Guest Reviews
- Marcia (6/5): - Sadly it was not quiet when I stayed here. The hostel was full and many people trickled in on. A Friday night between 10pm- 12am. Lots of loud talking in front of the rooms and talking down the hallways to others who in the common room. Noisy people in the common room.
I wouldn’t recommend Room#1 - it’s right beside the common rooms and kitchen and you hat everything. Beds are on the harder sister.
Based on other accommodations in the area, not sure the cost justified the experience. Cleanliness was excellent and its a cute place - just not great for a single person I guess.
- Alan (10/5): - Pool table.
- lilla (10/5): - Wonderfully organised and very clean.
- Cheryl (10/5): - This was a fantastic place to stay in Cumberland. Right in the centre of the village, easily walkable to everything. Great common room and kitchen.
- Jean (10/5): - Riding Fool Hostel never disappoints. Staff have always been friendly and helpful. Rooms and washrooms are clean and well stocked.
The only issue we had, given the warm seasonal temperatures, was that the rooms were uncomfortably hot at night. Fans were available however, they were not quite enough to keep the air flowing.
Maybe an unreasonable suggestion but a vent at bottom of door and top of door frame would likely assist in drawing in the air-conditioned air from the common areas.
Otherwise, amazing stay as usual. See you next year!
- Linda (10/5): - Funky. Interesting. The staff were terrific.
- Edwin (10/5): - Great for our overnight stay, lady at reception was very helpful, facilities excellent.
- Maggie (6/5): - The property was clean. Very unique place. The staff was very trusting which was very nice, thank you so much for your hospitality.
- JA (10/5): - Very clean and well-kept, also comfortable and cozy. The perfect break!
- James (10/5): - 5 star
- Jerzy (10/5): - Good as usual
- David Randall (10/5): - Wonderful common area - well stocked kitchen area. Everything you could need.
- Jill (10/5): - Well equipped. Bright and clean. Friendly staff
- Shantz Mae (10/5): - The place is very nice and clean. It is along the road but it is very quiet. The kitchen and washrooms are very clean as well. 1000/100
- Kurtis (10/5): - Cumberland rules and so does this hostel!
- Terry (10/5): - Charming, fun place
- mary (10/5): - I would recommend this place! Was great location for our family mountain bike holiday
- Parini (10/5): - Très belle auberge
- Althea (8/5): - We enjoy.d the old building which is clean and comfortable. However, we had a double bed up against the wall which made it difficult to get up in the night. We would like to book a queen bed if that is possible as my husband is a big man, another time. Thanks Althea
- Lucia (10/5): - It is definitely worthy to go there and spend time over. We wish to have an opportunity to stay longer ☺️
- Jody (8/5): - Super quaint, private, quiet and comfortable for a hostel. The common area was incredibly relaxing in the evening, like being at home. I’d stay here again, for sure.
- Donald (8/5): - It’s a cool spot. Has large shared living spaces. Great shared kitchen. The wifi however doesn’t work. No one to contact to fix it.
- nelson (10/5): - Very unique and interesting property. Clean, comfortable, well equipped for relaxing, cooking your own meals, and enjoying Cumberland. I wouldn't stay anywhere else.
- Alana (10/5): - Great experience at this hostel. Clean safe quiet, well, equipped, kitchen and funky vibe. Good communication. In a charming small community. Would stay here again absolutely.*****!
- Alexander (10/5): - Awesome locale for a Bike vacation.
Showed up and parked across the street and didn't have to move the car all weekend. Bike room and storage on the first level, large rooms upstairs. Staff was very friendly and had great riding recommendations. Common area was better stocked with amenities than I thought (full kitchen and large fridge) as well as pool table, couches, darts. No freezer than I could see (so don't bring anything that needs that). Location is 2 blocks from the trails, less than 3-4 minutes to the bottom of the climb trail. 5 blocks to the jump park, easy walk to restaurants. Highly recommend, will definitely be back!
- Sara (10/5): - Fantastic location. So clean. Will be back.
- Verified traveler (10/5): A great stay in the heart of Cumberland - Riding Fool is a hidden gem. Located on the main street in Cumberland, there are great restaurants, a brewery, a bakery and a great bar located all within a block or two. The trails are a short ride down the street. Rooms are very clean, bathrooms are clean and located close to the rooms. A great stay.
- Karen (10/5): - Very quaint
- Alan (10/5): - Bike friendly
- Farah (10/5): - This is a cool cyclist friendly hostel in a older building with tons of character. Convenient bike racks and bike wash area. Because the building is older it is not the most sound proof but everyone seemed aware of this fact and used lowered voices and light footsteps. Weekends might be a bit louder but I had no issues. I was only going to stay one night but liked it so much, I stayed another night.
- Rob (10/5): - Great location and well set up for the mt bike enthusiast. Walk to eateries, groceries, pubs... easy ride to the trails, bike wash. The perfect hostel!
- Jean (10/5): - Wonderful in every way. We will be back!
- Sara (10/5): - It was all good.We enjoyed the space.
- Don (8/5): - Neat little place to stay, certainly out of the ordinary. I wasn't sure what to expect, but the place was well kept and comfortable. The shared space was unusual, but a chance to meet others and enjoy a quiet evening.
Could have done with a little less "Covid-fear" in the signage, but everyone I met was pretty relaxed about it.
- melanie (10/5): - Second stay here. Love it!
- Alain (10/5): Home base for Mt Washington ski trip - Spent the weekend in Cumberland for access to Mt Washington. The place was impeccably clean and appreciated the Covid 19 protocol in place. This is my second stay and will certainly return and recommend to friends.
- Amber (10/5): - I love the cozy, humbling atmosphere, and the great Jenga game they keep in the back!
- Andy (4/5): - Difficult to contact.
- Eric (10/5): - Fire place and lots of bathrooms made it a special stay
- Erin (10/5): - Fantastic stay! Central in downtown Cumberland, easy access to shops and restaurants. Very clean and comfortable property with lots of amenities!
- S (10/5): - Spacious rooms, clean ed
- Megan (6/5): - This is a very well situated property in the heart of Cumberland and it was super easy to access the restaurants, bakery and cafes nearby.
The hostel itself is in a old building, so sound does carry throughout the floor and for a light sleeper like myself it was hard to go to bed when the wall are paper thin! Like most hostels the place is only as clean as others make it so I was a bit disappointed especially during COVID that people weren't a bit more conscious about cleaning up after themselves. Especially in the bathroom - clean up your hair, and underwear! :P
- Mori (10/5): - Easy walking distance to great food and drinks. The kitchen is well-stocked and the common area is spacious. If you are a family up for a biking trip this is great value.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Beautiful building, and wonderful staff. Will definitely be going back if I’m out this way.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - A wonderful hostel experience right from friendly check in! Layout is great and spacious, very clean and it’s in a terrific location in Cumberland.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Great place to stay with easy access to trails! - Great, clean, well-run hostel
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Friendly staff, funky facilities, great atmosphere, good value, very clean.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Clean, friendly, exactly what we needed. Thank you!!!
- Anthony (10/5): - Great place to stay for biking in cumberland. We are a 60 something aged couple and would rate the hostel as excellant. Well maintained and clean as a whistle.
- Timoteo (8/5): Tim's Review - The hostel felt like living in the coùntry side - no aircon & TV. The room was hot from the afternoon sun but was cooler after sunset
No window screen & insects come in cos windows were open overnight. The living, dining, kitchen & bath rooms were all clean & organized. No staff present overnight to ask for help, though seemed safe.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Super friendly staff! Fun place to stay!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - A beautifully updated heritage property. Warm, clean, and cozy. Excellent staff.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Clean, accommodating, games room , fireplace, beds
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Very clean and friendly, we enjoyed our stay, nice that it is in town
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Awesome place to stay. Staff are really friendly, it’s clean and tidy, and great atmosphere. We will definitely be coming back here again!
- Ryan (10/5): Very clean and friendly - Really friendly, clean hostel. A really good experience.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Awesome staff. Awesome kitchen for self-catering...... everything you could possibly need for cooking. Two small grocery stores taking only a couple minutes walk. Great common area for relaxing with a pool table and fire place. Huge storage area for your recreational equipment. We stayed in a dorm room..... very large, individual lockers, lamp for each bed. Very comfortable beds.
- Marnie (10/5): - This hostel is so rad. Loved it and would stay again.
- Francois (10/5): - The check-inn was easy, the host showed me around, the room was great, showers clean, there’s a fire place in the common area, the kitchen is well equipped. You get much more here than a cheap hotel.
- Fadi (10/5): - Can't recommend this place enough. Maya who checked us in was very friendly and had our 5 year old wrapped around her little finger! The place was spotless and the kitchen was very well stocked with every gadget you may need. Showers great and the beds were comfortable.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Perfect for Biking - Easy check-in. Friendly and helpful staff. Perfect location. Bike wash out back.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Fantastic place that went above and beyond my expectations. Highly recommended
- Saeid (10/5): - Staying at this hostel was a pleasant experience. It is clean and comfortable. The staff is really helpful and friendly. Brooke, the woman at front desk, helped us with printing our papers and sharing much valuable information.
- Brianna (10/5): - Honestly the best hostel I’ve ever stayed in. The whole place was so clean, and the staff were so friendly and helpful. Will definitely be recommending this place to everyone passing through the town.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Staff are great, facility and rooms are very clean and all guests were quiet and respectful of each other in the common areas. Recommended!
- Kathleen (8/5): - A great option in the heart of Cumberland to take advantage of all the Comox Valley has to offer!
- Gayle (8/5): - This is an excellent hostel. Super clean. Lots of space. Fits the hipster, athletic vibe of this small place with a focus on mountain biking. The town is great with good food choices, photo ops abound, and it is a great 2-day stop if you like those historic places in BC with quirky, rustic charm. Private rooms available.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - I like that there was individual control of heat in the room. We were never cold. Clean rooms. Creaky floor though. It was tough to sleep in with other guests walking around early in the morning.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Noise late at night. Could have had room away from all the noise.
- Steve (10/5): - This is a charming old building but inspite of it's funk factor,it's very well maintained and staff do an excellent job of keeping it clean.
- Emily (6/5): - Beautiful old building, loved it's charm. Other guests were loud and obnoxious til well after midnight and up at 6am. You can hear everything anyone is doing in this place. If you're looking for a restful nights sleep this is not the place. Comfy bed though and lovely sheets.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Great location, conviniently near all the restaurants and brewery. Very clean. Bike cleaning station outside.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Like a home away from home.. Comfortable, great bed, great amenities.
- Julian (10/5): Riding Fool hostel - Nice hostel lovely people, great staff
- Verified traveler (8/5): - We loved everything about the property, it was clean, close to biking trails, nice kitchen and common room, inexpensive & right in town. Our only issue was that the windows in our room had no screens and mosquitoes came in at night. Otherwise I would give Riding Fools a 10/10!
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Great clean place but walls are paper thin and even though the pool room was far from our bedroom we could hear every ball played and every word of every discussion. Room however was clean and bathrooms clean.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - It was a great building. Very charming. The kitchen and common area were very large.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Great location on the main (bust still pretty quite) street. Very friendly and helpful staff. Restaurants, cafes and a great brew pub are just down the street.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Clean, great location, friendly and helpful staff.
Would recommend.
- Ron (4/5): Maybe in a universe long ago - This was a hostel, and, for the price, it was okay. However, it was an old converted building and almost had a university dorm room feel to it. The room was pretty spartan, and it was an additional two dollars if you wanted to rent a towel. To be fair, the owners are trying to make the environment reasonable, but it wasn’t for us. The downtown core of the community is pretty old and from another era. The town felt like an old carpet that needed to be taken out and shaken, or completely replaced.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Neat Main Street location, interesting historic building. Adequate basic room and furnishings. Bed way too hard, only about 4 inches of foam. All rooms were located on the second floor, This was not indicated on the website. As a person with mobility challenges (I use a cane), the large staircase was daunting and difficult to maneuver. I would not recommend for persons with a physical disability.
