Guest Reviews
- Recentguest (4/5): - The manager was friendly and helpful when the hot water tap didn't get hot. He stressed it was a seasonal operation and they were shutting down at the end of October. It was a cool night 3C.
The room was cold and we had to crank up the baseboard heater to full to get it warm enough. The bathroom was ice cold. Could not take a shower as the floors were too cold. Perhaps in the warmer months this property would suffice.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Not far off highway 401. Close to downtown and boat cruises.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - It’s a good trip for me. Motel is clean, room is big and it’s very close to wharf.
- Margaret (8/5): needs some updating - The booking and getting in were good. A bit of a musty smell.
Staff was excellent. room needed work.
- Utkarsh (10/5): - Excellent place to stay . Awesome & friendly staff
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Very decent for the price. The beds were comfortable. The room had a mini-fridge and microwave.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - It’s like a typical motel, but the beds and pillows were exceptionally comfortable!!! The gentleman at the front desk was very friendly and helped us get checked in quickly. Only downside was that a family with lots of kids had rented the 2 rooms beside ours and clearly had the adjoining door open between them because their kids were running back and forth like a herd of elephants which shook our whole room; I could even feel the shaking while I was laying in bed! They’d always rein them by 11pm, so at least we still got a good sleep, none of which was the motel’s fault, just bad parenting.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - What we didn't like was the room felt like it was dirty and smelt, we didn't unpack or take anything out because you didn't want your stuff to touch anythins
- Verified traveler (2/5): - Nothing spectacular about this motel, as a matter of fact the physical look isn’t good at all , it’s very old and not renovated to push up the standard . In my opinion I think this type of motel shouldn’t be listed on the website . There are flies/insects by the entrance light into the room always waiting for door to be opened and go inside. And I was also charged $20.00 for an extra guest which was not provided for. My experience at this motel was horrible.
- Verified traveler (2/5): - The room weren't nice the plugin in the bathroom wood work no plag for the tub you can see outside the door when it's closed the bed is hard and the rugs are filthy dirty I would suggest this to anybody just motel and I found a handful of thumbtacks in the driveway
- Verified traveler (6/5): - It is inexpensive, clean, quiet and a couple of minutes to centertown. No frills lodging. The facilities we occupied were worn but in working order. Note the outdoor pool was out of service and needs repair..
- Verified traveler (4/5): - This property is way different from pictures. When we arrived, they were replacing the roof, taking electricity from our room i.e. workers walking into our room with boots ...
This property is fine to stay for sleeping but absolutely over priced.
Also bed sheets were dirty.
- HH (4/5): - It was convenient for a family of six but there was (and still is) an unauthorized charge on my credit card. And the only phone number I can find for the motel goes to a voicemail that doesn't even say the name of the motel, so I cannot discuss the issue with them. I'd hesitate to go back or recommend it.
- Verified traveler (2/5): - This property should not be on Expedia site.
Misleading customers.not fair for other property when serving better and same cost.
I offer one of your stuff for free one night at my cost.
This property should be closed.
On other side your expedia agent hang up on me while reviewing the issue and never call back fo follow up.
- Victor (8/5): - We had a lovely 2-day trip to Gananoque. We did a 1,000 Islands boat cruise, and saw some local sites. The manager of the hotel was very nice and friendly. He gave us restaurant dining tips that were outstanding. He also helped us with our trip away. We wanted to go to Kingston and he recommended that we take Hwy 2 because it would take us right downtown Kingston. We wanted to avoid the 401.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - The owner has just taken over this place and is trying to do it up. It is aged, but has potential.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Everything, over priced and not as advertised. What more can be said.
- Verified traveler (2/5): - No hot water! Run down property. Not comfortable. We did not stay for breakfast.
- Kk (6/5): - Close to the boat cruise and other store restaurants need more cleanliness
- Fay (4/5): - Property was rin down - needed paint and repairs eg carpet was taped in main area. TV Volume control did not work lighting in main room poor
Breakfast consisted of coffee nade with local water - sulfur? Chlorine? Jam was almost gone except for bottom of jar scrappings no fruit cookies were broken and soggy commercial orange juice and yogurt were fine
Trivago advertized the room for $99 but when I went to the site it was #129 (original price)
- Ben (10/5): - Family of 6 (4 young kids). Stayed one night and it totally met our needs with a room with three queen beds. Very friendly front desk, clean room and simple contintental. All for a very affordable price.
- Verified traveler (2/5): - We didn’t like anything
Very old not clean mosquito everywhere noisy fridge very little hot water
Overall not healthy
- Mark (8/5): - A no-frills, clean, quiet hotel. Very little in the way of amenities, but well priced and in a good location on the edge of town.
- Ricardo (8/5): - Good staff great price that included breakfast will be back one more time Saturday
- JS (6/5): - Did not realize pool was closed and under repair, was not mentioned on Expedia website. Typical roadside motel
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Property was ok. Pool not ooened location was good.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - We had a great stay at the Gateway Motel! The hosts are charming, the room was simple but adequate, everything was super-clean, and the beds were very comfortable. We loved the family room, which provided everything we needed for our family of five. If you are looking for new, modern and fancy, this is not for you. However, if you are looking for a clean and comfortable space at a reasonable price, the Gateway Motel delivers. The only thing that disappointed us was that the pool was not open while we were there.
- Jag (2/5): - It's true, it's an old hotel, but I think that for the price you can get many better things. In my case I will not return to this hotel first because they offer services that they really do not have. Example pool did not work and the breakfast does not really exist. A disappointment.
- Jorge (2/5): -
S e puede conseguir un mejor lugar por este precio. Es cierto que es un poco viejo el
You can get a better place for this price. It is true that the site is a little old, but I think what bothers me most is to offer services that do not really have, such as the pool does not work or breakfast included (there really is not a breakfast).
- Verified traveler (6/5): - The place was very dated, but it was clean. Staff was friendly. Continental breakfast was standard. Nothing special, but serviceable place. I thought it was expensive for what it was. We stayed in several other places in Canada for the same place that were much nicer.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Its was clean and felt like home.
Very friendly staff
- Verified traveler (2/5): - the ceiling was sagging, the room stank, they left the outside lights on all night which reflected in the room, the curtain did not fit the windows correctly
- Clare (8/5): You get what you pay for (in a good way) - You get what you pay for - the owner was nice and the shower was surprisingly good. Check in/out was also really easy. However, the beds are a little hard, the breakfast fairly basic, and you are right on the edge of town (driving distance rather than walking distance). Overall, we would stay again though as it is so cheap.
- Laura (6/5): Ok - Run down but the price was reasonable
- DeAnna (4/5): Should have tried to book elsewhere - The owner was super nice!! I’m not sure whether he is in the process of updating or not but the place could sure use a facelift. The room was very dated and carpet was badly stained. The bed was not comfortable at all. The free breakfast was very limited (we passed on it)
- Kathy (8/5): - Older motel very clean on bed and bathroom towels. Motel staff Dillion was very friendly and helpful. Only negative was when 2 other families arrived beside us late at night with no respect for others already sleeping.
- Beverly (6/5): BEV - Our first impression upon arrival was that we wanted to go to another hotel/motel. The appearance of the motel was not attractive, and when we entered the room we were disappointed. However we asked the owner to transfer us to another room and he was very accomodating so we felt better however we did not enjoy the prices we were offered initially and ended up paying $168.00 for the night, I think when Hotels.com advertise their deals, tbey should be a bit more honest in their illustration of the rooms they are giving you the deal on. Our expectations were not met however the staff at the Gateway needs to be commended for their excellent customer service.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Needs updating and maintenance, paint etc, good location though
- Huong (4/5): - It not bad room is old not clean we r respect more clean but service is good
- Russ (2/5): - There was no pool, as advertised. You cannot turn off the TV without unplugging it...
- Sylvain (2/5): Never again - The room looked and smelled awful. For 255$ sorry not worth it. On the hotel site it stated seasonal outdoor pool. It was really difficult to entertain the children of ages 2to 10. The reason I booked was for the outdoor pool. I think that the pool area has not been used for a very long time. Windows dirty. No one took their shower.
- Cindy (4/5): Cheap place - If you like spiders, this is the best place to stay. The poll was out of service.
- Frank (8/5): - Nice hotel...staff as so upbeat and positive
Enjoyed our stay immensely
- Boaters (8/5): - The pool outside gave the hotel an appearance of lack of attention and cleanliness. The walls are pretty thin we could hear the folks in another room. Unfortunately the folks beside us came in at 2:15 am in a drunken stuper and woke everyone up.
The room itself was clean. There was mood in bathroom, but it was clean overall.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - this motel needs repair and maintenance. it did not provide value for the money I paid.
- Graham (8/5): - As long as you keep in mind, Gateway is a MOTEL in a touristy area. It’s full of character and exactly what you might expect.
- KTe (2/5): - This picture is very deceiving my room was in disrepair, it stunk, the curtains werent attached to the rod and the bathroom was mouldy. No pool, as described, our view was a dilapidated building behind our room i do not recommend this property. Even the lampshades were disgusting.
- Kathy (6/5): - Rooms could use some cosmetic upgrades, however the TV, A/C and bathroom facilities worked well.
- Bryan (2/5): - The property was on the edge of falling into complete ruin. The manager was to quick to give the Expedia cancellation #. In the 10 minutes I was there 2 others saw the condition of rooms and asked to cancel their reservations. I believe they were purposely over booking to get cancellation fees knowing few would choose to stay
- Verified traveler (4/5): - I was very disappointed because when I read about this motel aspecting better than this I was wondering to have like a summing pool ... I pay for something not really close what i was aspecting not happy
- Verified traveler (4/5): - Admittedly some renovations have been done (newish beds, new bathroom fixtures, newish towels, linens, some new windows etc) but the building is old and worn. Pool was not useable. Broken lawn chairs outside the rooms. Not really clean when you look closely. Breakfast "room" was a mish mash of furniture in various states of disrepair. Main building had windows boarded up with plywood. Very ramshackle. Location was walkable to "town" but a longish walk. Sort of the last property on King Street.
Not worth the money.
- Sue (6/5): - The manager was awesome!! He helped us in time of need. Thanks Dylan!! Room was clean but needed some up dating.
- Susan (4/5): - the beds were clean, mold on the walls. I wish they had fruit for breakfast, pool had a tree growing in it. the staff was friendly
- Javier (6/5): Motel to spend one night only - It was just okay to spend one night only.(Not recommended for longer stay) Swimming pools is not operational. Continental Breakfast is poor. The motel needs urgent repairs WIFI was very spotty and slow
- Verified traveler (4/5): - room was clean but the building and parking lot are in a terrible state, the pool was closed, no ice available.... very disappointed. The price was high for the state of the place.
- Jeff (6/5): Inexpensive motel an outskirts of town. - Inexpensive; on outskirts of town; pool but not used in several years (it was hot so it would have been nice option). Room clean but nothing special. Beds very soft (too soft). TV but the remote would not turn it on or off; had to unplug TV to turn it off. Free Breakfast consisted of coffee. It was inexpensive so you get what you pay for!
- Verified traveler (4/5): OK for the Price - Advertise nice refreshing outdoor pool which is not true. Pool out of order for the whole season!!!
- Kay (6/5): Nice clean motel. - Older motel. Owner/manager very friendly and accommodating. Very clean and beds were very comfortable. We actually had a king and queen in our room along with a fridge and microwave. Pool not functioning but weren't really going to use it anyway. Very affordable rates.
- Verified traveler (4/5): Last Resort - Pool was outdoors with no water in it to swim.
No continental breakfast.
Wi-Fi wasn't strong enough to reach our room.
Motel is dated back to the 90's with furniture/bed FROM that decade.
A/C was nice and strong tho!
Only stay if it's your last option
- sandra (6/5): Ok for the price - Front desk staff was friendly and room was clean, however it had a slight odor and the sheets had quite a strong bleach smell. The bathroom was clean for the most part, except for what appeared to be mold beside the shower, behind the bathroom door and the shower had great pressure. Not horrible for what we paid. Unfortunately the pool was not cleaned for use, which was unfortunate since we stayed during the Canada Day heat wave.
- Bhavik B (8/5): Quiet and Nice place - Good place to stay...very quiet, clean and spacious place to relax! Helpful and approachable owner. Like to recommend
- JP (4/5): Old and run down - When we arrived the room key wouldn't work. We had 2 rooms. In one the curtains didn't fit the windows, so they let light in, and in the other they were so long you tripped over them when you walked to the bed. The old t.v.s were hard to figure out how to operate, no instructions. No Kleenex anywhere. The only waste basket was in the bathroom. the caulking around the bathtub was cracked and blackened. The swimming pool was out of commission. The neighbours were noisy and kept us awake till 1:00 a.m.
- Verified traveler (4/5): Gananoque - Needs alot of work. Bed very uncomfortable. Pool full of green water. Grounds not well kept
Sheets clean room clean
- Verified traveler (8/5): Comfortable bed - The motel was quiet in the night and the bed was comfortable we all sleeped well and enjoyed the coffee and toast in the morning. All for fair price.
- Peter (4/5): Tired motel - The promised cot for a third person was not available. We had to pay significantly more money as a result. The shower barely worked. The internet reception was poor. The pool was not functioning. Very disappointing.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Worth for the money. Nice and clean room... .....
- Paul (6/5): Strictly a budget motel - Comfortable and clean beds and room
Management is polite and friendly.
But facility is dated.... strictly budget
- Verified traveler (4/5): Dated - Needed a place to stay. Didn't realize it was Thanksgiving weekend as we are from the States. All other hotels were booked unless we wanted to pay big $.
It served the purpose. Was quiet.
- HMS (10/5): Great - good service and room for the price we paid. very good!
- andrew (6/5): If you just need a bed cheap this was good - We booked a queen bed only but got a king and a queen. The motel was close cheap and cheerful but dated.
- sherry (8/5): Gayeway Motel - Clean rooms, very friendly staff, free continental breakfast, fridge and microwave in room
- Gates (6/5): Sleepless. - I found the beds very hard and shower had soft pressure and hot water took some time to come through the spout. It does require some work in the bathroom and around the facial portion of their building. With some renovations and softer mattresses, it would be worth what we paid as it is just outside of main city core.
- Verified traveler (8/5): got very cold at night! - overall everything was good except it got very very cold at night. no heat in the room.
- Pat (2/5): Not a good choice even at a low price - Unfortunately we cannot recommend this motel. Not well built. Not modernized. Breakfast was inedible.
- LF (2/5): Yikes! We ran away! - Didn't actually stay here. We barely got out of the car and stuck our head in the door before we ran to the office a for a partial refund due to the fact we were 20 minutes past the full refund deadline.
Free would be too much to pay to stay here.
Horror movies are filmed in nicer locations.
- Lucie (2/5): Should not be recommending this Hotel on Expedia - Very moldy smelling hotel, with patches of drywall on the walls, breakfast room horrible, food half decent.
- Prapan (4/5): Wifi is bad. never worked. - Wifi never works. Breakfast is too simple.
- Nicky (6/5): Staff is first class but it's a no frill budget. - Staff is first class, it's clean but it's a no frill budget motel.
All it needs is a little renovation and landscaping and I would give it 2 thumbs up.
- Verified traveler (2/5): Oldest motel in town. - This facility is very old and run down. The first room they gave us was atrocious. The second room was just bearable. I won't even go into detail about the condition the swimming pool was in. Even though the staff tried their best to please, we will not be going back.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - The hotel was located right off the highway for easy access.
- jay (4/5): Pics do not match current state - - wifi is non existent
- pool not functional/open. Looks like it was closed years ago
- picture of room on expedia, and what i got are not even close. And i was offered a selection of two different rooms (15-16)
- cigarette burns in every bed sheet
- this locations is worth 25% of what I paid
Pros:
The address was correct on expedia
- Patrick (8/5): - An older facility but kept very clean. Worked great for our stop along the way to the east coast . Brand new shower in our room , fresh towels, very hot hot water , and kind staff.
- Roscoe (6/5): Nice motel and great beds - Comfy beds. We had noisy neighbours with kids running and thumping next door.
The manager was extremely pleasant and nice.
- Verified traveler (4/5): Old motel - This business needs â sérious rénovation plan. This business needs â sérious rénovation plan. This business needs â sérious rénovation plan. This business needs â sérious rénovation plan. This business needs â sérious rénovation plan. This business needs â sérious rénovation plan. This business needs â sérious rénovation plan.
- Louise (4/5): Very old and outdated - It was our second choice due to availability. The web site shows a pool that looks not to bad, it was empty and full of green slime was not happy. The rooms are under construction but not by a professional contractor, our window was plexie glass and it was held in by caulking. Bathtub had mold around the rim and the room smelt. It was not worth what we paid.
- cynthia (2/5): Would never stay again - The place is old and dirty, the walls in the bathroom were filthy with about 400 plus dead bugs in the light fixture. There is a pool but it was out of service being repaired so the owner said it looked like it was not working for a few years.
- MOHAMAD (4/5): Nightmare - we could not stay in the room more than 15 minutes because of live spiders infestation.
- Michael (4/5): Gananoque motels - This motel has seen better times. It needs a complete makeover.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Amenities Not! - Upon arriving the host could not find our reservations, which made for a stressfull check-in. The curtains were worn and thin, so privacy at night was an issue. Their website amenities are not what you get eg outdoor pool. There is none! (One of the reason I booked this place). On a positive note: The bed was comfortable and the bathroom a nice size. The Continental Breakfast was excellent and plenty of coffee to go around.
- NT (8/5): Nice place for a short stay - We had 2 rooms and both were clean, spacious and comfortable. The owner of the motel was an awesome and nice person. This place is quite and near to the cruise boats. Breakfast service was good too.
- Dave (6/5): Comfy and reasonably priced. - Nice place to lay your head. Staff was very friendly and room was very clean.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Clean and adequate for the price and our needs - This an older motel at the eastern gate to Gananoque. Our room has had some updating, was clean and tidy, quite comfortable for our needs, but we needed accommodation for only one night. Some windows have been replaced, others should be. I suggest the bent mini blinds on the office windows should be replaced as they detract from a good first impression. The owner was courteous and anxious to accommodate. We would return if the need arose for a night or two.
- Philip (6/5): - The motel is n fair condition. I am surprise that they didn't accept American Express though the AE sign is displayed at the front door.
- Christine (2/5): Never again - No security on the door so had to block it with a chair, the room smelled bad, paint peeling, hooks broken and only one hanger, carpet stained. Put aside their blanket and used one we had in the car, and still slept with the clothes on. Did take photos of the condition of the room if Travelocity wants to see.
- Verified traveler (4/5): Overpriced for its so-so condition. - The hotel staff was very friendly and helpful, but the hotel rooms and buildings need substantial repair. Breakfast quality and selection is so-so at best.
Overall, the price is too high for the offered amenities and service.
- Daniel Martin (8/5): Clean and quiet. - Complimentary early check-in was problem free. Desk clerk was very entertaining and friendly. We were also offered a late check-out at no cost.
We booked a room with 1 king bed, and were pleasantly surprised that it also had a queen bed, and work desk. Although dated,
the room was spacious, clean and quiet. There were numerous other rooms occupied around us, but we didn't hear any extraneous noise during our stay.
The small air conditioner worked great ( I was kind of leery once I saw the size of the room).
We didn't partake of the free continental breakfast, so can't comment on that.
We wouldn't hesitate to return.
- Verified traveler (4/5): Close to Gananoque ferry to islands - The owner of hotel is very friendly and the place is close to the ferry to the islands. The room is clean and spacious. The only issue is the area is very noisy (hotel is next to the road) and you can hear the neighbors in the next room. Even you can hear the toilet flush of the next room in yours.
- christi (10/5): Cheap and Cheerful - The Gateway in is cheap and cheerful. You get what you pay for and we were happy with what we got.
- Kim (8/5): Good value - For the price the room was very good, a little cold at first but finally warmed up, neat and tidy, spotlessly clean, helpful staff.
- Ed (4/5): Disappointing - We had two problems. The room was heated by a baseboard heater that was behind the drapes, so the room was cold. It was about 8C outside. The manager brought us a portable heater, which eventually warmed the room enough for sleeping.
In the morning my wife plugged a travel hair dryer into the only outlet in the bathroom, in the light fixture, and it killed power to the whole room--lights, TV, heater. The manager had to re-set the breaker.
We knew that this was not a 4-star, but this one is not even a good 2-star.
