Never received one of my sides even though this was pointed out on several occasions. Food was "ok" but nothing spectacular and not worth the price paid. Would never eat there again.

Robert (3/5): Wish I had gone elsewhere for my anniversary. - It is in the center of Northampton and was lovely the last time we stayed. Hotel Returned to Hotel Northampton for our 35th anniversary. Was shocked to be put into the Gothic Gardens building across the parking lot from the main building. I was told I’d prefer it because a charitable event was going on at the main hotel building. I did not. Arrived at room to find a non working air conditioner, stained rugs, and a musty smell. Went to the main desk and they sent a guy in a suit to “reset” the air conditioner. Went to dinner to return to a muggy swampy room in the same heat condition as when we left. Finally, our room was changed to an upstairs room in the gothic garden building. Carpets were again splotched with stains and the ceiling had dried water spots. Two out of three blinds worked. The air conditioning unit worked in the second room, but it sounded like a jet running its engine. The mattress is one of the “pillow tops” and once sunken into one position, it took a gymnast’s strength to overcome the depth of the pillow to move. Sleeping was out of the question due to the noise of the a/c unit or the muggy warmth if not using the a/c. I will say that the staff was helpful, though their help don’t make the experience one I’m happy about paying for. Had I been able to do it all over, I would have gone elsewhere.

703dawnmariek (6/5): Not for someone with back problems - I was really excited to stay at Hotel Northampton. It is a great location, walking distance to shops, restaurants and Smith College. The hotel is a sweet, old fashioned inn. The mattress was absolutely torture as it is basically a big fluffy cotton ball with zero support. Our backs hurt us for the 3 nights and days we stayed there. The toilet is also so low the ground it was uncomfortable. We asked for a topper for the mattress and they said they did not have one and would not move our room because they said all the mattresses are the same. There is also zero sound proofing and you can hear every conversation of people walking by from your bed. So it was not conducive to a good nights sleep. They also seem to be incredibly understaffed especially at breakfast time in the restaurant. There was one server who basically was running around doing everything. The food was good and the bar staff friendly.

Jessica K (10/5): A Welcoming and Restful Stay. - Where do I begin? The property is amazing and well maintained. The front desk staff were friendly and accommodating as was security. The room was spacious and beautifully decorated. The robes were soft and comforting. The windows were aplenty and, upon opening my eyes after a restful sleep, I was greeted with an amazing view of the sun rising from behind the mountains. The coffee maker in the room left much to be desired. Figuring the best way to overpower the rattle of the heating system, challenge accepted and conquered (I couldn't give up that room); just like all of us on the snowed in day, the heating system needed to warm up.
Kyle (4/5): The noise and cramped space definitely outweighed the convenience of being in town. - We used to live close to Northampton, and wanted a quick getaway to enjoy favorite restaurants, etc. The location can't be beat. Check-in was easy. Staff were reasonably friendly. Decades ago, my sister was put up at the Hotel Northampton as a guest of Smith College, and her room was spacious and gave a sense of privacy. Our stay was far from that. Even in NYC, we've had more square footage in a queen-bed room than here. Only one person could move at a time. It was the smallest "queen sized" bed I've ever seen; the person at the desk said to me, "Hotel queen beds are smaller than commercial," which is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard of. Most annoying was the complete lack of sound insulation. In the middle of the night, I was awakened by the sound of a toilet seat being raised and a man urinating -- I was going to tell my husband to shut the bathroom door, then realized the sound was from the next room. In the morning, while we were still sleeping, housekeepers were loud in the hallway, with barking walkie-talkies. The room was so small, the bed was quite close to the door.

Jan (4/5): Lesson learned - next time we’ll pay half as much for twice the space in the comfort inn in Hadley - Great location smack in the center of Northampton. Grand building. More expensive than other places, and you pay for the ambiance of a historic hotel. No breakfast is included - if you want to pay for the weekend brunch in the basement grotto you’d better make a reservation well in advance. The room was minuscule, with a “balcony” shared with HVAC equipment. The bathroom door wouldn’t close. The “no outside alcohol” clause is absolutely absurd.

They did a good job clearing the snow from the lot and walkways I would have expected a cozy down comforter on the bed and not a light weight cotton blanket as winter here is cold! Continental breakfast did not exist so you had to pay for breakfast. It was good food but not what we expected.

One asked us to pay cash after having us sit for a single drink we got to go and asked if we just wanted to take the food. They gave me a huge silver tray to carry upstairs ourselves. The ribs were nasty, fries were great! We had ordered room service and just rand down for a drink not a whole tray to carry ourselves.

I do not like that dinner in NO LONGER SERVED in the historic Wiggins tavern. I have eaten there before in the 90s and it was beautiful and a special experience. Now there’s only Brunch. Bring dinner back!

There is some history to the place. - The good: Spacious room Old school feel with moldings, high ceilings Location is excellent in downtown Northampton Shared terrace with direct room access attached to room 204 with three tables and chairs for fresh air. Comfortable bed with clean linens The not as good: Small bathroom Bathroom door out of plumb so swings in against the sink if not closed No full-length mirror Rooms are a bit worn Electric outlets on one side of the bed only Noisy HVAC My room was suitable for two but not more. I would come again if I needed to be in Northampton. All things considered, I found it a better overall value than a generic alternative on the nearby retail sprawl, notwithstanding the lack of the “free” breakfast of powdered eggs and make believe bagels. I paid a premium to stay on Thanksgiving evening. See above
amherst_reader (6/5): Clean and Boring - I have long wanted to stay at the Hotel Northampton, and finally got the chance. It's got two nice restaurants, the Coolidge Cafe and Wiggins Tavern. Both a worth a try. The public spaces are lovely, respectful of the hotel's history, and comfortable if you are waiting for your companion, or just wasting time. My room, on the other hand, was just so-so. Very clean and the bed was comfortable as was the room's temperature, so no complaints there. But the in-room decor is boring to the point of "blah." The bathroom has quite possibly the smallest, lowest toilet seat I have ever seen. If you have bad knees, maybe ask if there are handicap rooms available, because you will have a problem with the toilet. Other oddities: the hairdryer is in the TV cabinet; all night long there was a knocking sound that seem like it was coming from the hall. Ghost, perhaps? Maybe premium rooms are nicer, but my regular queen was just ok.
Odyssey627408 (6/5): Beware of adjoining rooms-very loud - The hotel is well kept up and the lobby is nice. The third floor room we stayed in was large and had access to an uncovered balcony with a table and chairs for each of the 3+ rooms that had access. Unbeknownst to us our room connected to the room next door. Unsure if that is why we could hear every word of our neighbor's conversation at normal volume or not but it nearly ruined our trip. People in the room next door stayed up late and woke up early so it was a real annoyance. Probably won't return because of this.

williamfromla (4/5): Good bones but deferred maintenance - I love old historic hotels and this place falls into that category. First the good: attentive, friendly staff, but that’s about it. If you look closely, paint is needed everywhere, extension cords are running from second floor to third, pvc pipes are running across front entrance staircase. Housekeeping is very very slow. Two waiters, can’t handle bar and restaurant properly. If this was a comfort inn at 150 night you might overlook a few shortcomings but this is a 500 a night hotel. Owners need to inject cash into the hotel. Last night there a wedding party and subsequent after party lasted until 1 am. A function shouldn’t interfere with the guest wanting a nice evenings sleep. I don’t know that I’d come back if I was in the area again. Kudos to a great staff who kept stay from being a total disaster.

The bed was horribly uncomfortable. It seemed like it needs to be replaced. It sank in the middle and was extremely soft. The bathroom fan was making a noise while it ran.

James (4/5): - We last stayed at this hotel several years ago for our daughter’s wedding. At that time we were quite pleased with it. On this trip, but for the exterior and lobby it was a whole new experience. While our room was large it felt as though we were in a 1950s Howard Johnson The amenities were below average: nothing in the refrigerator, a coffee machine that screamed 1950, a bathroom that looked as if it had been upgraded by Bath Fitters (with very tight budget restrictions), and a bed that was a double not a queen. I’m sorry but we won’t be back.
