Guest Reviews
- Jayvibes (9/5): Highly recommend and personalised attention to all detail. Great breakfast also included. - Excellent Hotel chain. Great attention to detail. Very helpful staff. Great menu and food was exceptional. No QR code ordering which seems prolific and results in lower standards. This is my third stay at Bel and the Dragon and wouldn’t hesitate to return. Keep up the great work Nothing
- Tony (9/5): Great stay - All very good really, staff were all very pleasant and welcoming from arrival through to departure. The room was not huge but had character and was very comfortable, very large bed. Bathroom good size, hot tap needs a new washer though. Shower was very good. Breakfast excellent especially the bacon. Evening meal was good. Nothing really, would happily stay here again

- Matt_dad (10/5): - Lovely, characterful inn. The rooms aren't huge but the facilities and little touches are excellent. We only stayed one night for a nearby family event but it's the kind of place we wished we were staying longer to make more use of the facilities such as the lovely beer garden, shared drawing room with games and drinks and the breakfast was fantastic with great service and lots of unusual choices alongside a classic full English. Hope to stay again if we have the opportunity. Honestly nothing

- Dan (10/5): Quality stay for an excellent price - Quality of room, complimentary drinks, wonderful breakfast. Staff were attentive and welcoming Little noisy as we were in the room above the bar, but it is an old building so not unexpected. Didn’t cause any issues at all for us

Just felt the hotel went that extra mile to make our stay as good as they could. Would highly recommend.

- Mnico3 (10/5): Absolute Gem - I booked this room for 1 night after visiting highclere castle. This turned out to be a great decision. What we found was a cosy and friendly country pub with great rooms and amenities. From the check in to check out the staff were all friendly and efficient and actually seemed to be enjoying their work. The room itself was amazing. The furnishing were all very cute and of quality. The added touches like the bottled water and the complimentary sloe gin were very nice. Add to that a lovely little drawing room with sofas , complimentary whiskey and books and magazines was a great touch. We had an afternoon tea so come to our evening meal we went for several small plates. All of which were amazing. Breakfast again was really good. Eggs Benedict was my option while my wife had the full English. Both excellent. I don’t normally write reviews and I stay away a lot. But this place deserved a mention for the excellent touches and service it provides. Thank you.

- Nathan (10/5): The best stay we have had anywhere - This stay was the nearest we have had to perfect and we have stayed at a lot of places , the food was amazing , the room spotless and clean , the snug area was lovely we just spent the evening chilling in there , the staff were super friendly Nothing
- Angela (9/5): From start to finish we were treated very well by the staff and really enjoyed our stay. - The room was spotless and had everything that you could need in terms of towels and toiletries, tea and coffee, water, even sloe gin to try! There was a residents only lounge with complementary whisky and board games/books/magazines. We had a lovely meal in the restaurant which had a very varied menu, not the usual pub grub. There were very few plug points and no USB points to charge phones/ipads.
- Jonathan (10/5): - Everything: the building; the room with wooden beams; the complimentary drinks in the room and the lovely guest lounge. The staff were welcoming and helpful. We will stay here again.
- Thomas (9/5): -

Served hot and no long waits
Cocktails very good value
Also whiskey and sloe gin free in your room.
Cozy little upstairs lounge with board games and cards if wanted again free whiskey tipple if wanted (lovely touch)
Room was warm and comfortable fabulous toiletries.. modern en suite and spotlessly clean. Shower was very good.
Tv and a radio, hairdryer good quality one too.
Definately 10/10 for everything hope to stay here again
- Ross (10/5): Comfortable and so well looked after. - The staff are amazing Nothing
- Michael (8/5): Fully met our expectations and very convenient for our visit to Newbury Racecourse - We were impressed by the warm welcome and the service overall - arrival, dinner, breakfast. The rooms are on the small side but comfortable and quite well equipped. The food was good (especially the Snacks menu at dinner) and fresh. The wine list was especially ambitious and fairly priced Bel and the Dragon delivers on the claims in their website so no complaints!
- Roy (9/5): - The accommodation was clean and the staff were very friendly.
- Claire (10/5): Felt very spoilt, beautiful building, great staff. - Had lots of character, the staff were so very helpful and friendly, complimentary slo gin and whisky. Very enjoyable stay. N/a

- Patricia (5/5): It's OK parking a big problem. - Staff were lovely rooms great nice and comfy. Breakfast on 2 mornings was nice . Drinks very expensive evening menue poor and expensive. Couldn't get a nice cup of tea went onto coffee . The pain problem was the parking carpark always full and had to park on the road .
- Jennifer (10/5): Wonderful - Everything No parking spaces on arrival so had to park on another car park and walk with our luggage in the rain

- Darren (8/5): -
- edwin (8/5): Great overnight stay, excellent food, great staff and parking - Enjoyable stay in a well appointed room, Evening meal was excellent, as were all of the staff. The room was very cold on arrival and only had a small electric panel heater. The room warmed up by nighttime but would be better to be greeted by a warm room on arrival on a cold evening.
- Fay (10/5): Will find an excuse to go back . 😀 - Gorgeous building. Not a straight line anywhere. Fab facilities. Stunning guest chill area with complimentary spirits. Most comfortable bed & pillows. Can’t recommend enough. Forgot to mention the fabulous breakfast &lovely staff.
- Dr_Marc_B (8/5): Great place to stay - Nice overnight in a gorgeous old building. Very nice staff. Complimentary whiskey in an upstairs lounge. Great sleep. Nice breakfast.
- Sorrel (10/5): -
- JGlover (8/5): - The upstairs residents' lounge with complimentary whisky! Access to Highclere excellent. Very good evening meal and breakfast Room was small and rather tired but otherwise clean and acceptable for one night.
- suewK6002ID (10/5): Lovely building and ambience - Today was my second visit to Bel and The Dragon. We were served by the lovely Chanya who was attentive but not over the top. She was very helpful. The food is top quality, really special. The building has a wonderful ambience with beams and a roaring fire. It isn't cheap here but this place is special and the food was incredible. Parking can be a bit of an issue but you can park on the road.
- John (9/5): Friendly staff, comfy room, great food - On arrival, we were greeted by friendly staff. Our room was comfortable, and the facilities for guests were excellent. The food and the service at dinner were excellent as was breakfast the following morning. Nothing
- Hood (9/5): - Very comfortable room with excellent shower.
Breakfast and main meal were beautifully cooked.
- Bethany (10/5): -
- sheils (10/5): - Family Wedding staff and accommodation at the Bel was excellent N/A
- ROBERT (10/5): Great stay would definitely return and recommend - Very friendly helpful staff. Lovely room with comfortable bed and bed linen. Everything was high quality from the tea bags in the room to the lovely dinner and breakfast.
We needed to stay because a relative was in hospital in Basingstoke so it was a lovely haven for the night between visits. Nothing, all was great especially staff both in the evening and in the morning they couldn't have been more friendly and helpful
- Lisa (10/5): -
- Philip (8/5): Lovely character hotel with comfortable rooms. - Room and breakfast both matched expectations. Couldn't fault either. Restaurant is a bit overpriced. Food good but portions very small.
- Jill Wood (8/5): -
- Craig (9/5): -
- PHILIP (6/5): -
- Marion (10/5): Arrangeovernight stay to meet up with a friend and it all worked perfectly, thanks to this excell - Lovely friendly staff, nothing too much trouble, from making changes to room specification to accommodate disability before arrival to cheery housekeeping staff offering help with luggage.
Cosy, comfortable atmosphere.
I'm already recommending a stay to friends... The local refuse lorry not arriving at 5am ... seriously, no improvement necessary
- Stacey (9/5): - The room was lovely and quirky, the food quality was really good. Intimate venue It is a small carpark.
- Paul (9/5): Comfort and welcoming with great food. - The greeting by the reception staff was very welcoming. The room was great with a surprise welcome drink and we were given a tour of the facilities including a superb lounge complete with other tipples. We had a fabulous evening meal and a sumptuous breakfast. All the staff were welcoming and helpful.
- Anna (9/5): Great country pub - Lovely hotel. Very comfortable and clean. Great staff and excellent breakfast.
- R (7/5): - Clean room pump or machine was going on and off all night and kept me awake
- Ralf (10/5): Perfekt! - Das war ein rundherum gelungener Kurzaufenthalt von zwei Nächten. Es stimmte einfach alles. Zimmer, Frühstück, Restaurant, Bar, Service, Preise ... die Umgebung. Mir fällt dazu nichts ein.
- Dennis (10/5): -
- David (8/5): A comfortable stay in a convenient location with a good restaurant and friendly service. - Although Kingsclare does not have much in the way of facilities, it is well placed to explore the local area provided you have your own transport. The hotel restaurant serves good food in the evening and excellent breakfasts. One of the features of such an old building is the varying room sizes. The bedroom was quite small - difficult to place two suitcases but the bathroom was a nice size.
- Sabine (9/5): -
- Thepottersman (10/5): A 400 year old building full of character, service second to none, a residents only lounge and more! What's not to love? - What an incredible place! The room was lovely and spotless, the bed super comfy and breakfast delicious ... but it's the extra special touches and extra special team there that takes this to another level!!
There's free drinks on arrival in your bedroom, a very comfortable residents only lounge with more complimentary drinks (see the pics). That was a huge bonus and the staff were brilliant!
We were struggling to get a taxi to Highclare Castle so the manager Darren stepped in to make sure we were able to get there and back.
The team have a strong family vibe about them and we left feeling as though we'd stayed with friends - A fabulous stay!!
- Steven (10/5): Service second to none, and a residents lounge! - What an incredible place! The room was lovely and spotless and the bed super comfy and breakfast delicious ... but it's the extra special touches and extra special team there that takes this to another level!!
There's free drinks in your bedroom, a very comfortable residents only lounge with more complimentary drinks (as you can see in the pics). That was a huge bonus and the staff were brilliant!
We were struggling to get a taxi to Highclare Castle so the manager Darren stepped in to make arrangements for us to get there.
The team have a lovely family like vibe about them and we left feeling as though we'd stayed with friends!
- Jonathan (10/5): - A really nice overnight stay and dinner at The Swan / Bel and Dragon. The building is delightful - full of beams and historical atmosphere but very well maintained. The bar was certainly very well patronised and appears popular with locals while most of the 9 rooms appeared to be occupied, based on the numbers at breakfast. We had a good evening meal and an excellent breakfast with a wide range of choice. Nice touches were the residents-only sitting room, which is a lovely large room with a vaulted beamed ceiling and a decanter of whisky available for a complimentary nigh-cap! Would certainly stay there again if in the area.
- Tamara Barnett (10/5): - Warm welcome when we arrived and checked in swiftly. Excellent room with a view of the chefs garden. Very comfortable bed and excellent rainfall shower. Lovely add extra with the complimentary slow Gin in our room plus the whiskey in the guest lounge. We had a fabulous meal in the restaurant, with a very good drinks menu to boot. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will definitely look to book again. The pubs car park was full when we arrived, which was slightly inconvenient. However, there was a free carpark up the road, which was only a min walk away.
- Stephen (8/5): Excelllent breakfast…..measure of Sloe Gin left in room to sample and measures of whisky in sitting room all free of cha - Lovely old fashioned pub. Huge effort to provide the best experience both in the restaurant and room…..also including a sitting room for residents. Tightish room but only to be expected given the age.
- June (6/5): - Room cleanliness. Comfortable bed. Bedroom basic. Barely enough room to get into the bed on one side. No kettle. Just not what we were expecting. What clothes hanging facilities there were were hanging above the perculator. One of the bedroom side lights kept flickering.
- GillXc (10/5): Great place for short stay. - Very friendly staff, clean and comfortable room, super breakfast.i had the dippy eggs with marmite soldiers. My husband had scrambled eggs and mushrooms. It was all freshly cooked for us. They had left some drinks in the room for us quite unsolicited. It is very close to HighClere Castle. Can’t recommend highly enough.
- Rothwell (8/5): A most pleasurable stay. Staff were very helpful and polite. - Well presented and a lot of thought gone into the finishing touches. Noise from down stairs in the bar could be heard from the room, when trying to sleep. However it did not go on all night .
- Philip (9/5): Very enjoyable stay. Will return sometime. - Breakfast was very nice with everything freshly cooked. Staff were very friendly and helpful.
- Fiona (8/5): Cosy room. Staff very welcoming and the food was delicious - The building had traditional beams and plenty of character. Excellent location.
- Nami (10/5): - Lovely staff, lovely food and room and superb breakfast. Great place to stay and would again.
- Liz (10/5): Excellent welcome in charming old inn - A welcome drink in our room and guest lounge with complementary scotch were really nice touches that made us feel welcomed. All the staff were friendly, the village is charming , dinner and breakfast were both good.
