• Michael (1/5): You will not be allowed to eat dinner at the restaurant - The views are really nice and its close to Gora station You can only have dinner there if you book it in advance during check in or call no online bookings like normal restaurants allow. Everything around there shuts really early. I tried to eat there, despite there being multiple tables available I was told I cannot book there now. I went to bed hungry and wondering why I booked here I could have eaten sandwiches from seven 11 and thrown newspapers over me and slept under the Gora underpass instead. Do “bettei” next time.

Staff was EXTREMELY UNHELPFUL, while I understand there is a language barrier, it says a lot about a hotel when you pay 300 USD a night and mimic you are hungry and they do nothing to help you get food whatsoever, saying NO DINNER, NO BREAKFAST.

• Paul (9/5): Beautiful & Quiet, Wish We Stayed Longer - Great hotel in quiet area with beautiful views from our patio with private onsen. Very easy to access; location was great. Clean and authentic. Friendly and helpful staff. Restaurants for dinner and breakfast well exceeded our expectations, with food I've never eaten, but loved. Presentation and service was amazing. We enjoyed the private hot tub we reserved, but did not use the public onsen, so cannot comment. Many amenities in the room, with kettle and tea. Water and espresso machine available in the lobby free of charge. Would have been nice to have instant coffee in the room, and maybe a vending machine or area to purchase snacks or drinks, but not a big deal.

• Andrew (9/5): A slightly retro, unique experience in the hills above Gora. - This hotel has a great view of the valley, and is in a very quiet town. The town of Gora is basically a transfer from the train to the ropeway, on your way up to Owakudani. It is very quiet because there just isn't much in the town, other than hotels and a few restaurants. The Hakone Open air museum is one train stop away from the town of Gora (or a 20 min walk from the hotel) and is worth seeing (has a Picasso museum). The hotel itself is older, but well maintained, clean, and very professionally run. We were well taken care of during our stay. The onsen is clean, and our room came with a soaking tub on the balcony. We had breakfast and dinner. The food was very good- every thing was fresh, and seasonal, and the chef was very creative with the dishes served. The staff were polite and friendly. I don't speak much Japanese, so I appreciated they spoke basic English- they were able to get us checked in and explained all the food we were served. One needs to plan ahead when using the tub on the balcony. It takes about 45 minutes to fill. The hotel is up a pretty steep hill- if you are not in decent shape, consider taking the ropeway to the first stop (from the terminal at the bottom) and exit to the left side- that cuts off about 2/3 of the steep walk.

• Gordon (7/5): Nice and peaceful - View is rather lovely. It is quiet and peaceful, and feels like a nice escape. The rooms are quite nice, with a good amount of space, and the ensuite onsen tubs are lovely to soak in with an outdoors view of the mountains. Located uphill on a slope – challenging to go and up down from with luggage or if one has physical disabilities. Besides breakfast and dinner, food and drink options are very limited on the property.

• Karla (10/5): - Our stay in Bettei Koyoi was exceptional! We wanted to stay here for a night to rest and relax, and this hotel exceeded our expectations. The staff was very friendly and accommodating with our requests, we were able to drop off our bags prior to check-in so we could comfortably explore Hakone. Additionally, our stay included a dinner and a breakfast, these two meals were amazing, some of the best food we tried in Japan as a whole. I'd highly recommend staying here if you'd like to relax, eat great meals, and spend some time in a hot spring overlooking the mountain. It was such a wonderful time. N/A

• Timo (3/5): Das Preis-Leistungs-Verhältnis ist eine bodenlose Frechheit - Das Personal war sehr nett und hilfsbereit und die Lage und Aussicht waren gut. Es war alles sehr alt und verwohnt. Ganz anders als auf den Bildern dargestellt. Das Bett war unbequem, man hat jede Feder gespürt. Überall waren Kalkflecken und das Outdoorbad war eine kleine unansehnliche Holzkiste. Außerdem hat es im Haus nach Altöl gerochen.

La struttura ha molti problemi: - Sia nella descrizione che nei messaggi privati della struttura si parla di un servizio navetta per raggiungere l’hotel. Non esiste. Pertanto devi arrampicarti per 15 minuti in salita con le valige. Il nome sull’hotel è diverso da quello di Booking e neanche i taxi lo conoscono pertanto non abbiamo potuto prenderlo. -All’arrivo ci accoglie il receptionist che non parla una parola di inglese. Inoltre non ci ha fornito nemmeno una indicazione, né per il Wi-Fi né per l’onsen. Mi è toccato scendere più volte a richiedere ma alla fine è toccato fare da soli poiché non ti capisce. L’onsen è sporco e piccolo. La sauna di sassi è su prenotazione ma ovviamente il receptionist non lo aveva detto e quindi noi siamo potuti andare. La cena devo ammettere che era molto buona, anche se è stata servita in 2 ore a noi occidentali, mentre i giapponesi presenti venivano serviti prima. Nel complesso sarebbe una struttura carina ma l’inospitalità regna sovrana, almeno per noi stranieri. Assolutamente sconsigliato!! Segnalato anche all’assistenza di Booking che non si è degnata di rispondere.

• MISAENG (10/5): - どのスタッフもとても気持ちの良い応対でした。温泉の泉質もよく、掛け流しでツルツルになる系。建物はおそらく古いですがリノベーションされていたり、綺麗に手入れされていて気持ちよく泊まれました。 大浴場を出たところには無料のアイスがあったり、24時間コーヒーマシンが使えたりなど気遣いが感じられました。 朝ごはんだけたべましたが、土鍋ごはんと、鉄鍋の豚汁、ご飯に合う色々な副菜、とてもおいしく満足でした。 ぜひ今度は夜ご飯付きで泊まりたいと思いました。

• Craig (5/5): This hotel can do a lot better for it's price. - I only liked the privacy of my onsen I got a king size with mountain view private onsen. There was an onsen but not private. I couldn't leave the blinds open as my balcony was facing the main roads. I couldn't see any mountains and the poor design of having the blinds anchor on the left side makes it impossible to open and close the blinds from the onsen tub. The only thing I really liked was the privacy of my onsen. Everything else was under valued including the size of my room. I've been far and wide, hakone was my 12th city on this trip. I've tried all sorts of food and your kaiseki was beyond underwhelming. I've stayed for two nights and your breakfast and dinner meals were too alike. About 90% exactly the same. That's a lazy chef. You guys should also warn customers that your hotel is deep in the mountain. The hike down and back up the hill is no joke. I'm used to speed walking 6 hrs everyday but that mountain was a nightmare. Beer cost additional 9$ a drink. I know drinks at other hotels in hakone are comped with the price. This place was by no means cheap for a 3 star but everything cost extra. You paid extra to have a private onsen but they charge you again per night for using the onsen. There is also an additional fee for the hot stone spa. Other hotels/ryokans in the area at the same price offers more amenities and complementarities integrated into the price. They are the same price as this place. You guys can do better for charging so much. You guys also ask for tips, I thought it was in Japanese culture that tipping is considered disrespectful. What's up with that?

• Christian (6/5): - A bit expensive for such old rooms. Weird dark stains on the carpet in the corners of the bedroom... The sheets were clean though. The food was pretty good but not as good as some ryokans in the same price range.

• James (6/5): This property is not currently a great value - it needs a significant refurbish. - Fortunately the room and beds were fine, and featured a Frank Lloyd Wright stand lamp. The outdoor private balcony bathtub (which we paid extra for), was an old wooden box covered in mildew and not something we could take advantage of. This property needs a serious refresh / update. The "onsen" is musty and very small, and the facility charges extra to use the jacuzzi and hot stones area. The dinner was trying to be high-end multi-course, but missed the mark with half of the plates. The lobby, dining area and onsen feel like they are from the 1970s. The location is great, with easy access to the Hakone Ropeway.

• Greg (7/5): Overall good and relaxing short stay. - Good size Japanese style room with private onsen. Room very clean and comfortable. Public onsen well maintained and a very relaxing experience. Front desk staff very helpful and explained all the available services and how to use the public onsen. On the whole the evening meal was a fun experience, however perhaps the customers could be asked how they would like their steak to be cooked and wait staff could gain more familiarity with how to serve the available drinks (the wine). But the staff at dinner were all very lovely and tried to explain things to us in English and gave us recommendations of what sake to try!
• Georgia (10/5): 10000/10, so romantic, relaxing and affordable. - Do yourself a favour and STAY HERE whilst in Hakone. If I could rate it 1000/10 I would. We visited from Sydney for 2 nights and have had the most incredible time. I really couldn’t recommend this Ryoken more!! Location: Amazing location in the mountains, short walk from Gora station which is one of the main ones. The walk is all all steep uphill but Hakone is pretty much hills everywhere so it is what it is. The hotel has a super efficient shuttle service though so definitely use that especially when you arrive with your suitcases (although we walked a few times without our suitcases and it was only 10mins max). Shuttle runs 3 times every hour (when stayed there it was on the hour, 20mins, 40mins). Instructions for how to get shuttle are super clear on website. Ryoken & Staff: So peaceful and romantic. The rooms were so spacious (bigger than Tokyo) and had everything you needed inside. Bed super comfy and great mood lighting too. Staff were so so friendly and accomodating, don’t speak much English but we’re visiting their country so that makes sense! You get given these adorable kimonos to wear throughout your stay and shoes. Amenities: Super happy with amenities. Complimentary tea, coffee, happy hour drinks. They also have a private jacuzzi and bedrock bath you can book - highly recommend both. You can also book in a masseuse which I did too, they come to your hotel room. Food: Oh my god I don’t know where to start. The food was INCREDIBLE. We had dinner and breakfast included with the stay. It was very traditional Japanese style so don’t expect toast etc. It is all so thoughtfully and mindfully created, the chefs are sooo lovely and the quality is insane. The courses included of around 7 dishes and it was such a pleasure being able to experience this food. I forgot to tell them I had a dietary requirement (my own fault), and the next night they absolutely catered for me it was so so sweet (give them a few days notice if you have a dietary!). Loved absolutely everything
