Guest Reviews
- Leigh (10/5): - A great place to stay, value for money, very clean and relaxing Nothing
- Danny (7/5): Very nice and friendly - Lovely staff and room and made our dog feel very welcome. Delicious breakfast Tight stairs to the 2nd floor
- Virpi (9/5): Comfortable stay in beautiful surroundings - The Gateway is conveniently located.
We had a comfortable stay, with dinner and breakfast. Food was very good. The staff accommodated our request for a candle on a dessert to mark one of our party's birthday, and even provided an extra treat for her. Everything was great.
But there was a bad smell in our bathroom (room 8 on the top floor), maybe to do with plumbing?
- Debra (9/5): - Location, decor, comfort. No The stairs. Our room was on the second floor and navigating a windy stair case with a dog was difficult.
- Jamie (8/5): -

- Margaret (7/5): Comfortable for a 1-night stay if you don’t have much luggage. - Big bedroom with armchairs and comfortable bed. Steep, narrow stairs - partly without a handrail - to get to the room (particularly difficult to navigate with luggage); noise from garden and car park as staff left between 23:30 and 24:00.
- Katie (10/5): Excellent - Well presented ,comfortable,helpful staff N/a
- James (8/5): Clean & comfortable - Clean, comfortable, we were well looked after and they were accommodating with our bicycles.
- Natalie (9/5): Perfect location, lovely rooms and very dog friendly - This hotel is in a fantastic location and very pretty. We were welcomed and the room was spacious, clean and with good facilities. We had a lovely view, massive bed and space for our dog. Our dog was also made to feel very welcome with a gift on arrival and treats throughout the stay. Breakfast was very good too amd we’d definitely return. Fantastic location to explore the Lakes. Nothing to note
- Liz (10/5): A lovely place to stay - Comfy beds.
- Marcus (9/5): - Beautiful room, well presented with a huge bathroom. Staff were friendly and professional throughout our stay. Food in the bar was of a good standard. There is quite a bit of road noise as the hotel Is close to the main junction/roundabout, so vehicles accelerate away from the junction which can be very loud. Curtains in the bedroom could be darker, lined, or there could be black out blinds as the room gets very light very early in the morning.
- heather (10/5): - Location superb,we had a wedding 10 minutes from there.Room quite small but that didnt matter, everything you needed was in the room and bathroom. Some lovely touches ,yummy couple of chocolates and biscuits.
Staff were super helpful and breakfast had an abundance of choice which you pay extra for.
Would definately recommend this hotel .
- Clare (10/5): - This is our 2nd stay here, just as good. Staff are great, food was very good. Room was very clean and comfortable, lovely decor and furnishings. Very dog friendly and exceptional value for money breakfast.
We have stayed in 8 hotels in 8 days and this one was the best overall and value for money.
- Morgan (10/5): 100% recommend - Beautiful hotel, such lovely staff, we were made to feel so welcome with out little dog. Our room was beautiful. The food in the restaurant was 10/10. Location was fab, we travelled into Kendal town and Windermere whilst we were here, only a short drive from both. will definitely be staying again!
- Pauline (10/5): Exceeded our expectations….comfortable large room with good bathroom. Staff lovely. - Lovely large room, beautifully decorated. It overlooked the car park (below) but lovely views in the distance. Plenty of parking.Heated towel rail in bathroom a lovely touch….warm towels after showering. Comfortable bed and 2 comfy armchairs. Food in restaurant/ bar was very good with quick service. Staff always polite and helpful. Exceeded our expectations and wouldnt hesitate to stay again. Nothing to dislike!
- Julie (10/5): It was the highlight of our trip! - Staff were so welcoming, we totally enjoyed the relaxing atmosphere and ambience.
Emma, Lee and all the team were great, very efficient and a credit to making the hotel keep the reputation it is known for.
Breakfast was excellent, as were all the meals we enjoyed... thank you Chef/s!
We will most certainly return to this wonderful hotel and 100% highly recommend. Nothing much.
- Honey (8/5): Nice enough hotel for a night. - Large clean bedroom with large bathroom. Position close to noisy road and big round about

Big shout out to Emma, Lee and Shaun FOH.
The Breakfast was great. The Dinner menu was great with plenty of choice, everything looked and tasted so lovely and nicely presented.
Wouldn't hesitate to return or recommend this lovely hotel, we thiroughly enjoyed our stay! Nothing major to report.

- Gillian (10/5): Would recommend! - V comfortable rooms, good service and a lovely choice for breakfast and evening meals. In a v convenient location for my travel up to Scotland as well as being close to many parts of the Lake District. I will definitely be back! No comments
- k (9/5): fabulous - style and location feel breakfast could’ve been better
- Sarah (8/5): Very friendly and lovely goodie bag for the dogs - Clean and good situation Quite small room

- Jason (9/5): Highly recommended for a weekend break, 100% will stay again. - Great room, Great bar and restaurant.
Food was amazing with a good menu. Nothing I didn’t like tbh.
- Lisa (7/5): -
- Stephen (9/5): Quiet location and great value breakfast. - Great breakfast at a very reasonable price. Nothing.
- Jodie (8/5): -
- Mark (9/5): -
- Hannah (7/5): - The staff were friendly and helpful, Our room was clean and the bed was comfortable. Location is very remote to go for a walk but ideal for driving as it's in the middle of each direction to kendal or windermere. . The stairs to the room were very narrow and winding, and we had two dogs. therefore, trying to get up with our luggage and dogs on leads was near impossible.
- karitson (10/5): Beautiful hotel - Loved the warm comfy room and friendly helpful
staff. Beautifully decorated. Nothing
- Kim (6/5): - The hotel itself was lovely and the restaurant was also good. We specifically booked 2 twin rooms and 1 double room all the rooms had double beds we had to ask them to separate them. Which they did and left the beds unmade with the linen folded at the bottom. Sheets were torn.
- Maria (9/5): -
- Wilson (9/5): Fantastic - The location was beautiful. The breakfast was very excellent No complaints at all
- Richard (9/5): VERY ENJOYABLE AND WOULD STAY AGAIN. - CLEAN.
GREETED BY A LOVELY LADY - ALL THE STAFF WE MET WERE PLEASANT, CURTEOUS AND HELPFUL.
THE FOOD WAS EXCELLENT AND A REASONABLE PRICE.
THE VIEW FROM THE OUTSIDE TERRACE WAS STUNNING - ENJOYED OUR NIGHTCAP SAT THERE. THE ROOM WAS A TIGHT FIT FOR TWO PEOPLE.
- Alison (9/5): -
- Beenish (10/5): My family loved the place and the space and rooms were very cozy and spacious. - Location was stunning, very peaceful and quiet environment If pets are not allowed, especially dogs then it's an ideal place to stay for longer period of time. It's a small hotel and rooms are very close to each other so pets are the biggest disturbance in my opinion. The next door guest's dog kept barking the whole night and we couldn't sleep well.
- Paul (9/5): Very good stay. - Nice room and perfect surroundings
- KERRY (6/5): Ok - Room clean Bed very uncomfortable which affected sleep.
- Christine (8/5): Would highly recommend - Beautiful hotel in a wonderful location. The restaurant had delicious food and the staff were very helpful and friendly. nothing
- Birchall (8/5): Good location, good value. -
- Gill (8/5): Relaxing stay and would book again. - We had a warm welcome. Beautiful views Lovely complimentary toiletry products. Nice breakfast. Previous guests sanitary towels left in the toilet bin. Staff were very apologetic when I let them know. There was a cut off time for ordering the evening meal which would have been helpful if front of house staff had warned us about. Appreciate the chef going out their way to make us a meal in the end (albeit over cooked)
- Jason (8/5): -
- Joanna (9/5): - When a hotel says it's dog friendly, this fits the bill.
- Stewart (10/5): -
- Amit (9/5): -
- David (10/5): -
- David (8/5): Clean, comfortable and very friendly staff - Staff were very friendly, super friendly to dogs and very accommodating when my wife wasn’t feeling well and we had to cancel breakfast. Room was spotless and decorated to a high standard and the bed was very comfortable. Dinner at the hotel was great and the dining bar area was very cosy on a cold winter night. We stayed in room 8, right at the top of the building and apart from a low hum of traffic from the main road, it was very quiet and relaxing. Very steep winding steps up to the rooms at the top of the building. Not suitable for anyone with walking disabilities or heavy suitcases. Other levels were fine.
- Sarah (8/5): -
- Max (10/5): Great stay at the Gateway really enjoyed from start to finish. - Great stay at the gateway.
Amazing facilities in room - lovely night away!
- Keith (8/5): Once again good, we understand the lack of flowing water was out of their control, staff on shift were exceptional - We know it well, location and vibe are good The staff that were there were superb, however there just wasn’t enough of them
2 for an evening service for food/bar on NYE wasn’t ideal
- Bradley (10/5): Short stop over for the night so easy to get to and nice and quite outside Windermere. Rooms were great size and clean. - Beautiful rooms and food was great! Nothing
- Jessica (8/5): Brilliant dog friendly stay, would recommend - The staff were extremely accommodating. The room was a fantastic size with a very large comfortable bed. The bathroom was newly renovated. The food was very good too! We also appreciated being able to have our dog with us and he appreciated the welcome pack! N/A
- Subodh (8/5): -
- Ben (10/5): mango pork burger - Great quiet dog friendly hotel with exceptional mango pork burger all good chief
- Jackson (7/5): Great stay over the Christmas period food was excellent but we found some of the staff were lovely but unfortunately som - Unique rooms all nicely decorated Our room was quiet small
- frances (1/5): Discourteous as no contact after several messages sent. - I contacted the property to advise that I had to cancel due to my husband not able to manage the stairs due to illness. I asked if s refund could be considered even though it was non refundable. They did not get back to me after several messages that I sent to them. Very rude and unprofessional.
- Nicola (10/5): -
- Joseph (8/5): -
- Jacqueline (10/5): Great stay, warm and friendly. Breakfast was good value - It was a lovely friendly hotel. Staff were very attentive. There were a few minor things if I were being picky, light bulbs in bedside lamps were different. 1 was a warm light, other was a cool one. Lamps were also in my opinion too large for the bedside tables
- Martin (9/5): One night stay at The Gateway - First overnight stay after many visits for lunch down the years, and I was impressed with the quality of my room.
All staff were friendly and helpful.
Plenty of parking spaces and lovely views of the fells from the breakfast dining area.
Wide variety of breakfast options and good value for money. Not applicable
- Anthony (9/5): -
- Ali (9/5): A family run boutique residence that cares for you, the local community and all its staff with equal amounts of love - The staff are excellent, supportive kind and helpful. This a small boutique hotel of 8 rooms, the family are highly involved in the local community,, knowing that keeping high quality establishments like this going is so important to support the influx of people into the area. They are so invested in the area they also support 3 local pubs to stay running because they know how important having a focal place for locals
to meet and talk is for every ones mental
health. Their love and care for their guests and the local community runs so deep that one of the family members works on call from10pm - 6pm with the local amulbance service, as well as being the emergency out of hours call out person for this hotell if should need help with a genuine emergency. So when you come to The Gateway you are not just getting excellent care, facilities and service but you are contributing to the local community and becoming part of its family for you stay here A warm welcoming space to relax
- DAVID (6/5): - ROOM COLD
- Peter (9/5): -
- Gail (9/5): - Great staff. Handle location with great road links. Clean, very comfortable and interesting features to the property. Good food. Excellent in every respect. Dining area was a little cold - but had lovely panoramic windows - so I guess you can’t easily have both.
- James (8/5): Good value for money ,nice place to stay ,great location - Great location . Bedroom was small with a big bed in it!
- Patrick (7/5): Definitely a good option for dog owners - Popular eating place with locals is always a good sign. Very good bed. Really nice touch with pet hamper. The stairs up to the room are quite steep and narrow. The pricing of breakfast is a little confusing. Just one all in price might be better.
- Jonathan (8/5): -
- Maartje (9/5): - Good and cosy bar/restaurant.
- David (10/5): Peaceful , enjoyable with excellent staff - Cosy beautiful hotel Nothing
- Jackie (10/5): -
- Natasha (6/5): Not a warm welcome - The hotel was situated in a good location, the food was lovely in the restaurant. Upon of arrival the front of house lady wasn’t very warming and fairly abrupt when we were asking basic questions. Almost like we were a hindrance. The stairs were abit of a nightmare with luggage as we were on the very top floor. There were dead flies all over the window inside the hotel which could have been cleaned off, we didn’t feel like we should mention it due to the unpleasant front of house lady but we did take photos which are attached.
- Andy (10/5): -
- konstantinos (8/5): -
- Gary (7/5): - Clean & tidy, great decor, amazing food, good beers, great location. Cold room, heating wasn’t on in the room, room wasn’t tended to during our stay so tea, coffee, biscuits weren’t replenished.
Good far outweighed these negative comments
- Carol (9/5): Lovely, relaxing stay. - Beautiful room, they have thought of everything!
- edith (10/5): - L'endroit fantastique, la décoration, le personnel.
- Bryan (8/5): - Location good room a little bit small although well presented
Unable to see at 3.30am in car park taking dog out for walk no outside lighting at all
Staff 100% doggy gifts a bonus well thought out prefer breakfast to be inclusive of package deal Lack of lighting outside property
- Amanda (8/5): -
- wesley (10/5): - Friendly staff, amazing food
- Debbie (8/5): - Lovely room nice staff. Chicken ham and leek pie delicious but huge. Second floor room 8 staircase very very steep and awkward. Not for anyone with mobility issues of any sort. Even the Labrador had difficulty going up and down. Room was lovely.
- Modelomel (8/5): Extremely convenient stopover , lovely staff, excellent restaurant and comfortable beds. - excellent evening meal, reasonably priced.
- helen (9/5): -
