- Melaina (10/5): - My boyfriend and I had a beautiful experience! Our room was huge and had comfortable individual futons on the floor. We reserved a private outdoor onsen bath that was on our balcony. It was best enjoyed at nighttime under the stars with a great view of Kyoto from high up. The staff was friendly and accommodating and took the time to make sure we were comfortable and satisfied. We received welcome tea and a snack then had a multicourse dinner and a traditional Japanese breakfast in the morning, both in the dining hall. (Groups have separate tables but are in one large room, restaurant-style.) We were both given yukatas (one for wearing to meals and one for sleeping) and although we tried watching several YouTube videos on how to properly tie them, it was a challenge and I don’t think we got it right. Luckily, nobody made fun of us or gave us strange looks. :) A ryokan is a unique and traditional Japanese experience that I highly recommend researching ahead of time so you’re aware of how things work, what customs to abide by, and what to expect. That said, the staff was happy to answer questions we had. We hope to return here with our future children someday, as they have family options available, too!

We opted for the food which was excellent (although I don't recall having a bad meal in Kyoto at all). Rooms were comfortable and service was great. The onsen was never busy and really relaxing. I hope to return one day.

The dinner service was interesting. Not all the food was for me but the staff were very helpful and explaining what it all was. The rooms were comfortable, lots of space and the open air bath in the room was amazing. If we find our way back to Japan, we will definitely come back. We did not use the other baths in the facility due to us having tattoos but the room was enough. I’m sure they were just as great!

It's been 3 weeks and we still feel the same way so here are my comments: We booked this Ryokan for 1 night last minute and got it for the "bargain" price of $401 USD. It was supposed to be a Mountain View room with a private soaking tub on the patio in a hotel that advertises natural hot spring water. What we got was a room overlooking the street in the Mountain View Building, a teeny tiny bathtub that you fill up with tap water, also overlooking the street. The spring water was downstairs. Not what we wanted though since it was raining, and we were looking forward to spending the day together privately. Check in was quite late in the day and checkout was 10 a.m. In general the building was in dire need of updating. I know what a $400 a night room should be like and this was most definitely not it. All in all, it was a very poor value.

The room was the most Japanese style ever for all hotels we stayed during the trip. I love the water streaming decoration outside bedroom, it made me calm and relax. The hot spring was unbeatable, the only regret was I was too late to book the outdoor ones.

- Shane (10/5): We want to come back! - The staff was wonderful and treated us extremely well from the moment we walked in the door. We stayed in the Japanese style room with semi-open air bath. It exceeded all my expectations. Very spacious room with an absolutely beautiful view of the river and mountains from the room and bathtub. Spent a lot of time relaxing in the tub and also tried out the onsen at the hotel. Staying here was definitely the highlight of our trip so far. We splurged on this hotel room as it costs way more than the rest of our lodging during our trip but we are so glad that we did. The location is fantastic for a relaxing stay in Arashiyama away from the bustle of the city. I would absolutely stay here again if I return to Kyoto in the future.

To be honest, we have traveled the world in luxury in our lives. But our stay at Togetsutei was unforgettable. The culture of Omotenashi (service beyond expected as business), Kaisei food and convenient location! Onsen (big bath house) was very nice, too. Usually, there’s only one/two people bathing. Meal itself will justify the $ for lodging. Go visit Japan while strong $ lasts. Thank you Togetsutei!!!

We had thought room dining service, but dining service were offered in their own restaurant. Of course, dining was good quality and very delicious. So, i think that pre-mentioning about dining service would be better for both host and tourist. ※ There are no smoking place in and around accomodation. I guess that Arashiyama is non-smoking area.

- 243davisr (2/5): Worst lodging experience of my life - Horrible experience. Was really looking forward to our stay here, but this was the only part of my Japan trip that wasn’t great. The kaiseki dinner was inedible; everything else I’ve eaten in Japan has been amazing. We had to leave half way through the meal, because my 7 year old daughter leaned over to me with tears starting to form saying how hungry she was and didn’t want to waste food, but she couldn’t eat any of it bc it was too gross. We left dinner at that moment. I almost left the ryokan after dinner, but we were all tired from traveling and decided to stay the night. It didn’t get better. In the end, we left the next morning and forfeited the rest of the stay. - Bathtub was covered in mold and bathroom smelled like mold. - Toilet smelled terrible - No soap in bathroom - Wi-Fi doesn’t work - Dinner was inedible and left halfway through. Felt sick after eating the small amount we did eat. - Didn’t dare to try breakfast

We had a relaxing stay, using the gender split onsen and also the Japanese bath tub in our room. The property was covered in scaffolding when we were there, they must be doing some external renovations. The view from our bath tub would've been nicer without the scaffolding. The breakfast in the morning was also great!
- ah_sung (8/5): Worth a visit - You don't get too many choices for onsen hotel in Arashiyama (嵐山) and most of them are pricy. Able to book this one during peak time (as 3-Nov is Japan public holiday), my room has little onsen like bathtub which is very nice. The dinner was extremely beautiful and delicate. Only the onsen is average and it's indoor only. It's right next to the famous Togetsukyō (渡月橋) and walking distance to most of the tourist spots in Arashiyama. Arashiyama is a beautiful place, you can expect a lot of tourists, both local and foreigner visiting this place. It was pretty crowded during my stay. It's worth visiting, maybe once.
- DonaldG03 (10/5): Amazing experience. - Amazing experience to say the least! You are provided an 11 course kaiseki-style dinner and 3 course kaiseki-style breakfast. We has selected the traditional bed which is a bit of an adjustment. We also had access to a private open air bath. Our server was great and was able to explain all of the meal. Would recommend.
- nammers313 (8/5): Great experience for my parents - I booked this ryokan style hotel for my parents' vacation and they said they really enjoyed it. They said they received very attentive service from the start. Their futons were set up for them each evening and put away each morning by the staff and they were served an immaculate kaiseki style dinner each night. They were impressed when the staff preemptively offered umbrellas before they headed out for the day because the forecast called for some minor showers. They had a cypress bath in their room which they enjoyed relaxing in after their long day of sightseeing. Just to be clear that this isn't an actual in-room onsen, just a very large wood Japanese-style soaking tub. That wasn't exactly clear to me as a foreigner trying to book the room for my parents online, but it was still a nice feature for them to enjoy. They were able to book a private onsen in a stone bath for a very reasonable rate (~ $25USD for 45 min). Overall, I'm happy my parents were happy and enjoyed the experience.
- IanS4790 (8/5): Very interesting experience but could have been better - My girlfriend and I went here for a single night and we went with my elderly parents as well who stayed in the room next to us. In general we found the stay very interesting. Dinner is included in the price which is quite neat and it is served to you in your room, and they were very good to accomodate all four of us eating in our room so that we could eat together. It is extremely well presented and you have lots of small courses (about seven courses I think it was). I can't say we liked eating everything we got (in general we liked about 50% of it and my family are extremely non-fussy eaters who experiment a lot and normally like everything), however it didn't really matter that there were things we didn't like, as it was interesting. The biggest problem though that kind of ruined dinner is that we didn't know what we were eating 90% of the time. The woman who was serving us had pretty much no English, and as you are eating in your room you only interact with that one person and so can't get help from another staff member. They do provide a written menu but it is only in Japanese (I asked if they had it in English and even the next day at reception so that we could find out what we had eaten, but No). Location is pretty good, just across an enjoyable walk across the bridge to the touristy shopping area, temple and bamboo gardens. Some rooms look out over the river, but our room was actually in a totally different building that was across the road, and we looked out onto a steep bank, but they had made it look quite nice with plants, stones etc. Sleeping is on a thin mattress which is rolled out directly onto the tatami mats that you walk around on (the staff prepare and remove all the bedding for you). This is a fun way to sleep, however be warned... if you like a soft-to-medium bed it will be an uncomfortable night as these are extremely hard. I normally like a fairly hard bed and I was surprised just how hard this was. Also the pillows are tiny (and also very hard). They provided two which worked OK for me, but my partner ended up with those two and also one of the cushions from the room to make a decent pillow. The buffet breakfast was in the main building which does look out over a canal that runs parallel to the main river. This was OK but nothing amazing. The shared onsen was quite good though it is totally indoors with no windows so feels a bit like an enclosed box, unlike most other onsens I have been to here. One thing that I did like was that they had a little sauna, and even better they had a cold water pool as well which was nice to swap back and forth between. The staff in general were very polite and good, though their English wasn't very good.
- yh007 (10/5): Very good experience - Stayed in a room with private onsen (3rd floor 鹿王) on 8/20/2018. The room is much more spacious than expected for 3 of us. Bathroom is a bit outdated but not too small. Tatami looks clean and new. The room also comes with robes/yukata for each person. The ladies got to choose their yukata from some selections though. It was hot in Kyoto but the air conditioning is strong and cool us down quickly. The view is nice on the 3rd floor except it is partially blocked while looking at the bridge. The one person private onsen tub is on the side balcony that are mostly hidden from neighbors. It takes some "training" to get into the onsen tub if you care about being seen (without clothing) from the front balcony. We requested seafood for our Kaiseki dinner and they are really good. The sculpture/carving on the melon and many other settings gave us a wonderful surprise, one course after another. Our server, Ms Kobayashi, was nice in explaining the different dishes with her limited English. Many thanks to her extra efforts to make the meals much more enjoyable. She also helped make the "bed" on tatami after finishing the dinner in your room. The breakfast next morning is very traditional Japanese and served by the same server. We feel bad and were wondering if she has to over work for late night and early next morning. The portion for breakfast seems much more fulfilling due to the abundance of rice. The building we stayed was very quiet. There is an underground connection to common bath areas and the other for-rent private onsen room. Did not use them though. We arrived early in Arashiyama after a short walk from the Hankyu-Arashiyama station. Dropped off the carry-on luggages at the hotel before check in time to visit the rest of Arashiyama. We also took the shuttle to JR station after checking out. Ms Kobayashi was there again to bow to us while seeing us off. The one night package is expensive but worth it for our first ryokan + Kaiseki + private onsen tub experience. Next time though, might just rent the bigger private 4-person onsen-only facility separately.
- nadeemies (4/5): Renovation desperately needed in rooms - Food just ok - Second time staying in a Ryokan in Japan, and was let down by this experience for the price. Paying almost $300/person felt extremely ovepriced as the rooms were terribly kept. There were stains on the carpet, tarnished walls, damaged furniture, and a very small and uncomfortable bathroom and shower. Furthermore, the Yukata I was given was also stained! Nasty. The onsen was ok. The view was nice overlooking the river. The food was average at best. I have paid half this price at other Ryokans and received a much better exerience. The staff were friendly, but did not speak much English. This is only a problem in that when food was served we had no idea what each item was. It's a much better experience when the staff can explain each dish to you. Breakfast wasn't very good at all...the difference was substantial.
- user1232018 (10/5): Amazing experience! - It was the most amazing experience! It was definetly worth the money, though it was quite expensive. We only stayed one night because of the price, but that was for sure enough time to experience a traditional stay! We had the traditional multi-course meal Kaiseki, and though neither my dad or I liked the food, it was so much fun trying! We felt like we were royals while staying here. I definetly would'nt be without the stay, and I will for sure recommend it!
- KSD093 (10/5): An experience! - Really glad we stayed here, just for one night. It was so much fun and such an experience. Traditional Japanese guest house. We were encouraged to wear kimonos which were provided in the room. Staff were so polite and friendly. The experience involved traditional Japanese dining, on the floor with traditional Japanese food (not good for fussy eaters), going to the private onsen (additional cost), sleeping on futon, which was surprisingly comfortable.
- Zann_w (8/5): Pricey but comfortable, a bit renovation needed to be done though - Being one of the most famous onsen resorts in Kyoto, I had a higher expectation on overall services and quality of stay. I was quite contented and felt refreshing in my one night accommodation. Stayed in the old building ( I forgot the name), the public bath was of standard, shiseido bath and beauty products, cool wifi, easily access to tourist spots, comfy fudons, caring staff ... my dinner was served in my room and the seafood was fresh and seasonal. Dishes were exquisitely served. But then i needed to go underway to another building for my breakfast. A bit soso even the hot pot tofu ( famous dish at arashiyama) served. The onsen at my building was pretty small and I think 6 to 8 ppl at a time should have reached the capacity. I was quite impressed the staff warmed my boots before I went outside (outdoor temperature was 7 degrees at that time). Yet the wall paper and furniture worn out and really needed repairing works. The scent at concierge, corridors and lift caught my attention, that was truly pleasant and made me feel good. I gave 4/5 since I paid 2.7k HKD for it after all.
- 893nilsv (4/5): Totally overpriced - This ryokan is a rip off. We payed about 230€ pP/night but its really far from worth it. The hotel is old and not nice. Staff is unfriendly (eg the witress serving the dinner didnt laugh once...). You can clearly tell that this is a tourist trap and no Japanese would stay here. I recommend to go to Hakone or some other famous Onsen place, where you spend the same amount for the luxury ryokan and stay at a cheap hotel when visiting Arashiyama.
- nibianc2 (10/5): Great Ryokan - So glad to have had this experience. Service was excellent and the food was artfully presented. There are instructions in your room on how to enjoy the onsen if you wish. The town is very pretty as well.
- gracec653 (10/5): Wonderful experience - My fiancé and I have booked the room with an indoor air bath, the package also covered dinner and breakfast. It is not the cheapest hot spring hotel, but it definitely worth it values! The dining experience was amazing, the food was great! The staffs was really friendly and helpful :) it is a great place for special occasion celebration!
- katherinel495 (10/5): Great onsen hotel just next to the arashiyama station - Great onsen hotel which serves Kaiseki in your room for dinner and breakfast in the banquet hall. The onsen are separated into male and female rooms. You can pay more for a private onsen. Tatami on the floor which is great. Rooms overlooking the river in Arashiyama, the temples and bamboo forest is just 5 mins walk away. Great location and food! They welcome children too and children (depending on age) will be able to enjoy Kaiseki meals or share with parents. Futon will be provided with some charges.
- Tiffany2803 (6/5): Good location - We stayed one night at Togetsutei. We called the reception upon arriving at the station and within 10 mins, a minivan came to pick us up. Very efficient. The location is great, just across the bridge. The dinner wasn't fantastic and there were some food which the children couldn't eat. But to be fair, we should have informed the kitchen more specifically. Portion wise, it was not really sufficient for the adults. We much preferred the Japanese breakfast which was very good. One disappointing point is the customer service after we left the hotel. We found that we left our little girl's blanket in the hotel room. We had gone for breakfast before packing out bags. When we came back to the room after breakfast, the staff had cleared away the futons, together with her blanket. We packed everything else and forgot that her blanket was missing. We checked out and moved to another hotel at Kyoto station. When we realised that we left her blanket at the hotel, we called Togetsutei and the reply was there was no blanket in the room and not in the futon. My girl started crying as it's more like a comfort blanket. So we got our new hotel's reception to call them again to speak in Japanese. This time, Togetsutei told them that the house keeping has left and they had to check in the morning. This was within minutes from the time we called them. But the reply given to us was a simple "no blanket". This showed that they were simply not bothered to check properly for us. Perhaps it would be a hassle for them to have to send back to us? The reply the following day was still a "no blanket". We are very sure that we brought the blanket as we packed a small bag for our 1 night stay and she was using the blanket when she slept. It was because the futons were cleared away while we were out for breakfast that it was lost. We thought that since we were still in Kyoto, we would still be able to retrieve it. But no. It was not a pleasant stay after that, with a sobbing child at night...
- Greg_1616 (10/5): A great experience; costly but very special. - We stayed here for 1 night, after going back and forth on whether or not to try the traditional Ryokan thing, given how expensive most of them seemed to be (the equivalent of 400 - 1,000 USD for a single night!) We were able to book a mid-week night at Togetsutei near the bottom of that range, and are very glad we did, though obviously the cost may be a turn-off for many. Understand, though, that the highlight of the Ryokan experience (at least at Togetsutei) was a private 8-course meal served to us in our room by a lovely staff member. The food was outstanding, and the presentation like nothing I've seen before. That alone is an experience that you'd expect to pay perhaps 200 USD for in the US, and our stay also included an impressive traditional multi-course breakfast served in the main eating hall. The price seems much more appropriate once you understand that you're really paying for the overall experience which was perhaps the highlight of our trip. Had a great session in the onsen/hot-tub; in our opinion, paying the ~20 USD for a 45-min private Onsen session was an absolute no-brainer. Our accommodations themselves were rather basic, but that's what we were told to expect by others. The room could probably be vastly improved with just a repaiting and carpet cleaning. But it was lovely, and had a nice sitting area. The sleeping mats and pillows they set up for you to sleep are basic but comfortable enough...a little tossing and turning throughout the night, but we got a reasonable amount of sleep all things considered. It's absolutely a pricey evening, but was like nothing else on our trip and definitely one of the experiences that will stay with us for a long time. Thank you Togetsutei and staff!
- Verified traveler (6/5): - There is no outdoor hot spring only indoor one and there is no vending machine for drinks after using the hot spring. The dinner is quite standard, food is ordinary. However, the location is very good for visiting Arashiyama.

- John (10/5): Location is close to shop,park and train station - The Japanese style hotel is centrally located and very close to shops, parks and train stations. Staff are always helpful. Facility is clean and quiet.
