Chris T (10/5): Would stay again in a heartbeat. - This is a beautiful hotel in a very quaint and delightful village. We stayed two nights and found the staff very attentive and hospitable with an innate courtesy towards their guests. The ryokan experience is amazing and the kitchen staff produce a top class dinner menu. Dressing in Yukata and wandering the village (even with umbrellas up) was a highlight. Our in-room onsen was perfect for relaxing after a 90-minute dinner experience. The lobby lounge was nice to relax in, but please consider upgrading that coffee machine and widening the range of snacks? Don't be afraid to put some English-language magazines in the shelves.

Kai Ping (9/5): A great and relaxing stay. - Our dinner was in our room. That was a great experience, however the smell after the dinner was terrible. I felt I sleep with seafood whole night. That’s the only downside about this hotel. Other than that, everything is perfect!

Lieke (8/5): Happy with having stayed at the prettiest room ever. Would never do it again as a solo traveller. - This was by far the very most beautiful room that I ever stayed in. It really took my breath away how wonderfully calming it was to sip a tea on the veranda next to the beautiful garden with koi fish in the pond. The personel is incredibly nice and all of the spaces are lovely. The breakfast was very nice. In retrospect I really wouldn't reccomend this as a solo traveller at all. This was by far the fanciest stay of my trip and I chose it specifically because I wanted to experience such a place once. The in-room dining as a solo traveller was just an incredibly claustrophobic feeling to me as it takes most of the evening and there's constantly someone coming into the room, giving the situation a very strange atmosphere as you are inside waiting for the next dish. It just really wasn't for me somehow and though I love this type of food I thought the theatre around the presentation took away something from it's quality.

Sara (10/5): Take a special onsen cure in this historic ryokan - Superb in every way. Stunning hotel in gorgeous location which is popular with Japanese people for taking an onsen cure. We had a Japanese style room, so gorgeous, wonderful wet room bathroom, sitting area overlooking the verdant garden, complete with auspicious (and greedy) carp! A place to reconnect with self at every point of the experience, incense to create the mood, astonishing breakfasts - both western and Japanese style - a Michelin level kaseki meal of 9 courses over 2 hours, a variety of onsen available in the hotel (fantastic), free access to all the onsen in town (lovely too), yukata, take, geta to wear all the time if you wish (plus a special one for the meal), gorgeous artefacts and a good shop. No large size geta sandals! All one size. And would have liked somewhere to store suitcases as they got in the way of our delightfully zen space.

Le (10/5): First time experience- Nishimuraya Honkan will spoil you for all other ryokans and onsen! - Amazing first time experience at traditional ryokan as well as first time onsen. I think we have been spoiled for life by our stay. Nishimuraya Honkan definitely set the bar high. From the in-room dining service with our lovely and joyful Yu-san who was very attentiveto our needs, to the delicious menu prepared by chef who catered to our raw vs cooked requests, and to to tranquil and healing environment of the grounds and onsen. Well kept and maintained. We loved having a drink or tea by the window overlooking the koi pond. I enjoyed the lounge after a bath. And cannot forget the amazing, relaxing and healing experience of the onsen on site. It was so clean and beautiful we did use any of the other onsen in town even though we had the pass! Like I said, Nishimuraya Honkan set the bar high. No notes!

Nami (10/5): Incredible. - Meals: Incredible dining with fresh, local, seasonal ingredients. Meals of the highest caliber. Service: Friendly, prompt, courteous service at every single step and every single inquiry. Everyone I met was kind and helpful. In addition, they offer extra services, such as a free shuttle to and from the station, and an affordable in-room massage to elevate your experience further. For women, female staff will also help you dress in your yukata with obi. Everyone is very professional. Room: Comfortable, clean, and beautiful. Modern toilet, with great heat and water pressure from the shower. The futons were very soft and easy to sleep on. The hotel itself is full of beauty, from the garden to the museum. The onsen was nice and hot. The hotel is like being in another world. Location: Very proximal to many points of cultural interest. Most of the cultural aspects (Onsenji, sacred onsens, river stroll), are accessible all day. There are unlimited dining and shopping options nearby. The locals are also very kind. Amenities: Everything you could ever need was provided. Yukata, geta, sandals, onsen pass, face care, hair care, toiletries. Bike and helmet rental was easy and free, but do plan to reserve ahead as they only have so many bicycles.

Ivy A W (10/5): Deserving of its Stellar Reputation - Wonderful stay. Friendly, professional and accommodating staff from the moment we drove up to the property to when we depart. The staff even helped to sort out our luggage delivery to the next accommodation in another city. Our hostess Matsuri was sweet, polite and gracious. The property itself is beautiful and exudes an old-world charm, and our room with in-room onsen is such a treat. The meals we had were also delicious and thoughtfully prepared and presented. We had a lovely time at Nishimuraya Honkan and hope to return again.

Having been living away from Japan, for too long, I cannot judge the Kaiseki cuisine… it did look very beautiful… I was hoping a little more of the crab in season. I wished I could have stayed an extra day or two. Thank you!

Matthew (10/5): - Nishimuraya Honkan was one of the most incredible hotels I've stayed at, a real highlight in our trip to Japan. The room was fantastic as were the hotel facilities (which include a great onsen) and the team too. The kaiseki dinners in the room were utterly incredible and the Japanese breakfast each day was a delight. We loved it.

Balázs (10/5): Luxury ryokan with awesome food and a great location - The food was excellent: fine dining for both breakfast and dinner, with a couple of options. The staff provided us with everything we needed, so we almost didn't need to open our suitcases. The public baths within the ryokan were awesome. It was in a great location, close to the public onsens. Getting to and from the station was a breeze. The staff was sometimes a little bit overwhelming.

Gleason (10/5): Exceptional - This place was incredible. They make you feel very special here, with multiple people always welcoming you back, welcoming you to breakfast, greeting you as you walk by. The in room meal was amazing, every meal we had here was beautifully crafted and presented and the taste matched the presentation. Beds were the most comfortable out of any Ryokan we stayed in, the gardens were beautiful, and the complimentary drinks in the main room were so delicious! The location is perfect as you are minutes away by walking to multiple onsens, as well as Onsenji, where we were able to hike up to, and were blessed with an incredible view of the Sea of Japan and permission to soak in the waters of kinosaki onsen. This was our favorite experience of our whole 23 day stay in Japan!

Anna (10/5): A truly wonderful experience. - Staying at Nishimuraya Honkan was an incredible experience from start to finish. The staff could not have been more helpful; from assisting with transport to providing a vegetarian kaiseki meal for me, they really went out of their way to make the stay really special. The property is beautiful - we loved the onsen, and making use of the lounge in the evenings.

Jane (10/5): If you can afford it, do it. You won’t be disappointed. - This is a very special hotel. It comes at a high price but personally I have never stayed anywhere as lovely. Our garden room was incredible and the evening meal was utterly delicious. The price. It is very expensive.

The onsen at the hotel was a great experience as well. We loved how Kaori hosted us for the Kaiseki dinner at our room. It was very interesting to try all the traditional dishes from Japan.

Nathan (9/5): Absolutely loved it, would definitely look to come back again! - Loved everything about this ryokan, from the room to the food to the services provided. We had a Japanese suite room which was at the top of the ryokan and had a lovely view overlooking the ropeway and the garden. The room and ryokan were both clean, offered Yukata and geta to use for the duration of your stay, and comes with access to the many onsens in the town. There are two onsens within the ryokan, too, which are worth checking out that switch genders each night, so it's worth going at night and in the morning to experience both (one is Japanese-themed, the other is Greco-Roman). The food is lovely, both dinner and breakfast are plentiful with a wide selection of seafood, noodles, and other ingredients. The crab is exquisite. Service from all hotel staff, from the receptionists to the servers to even the maintenance staff were all so polite and helpful. Loved every thing about our stay. Not a single thing. Perhaps the only small inconvenience (and it really is small), is the distance from the centre. The ryokan is located close to the ropeway at the western side of the town, up a gentle hill. If wearing getas, it can be a bit of a slog walking up the hill back to the ryokan...but, that's all part of the experience and means your legs feel they need the onsen!

Lior (8/5): Lovely hotel but don’t go for the food. - It was really traditional and beautiful they let guests were traditional clothing which was lovely to take pictures in and the location is perfect. The food was really not worth the price I was seriously underwhelmed.
Yas (10/5): Exceptional - I loved the beautiful room and garden was so beautiful. Staff was very polite too exceptes à girl with blond hair who checked out me. I dont know if she was stressed as maybe new? Or if she was just not friendly.. Also the city was beautiful with blossom flower day and night and tourist shop and coffee. I used the 1h30 private bath in their sister hotel which was incredible with a beautiful view of the nature! I am sorry but i was so disappointed with the food. I didn't expected the food to be not salted, no tasty, too much fishy flavour. I do love fish, sushi, saumon. But they were à lot of fish that we probably dont know as european tourist. I guess european we are used to salt, sauce, spicy sauce as well. In my opinion, the food was not tasty. It was just like raw fish staight away coming from the river and put in a plate with no flavour at all . I was really surprise. If i can make a suggestion. You should put inthe menu mire sushi with avocado for example, more meat like kobe meat. Even my husband who eats everything comoare to me and used to go in very very good restaurant was disappointed too. No offence to the chef, the food was good quality but not used to raw food and fished. Service of the waiter was great too!

Geoffrey (8/5): Post-Sakura Kinosaki - I was with my siblings, 7 of us in 4 rooms. All the rooms were different but all were very comfortable. Location was great and accessible by foot to all parts of the town. For my next visit of 2 nights I would like to have one dinner outside of Nishimuraya. I have been to Kinosaki twice and I will continue to come back. It's certainly one of the best onsen towns in Japan, and surely worth visiting at any time of the year.
