We also booked a couple massage which was great, always good to have a massage off a professional who actually knows what they're doing. Great location for we're we needed to be. Great value to stay. The price of the bar drinks were a bit too expensive sadly. Only thing that let The Lion Blaenavon down.

The rooms are lovely. The food is absolutely outstanding for a place outside Cardiff. You really feel at home, Beth, who is both my maid and my breakfast was both friendly and you come into a room completely serviced. So friendly

• Frances (5/5): OK for a short visit if needing to visit that area, but I personally would not return. - Good choice of hot food for breakfast. Room was small but acceptable for single occupancy. Very little choice of cereals and no fruit available for breakfast. Very large shower and basin which meant the toilet was squashed in right by the door. Layout could have been better. When I first went into the bathroom, there was only a few sheets of toilet paper on the roll, so had to replace it immediately, cannot imagine why it had not been replaced prior to my arrival. The towel rail remained cold throughout my stay. In the open plan wardrobe hanging up was a towelling room and ONE hanger. I therefore had to hang my clothes on the chair provided. When I mentioned the lack of hangers to the gentleman manning the bar, he merely said "how many to you want". I did point out that it was normal to expect around 6 to be provided. As they had previously appeared on Four in a Bed, they should have been aware of this!!! I believe I locked my bedroom door when leaving on my first morning and left the key with reception. When I returned the door was unlocked. Although the bed had not been made nor either of the bins had not been emptied. The folder gave details of dinner menu and attractions close by, but no information regarding breakfast times or leaving times. On my first day, after booking in I left the hotel by the emergency exit which was open. When I returned early evening it was still open. This door leads directly to the bedrooms- not good for security.

• Elaine (7/5): Ideal to visit Big Pit Coal Museum - The breakfast and dinner choices were excellent and we enjoyed the bar and its atmosphere. The landlord, Marc, and the other staff we encountered were all very friendly. We booked a king size room but unfortunately the room we were given had a bath with shower attachment rather than a walk-in shower. This meant that after having a shower and/or hair wash the water went all over the floor. As the room had no window, the floor did not dry easily without using the floor mat and this did not dry for the next time we used it.

The toilet is placed almost directly next to the wall, which meant that the toiletseat had to swivel to a more comfortable place - this was definitely not the first time, as the screws were almost loose. The night stand was dusty and a bit sticky.

• Guest (8/5): A lovely little B&B with excellent food and comfortable roomns. - A lovely little room above a local pub. Bed was very comfortable and tea making facilities provided were spot on. The food served in the evening was of excellent quality and extremely tasty. Breakfast was also amazing with a great selection of freshly cooked items. Little bit of a let down with the cleanliness of the bathroom. Mildew around the shower screen and on grout on the tiles. Wouldn't take much to clean up. A very small issue, but nonetheless room for improvement. The walls were either paper thin or the lady in the room next door had a very loud voice as I could hear all her telephone conversations until nearly midnight. Could also hear music from the bar area. One minor point re breakfast, for business travellers, 8am start for breakfast is too late.

• Michael (5/5): Leider eher ein Zeuge des Niedergangs als des Aufschwungs - trotz sehr interessanter Geschichte - Liegt günstig in Blaenavon und es hat in der Regel genügend Parkplätze. Der Service war mehrheitlich bemüht und freundlich. Der Ort an sich ist sehr wohl eine Reise wert (Eisenhütten und Kohleminen sind absolut sehenswert). Der Preis für die Übernachtung geht letztlich in Ordnung, aber das Hotel erfüllt die Erwartungen nicht. Es fehlt leider an vielem: Reception ungnädig, mühsame Treppen und Türen, Bad richtig schlecht: Kein Licht vor dem Spiegel, WC-Rollen-Halterung im Wege, Ventilation mehr als verstaubt, keine Ablagefläche, Duschgel lieblos in einem eigenartigen Körbchen, etc. Kurzum, es müsste investiert werden. Sonntagabend im ganzen Ort kein Restaurant offen - auch nicht im Hotel. Sehr schade, weil der Ort betreffend Industrialisierung sehr viel zu bieten hat.

• stefania (8/5): Pulizia camera da migliorare - Abbiamo soggiornato 3 notti. Questo hotel è in un piccolo paesino tranquillo e recentemente strutturato. Lo staff è gentilissimo e disponibile. La colazione molto buona e anche la cena....hanno una cheesecake buonissima!! La camera un po piccola, invece il bagno era grande. La pulizia della camera non era delle migliori...c' era polvere che pendeva dai muri...e (questa è la mia opinione) non è accettabile non pulire una camera per chi soggiorna piu di due notti. Posso capire di non pulire tutti i giorni...ma almeno un giorno si e uno no. Inoltre a noi è capitata la camera con bagno con vasca ( su 12 stanze ne hanno tre con vasca).....scomodissima perché senza nessuna protezione era inevitabile allargare un po il bagno.

Comfy bed, lovely shower, friendly staff and a delicious cooked breakfast that is included makes this a great place to base yourself when touring this pretty part of Wales. Free and easy parking is also a bonus here. Crickhowell is a pretty town nearby that’s also well worth a visit.

Staff friendly and polite, especially at breakfast. Fire alarm going off as we just got our food Rooms extremely small and walls very thin, could hear the next door room going to the toilet, burping and farting. A lot of dust in the room especially on top of cabinets.

Staircase carpet to room awful odour and dirty, that unfortunately increased when we entered room 301. Room and bathroom smell and cleanliness awful. No mattress or pillow protectors and just not clean. If you’re the owner sort out housekeeping, spend a bit of money on some deep cleaning, revamp breakfast menu and educate staff on basic cleaning (check the espresso machine) and you’ll be good to go.

• Surinderjit singh (3/5): Some of my day I got there well in time got my food went to the room it was okay went to have a shower all the shower ge - Food was okay When I went to the property that day it was 30° hot and when I asked for the fan for the room they didn’t have any other people are using it. They’re supposed to have one fan for every room. I couldn’t sleep that night because it was so hot in the room.
• chrissie (8/5): Honest feedback - Lovely welcoming kind staff. The food is amazing and piping hot with lots of choice at breakfast. Bed comfortable and great shower with nice touch of fluffy bathrobe and toiletries. Easy parking, great location. Brilliant access to the moors, Big Pit, Abergavenny, Valleys, the sun shone, and we had a lovely couple of days especially at Keepers Pond and the Blorange summit/Fochabers. The Heather all in brilliant purple flower. All in all a great visit down memory lane for us. We can remember the hotel when it was a run down pub back in our youth so great to see time and effort and cash put in to turn it around 1. No mattress or pillow covers which really surprised me as the bed looked new 2. Tea and coffee could be on a small tray instead of stuffed in the cups 3. Public areas were grotty, the carpets in particular on the corridors and stairwell. I didn't want to touch the handrails or doors as very grimy. Walls and skirting in our room very dirty/dusty. Shower tray/trap mouldy. 4.Outside car park covered in rubbish, fag ends and broken glass, window boxes full of dead plants, not a great first impression. 5. Fire exit steps to the rooms very high [hubby has Parkinsons) and he struggled. I think money would have been better spent on improving what's there and not wasted on a Spa which no one ever uses.... However despite all of these niggles it's great value for money and yes we would stay again. The staff are lovely, work hard with nothing to much trouble. Food is amazing for such a small hotel. 😋

From the outside the hotel looks a bit dated but is surprisingly modern and clean inside. The bathroom door was very heavy and the automatic light was a good idea but disturbing in the night to the person sleeping facing the bathroom door.
