Guest Reviews
- Michelle (10/5): Thank you for a very blessed stay!!! - The host/owner was amazing, precious, professional, informative, and the list continues!!!
The cabin met all of our needs (and then some)!!!
We used this cabin as our "BASE". It afforded us the opportunity to check off MULTIPLE bucket List Places. (2100 miles of "Bucket List Places") THE LOCATION IS INCREDIBLE!!! JS!!!
OH... AND THE WILDLIFE ALL AROUND OUR CABIN!!!! INCREDIBLE!!! The bathroom might have been a little tight for my husband but was just right for me.

- Michelle (10/5): It far exceeded our expectations! - We love this property! This was a return trip and we will be back again for sure! Shane and his family were very nice, and we lived visiting with Maggie in the Tap room!
- Marcy (8/5): - Everyone was so friendly, awesome atmosphere cabins were small but clean, amazing scenery We thought we were going to have a kitchen in our cabin but there wasn't so we had to buy all the utensils. If we stay there again I will call & make sure we do
- Guest (3/5): The cabin was way too small for the price I paid - The location was fine. The cost for the cabin was way too expensive. The size of the cabin was good for one person. Not two and a dog. The people next door paid a little over $400 for their stay. Why was I charged $800 for my stay when we both had the same cabin and stayed the same amount of days ? The pictures on the web site are deceiving, showing the two the three bedroom cabins making one believe that they are all the same size. For what I got, and what I was charged, I got ripped off !! I will tell 20 of my friends never to stay there as they will be extremely disappointed !! The deception of the room size and the cost.
- OVA (10/5): Wonderful place - Beautiful wonderful location and people are awesome
- OVA (10/5): Would definitely stay again - The location and people weee great

- Robert (9/5): Great location and superb friendly staff (Maggie)! - Liked the grilling station and the bar. Maggie was an absolute treat! After a long day touring the area, just back to the bar, unwind, enjoy some drinks and say hello to Maggie; it will enhance your trip!Walking distance to restaurants.
- Pat (8/5): Would definitely stay here again…maybe in a bigger cabin, though. - Maggie was AWESOME!
The setting was perfect, and we loved the little bar area and the fire pit Having to crawl over my husband to go to the bathroom at 2am! LOL! Would have liked just a little more room in the bedrooms and the bathroom.
- Kevan (7/5): Hot water blues - Location was great, small cabin feel, nice staff, tap room in the rear Was up at 6:30am & went to take a shower, but the hot water had already used up, the couple next to me said, it was first come.
Only place to put out toiletries was on the toilet seat, the couch or bed

- Anonymous (9/5): Great Stay! - Great location and host was great! Maggie was awesome! She had great travel advice and tips for things to see and do. Loved the location; nice walk to downtown for coffee and shopping. Cabin was cute and cozy, comfortable beds!
- Gregory (10/5): Exceptional - Shane was extremely accommodating and then there's Maggie in the tap room behind the cabins ,let me just say she did not disappoint happy some of our large group are on the legends wall now 😃
- Corina (9/5): Perfect stay, thank you! - Nice beautiful cabins. Looks so amazing and a wunderfull experians! The owner was very nice and friendli Nothing
- Sue (5/5): Location was good, accommodations were fair - Location was good. New bar area was unexpected - it was not advertised. They sold beer on tap and cans. Mead on tap. Pizza from a local place - one size only for $10. Bartender was chatty and informative. The 'cabin' was SOOOO SMALL. It was really one cabin divided in two. There was barely room for 2 adults plus a dog. If I had realized it was that small, I would of simply just booked a two bed cabin.
The chairs were impossible to sit on. Hand made of wood but really uncomfortable.
The bathroom had no room to put anything on the sink while you were brushing teeth etc. The one shelf was too high.
The bath towels were so tiny we went out and bought a real bath towel. And a rug. Left them for the resort to keep. There was nothing to stand on in cold bathroom. Need a rug in main area too.
The light was a fan too an blew in ONLY cold air. It was freezing in there.
Ad claimed outdoor seating but there was only one chair. They knew we were two adults that would be staying there.
- Sheryl (8/5): Black Hills Getaway - Great location. Bed was very comfortable. No counter space in kitchen. Space heater for heat. Limited kitchen utencils. O ly one reading light in bedroom.
- Misty (8/5): Very good -
- Victoria (10/5): Exceptional - Comfy cozy rooms. Super friendly and helpful staff. Waking distance to main street. Loved Miss Maggie !
- David (10/5): Exceptional -
- Patty (10/5): Fun place to stay! - Very comfortable for our group of ten in two cabins. The cabins were very secluded and quiet.
- Graham (9/5): A friendly and comfortable place near many great attractions - Nice and close to a range of restaurants in the main street of Hill City. We had a very friendly time in the tap room with the host Maggie and many fellow travellers
- Jeanine (9/5): Superb -
- John (10/5): Great stay will definitely be back - Quite, the staff was A+ and the bar was awesome
- Lyndsey (10/5): Exceptional -
- Melody (9/5): Superb -
- Suzy (10/5): Exceptional - It was a very cute, private small cabin. Hosts we're very friendly and helpful.
- Becky (5/5): Poorly described - Upstairs there were holes in the wall just covered with plywood. Pictures show arcade games and there was none of those. Cob webs in the light fixtures and corners of the door ways. In the bathroom upstairs it's like an airplane toilet VERY VERY small and when you shut the door there is a pretty big gap still where anyone coming down the hall can see right in and see you sitting on the toilet. The beds are full beds upstairs in the 2 rooms NOT Queen and then 2 twin beds NOT full size beds in the other room. Not well described at all. Did have nice room/space on the main level.
- Nicole (8/5): Off season travel - Location was close to destinations NA
- Simmons (10/5): Exceptional -
- Krystal (10/5): Exceptional -
- Bruce (10/5): Exceptional -
- Tim (10/5): Cozy, Comfortable, Clean, Convenient. - It was a very comfy and cozy cabin. That we had to leave and go back to work. :)
- Rene (9/5): Centrally located, private, well maintained, and super comfortable. - Allen Gulch has a great location. It was private, had great beds, and a wonderful shower.
We had everything we needed. We felt the property was well maintained. Shane really cared about his customers and was there to help with anything we needed
We will definitely stay at Allen Gulch again.
- David (10/5): It was very clean and everything the booking said. -
- Erika (9/5): Superb -
- Kenneth (1/5): Dont stay there. We travel a lot and this was the worst place we have ever stayesd - nothing We rented a house with a kitchenet but got a cabin with a microwave. It was dirty. spider webs on the ceiling. The curtains hadnt been cleaned in years, there was dirt on the top of the curtains. The bed was set in a nook so to get into bed you had to crawl into it from the end of bed. The host not change our room for us.
- Deana (10/5): Exceptional - Nice, spacious cabin! Fun outside space for kids to play. Quiet location with deer and turkey in the morning! Would highly recommend!
- Sally (7/5): Good - it was quiet and private
- Kim (6/5): Pleasant -
- Joseph (10/5): Exceptional -
- Larry (3/5): Poor - Quiet area. Was not clean. Rear door did not have a good lock. Was not what we were expecting
- Bill (10/5): Exceptional -
- Geerdes (10/5): Exceptional - Centrally located
- Laura (5/5): Passable - I thought the property was located in a great spot. The photos didn’t really match up with how. The cabins really were. The beds were really uncomfortable and the cabins at least the cabin that we got, which was cabin number two was really tiny.
- Miller (9/5): Great location and so wonderful to have our own space to stay together as a family. - Great location. We loved South Dakota so much. It was easy to get everywhere we wanted to visit. We loved having a place with enough bedrooms for 5 people (couple plus 3 pre-teen/teen boys). It’s hard to stay as a family when the boys all want their own beds. This gave us the opportunity to do that. A huge perk was our own bedrooms so everyone had their own space-which is so nice. We’ve never been able to afford to drive to South Dakota with them because summer rates are so high, but coming in September was a really great option for us to actually be able to have a family vacation there. Nice to have our own entrance and kitchen. We were able to save money by eating breakfast and packing the cooler every day-thanks to the kitchen. The grounds looked nice but we really only had time to sleep this trip. There weren’t enough blankets and my boys were cold in the bedrooms. We ended up using a blanket from the car but one of the kids was still chilly. The towels were very very thin and tiny and scratchy. I wish the bathroom had a vented fan. The sofa bed was a good idea but in reality it was really uncomfortable for my sons who took turns sleeping on it. We would need to stay in a cabin with enough actual beds next time. I don’t think the sofa bed could work well for anyone but a very young child. Still very glad we stayed there.
- Larrianna (10/5): Amazing property, nice owners, very affordable, very accommodating! Clean! And quiet! - Location, friendly service, accommodations Would of liked a bigger fridge. And side bed table
- Maksym (10/5): It was good and we had a rest with pleasure - Everything. Place, nature, bar at the back with bartender Meggie None
- Richard (9/5): Superb -
- Lesa (10/5): Great time at Allen Gulch Cabins - Hosts Shane, Hedi, and Harper are great. They checked to see how our stay was going and helped with anything we needed. A MUST do is visit MAGGIE in the Taproom, right out back of the cabins. She is wonderful, gave us great suggestions on where to eat and things to do. The location is 2 blocks from Main St, an easy walk, and close to many must-see Black Hills attractions. Deer and Turkey enjoy visiting the property, too! Would definitely stay here again. We enjoyed our 5 nights here.
- Randy (10/5): Exceptional -
- Christine (5/5): Passable - Kitchen and front deck- Maggie was awesome and the tap room, firepit area was good. Laundry room was filthy, claustrophobic as no space around the cabin. Located in town. Upstairs bedrooms with narrow steps.
- Trudy (10/5): Thank you - Relaxing, wild deer and turkeys outside . Friendly neighbors and bar onsite with the most wonderful friendly bartender. Cabin was spectacular.
- Carol (8/5): I would stay here again, but book a larger cabin. - The host was very accommodating and friendly. Good location to town. I didn’t realize I booked a one bed unit. It was very cozy. Bathroom too.
- Novak (9/5): Cute, adorable and cozy, perfect spot for a short sweet stay. - I liked how it had nice views and everyone who booked was super friendly to talk to and the host was even friendly as well. I did not like that the bathroom felt a little crammed but it had everything that a bathroom needed and it worked for the time we were there.
- Arthur (10/5): Exceptional - Very clean, quiet, awesome.
- Laura (8/5): Perfect location for enjoying the downtown area of Hill City, as well as the local monuments!! - The location was perfect and the unit was sparkling clean! The bed seemed more like a double than a queen, so we struggled to sleep and there was no couch, so we were stuck trying to make it work for the week.
Also, the bath towels were tiny and we each needed two to per day to get dry (and we are thin people).
- Joyce (10/5): Exceptional - Nice location, the owner and his aunt was very nice. Would stay again.
- Paula (10/5): Exceptional -
- Deborah (9/5): Excellent choice. Would definitely return. - Vey affordable!!! Private bedrooms. Just a little dust around toilet paper holder.
- Deborah (5/5): Loved the area, lots to do so didn't have to spend extra time in cabin - Location was great. At edge of town so always saw so.e wild life. Had porch with chairs. Maggie managed Tap Room, and she was so friendly and funny. Enjoyed her Bed was crowded I to small space so had to crawl to top of bed to get in
Coffee maker there had water in container to maker. Didn't know how long that was there. We always bring our own coffee maker.
Room was dusty.
- Amy (9/5): Great place! Will stay there again. -
- Ginny (10/5): Exceptional -
- Camille (10/5): Exceptional -
- Swanson (9/5): A great time with my family in a great location in the Black Hills. - Nothing. Everything was great.
- Mark (8/5): Very good - Location was nice. the daily view of deer was nice to see. Beds were a little hard, but aside from that the stay was enjoyable.
- Paul (10/5): Perfect! - Cabin 1 was simple and exactly what we needed for a quick trip on the motorcycle. A nice bed with a warm shower! We really enjoyed the tap room and public patio area. They provide gas grills on the patio for public use and with a little pre planning on our part that would have been a great easy cheap meal. I have no complaints.
- Cheryl (10/5): Enjoyed. Ready to go back - Cute cabin. Quiet Bigger room
- Kelley (10/5): All in all, it was a wonderful cabin very clean and nice - Close to downtown, very clean, roomie, bathroom was excellent and convenient. It had air conditioning and heat. The parking area wasn’t ideal for a motorcycle. The loose rocks along with a small area were difficult to get out of.
- Andrew (10/5): Exceptional -
- Michelle (10/5): Best place to stay in Hill City - The cabins were fantastic. It felt like home. There's a little tap room in the back of the cabins. Maggie, who is the bartender, is amazing. She makes you feel at home. All the guests go back and unwind from their day and have a beer and talk and get to know each other. They also have bbq grills in the back. Don't stay in a hotel stay here.
- Robert (10/5): Great hosts, locals who know the best places to visit and eat. -
- Sean (8/5): Very good -
- Joselyn (10/5): Exceptional - The cabin was very nice and well equipped with everything we needed. Parking was great right next to the cabin. The bar/patio area is beautiful. What a great place to relax and enjoy the beautiful scenery. . Maggie and the host are so awesome. There is nothing that we didn't like. We wish we could have stayed longer.
- Melinda (10/5): Our state was wonderful we had the best time ever and we loved Maggie to death and Shane was a great - I have to say this was the most beautiful experience I've ever had I enjoyed every experience I was there and Maggie was adorable and if anybody wants to go there to the tap room you have to see Maggie cuz she will light up your life or she did ours we had the best experience while we were there and I can't wait to come back again and I will recommend this place to every person I know I give it a 10 I have to say there wasn't anything I didn't like the rooms were clean beautiful the property was gorgeous there's nothing bad to say about it I recommend it we already booked for next summer
- Amy (9/5): Everything was nice, staff was very friendly. Very clean. - Host and ower were very friendly. They were gracious enough to let us come a day early. One of the wheels for the leg of the bed were missing, so made the bed lopsided. Made it tough to sleep, but we made do.
- Patrick (8/5): Very good -
- Victoria (8/5): Great stay. - Cute cabins, cute patio in the back and fire pit. Neighbors let their dogs loose
