Guest Reviews
- Liesa (9/5): - Beautiful hotel full of character and parts designed by Geoffrey Bawa. Grounds immaculate with beach access. Lovely staff and great restaurant. Bathroom dark, bed a bit hard.
- Kathryn (8/5): Very relaxing comfortable stay - Quiet location near the beach with good pool, nice food and friendly efficient service Train noise all night
- Rob (10/5): The staff were amazing! They could not have been more helpful or polite. We had a wonderful stay and would not hesitate - A beautifully maintained property with stunning swimming pool, extensive grounds and lovely gardens. The food and service provided by every staff member was outstanding! Nothing
- Denise (9/5): As a last stop in Sri Lanka we found Club Villa to be the perfect spot. Villages close &easy accessibility to other - The gardens were exceptionally well kept.
The staff were always polite & charming. Always helpful & would do everything with grace & a genuine desire to please. I couldn’t have been more delighted. Nothing really. Our room was a little small & we had no view of the gardens, but comfortable & well kept.
- Clare (10/5): -
- Julia (10/5): Tranquil and beautiful - Set in beautiful and beautifully maintained grounds, Club Villa is a charming and comfortable place to stay. Designed by famous architect Geoffrey Bawa, the property remains true to his ideals of natural materials used simply to complement nature and include Sri Lankan culture inside and out. The staff are fantastic: very friendly and offer superb service. The food at the restaurant was excellent, so much so that we barely ventured further in the five glorious nights we stayed there.
- Sebastiano (10/5): Vintage Villa with great garden - The Villa has a vintage feeling and the garden is incredibly well kept. Location is great, 2 minutes from the beach.
It felt like having a private resort for ourselves.
Staff was really friendly and accomodating. Nothing
- Petra (8/5): -
- Asuka (10/5): Perfect vacation - We had a perfect stay! Location, room, breakfast, pool, staff, everything was really great! This is one of the few places that I would like to go back!
- Hendrikus (8/5): - nice architecture
beautifull garden.
beach nearby.
good location chlorine in swimming pool.
confusing final settlement.
missing bedside cabinet and bedside lamp.
- Philippa (9/5): Lovely peaceful, comfortable and relaxing hotel with lovely pool, right on the beach. Good food and great staff. - We have stayed at Club Villa before and it is a delight. Set in beautiful gardens right next to the beach with lovely comfortable rooms, great beds, really friendly and helpful staff, good food and really relaxing peaceful too. A real haven to come back to after a day out. Love the fact that the trains go right through the garden and it’s fun to wander down the railway track to other bars and beaches. Set down a quiet lane, It’s easy to get tuk-tuks right outside the door. Nothing
- Charlotte (9/5): -
- Nuala (10/5): very luxurious stay - Access to fabulous beach, such a well maintained property, staff were very helpful, food was glorious There was nothing to dislike
- Ilka (9/5): - top service, ausgesprochen freundliches personal, sehr schönes gebäude (architektur), toller garten, sehr gutes frühstück
- JANICE (10/5): An idyllic place to stay. We would definitely recommend a stay here and, if we ever return to Sri Lanka, would love to g - The hotel and grounds were so beautiful. The pool was great and the staff were amazing. They happily moved Sun loungers into the shade under the trees for us. We enjoyed watching the trains come past and they didn’t keep us awake. Our room was spacious with a very comfortable bed and the best shower we’ve ever had. The food in the restaurant was excellent, we enjoyed every meal we had. Our only very small criticism is that we were only given 2 small bottles of water a day. In very hot weather this just wasn’t enough, especially when we also needed to use it for cleaning our teeth.
We felt it was a shame that there were no sun loungers or bar on the beach. Several of the nearby hotels provided these and it would have been nice to relax and watch the sea. So saying, a couple of minutes walk and we could sit and have a drink and watch the waves at a nearby hotel.
- Andrea (Autorin "Pixie") (10/5): Living like Geoffrey Bawa - Amazing. Awesome. Beautiful. Laid back. Upon arrival we felt like set back in time. Picturesque scenery opened to us from our balcony view to the pool on the left, the beach in front, walking over the rails of the still going railway of Sri Lanka, and to our right side squirrels, parrots and birds of all colours on trees as old as the building and a perfect shaped cultivated lawn. Feeling like early 1900 in time when Europeans still tried to conquer this part of the world instead of enjoying it, like I do nowadays, eating like a goddess in France, still sitting at one of the most beautiful beach stretches Sri Lanka has to offer. In walking distance of the town called Bentota, one of the prettier ones.
Geoffrey Bawa, the architect of this 18 room (including 7 Suites) house knew about aesthetic, Bohemian, Hedonistic lifestyle. I admit it saddens me not being able to share a cup of tea with good old Geoffrey because he lived from 1919 until 2003. Only the good ones.....
Don't miss to walk and sleep in the walls created by a genius mind. Maybe the spirit will hop to you. Who knows it might blow your mind or lighten it up? Dare to take the risk? Guess you can only win, nothing to loose.

- Tamburrino (6/5): - Lage ist gut.und schone
Garten sehr schon Zimmer sehr dunkle
- patrick (10/5): - So peaceful and wonderful staff Nothing
- Barbara (8/5): -
- Paul (8/5): A great stay in a relaxing resort. Beautiful gardens and pool. - Bawa design. Landscaping and pool were great. The food was great Bathrooms in desperate need of upgrade.
- Catherine (10/5): Amazing stay in this beautiful place - The historic property was set in the most amazing gardens and the beautiful Geoffrey Bawa bungalow was lovingly restored and kept Setting and facilities
- Suzanne (9/5): -
- Michael (10/5): - Everything Beds were very hard
- Frank (10/5): Immer wieder gerne.
- Connie (10/5): -
- Graham (9/5): Amazing beach side hotel with colonial feel - Amazing Gardens, stunning swimming pool, fantastic breakfast, nice old colonial hotel The room we had on the second floor was like going back in time, however I do prefer working plumbing. The staff were amazing but trying to book a spa appointment was difficult as not always on site called in when needed and not clear what hours or when she would be available
- chandrakant (6/5): Average stay - Nice property good location Mattress were just not good . very hard spring mattresses. For double bed even length of mattress was short and gap was filled by inserting a round pillow. Edges of mattress was not smooth . Good variety at restaurant quite limited.
- Lang (9/5): Very good and we hope to return - Charming artefacts and small number of rooms
Excellent attentive staff Maybe some opportunity to visit nearby beach
Some boisterous youngsters dominating pool without staff asking them to calm down and with disregarding parents
- Deep (6/5): -
- KOMIE (10/5): -
- RUTH (10/5): Super stay, very relaxing - Everything! Beautiful colonial stay with gorgeous manicured gardens / grounds Nothing
- Nicola (10/5): Bliss. I want to return many times - It is perfection. Beautiful buildings with stylish /interesting interiors. Fabulous service, and such friendly staff. Lovely pool. Good food. Peaceful! No wonder many guests are regulars. Lots of mosquito but staff do their best to reduce their access to human flesh- sprays, anti mozzie coils, and all encompassing netting around the beds.
- Mika (8/5): -
- Vineet (9/5): -
- Dilip (4/5): - Nice garden and pool, food is good The rooms are quite compact and urgently need refurbishment. For a property that positions itself as an upscale resort, the overall condition felt outdated and below expectations.
What was most disappointing was the refusal to provide drinking water on the day of check-out. Basic amenities like this should never be withheld, especially at a premium hotel. When I raised the issue and mentioned my previous positive experiences in the country, the manager responded by asking how much I paid for the room — an unprofessional and unnecessary remark.
A resort at this level should prioritise consistent service and guest comfort. It’s about maintaining the standards expected from a high-end property.
- Nilamuni (10/5): Excellent - Beautiful property. A masterpiece by Bawa. Loved everything about it. Staff were excellent. Will definitely stay again. If I can be really picky, Id say to give a face lift to the front car park and entrance.
- Aleksandra (10/5): -
- Julie (10/5): Elegant, peaceful place to stay where you are treated with utmost care and attention. Perfect! - We didn’t just like, we LOVED staying at Club Villa. We stayed for a week and could have stayed longer.
The building was elegant with touches of history. The gardens were beautiful and the pool meticulously maintained.
The beach was at the end of the garden over the railway tracks. From there you could walk for miles along the sand on the beautiful beach.
Housekeeping was excellent, rooms serviced daily, bed turned down in the evening. We were very well looked after.
The breakfast was excellent, enough to keep you fuelled for the day. We also took dinner at the restaurant which had a great range of options- Sri Lankan and Western. The food was excellent!
The staff learned our routines and preferences and made us feel so much at home.
Despite the cyclonic weather we experienced at the end of the week, we felt safe and cared for. They worked so hard to make sure that there was no inconvenience for guests.
We were very sad to leave. We will certainly visit again. There was nothing to dislike!
- Alan (10/5): As good as ever, we will be back - Our favourite place to stay. Beautiful gardens, pool, lovely food.
- Tem123 (10/5): -
- Misha (10/5): Will stay again. - Good location, aesthetic property, rustic and comfoetable rooms, homely and tastey food. I think it was perfect for me.
- sean (10/5): A wonderful hotel friendly staff extraordinary views - Fantastic views
- Manjir (10/5): This stay will stay in my heart till I breathe. - Everything went well beyond my expectation. Staff were immensely helpful. I was mesmerized with the architecture, cleanliness and the comfort.
Breakfast was delicious, healthy and neatly spread. Lunch and dinner were also wonderfully served. Ice creams were so nice!
It was a wonderful experience . Nothing could have been better than what we received here.
- Annabel (10/5): -
- Chris and Jen (10/5): Tranquil, relaxing garden & superb hotel close to beach. - Fortunate to be able to stay in an affordable Geoffrey Bawa designed Villa. Enjoyed relaxing in the tranquil gardens with the added bonus of complimentary cups of tea and cake brought out to us by Randive. Had a delicious meal in the Villa restaurant with fabulous service from Travic Brinsly and Randive. Lovely room and the ‘turn down’ on our bed was a nice unexpected touch. We were fortunate to be the only guests staying, however all the services were still readily available. Would definitely stay again!!
- Mary (10/5): Such a great hotel, we were so fortunate to have the opportunity to stay there. - Club Villa was such a beautiful place to stay! We stayed there for 2 days at the end of a busy trip travelling around Sri Lanka and we needed rest and relaxation!
Everything about it was exceptional - best shower, comfortable spacious room! We loved the gardens and pool! The food was one of the best that we had in Sri Lanka! And above all the staff were so helpful and couldn’t do enough for us, we thank them very much. Wish we had another day or two. Mary & Sean (Ireland)

- Olav (9/5): -
- Geoffrey (10/5): Lovely rooms in a superb garden setting. - Breakfast was delicious and we had a wonderful room. There were lovely gardens leading over the railway to the beach with a good pool. Dinner in the evening was good. Nothing

- Margaret (9/5): Wish we could have stayed longer - Lovely peaceful environment. Friendly staff. Relaxing pool. Good food.
- George (10/5): Great place to relax - Staff warm attentive
Great menu
Fab pool Very close to the beach
- Natasha (8/5): Very good - Walking distance to the beach made it a special location but i would have preferred if it had place to do youga or meditation. No place to do youga or meditation
- Ian (9/5): A unique and charming place not to be missed - The stylish architecture, the peaceful atmosphere and the proximity to the amazing beach. Nothing
- Ragini (8/5): Very good -
- Phillip (9/5): Perfect 3 days to conclude our 3 week trip in Sri Lanka. We'll visit here again if we make it back - Excellent location , direct access to Beach (across railway line) and very nice pool and grounds to enjoy onsite.
- Andrew (10/5): Exceptional -
- Olivia (10/5): - Beautiful building and grounds leading across the railway line to the beach; comfortable room.
- Delyth (8/5): Very good -
- Belinda (10/5): stunning boutique and quirky property - this was a last minute booking, and we loved it so much !!! the place was superb, so peaceful, comfortable and loved the design aesthetic. It was a real treat to stay in a Bawa designed property. The garden and pool area was lovely and the restaurant and all the staff did a wonderful job. I can't think of anything.WIshed we had stayed longer.
- Yoram (10/5): Exceptional -
- Deepak (10/5): Exceptional - Really nice Property. Nice rooms and great food. Staff go out their way to help you out.
Amazing train that passes every 20 minutes when you’re having a swim
- Thelki (10/5): Really a special place giving a colonial tropical taste of beautiful Sri Lanka - It really felt like going back in time; beautifully decorated by Geoffrey Bawa giving the typical tropical movement vibe. Very tranquil place, the garden is stunning, breakfast delicious and you have the luxury of the swimming pool and just a 5 minute walk away also the quiet beach. The train running through the garden only every once in a while makes it extra special. The noise never bothered me while I am a light sleeper (as of midnight until +/- 05:00 the train doesn't pas by anymore anyway). There are many guests who have been coming back for years. That already says enough. The staff is incredibly friendly. Absolutely loved it here, thank you for this special experience and truly hope to come back in the future! The temperature of the swimming pool is quite warm. But can imagine it is difficult to cool properly with the high temperatures during summer.
- Patrick (9/5): Brilliant - Location
Very peaceful
Great pool and gardens
Great access to the beach
Great staff Next door hotel had a wedding and music played until 3.00am on final night
- Astrid (10/5): Exceptional -
- Boswall (10/5): Beautiful Bawa design and lovely staff -
- Ruth (9/5): Superb - The hotel is charming with a tropical, colonial feel. The rooms were spacious and offered a comfortable bed and an outside balcony. We enjoyed lounging around by the pool area and walked across to the beach daily. The hotel has only a small number of rooms, making it an ideal place for rest and relaxation. The staff were all very friendly and helpful and the restaurant served authentic Sri Lankan cuisine. Location, price and facilities were all very good.
- Christopher (7/5): Attractive property and setting with friendly staff and excellent pool and location. A little overpriced - Staff were excellent. Pool and garden exceptional. Location next to beach very good Seating area undercover was dark and uninviting and deserted. Outside seating area was nice during day but not set up for evening with mosquitoes.
Food and menu were average considering the villa price. Bathroom very small
- Geoffrey (10/5): We loved absolutely everything about our stay. - We took all our meals at Club Villa during our 3 day stay which were delicious and beautifully served by the ever attentive staff in a peaceful and elegant dining area adjacent to the stunning garden. The immaculate pool is in the garden where towels were provided, also available if you want to go to the beach a few minutes walk beyond the garden and railway track. Our room was beautifully furnished in the Dutch colonial style, with a fabulous view of the garden. Indeed we loved being immersed in the fabulous architecture and design of the hotel by Geoffrey Bawa, really a special place to relish with delightful surprises to see around every corner. Nothing, as Club Villa exceeded our expectations in every way - our only regret was having to leave.
- Norma (10/5): Exceptional - We had an exceptional stay at Club Villa. It is the most beautiful historical property, set in lush green gardens, with a beautiful pool to laze your day away. Our room had so much character and the terrace overlooking the garden was perfect. Both breakfast and supper were especially good. It was a couple of minute stroll down to a white, fine sand beach. All in all perfect. That we only stayed one night.
- Tony (9/5): One of the best beach villas that we have stayed in. - Exceptional grounds and garden setting. The Bawa architecture sets it apart from other villas.
Easy access to one of the best beaches that we visited in Sri Lanka. The choice of half board arrangements would have been helpful.
- Lorna (10/5): A joy from start to finish. - This is an exquisitely appointed and delightful hotel. Fascinating architectural history. We loved it. Even the trains at the bottom of the garden!
- Pramod (10/5): Loved it!!! Must visit. One of the top rated locations of Bentota - Beautiful location and excellent property!! Value for money! Great services and an amazing place to come and relax Nothing. There is nothing to not like about this place
- Ranil (8/5): Very good -
- Tina (9/5): This place is a real gem - the garden and pool were fabulous, room comfortable - food delicious - Rooms were lovely. Garden was fabulous, and loved the walk crossing the railway line to the beach. Food was exceptional. Whilst the lighting in the rooms is no doubt designed for a gentle relaxing mood, the bedside lights were too dim to read comfortably by, which was disappointing
- Victoria (10/5): Perfect hotel for a relaxing stay - This is one of my all time favourite hotels and I’ve stayed here a few times. This time I enjoyed a 5 night stay. It’s a beautiful laid back Geoffrey Bawa designed property and I love the decor and ambience. The gardens are beautiful and the immaculately cared for 25m pool is perfect for both lap swimming and lounging - kudos to the pool man who is always there and clearly loves his pool. The long beach is a short walk across the train tracks (the train never disturbed me and I barely noticed it after the first day or so). Housekeeping is excellent and I always enjoyed the delicious breakfasts. I look forward to returning! Not much - the dinners could have been better but were reasonably priced.
- Owen (10/5): Wonderful stay in a beautiful place - Superb, a wonderful experience from the minute you walk in the door. Wonderful staff, excellent food beautiful grounds and architecture. Nothing
- Kaberi (9/5): Superb - We were upgraded to the club suite, which was amazing and so spacious. The bathroom was huge and the room was so comfortable. The staff were super helpful and went over and beyond. The bathroom had a slight smell and felt a little outdated but it was quite minor and tolerable.
- Dawn (10/5): Beautiful - Beautiful Geoffrey Bowa- designed boutique hotel set in a beautifully tended garden. This is our second stay & it didnt disappoint. The staff remembered us after 4 years! Very good service, excellent breakfasts & evening meal. There is a train line running along the bottom of the garden and the train clanks along it every hour or so. We loved the quirkiness of it. Its a gorgeous, peaceful sanctuary. Beautiful beach is just over the railway line. There are bars along the beach to the left for a lunchtime wander & food, and also great places to eat along the beach to the right in Bentota (or short tuk-tuk ride). I would happily come back here anytime!
- Fiona (8/5): Relaxing 24h - The feeling of being on a private property
Lovely garden and pool and I loved the unique crossing to the beach, over the train tracks Bathrooms need revamping and shower area could use some scrubbing with bleach. Our sink did not drain properly.
- Vivek (10/5): Exceptional -
