Guest Reviews
- Renata.96 (9/5): Amazing place! - - staff: kind and helpful, stored our backpacks before check-in and after check-out
- breakfast: delicious and generous meal, you have a choice between japanese or western style - both looked delicious.
- facilities: not the newest but super clean and functional, washing machine and drier worked great
- location: right in the center of nozawa onsen, a couple steps away from a public onsen.
- showers: only onsen shower, but it is great to embrace the local traditions. absolutely nothing :)))

- Andrew (9/5): - Lovely couple who owns Lodge Matsuya. Great location also.
- Yosrak (7/5): Good location - it's just 300m from bus station and 500m from ski resort (but with all equipment, it's quite far to walk). Japanese style breakfast, too less protein in my opinion. You won't need onsen there when free onsen outside is better. Its floor is smelly and not that clean. The door seems to be seen from outside...Bedroom is big enough so, you can stretch after ski/snowboard. Bath room (Onsen) is smelly and not clean. People can see if door open but luckily nobody uses and all guys shall know not to walk to female area.
- CHU FAI (9/5): -
- kayleigh (10/5): - Perfect location, rooms were massive, very clean and the hosts were amazing! So kind and the onsens were beautiful and warm! Would definitely come back

- John (9/5): - The location was great! Very short walk from the main bus terminal in nozawa. You are also right by the Main Street of the village where most of the stores and restaurants are at. Please be aware that there are no private bathrooms connected to the rooms. It is more of an older style building but still has lots of charm!
- Celia (7/5): Convenient location, comfortable stay - Onsen on-site was a nice way to relax after skiing. Great location, 1 minute walk to nearby restaurants and cafes and 5 minutes to the bus terminal. 10 minute walk to YU-ROAD to access the resort, I recommend storing skis up on the mountain so you can walk the steep streets in comfort. The downstairs lounge room was often closed.

- James (10/5): Thoroughly enjoyed and will definitely be back - Me and my girlfriend stayed here for 4 nights over Christmas, and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay, it was above and beyond. The lodge is immaculate and clearly very well looked after. The breakfast is great, you are given a choice of American or Japanese breakfast during your stay, we picked one of each to enjoy, breakfast is already laid out for you on a morning, and they bring hot food out when you get there. It’s an amazing experience and the perfect way to start your day before skiing or snowboarding! There is also a beautiful stream that runs by outside which is nice to look at! There location is very central to the main town, so very easy to get to plenty of restaurants/bars, and only a couple hundred metres away from the bus stop to get the shuttle direct to the gondola, which is very easy and quick (and free). The location is close enough to walk to the gondola if you prefer, but is about 10-15 mins walk uphill. The owners of the lodge are also very helpful, able to provide rental recs and skis passes, and anything else you need help with. We booked a room with a toilet, however showers etc are part of an onsen. This was incredible after a full day on the slopes and something we looked forward to on a night! The onsen is never particularly busy and usually have it to your self. There are communal fridges/microwaves/kettles/water cooler for everyone to use and are kept in immaculate condition by the owners/other guests. You can tell a lot of thought has been put into everything the owners do, and we felt nothing but welcomed and looked after during our stay. Overall, as you can tell from our review, we loved our stay here. Sad to leave, but will definitely be back! None
- Lan (10/5): - In the middle of everything (5min from bus stop, 8min walk to the gondola). Great breakfast and super kind owners. Room equipped with heater & toilet.
- Anne-Marie (10/5): Beautiful experience and lovely stay. - Big room for three adult, super clean, super close to bus stop, super close to ski resort, the family who run this place are really nice and VERY accomodating. The breakfast is wonderful. The only gripe I had was the futon bed. A bit hard for an old person unaccustomed to sleeping on one of these.
- Andrew (9/5): The resort and hotel make it easy to enjoy your skiing or snowboarding - Great location. Friendly helpful staff, they try very hard to help. English is not great, but good enough. Helped book a taxi. Back to the station when we were leaving. Good breakfasts I have lived in Japan for a number of years so it met my expectations. It is an older property, but clean, well run and good hot bath!
- Agnes (8/5): -
- Olivia (10/5): 5 stars 🌟 - The couple who run the property are exceptional hosts. The room is very clean and the beds are comfortable. The onsen and bathroom facilities were all kept spotless. I was even helped carrying my luggage up stairs to my room upon arrival and was able to check in early. The homemade breakfast was delicious and they even made me a vegetarian breakfast each morning! I will definitely stay at Lodge Matsuya again next time I am in Nozawa
- Hanson (10/5): Great value for a last minute booking! - Very cutesy decor, there’s a station with plenty of teas and a vending machine for drinks. Also loved the hotel bath. There isn’t a western style shower- you’ll have to go in the hotel onsen washing area. Although, the bath wasn’t overcrowded, so we never were in the shower area at the same time as someone else.
- Jess (8/5): -
- Muhammad Faris Hilmi bin (8/5): -
- Jonathan (10/5): - The host went out of their way to do everything for you.
- Katerri (10/5): - The owners are sooo helpful and accommodating not to mention the breakfast was delicious

- Henry (10/5): Perfect place to stay - Amazing lodge. Our tatami room was big and comfortable with great views. The shared bathrooms were always very clean. We enjoyed the onsen too. Breakfast was delicious, you can choose western or Japanese style. A good location in the town only a short walk from the bus stop. We loved it here! There is no shower so if you wish to wash you have to use the onsen.
- SATO (6/5): -
- Masa (8/5): -
- Gilbert (9/5): Superb -
- Stewart (9/5): Perfect family-run smaller lodge - Breakfast and dinner available by reservation, good quality and value
- Mary (10/5): Exceptional - I really enjoyed my stay here! It was a very comfy and cute lodge and the staff were so nice and accommodating. The breakfast was also delicious. Overall, I thought the lodge had a great location and really enjoyed my stay here.
- Tim (7/5): Good -
- Marc (10/5): Well located near restaurants, walk up hill to mountain. - Offered full Japanese breakfast & western option in cosy dining area.
- Tri (8/5): Good - Nice staff
- Caitlyn (10/5): Exceptional -
- Tristan (9/5): Superb - It's an older building and showing it's age a bit, but the rooms were spacious and comfortable with ample storage.
The location is fantastic. It lacked morning coffee service, but there were complimentary teas.
A common area shared refrigerator is fine, but it would be nice to have a mini one in the room.
- Laura (10/5): Exceptional - Great location , nice warm rooms, very clean
- Fernando (10/5): Exceptional - The room is clean, the bed is comfy, and the lodge had it's own onsen, which is very convenient. The breakfast is cheap and good.
View from the room is great. Location is very convenient, close to the village center and walking distance from the ski gondolas.
- Dionne (10/5): Exceptional - It's a simple little lodge, but far from the Ski fields and having its own onsen for after a day in the snow was nice. We used that more then the other onsens which were the main reason we came to visit, the snowboarding was an added bonus. You can get a discount for the ski lifts too. We enjoyed the Japanese breakfast also. Great place to stay if you're on a budget too.
- Ian (9/5): Superb - Staff were lovely and room was comfortable. Easy walk from bus. Breakfast was exceptional.
- Yi-sheng (9/5): Superb - Meal was OK, location is great. Can be very noisy at times
- Esther (9/5): Comfortable stay near the slope and Main Street - Location, very clean and comfortable , value for money Nothing
- Jon (10/5): Foreigner friendly place to stay when hitting the slopes. Great central location to town. - The room was much bigger than we expected. Everything was very easy to navigate and the entire property is very clean. The woman running the front desk is incredible. Would stay again!

- Quenie (9/5): Superb -
- Thomas (10/5): Exceptional -
- Aditya (9/5): Superb -
- Saiki (8/5): Unpretentious mountain lodge - Great location, very close to the bus terminal, ski and restaurants. The staff was nice and helpful, advised me on how to get to the ski area. The bed wasn’t the most comfortable.
- Szymon (10/5): Exceptional - The property comes with an onsen you can use even after checking out. It was really convenient! The rooms are also spacious and comfortable
- Stacey (9/5): Superb -
- Dhar (10/5): Exceptional -
- Sue (8/5): Very good - The location is super central and a very short walk into the centre of action.
- Leanne (8/5): Would stay there again. - Spacious rooms. Lovely view. Beautiful onsen shower and bath room. Beds a little uncomfortable
- William (7/5): Good -
- Ulery (9/5): Superb - Breakfast was great! They had both a Western and Japanese option.
- Yuhui (10/5): Exceptional - great place to stay for your ski weekend!it's 5-8mins walking distance from the ski center.and next to few hot spring you can enjoy for free .and quite close to the main street.room are tidy.the breakfast are awesome.
- Yannick (10/5): Exceptional -
- Zachary (9/5): Perfect stay in the centre of town to explore Nozawa Onsen - Right in the centre of town, Onsen at the lodge.
- Amy (10/5): Exceptional -
- Jon (10/5): I loved staying there! - Breakfast was excellent
- Brenda (9/5): Perfect!! - Lodge Matsuya is conveniently located near the main bus stop, tourist information, the Sunday morning market, outdoor morning yoga classes, the village footbath and several bathhouses. The Japan Ski Museum, hiking trailheads and the summer gondola are within walking distance. The clean, simple accommodation was perfect for my needs. Shared refrigerator and tea making facilities available.
- Michael (10/5): Highly recommended lodging in Nozawa Onsen. - The Japanese breakfast was delicious and quite filling. The staff was wonderfully helpful when we arrived drenched from a downpour. The rooms were very spacious and comfortable and the available fans were welcome to help dry our wet gear. The on site bath was thoroughly enjoyed. The parking wasn't immediately obvious, but the owners came out immediately to direct us to the correct location.
- Janine (9/5): A great place to stay! - Location, clean, friendly, fantastic breakfast, Onsen within the lodge. You have to book dinner at booking stage when you don’t know what else is there in town.
- Swantje (8/5): Lovely stay in Nozawa Onsen - perfect for a few nights close to the main street - Small onsen directly at the lodge. Though check-in was at 3 pm, I could enter my room already at noon! :) Lovely view of the mountains from my room on the 3rd floor! Room a bit aged in parts.
- Zye (8/5): We were comfortable and the staff was accommodating. - Spacious Nothing in particular
- Daisuke (10/5): Exceptional -
- Napatsorn (10/5): Exceptional - Near bus station and town
(So a bit walk up to gondola and slope )
Stay in 2 room type Japanese and western both have quiet environments (maybe depending on neighbor ) large room , onsen in the hotel is very convenient. 💖💖 Would stay there again if i’m in Nozawa Everything , bed , onsen , room , atmosphere
- Tom (10/5): Exceptional - We really enjoyed our stay at Lodge Matsuya, the facilities are all very clean and comfortable and it was very reasonably priced.
The Breakfast in particular was delicious and the hosts were so friendly and went out of their way to prepare a vegan Japanese breakfast for me which was amazing.
The Lodge is also ideally located in the centre of town close to local restaurants and the onsen trail (a must try if you're in town). Highly recommend Lodge Matsuya.
A real highlight of our Japan trip.
- David (8/5): Great location, nice view up the mountain and lovely staff. - The host couple were lovely and so friendly. It was nice to have a public Onsen just across the road and a small Onsen bath in the lodge. There was no kettle in the room and hot water only available on the ground floor. With sore legs from snowboarding it was hard to keep going up and down the stairs to make tea or coffee (we were on the 3rd floor)
- Kelsey (9/5): Superb -
- Amy (10/5): Exceptional -
- Oleksii (8/5): Very good -
- Bryce (10/5): Great location! - Central to town and the mountain
- Reynalyn (10/5): Exceptional - Our hosts Mika and Lucy were so sweet and kind. The lodge is perfectly situated near many restaurants, a 10 minute walk to the mountain and near the bus station. They serve a Japanese or Western breakfast for a great price. The lodge is exceptionally clean. The futon style mattresses were very comfy. We will definitely stay here again!
- Maricris (10/5): Exceptional - Huge room. Very convenient location, walking distance to shops, restaurants and ski area. None
- Joshua (9/5): Superb - I went with friends for a ski weekend in Nozawa Onsen and we wanted a decent lodge at an affordable price. Lodge Matsuya exceeded our expectations. It's a simple place, but well maintained and comfortable. The proprietors were very nice and even reimbursed charges through the Booking.com site for one person who had to cancel at the last minute
- Beau (9/5): Second time staying here. Would - Second time staying here. I would absolutely come back for a third. Great location near the centre of town. Walking distance to both Yu road and Nagasaka Gondala. Decent breakfast (recommend the Japanese option). Nothing.
- Richard (8/5): Nice Japanese hotel in good area of the town - Very nice staff, good Onsen, good breakfast, room was comfortable, close to centre of Nozawa. Good drying room for ski gear. There was no cupboard and very little possibility to hang clothes in the room.
- Morgan (9/5): Superb -
- Gabriel (10/5): Exceptional - So clean great breakfast and best duvets in nozawa onsen..thick and warm. Great stay. It was all great. No issues at all 😀
- Mazlan (6/5): Passable, but Nozawa Onsen is really a nice place - Excellent location, but the streets were so narrow. En suite toilet too small. Might as well not have it, use the shared toilet instead.
- Davies (8/5): Very good - Basic accommodations well suited for no frills travel
- Murakami (7/5): Good -
- Wai (9/5): Clean, good location, nice staff. - Clean, good location, nice staff. Nothing
- Dina (10/5): Exceptional -
- Harry (9/5): Superb - An amazing couple runs this quaint lodge. Shared bathrooms were of no issue Location to the slope is a little a challenging in ski boots.
- Julian (8/5): Good location and clean. - The location is unbeatable. Room was clean. The staff were pleasant. The drying room is convenient. I will stay here again. Probably needs a little TLC here and there.
- Krystyna (9/5): Superb - Great location close to the ski resort and restaurants, comfortable room, helpful staff. There's even a small onsen inside the hotel, perfect after a day on the slopes. Will stay again when visiting Nozawa Onsen.
- Amanda (8/5): Simply decent bed and bath - Location was good, pretty central. Simple room clean, and the heater warms up real fast. The lodge felt kinda "cold" in assisting queries.
- Heidi (10/5): Fabulous location. Exceptional hospitality - The gorgeous family that run this lodge could not have been more helpful.
The facilities are excellent. We had a three person traditional room. It was spacious comfortable and warm.
The lodge is in a central location to the slopes and fabulous restaurants and bars.
The breakfast was exceptional.
We will stay again when coming back to Nozawa Onsen. Nothing
