25", .75", and .25". It seemed very small, but it worked.
The shower was a step-in shower that was about 30" square. They do not have a bathtub if you are interested in that.
I was looking for the thermostat, and when I saw it, it only seemed to set up to heat. Because we are up north, I knew at night it would cool down outside. The screen window was open and a box fan.
- Verified traveler (8/5): So-so - Simple place, friendly owner. A little run down. Wifi was not functional in my room.
- Anthony J. (10/5): - Carla is very helpful very nice place to stay
- Dana (10/5): Nice quiet hotel - I do not usually leave reviews but we stayed here last year and it was a nice place to stay so when we got the chance to go to Keweenaw area again I booked it for this year. It is a older hotel as you can see in the pictures but Carla is super nice and helpful. It is a family business and you can contact Carla if you need anything. The rooms are clean and nice inside and has everything you need. It is a nice quiet pretty setting with the water right across the road. I would definitely recommend staying there, we will when we are in the area again.
- Elaine (4/5): - The building and
- tomasz (10/5): - A very tourist-friendly motel – we booked the place online, and an envelope with our name was pinned to the information board, with the room key inside :) In the morning, a breathtaking sunrise. We saw it through the window, but… we stepped outside and were left speechless. The photo was taken right outside the door.
- Amy (10/5): - Perfect stay and view! Very clean and the owners are so very nice😊
- Katharine (2/5): - Property lacks general maintenance. I read there was a fire a couple years ago and it's clear the owners haven't done anything to get it back in shape.
- Sarah (10/5): - Bed was so comfy. Linen and blankets were new and comfy.
- LYNN (10/5): - Towels for just one person. Super nice hosts. Lovely location. Nice location and a very good value. Clean room.
- Robert (4/5): -
The rooms were very small, strps coming out of the room, leading to the parked cars could be dangerous.
- Noel (6/5): - Cute cottage but older. Great view.
- William (10/5): - Great motel. Carla herself checked us in. Had a restaurant next door that burned part of the lobby, but still a great traditional motel.
- Subhankar (8/5): - We stayed there for one day. Good budget friendly room. Just to note it is an old place.
- Keith (6/5): Charming but dated! - Great view of the bay, clean and friendly, easy check in, but motel is old and backed up to a hill, floors are unlevel and nothing is plumb in the building. Overall comfortable and a rustic charm but in need of major overhaul.
- Barbara (4/5): - The place was old. Pockets doors on the bathroom. Bathroom sink is tilted and toilet is loose on the floor. Mattresses sag in the middle. Tv placed above small table tilted downward…watch your head getting up! Ouch, more than once we bumped our heads and back room has a definite dip!
- Jennifer (8/5): Nice 1-night stay - Nice location albeit away from town but great view, lots of outdoor seating and small room thoughtfully filled to address all needs.
- Amy (10/5): - I would recommend Carla’s place to anyone traveling through the area. Carla her self checked my friend and i in late in the evening. She stayed to make sure our tv worked and told us some cool places near by to check out. The room was perfect for two people just needing a place to stay. Beautiful sunrise view, nice patio to enjoy coffee. Horse shoe and cornhole games in the yard. Refrigerator, coffee, and even a microwave.
What really stood out and what would bring us back, is how accommodating Carla was. We woke up to a flat tire in the morning and with it being on a weekend, no place around was able to help. Carla was understanding and told us to stay as long as we needed past check out untill we could get help to get us back on the road safely!
- Beth (10/5): - *
- Garth (10/5): - I had a very nice, clean room and it was ready when I arrived. The property is a bit dated but I like the improvements the owners are making. The view of the lake is amazing, and the owners were really nice!!
- Richard (4/5): - 2024 price for a 1950's motel.
- Janis (10/5): - Nice, quiet lake view motel
- Lois (10/5): - What a wonderful view from our room of the sunrise. Dog friendly that was nice. There is no restaurant at site even advertisement said there was however Carla had a great list of resturants near by. On recommenday would be to have one dog friendly room with a railing near the 3 steps
We appreciated the grab bars near the front door.
- Richard (8/5): - Carla was very pleasant and the overnight was great for just 1 person. Too tight if my wife had been with me. It needs more TLC and general upkeep. I congratulate the owners for keeping it going, though in a tough economy.
The next-door restaurant was closed, and none were right nearby.
The view facing east across the bay was gorgeous and the price was good.
- John (2/5): - I liked the convenience of location,,I had two kids to pickup and move on.
If you have dogs this is a great place to hang out,,
If you are a non dog owner you will not like it,
Reasonable price for short lay over
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Clean but ald and need a lot of upgrades.
- Claudia (10/5): - It was a relaxing place to stay. The staff were friendly. It could use some clean up outside, weeding. The bed was great as were the sheets, pillows, blankets.
- Ursula (10/5): - Not only is Carla one of the sweetest people you will meet, she was also helpful with all my questions regarding dining options to rock hunting. The room was comfy, clean and had so much charm. Thanks for a great stay Carla!
- Laurie (4/5): - This motel was unkept and in bad need of repair. There was a tree laying on the back of the building with a 4x4 proping up the over hang. Our room smelled of wet dog. The room was dirty with hair stuck to the camper size (no joke on the size) bathroom wall, no bathroom door only a curtain. The bathroom window (inside of shower) didn't close completely. The toiltet was approximately 3 feet from the edge of the bed.The floor around the edges of the room needed vacuuming. Cob webs on the ceiling. Upholstered furniture was broken and filthy.
We would have stayed elsewhere if another was available within our budget and in the Keeweenaw.
- Ruth (4/5): - This is your typical "mom & pop" motel of the 50s and 60s. The cute picture is misleading, because it is so old and dated. The room is extremely small. We had to put our suitcase on one of the comfy chairs, because there was no place else and no luggage rack. The bathroom was so small and it was impossible to use the only outlet in there. We stayed 2 nights. When we returned from our travels on the second day, we discovered that the trash had been taken out (though they did not bother to put new bags in the cans.) They left a new coffee packet, but hadn't cleaned out the coffee pot. New towels were left, but we had to go ask for toilet paper. And asking for anything can be problematic because the host/owner is not on site. If you just need a quick place to sleep and leave, this would work, I guess, but we were hoping for much more.
- Patty (6/5): - We enjoyed our stay and Carla was wonderful.
- Faye (10/5): Fantastic deal with a beautiful view. - Every day one of the owners checked with us and offered their direct cell phone numbers in case of any concerns.
I have serious bad issues and we slept very comfortably in the queen bed. No frills but a fantastic value. We definitely will go again. Beautiful view on Lake Superior.
- Linda (6/5): Not as advertized. - This reminded me of a dating service inhanced and not the same as the picture. There was no restaurant hasn't been in over a year. Remains of burned building still attached. There had been remodeling to our room that was all poorly done. The place in general was run down. It's a 50.00 motel for 109.00. Its sits right on the main highway so it's noisy. There is the cove in front of the motel but you can't get to it it's rocky. My total bill on line was 105.00 but I ended up being charged 109.00?
- Nancy (10/5): - Felt very safe. No one there at check in but communication was very clear. Well lite outside.
- Jennifer (6/5): - Carla was nice and worked with us through some issues, though the facility had a lot to be desired. There is no longer a restaurant and it’s a lot more outdated (at least what’s leftover from the fire) than expected. Not a bad place, though it was not what we were expecting.
- Bronson (10/5): - Great location close to the bay and beaches.
- SHARON (4/5): - The view was fantastic. The price was low for the area
- Verified traveler (6/5): Has potential to be good. - ### Review of Carla’s Motel
I recently stayed at Carla’s Motel, and my experience was a mixed bag. On the positive side, the room was clean, which is always a crucial factor for any stay. However, the room was very old and outdated, with furniture and fixtures that have seen better days. The bed was quite uncomfortable, making it hard to get a good night's sleep.
One significant issue was that we were given the wrong room. This mix-up was frustrating and added unnecessary inconvenience to our stay. Additionally, the property itself was not well maintained. Despite a fire a few years ago that burned down the restaurant, there is still debris scattered around, which detracts from the overall appearance and feel of the place.
Communication with the owner was also a challenge. There is no main office, and the owner was not present when we arrived to check in. This made it difficult to get settled, and we had a hard time reaching her for assistance.
Overall, while Carla’s Motel has potential, the combination of outdated accommodations, poor property maintenance, and communication issues with the owner made for a less-than-ideal stay.
- Bret (6/5): - The rooms were cleaned. The shower was missing the shower head. The wifi did not work for us, but password was provided. There is no front desk, our key & info was provided in an envelope on a bulletin board. The restaurant burned down a year ago, you have to go into town for food.
- Carla (10/5): - Room was small but very clean, no ice was available, no dining. enjoyed the fantastic very and lovely conversation with the owner.
- Gilbert (6/5): Nothing Special - We arrived late but there was no one to greet us. Key was attached to a board outside. The television worked horribly with only a few stations available. The room was clean but nothing special. The bed was comfortable.
- Jerome (8/5): - Room was clean and owner was very helpful, but property is showing its age.
- Alicia (10/5): - Awesome
- Marlan (6/5): - I understand that the motel has suffered from a fire in the past year, but the location was kind of desolate and it was the end of the season and I was the only customer staying at the motel. It really felt a little bit like a set up for a slasher movie. :-) The room was clean and it overall it was acceptable, but it really is dated to the 1960's or there about. The room was also pretty small, but it had two comfortable club chairs which is a huge plus in my opinion. The highway noise was a little bothersome but not much.
- James (4/5): - No restaraunt no office open rooms very outdated and small especially bathroom, noise from road makes to hard tp sleep. showed me I got what I paid for
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Traffic noise bad
- joseph (4/5): - Noisy due to proximity of highway, no working Wifi, a/c not working and room very stuffy.
- Jesse (10/5): Great little spot in Baraga - It's a small motor lodge and feels like a small motor lodge, but it's comfortable, has a great view, and is a worthwhile stop for weary travelers.
- Theresa (8/5): - Very good for where it is
- Rwei (10/5): - Amazing view and very friendly host!
- Danny (10/5): - Restaurant connected to the motel. Great food and great view out of my window. Will definitely stay again next trip
- Shannon (6/5): - It was a great location and had great views of the water. My only real issue with it was the smell. It is an older place and smells like it. The owners were friendly, and the restaurant was super convenient.
- Thomas (8/5): Overnight stop - Very friendly folks who run it. Clean room, but small and very retro. Notbad for an overnight stay.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Everything I wanted and expected! - Perfect little motel with an awesome view! The bed was incredibly comfortable too!
- Christine (8/5): - Comfortable beds, friendly staff and amazing view. The property is definitely older which is a challenge in the bathroom with finicky faucets but the room had everything we needed for just two nights. We’d like to stay again during their summer season when the restaurant is open and we can enjoy more time by the water.
- Jason (10/5): Great view - A small and cozy place to stay. There a was a fan for white noise if road traffic or neighbors are noisy. The view was beautiful. It's a small place, so theyre not always open, so checking out was a little odd but went great! I called Carla on the phone who seemed like a very nice person to let her know i was checking out. Thanks!
- gavin (10/5): - Carla and her staff are wonderful people. And the restaurant has good food
- Lee (10/5): - .
- Angelina (8/5): - It was the dead of Winter, but we had a warm and cozy "cottage like" room. Staff was wonderful. functionality was perfect. It is nothing fancy, think "old up north cottage" but met our needs, and was an amazing value. I recommend slippers in the winter - the bathroom floors are chilly!
- Robert (10/5): Nice overall - Every thing was clean. The bed sheets were amazing. Soft flannel. Lots of towels. Heater in room was easy to adjust.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Beautiful view!!
- Orsolya (10/5): - The people who work there (check-in staff and housekeeping staff) are very friendly, and the atmosphere is welcoming.
- Paula (2/5): Not happy at all - Carlas as closed and had been for some time I hope I’m not going to get charged for it. Sometimes home work is good
- Colleen (4/5): Don't Do It -- Choose Anywhere But Here! - When we checked in on a Saturday evening, the restaurant was about to close FOR THE WEEKEND. Nowhere did I read prior to making my reservation that the seasonal hours had changed, excluding access to the restaurant during our stay. We were told that if we wanted anything to eat or drink, there was a gas station about three miles down the road.
The carpet in our room had a huge stain and looked like it hadn't been cleaned anytime recently. The rocking chair was also stained and gross. I was afraid to place our belongings on it let alone sit in it. The microwave was stacked precariously on top of the mini-fridge which made a loud annoying sound every time it cycled, and the table/desk in the tiny room looked as if it was going to collapse from the weight of the items on top of it. Only one of the sleeping areas was directly heated.
The cars for the restaurant workers/other guests were parked right in front of the door to my unit, so I had to haul our belongings around the other vehicles to get them into our room.
We left in the middle of the night on our first night even though we'd paid for two, and ended our visit with my MTU college student prematurely.
Finally, I was told that the fee for my dog was going to be waived because I'd told the person who greeted me that she was rescued, but when I examined my receipt afterward, I was charged anyway.
- Bruce (4/5): - Not very well up kept. Never seen the owner.
- Violet (10/5): - Nice, older style moyel lodge. Beautiful view and area. Super friendly people treat you like family. Great food in restaurant! Great value!
- KAREN (10/5): - Loved the family feel, great food and feel like home rooms.
- Susan (4/5): Unavailable owner. - The owner is unavailable to talk to. Bookings are through Hotels.com. Power went out about 4:00 AM, so with no electricity there was no water or heat. I wondered if they knew about it!?
