Guest Reviews
- Susanne (10/5): - Raven ist eine wunderbare Gastgeberin, die jeden Morgen einen Früchttraum auf der Terrasse serviert. Die Lage in der üppigen Vegetation am Meer und am Lava Feld ist einzigartig
- Karl (10/5): I'll be blessed to be able to visit again. - Raven, Mark, and Becky were fantastic hosts, and if their description aligns to what you suspect you're looking for you will love your stay. You'll be staying on the Red Dirt Road with two people who love the area, and are eager to help midwife whatever you're looking to get out of your visit: Prayerful, or partying. Rejuvenating, or energetically active. Overall, everything is perfect. But in the interest of providing a critique to ensure people know a real human is writing this: The outdoor bathtub was a bit janky.
- Ralf (10/5): Amazing location combining the rough coast with the volcano experience. - The owners, Raven and Mark, were outstandingly friendly. They provided all the support possible and gave us a lot of local information you won't find in tours or books. But the stunning fact here is that you live right at the oceanfront, at a lava field going into the sea. As sad as it has been for the community that was destroyed years ago, it offers a unique experience with private beach access, giving you stunning mornings with the rough sea, the palm trees, and the chance to be completely alone at the rocky beach. The breakfast, freshly made and offered on the terrace with a perfect view, has no comparison. As described, this is a family-inclusive stay, distinct from all-inclusive resorts, with a personalised flair. It is a little bit far from grocery stores or restaurants, but it is perfect as a base for exploring the Volcano National Park during the day and having a quiet refuge for the night when you have a car. You must get used to the frog noise, or better, bring some earplugs for the night.
- Sabine (10/5): We enjoyed every day there. - Great place, beautiful garden, delicious breakfast, we had even an electric kettle to boil water for tea in our room and fresh fruits in the fridge. Raven and Marc are great hosts, we had everything we needed.
- Angelica (10/5): Wonderful and calm. Definitely a great spot if you want to relax. - The peace and relaxation it provides. Easy access to coast line, lava flows, watch the sun set, hear the birds and frogs singing. NA
- Skeggi (10/5): If you have not experienced Ma’ukele, then you must. There is nothing like it. -
- Charles (10/5): A wonderful stay that energized us, informed us, and made us feel like family. - Great lodge if you are looking for a quiet place by the sea! The hosts are excellent and make you feel at home. Amazing breakfast is served on the deck, providing a great view of jungle, lava, and ocean! Excellent WiFi if needed. Excellent location for exploring the nature of the south side of the island abc the volcano park. No complaints at all!
- Victoria (10/5): -
- Alesha (7/5): - Raven and Mark were wonderful hosts and very accomodating. There was a complimentary bowl of freshly picked fruit, cool drinks and banana bread in our fridge on arrival. Raven also makes a lovely fruit breakfast. The house is about 50m from the beach (not swimmable due to strong currents and waves) but beautiful to see.
It's worth noting that there are 4 cats roaming in and around the house. They are very cute and friendly but worth knowing in case you have cat allergies. We initially booked the family suite but didn't realise there was no AC in that room (that was our mistake as its clear in the info on booking.com). The family suite has three large beds in there. The toilet is attached in a small separate bathroom but the shower and toilet are outdoors in the garden which we didn't realise. We realised this wouldn't work well for us and our young son, and Raven was very kind and got the upstairs room prepared instead (which has its own en suite) and we were able to stay there. There is AC in that room. The balcony/sea views are from a communal living space upstairs.
- Stéphanie (10/5): Local et au top - La gentillesse des hôtes, le côté cosy et typique du logement, le grand lit tendre, le déjeuner copieux et local Rien
- Meghan (9/5): -
- lahav (8/5): - The large room is cozy for a well-equipped and special stay. Lacking a sink, the shower outside is a special experience. Every morning you got a halloumi fruit salad. Lovely people hosting. The husband recommends recommendations for very successful trips. In the big room: There is no air conditioner , stagnant air, no sink In the kitchenette, I would improve the shower so that the curtain does not stick to me when I take a shower. There was nowhere to wash dishes.
- Tymofii (10/5): Greatest vocation ever - It was a greatest stay in my entire life, best stuff ever, Mark will help you to get best places on Big Island and Raven will get best service with the best breakfast daily. Property is greatly organised and and has all you need. I enjoyed my stay so much None
- Maria (3/5): -
- Stefan (10/5): A special place in the paradisiacal south of Big Island - We stayed here for 5 days and had a fantastic time at Ma'ukele Lodge. The warm hospitality of Raven and Marc is second to none and you almost feel like part of the family. Raven created an artfully prepared and super healthy breakfast for us every morning. We also got an upgrade to the suite, which has a private garden area with an outdoor shower. The suite is super equipped, there are fresh towels every day and all the necessary utensils for the beach including snorkelling kit etc. are also available. The coast with its breathtaking lava landscape is just 2 minutes from the house. Marc is a walking encyclopaedia for Hawaiian culture and the nature of the Big Islands.
We felt completely at home and would come back any time - many thanks to you Raven and Marc! Nothing
- Angelina (9/5): The real hawaiian experience - Natur, Meer & Vulkan - Tolle und sehr hilfsbereite Gastgeber. Jeden Morgen ein frisches gesundes Frühstück mit Blick aufs Meer. Jeden Tag Zimmerreinigung und frische Handtücher. Tolle Lage für alle die Zeit in der Natur verbringen möchten. The real hawaiian experience 😃
- Rene (10/5): Geile Unterkunft , jederzeit wieder. Vertraut Eurem Navi .
- Erik (10/5): Unique bed and breakfast experience - It’s a unique experience, and we loved it.
There were three large beds on our room, and spacious enough for a family of five (All adults).
Great beds, superb breakfast, super friendly hosts, clean room.
The nature on this place of the island is beautiful and different from anything we have seen before.
We LOVED it, and it was probably one of the highlights during our three weeks in Hawaii. This definitely added another dimension to our vacation. Nothing - but this place is probably not for everyone. If you don’t like nature too close, maybe this isn’t for you. Frogs will make a lot of noise in the evening (but get quite in the night), small geckos will visit you during breakfast.
- Sina (10/5): Magical - A wonderful stay at Ma’ukele Lodge on Big Island’s east coast
We stayed at Ma’ukele Lodge from July 6th to 10th — and had an unforgettable time.
Raven and Mark are truly warm and welcoming hosts. They made us feel right at home, with Raven’s delicious homemade breakfasts and Mark’s great advice on what to see and do around the island.
The lodge itself is full of character, set in beautiful surroundings with a lush tropical garden.
If you’re looking for an authentic place to stay on the east side of Big Island, we can highly recommend Ma’ukele Lodge.
Thank you, Raven and Mark, for making our stay so special! We will never forget this place - Mahalo.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Lovely stay - We enjoyed our stay at this off-the-beaten path bnb. Hosts were very informative and welcoming.
Stay here if you want to fall asleep to the sounds of frogs and birds, shower under the moonlight, and breakfast with the geckos. There’s no A/C but plenty of fans kept us cool.
- Nora (10/5): a truly magical place - magical place, full of nature, wonderful breakfast with ocean view, encounter fruit geckos and many different birds, lovely hosts, true hawaiian experience
- Stephen (10/5): - Outside shower was pleasant experience once I got used to idea! Walk to lava beach on property was extraordinary experience. Breakfast Food was excellent. Hosts were generous, kind and thoughtful. Lack of central air was disappointing but numerous fans helped a lot and open screened windows let breezes in. Still humid though. Loud Background noise of night critters was not a problem. Actually soothing and comforting after a day of traveling.
- David (10/5): HIDDEN GEM - I loved everything this place has to offer. Best place to stay near Hilo. It has it all and more. Without the luxury of a resort. It has a welcome home feel and vibe. Has coqui frogs singing you to sleep all night.
Has beach access out back. Has multiple flowers and fruit trees throughout the property. This place is a hidden Gem. Raven and Mark are some of the sweetest and most humble people you'll meet. With so much knowledge of the island. They'll share whatever you'd like to know with a great history lesson.
Raven makes the best breakfast, so forget eating out. It's worth staying and experiencing what she has to offer.. I didn't want to leave, but I'll definitely be back. Parking is a little tight, but luckily, I had no issues with someone hitting my parked rental.
- Hilary (10/5): Sweet as Strawberry Papaya - If you are the sort of person who travels because you love learning, marveling at the beauty of the world, or seek the soul healing balm found in moments of divinity like petting a relaxed kitty the color of a lava flow while listening to the ocean mix with sounds of a Hawaiian tune under a sky filled with stars- well this is place for you. As Raven said the morning we departed in the rain, it’s a blessing. Everything about what she and Mark have created and share truly is. Nothing.
- Hess (8/5): Always wonderful to stay with Raven. Photo is from their front deck, enjoying a superb breakfast. -
- Anne (10/5): Exceptional - The lodge is a little paradise and Raven and Marc are two very unique people. Everything was perfect
- Lindsay (10/5): A relaxing home away from home experience - Amazing location. Hidden gem
- Paula (10/5): Exceptional - The breakfast was superb and the owners so helpful and friendly. Very relaxing place and hawaiian vibe.
- Peter (10/5): Stay anywhere else and you miss out. - If you stay anywhere else, you would miss out as this is a very special place.
Aloha spirit is alive.
Hotels can not give you this unique experience.
- Robert (9/5): Superb - Such a unique experience. Raven and Mark's place is in the woods right near what used to be the beach but is now old lava flow. We had the guest suite and the space was large, with a huge private garden attached where you could shower outdoors. The frogs and birds were loud but somehow relaxing.
Breakfast was the most amazing fruit plate, along with some fresh yogurt (and anything else you might want). Raven and Mark know so much about the island and it's history, volcanic and otherwise.
The fridge was stocked with fruit and other treats for us, and there were any toiletries we needed. We felt like we were staying with old friends in some sort of garden paradise. It was a bit of a hike (~15 minute drive) to get dinner. Finding the place, especially in the dark, can be a bit of a challenge the first time.
- Sheila (10/5): Hawaiian hospitality to the MAX! - Off the beaten track, but close to town amenities- exactly what we were looking for! The breakfast was spectacular! Raven and Mark were very knowledgeable about the area and steered us to some beautiful spots to explore! We were able to walk out to the recent lava flows from their property to watch the waves crash on the cliffs. We loved it all!
- Laura (10/5): Mark and Raven were amazing hosts. We really enjoyed our fruit filled breakfasts and all of the advice for local activit - The location! We loved being able to take our coffee to the beach in the morning and enjoy our breakfast with a view.
- Rae-Ellen (10/5): - The hosts were amazing. A true island experience!
- Sunayana (10/5): Unforgettable. Soul-healing. - The hosts were warm and welcoming. The location is spectacular. The breakfast was fresh and delicious.
- Julia (10/5): Pure Big Island feeling - This location is heaven on earth. If you fancy 4-star hotels, this is not the right place for you but for all others, it's just great. The amazing oceanfront! The waves you hear crashing when you are in your room! The sounds at night! The geckos for breakfast! The incredible hospitality of Raven and Mark! We actually got married at this amazing, magic oceanfront and Raven was so helpful in all aspects. She took incredible care of us and our plans even before we arrived. We will never forget that - thank you so much, Raven!!
She is just born to make her guests happy. So if you plan an elopement on Big Island - go for it and to Raven's place! We loved every bit and felt very welcome.
- Austin (9/5): Superb - Having breakfast with geckos, seeing fresh ginger flowers outside every day, feeling like princesses in our mosquito-net beds, hearing the frog symphony at night. Such a cool bathroom too. Leaving. As soon as we left this place my friend and I were going "we miss Raven!"
- Mia (9/5): Outstanding B&B - Excellent breakfast, magnificent location if you want to get away from the daily grind. Raven and Mark are outstanding hosts and will go out of their way to ensure their guests get the perfect holiday. Raven has a million stories to tell, and Mark helped us understand the local customs with great insights in living on the island. Nothing!
- Melanie (10/5): A very special place in real Hawaii - For those who are looking for authentic travel, look no further. Ma’ukele Lodge bed and breakfast in Pāhoa is a special experience in a stunning location. To me, feels like real Hawaii. I feel honored and grateful to have stayed there and met Raven and Mark. We still feel their Aloha spirit. When I return one day, I will take more outdoor showers, heaven!
- Jane (10/5): Exceptional -
- Gergő (9/5): Superb -
- LORIE (10/5): - it was like a little magical land with artsy sweet touches, bohemian style, and hosts were thoughtful and caring and cool folks.Lives it.
- Qiong (10/5): great experience - nice host and the breakfast is amazing, everything is easy and comfortable
- Cassandra (10/5): Exceptional -
- Danamcc (10/5): Wonderful Sojourn in the Puna - What a wonderful spot! This place was beautiful: the garden leads out to the ocean, making for a wonderful morning of sunrise and watching the waves roll in. Breakfast was gorgeous: local fruits, pie and the hosts' own cacao nibs. Our room was lovely and our bed was very comfortable. Raven and Mark and fantastic hosts, we learned a lot from them regarding the local area and enjoyed their recommendations. There is a nearby black sand beach which is swimmable (Kehena) and Isaac Hale Recreational Area is a short drive to enjoy the thermal pools. Our hosts provided beach towels, which was really nice! We were lucky enough to be there on a Wednesday night, so we ventured over to Uncle Roberts for the weekly party: it's a 5 -10 minute walk down the street so you can enjoy a mai tai while listening to local bands and eating local food vendors' fare. We spent two nights in the Pahoa area and enjoyed the space very much.
- Rebecca (10/5): Relaxing, enriching space with Raven and Mark. The beauty of the lodge and the ocean sounds and turquoise color of waves - Beautiful setting, lovely fruit breakfast, friendly!
- Wolfgang (10/5): We‘ll be back for sure, and for longer. Mahalo <3 - Toller, sehr freundlicher Empfang.
- Fraus (10/5): Lovely stay that showcases Hawai'i's true beauty and affordable. - It was a stunning location, you were in the middle of lava fields in an eclectic lovely home. Lovely home, we loved showering outside, all the comforts of home, but really beautiful lush gardens and a lovely photo worthy breakfast! We could have used one more night.
- Ronald (10/5): Real flavor of true Hawaii without the freeways, hotels, and shopping malls. - Breakfast over the top. The location was great….steps from the ocean. Travel advice from hosts was much appreciated. Nothing
- Patricia (10/5): Memorable stay! - Raven and Mark made us feel at home from the moment we arrived. We thoroughly enjoyed talking 'cats' and already miss her beautiful fur babies. Raven accommodated to our vegan needs for breakfast and coffee. Thank you for a memorable stay, loved our chats! Would definitely stay here again.
- Kiran (10/5): Unforgettable, real Hawai'i. We'll be back! - This is one of the most unique and memorable stays I have ever had. Raven and Mark were exceptional hosts who not only made us comfortable in their home, but shared their stories and space with us. Raven created such memorable mornings with beautiful cut fruit in front of a view of swaying trees and the ocean, plus whatever other food we were in the mood for. Mark shared his local knowledge, stories and love of Hawai'i, as well as a few ukulele sessions. The area is a hidden gem and off the beaten path, which made for a restful retreat. Raven has exceptional taste and there is art everywhere - each one with a story. A travel experience that is increasingly hard to find. Go! If you are looking for total privacy, this won't be your spot. But it's the people that make a trip amazing. Must like cats (we do)!
- Tom (10/5): Perfect Hawaiian Getaway - Raven and Mark were amazing hosts. Their place is lovely and a perfect Hawaiian setting just off the coast. We felt at home and loved watching the sunrise and sunset each day. Breakfast was a work of art and delicious. We would go back in a heartbeat.
- Laura (10/5): Exceptional -
- Thaman (10/5): Raven and Mark will see to all of your needs. - Raven prepared a fabulous breakfast with an out-of-this-world fruit arrangement.
- Sam (8/5): The location and scenery was amazing - The location was beautiful. I was under the impression that there was a separate bedroom.
- Tiphaine (9/5): Superb - Raven and Mark are so welcoming! Raven’s breakfast are exceptional and Mark’s advices (visits) and stories are amazing. The location is great your are close to everything. The lodge is very exotic and peaceful. The sunrise on the sea from the balcony was just a blast every morning.
- Muskan (10/5): Amazing stay with extremely hospitable hosts - Raven and Mark are incredible hosts and have created an amazing lodge in Big Island. Off the beaten path but yet close to town, it's the perfect escape. The suite was huge with a beautiful garden and outdoor shower. In the morning, Raven made delicious breakfast with eggs, toast and fruit presented very artistically! Rest of the day we spent in nearby beaches and also watched gorgeous sunsets from their lanai. Can't recommend this place enough!
- Verified traveler (8/5): An escapade, not an establishment - If you want an experience and not a hotel, this is a good place to consider. Don’t complain if you wanted a Marriott; it’s not the Marriott.
The hostess and host are kind and genuine.
The lodging is nestled in a neighborhood, but it feels almost like a jungle. The shower is outside and is reasonably private.
Don’t mind the geckos lingering nearby as you enjoy fresh fruit for breakfast.
- Lawonda (8/5): An Authentic Hawaiian Experience - The owners Raven & Mark were PHENOMENAL!...
The information about the property, accommodations and information about the area - they were very informative and knowledgeable.
The breakfast every morning was healthy and delicious! The short walk on the back of the property to the old lava flow beach was fun & a bit challenging due to the rain. Still, my teens and I enjoyed it. My teenage son enjoyed Mark & Raven so much they had a jam session! The living area is full of classics vinyls and instruments guests can play!!! PHENOMENAL! ⭐⭐⭐⭐ No air conditioning in the Family Suite. I learned on my Hawaiian journey that all Hotels & BBs don't offer a/c. Have to do your research. They had plenty of fans and all windows had screens so you could open them and get a nice nightly breeze in December without insects coming in.
Also, I didn't realize the only shower/bath option for the Family Suite was the outdoor shower. But, because of the nice weather it was more of an "experience" every time we showered.
Nice memories. I've always wanted to shower outdoors, just wish I had an option as it rained on me once or twice.
Still, it was truly an unforgettable experience.
- Christopher (10/5): A magical experience in a very special place - Beautiful lodge, incredible hosts, right on the shore. Showering outdoors under the stars and having Mark help plan our days. Ravens incredible breakfasts. Learning about the Big Island and the culture and people. A truly magical experience.
- Tibor (1/5): Stay away!!! - Nothing to like. This is nothing like the offered accomodation. No bathroom, that can be called one. No air conditioning, no terrace, no seaview, etc. All that I paid for. Here you can not do anything. There is no beach, no road anywhere, since the lava blocked the beach and all roads to the South. If you want to go anywhere, you have to go back to Hilo.
The lady meeting the guests (neighbor or owner, not clear, she gave controversial information), is a weird person, honestly frightening. The common room is not separated from the bedroom of the owner or whoever. What they call a bathroom is a toilet. And they have a tub in the garden, probaly well observed from the house. There is no sign on the house or even the street.
- Sabine (10/5): live like a local - true Hawai’i experience - Raven and Marc are the sweetest hosts ever.
They took so much care of us, and their dedication is incredible.
This is really a true local experience , don’t go if you are afraid of little critters, or expect a Hilton hotel.
We cannot recommend this more for adventurous families, or friends, or couples that want to experience the real Hawaii !
- Minas (10/5): Exceptional -
- Mariko (10/5): Magical paradise - I absolutely LOVED staying here I was greeted by a beautiful couple and they were so nice it felt like I knew them for years they definitely made you feel like you were at home. The location was so magical.. it was so beautiful seeing the Hawaiian geckos enjoying breakfast with us and listening to lovley Koki frogs at night.. walked out to the beach path and looked at the waves.. short drive to the black sands beach. Raven is such a beautiful soul inside and out and she makes a super fabulous healthy breakfast with coffee and mark has the warmest smile and presence. We really enjoyed our stay! Will return forsure thanks so much again!
Love Michael & Maiah
- Ulrike (10/5): Perfect! - Extraordinary location! Raven and Mark were very attentive hosts. Our best stay in Hawaii!
- David (3/5): Not as advertised - Property was not as advertised. There was no balcony overlooking the ocean and no accessible beach front. No air conditioning and no restaurants nearby. Mavern the owner however was pleasant even though the property did not meet our expectation. We left a day early.
- Ann (10/5): Exceptional -
- Merry (10/5): Awesome aloha-ness at this delightful B&B! - Everything! It is a rare jewel tucked away in what feels like a jungle that allows you with just a brief walk to be right there by waves crashing on the lava at the ocean. It was magical! Raven & Mark our hosts are incredible. Raven is so thoughtful in her hospitality (also in serving her yummy breakfasts) & Mark has the BEST stories and touring advice. We used his insight to plan the rest of our stay elsewhere on the Island. He was spot on. We had so much fun! Nothing. But I will say it is a unique property. Do not expect a fancy hotel. It gave us a taste of that authentic Hawaii experience If you come with those expectations, it will definitely not disappoint! Hope we can return some day.
- Sara (10/5): Very special hosts and property with a feel of old Hawai'i. - Raven & Mark were exceptional hosts and the house and property were beautiful. The family suite was spacious and we loved the outdoor shower & tub among the trees & orchids. Raven prepared scrumptious breakfasts that we enjoyed on the ocean-view deck. Mark shared his vast local knowledge about sites, plants, and history. The location was idyllic: off the beaten path and on a quiet dead-end street. There is a private trail down to a smooth lava ledge with gorgeous sunrises over the ocean.
- Laura (9/5): A great taste of the real island life. - The hosts were absolutely great. Half the charm of this place was meeting them. Breakfast was outstanding and definitely a great bonus. The geckos watching and then finishing my breakfast every morning were really something special. I wouldn't say that it was a negative, for us, but for this location, a car is an absolute essential
- Matthew (10/5): Exceptional - The hosts were absolutely wonderful. The room is rustic, but a great way to experience Island life. This was an unexpectedly wonderful jewel. Breakfasts were fabulous.
- Ion (10/5): Exceptional - All was amazing . True hawaiian spirit . Speechlessness Nothing
- Erika (10/5): Welcoming, relaxing, beautiful and laid back - Raven and Mark were very hospitable in their home and made us feel at home. it’s good to make connections while traveling. It is important that one realize this is a home experience and not a hotel.
- David (10/5): Exceptional -
- Paul (10/5): Incredible experience, hope to be back again! - Ma'ukele Lodge is more of a destination than lodging. Raven and Mark are incredible hosts, both for my wife and I and for our 10 and 13 year old children. There is serenity here that finds you, you just need to soak it in.
- Adriene (10/5): Exceptional - Raven and Mark were sincerely welcoming with their home and time. Their knowledge of the local area really enhanced our trip. The breakfasts of fruit and omelettes were fabulous!
- Char (2/5): Inadequate living conditions. - Affordable for near the ocean. The building was not structurally sound. Our room was soiled by a cat.
- Brian (10/5): Ma’ukele Lodge is a great, relaxing place to stay with brilliant hosts! - Ma’ukele Lodge was one of our favourite places to stay during our 3 week tour of Hawaii. Our hosts, Raven and Mark, were so friendly, welcoming and helpful that it felt like staying with old friends rather than at paid accommodation. Our room was charming, quirky and slightly bonkers - we loved it! The Lodge was ideally located for day and night trips to the Hawai’i Volcano National Park and an impromptu walking tour of Fissure 8. The lodge itself was affected by the 2018 Kīlauea volcanic eruption and the short walk down to the black lava beach was quite fascinating. Raven prepared lovely fresh fruit breakfasts which we enjoyed sitting on the balcony in the morning sun and we particularly enjoyed the antics of the numerous green geckos accustomed to feed on the leftover papayas! Brilliant! Nothing.
- Susan (10/5): I would never stay anywhere else on the big island and will recommend to all of our friends! - A great place to stay for a week (or longer). Great for events, parties, kids, reunions! Our hosts, Raven and Mark, are the best. When we arrived our room was immediately upgraded at no additional cost to us. The bed in our room was extremely comfortable. The mattress had a soft top but was firm overall - no back aches. Billowy pillows, soft sheets/bedding. The mosquito netting was pretty and romantic but we saw no signs of mosquitos. The beds had bedside tables, multiple electric outlets and great reading lamps. Our refrigerator had canned sparkling water, juice, fruit and a few other welcome snacks. The room opened onto a private garden with flowers, birds and singing night frogs - it even had an outdoor bathtub and shower, which I loved. The room had everything our hosts could think of for our comfort - snorkeling gear, sun tan lotion, skin soothing lotion in case you didn’t use sun tan lotion, toothpaste, nice soaps, lots of other products a traveler might need/have forgotten. The towels were plentiful, soft and absorbent. I won’t go on and on about breakfast because so many others already have, but just think fresh tropical fruit, guava bread French toast and all the gecko dining companions your heart can desire. The weather wasn’t the best the week we were on the big island but Raven and Mark had ideas of things we could do and gave us great directions to local attractions. My friend and I are anthropologists/archaeologists and Raven - and especially Mark - had great stories about the culture and history of the area. I just wish we had more time to talk with them. There was shared space, including a kitchen, but we were too tired after returning at the end of the day to take advantage. There were also friendly cats on hand to pet! When we left for the airport our rental car wouldn’t start and Raven saved the day by rounding up a helpful neighbor for a quick jumpstart. Raven and Mark have shown such attention to guests’ comfort that I can’t think of a single thing that could have been better. Raven noticed my boyfriend’s attempts to dry out some wet, dirty clothes and even did his laundry!!
- Scott (10/5): Paradise with the greatest hosts - Loved everything. Been traveling for 30 years, and never found a place that checked every box for our awesome stay. If I was going to renew my vows or suggest a wedding venue this would be the place. Our suite was so comfortable and with a outside tub and shower with hot water was like being in the garden of Eden, with all the perks. We will be back!!! Nothing
- Lisa (10/5): Exceptional - Delicious fresh breakfast accompanied by geckos overlooking the ocean. Be sure to put on bug spray if you’re prone to getting mosquito bites and plan on spending time outside.
- Alexa (8/5): Lovely location, wonderful hosts, a little warmer than expected. - The hosts were extremely welcoming and very helpful when we were looking for things to do on the island. Raven's breakfast and coffee each morning was a treat! Location is extremely beautiful, right on the ocean on cooled lava flats. On the website it said air conditioning and this was part of why we booked here, however when we arrived there was only a fan to use instead of an actual air conditioning unit. It was still lovely, but it was different than we expected and made it hard for us some nights since we both sleep hot!
- Kyle (10/5): Exceptional -
- Brendan Behan (10/5): - If you like hotels with all the amenities, this might not be the place for you.
This is an amazing bed-and-breakfast!
The house is surrounded by tropical plants and wildlife.
All night you will be serenaded by frogs and birds.
Our room had an outdoor shower and bath that were private and secluded.
Every morning we had coffee and a wonderful fruit bowl.
We were also offered eggs and toast.
Our hosts, Raven And Mark, were very friendly and knowledgeable about the area.
They had great recommendations on local beaches, local restaurants, and good places to visit all over the big island.
I will definitely be staying here again!
- Isabella (7/5): Good -
- Ronald (10/5): - What isn’t unique about this place? It’s an intimate b&b, we stayed in the larger room which has three full size beds with nets and a kitchenette. The bathtub and shower are outside - fenced from prying eyes but fun. The decor is Bohemian Eclectic and I spent quite a bit of time in the living room of the main house jamming with host Mark - he just got a stand up bass to go with the piano and ukes I remember from last time (did I mention we came back). Excellent breakfast on the deck looking at the ocean, geckos peeping at us. It’s not for people who absolutely need AC or who can’t handle the chorus of frogs doing their frog song at night. It’s way out there, geographically and figuratively. But we love it.
- Jan (10/5): I wish I could live there. A LOT of work to keep up the house. - I liked the night sky and the singing frogs. Hosts were great! A little far from 'all the action' of Pahoa
- Severine (10/5): A true Hawaiian experience - This b&b is a little paradise, with the true essence of Hawaiian generosity and hospitality. Immersed in nature and lava, exotic birds, geckos, trees, and a view on the ocean, everything is there for serenity. Raven is going beyond expectations for her guests, her breakfasts are heavenly, fresh fruits everyday while watching the ocean and the palm trees.
I had my private patio, it’s very pretty and looked like a botanical garden. For this room, the shower and bath are in the garden, I really enjoyed it, it’s a nice experience.
I also would recommend to ask Mark to give you a tour of the area, he is very knowledgeable about Hawaii, from each type of flower and tree to all the history, and facts about lava/volcano and more.
Few things: very clean. Phone reception is ok. Recommend having a car. Uber are not so easy to get in this area and taxis are extremely expensive. Corner shop nearby.
- Addie (8/5): It was a unique Hawaiian experience. - Breakfast was great. The fruit bowls, French toast, and breadfruit were delicious. Eating with the Geckos was a unique experience. Raven and Mark were terrific hosts. Being able to walk to the old lava flows and ocean in just a minute or two and watching the sunset was awesome. The bed we slept in was comfortable. It was clean. The room we stayed in was not air conditioned. So in the afternoon and early evening the room was warm to hot. It cooled off during the night but made it uncomfortable when trying to go to sleep. The overhead and oscillating fans helped. One side of the screen doors did not lock but that goes with the “openness” of the entire place. We used the outside shower which is secluded but still outside so it took a bit to get used to it. On a positive note, if the outside light was not used the stars were magnificent. It did not bother us but there are a “lot” of frogs chirping at night.
- Gijs (10/5): A wonderful stay with wonderful hosts in a little corner of paradise - What a wonderful stay! A cozy room with three double beds in a paradisiacal tropical garden. Raven and Mark are two super hosts full of stories. The breakfast would befit a Michelin star restaurant! None
- Dawn (8/5): Great Peaceful Getaway - Location is amazing if you want a quiet, peaceful setting. Steps from the ocean on a lava beach. Geckos come visit every morning! One morning we had 30+
- Rianna (10/5): - Raven is a sweet and phenomenal host, and the property is beautiful! Gorgeous views, private beach access to watch the sunrise. I loved the outdoor shower, and the beds were really comfy!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The Ma'ukele Lodge is a very unique place. The grounds and beach are gorgeous. The lava flow is right between the house and the ocean, and walking to the beach was an amazing and beautiful experience. The breakfast was great and so was sharing it with the geckos.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - This is a B&B, Raven & Mark’s home (not a hotel). We loved the location in Pahoa which was impacted by the lava flow in May 2018. Raven makes the best breakfast to get your day started. Mark has all these great stories, and tells you where to visit and what trails to do at the Hawaii Volcano State Park. The backyard of their home is just breathtaking, and you’ll never see this anywhere else!! We stayed in the Hawaiian Suite which had 3 big beds, a microwave and a mini-refrigerator stocked with drinks, fruit and chocolates. There was an outdoor shower (wonderful to use) or tub, and a backyard to take in the island feel. We are in Kona now and it’s so touristy, crowded with people and cars. Wish we could be at Raven & Mark’s oasis.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Uniquely quirky lodge with authentic Hawaiian flair. In the Hawaiian suite, you’re showering outdoors under a canopy of tropical plants in a lush garden, enveloped by the chirping of hundreds of coqui frogs and the distant rumbling of waves crashing onto the rugged lava coast. The hosts are incredibly knowledgeable and helpful and prepare an amazing breakfast that you can eat on the terrace with ocean view. Definitely not the typical hotel experience but so much more memorable.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - If you looking for an true Hawaiian experience. This is the place.
- Denis (10/5): Amazing stay, amazing hosts! - We stayed 2 nights there, amazing stay in a peaceful area. Wonderful hosts, great advice from Mark, delicious breakfasts (homemade by Raven, with fresh products from the garden), and direct access to the Ocean. We strongly recommend this place, looking forward to a next visit :)
Denis & Odile.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - This property and it’s caregivers, Ravin and Mark are all a hidden gem in this area. I would take this beautiful, detailed property any day over corporate owned resorts, if you want the true Hawaiian experience I recommend visiting Ma’ukele Lodge in Kalapana. If you are lucky enough to catch Mark on a nom work day ask him for a tour of the area, he is very knowledgeable and will share secrets of this magical place.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - I agree with the previous reviews. This was the first time we’ve ever done a BNB and I was very happy with the balance of privacy and also feeling like I was visiting a relative. Raven and Mark are both super wonderful people full of aloha and care. Location was perfect for us to do all of the things we wanted to do on the eastside of the island and the weather was amazing! Definitely would book again!!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Great location.
Mark and Raven are stellar hosts.
They are caring, affectionate and knowledgeable.
Breakfasts served were delicious and healthy.
Best part is both help you feel comfortable and at home.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Ma'ukele is a wonderfully unique experience! Raven and Mark's home is on beautiful land with
