Guest Reviews
- Danchise (10/5): A very well kept motel that brings back the motor lodges of the 50s and 60s. It is simple, but very cozy. Loved it. - Ely is a small, beautiful town in far northern Minnesota. Every year they have an Ice Festival where you can view fantastic statues made entirely out of snow/ice. I went up to see the sculptures and stayed at the Motel Ely, It reminded me of motels when my family took road trips. This motel is so quaint, yet every room has a fridge, microwave and coffee maker. The beautiful wood paneling made me think I was in a cabin in the woods. I want to emphasize that the simplicity of this place makes it very comfortable. The rooms were extremely well taken care of. The best thing is that there are no phones! I loved the whole experience.
- N8596AIbarbarak (10/5): Big Thumbs Up! - Loved Motel Ely! Not your typical modern soulless motel/hotel. While the furnishings are mismatched and rooms are small, everything was spotless and charming. Very cozy. Mid-century-style mini fridge was a nice amenity, and there was a small coffee pot in the room. Proprietor was super friendly and offered info about Ely as well as recommendations for restaurants that were spot on; she clearly values community and supports local businesses. Highly recommend this affordable spot.
- Brianna (8/5): - Yo
- Melanie F (8/5): - We only stayed for the night. It met our needs.
- Patti (10/5): - Ac was adequate, the unit was a little loud, but it did its job. Clean room.
- Henry (10/5): - Very clean room with everything we needed for our stay (ie: microwave, fridge, soap/shampoo/lotion, coffee, etc.). Convennient parking with easy access to downtown areas & local actvities. Quiet evening with outdoor seating and near full moon. Friendly, kind, knowledgeable owners.
- Jerome (8/5): - It was all fine and a fair price.
- Andrew (10/5): - Clean, spacious rooms. Easy parking. Friendly staff.
- Donna (10/5): - Very clean and comfortable.
- Sylvia (8/5): Basically, a good stay. - The only real concerns were the hot water taking a long time to heat up and the noise level was occasionally loud with a couple of our meighbors.
- Michael (10/5): - Nice people
- Ron (10/5): - This is an older motel right on the main road in Ely. Check in was easy and the owner was welcoming and recommended a couple of nearby restaurants. Room was clean and the bed was comfortable. It was a nice, quiet place to spend the night.
- Ruth (10/5): - Cool, 60s motel vibe. Very clean & comfortable, owner was super friendly & helpful with our questions about the Mesabi Trail & local dining options. Would definitely stay here again!
- Russ (10/5): - We had an excellent stay.
- Mohamed (10/5): - Great customer service
- Stephen (10/5): - Clean room nice beds
- Karola (10/5): - The rooms are dated but very clean and beds comfortable.
- Jon (10/5): - Clean
- Sally (6/5): - We appreciated the convenient location of this motel, right on a main road in town. Several restaurants and shops are in walking distance. We parked on the street as the motel's parking area is tight, and our full size pickup didn't have enough room to maneuver. Our room was small but very clean and efficiently organized. The internet and TV service worked well. The office is not staffed later in the evening, but communication was good. The motel does not have a restaurant or breakfast service, but the room has a refrigerator and microwave. No ice machine on site, but the gas station across the road likely sells ice. The property does not have any common areas -- no lounge or seating area in the lobby. We were not planning to spend a lot of time here, so this worked for us. Staff was friendly and helpful at checkout.
- Ellen (10/5): - Owner/operator very nice. Room was spacious & nice.
- Stephanie (10/5): - Super nette Motelbesitzerin mit wertvollen Tipps für Gastro und Kanutrip! Motel schon etwas in die Tage gekommen aber sauber und funktional. Wir hatten einen tollen Aufenthalt.
- Rebecca (10/5): - Was clean, bed was comfortable. Looks old from the outside but room was very nice.
- Dennis (10/5): - Clean room Easy parking
- Michael (8/5): - The room was clean, it had a fridge & coffee maker, and the bathroom was spacious. I was there for one night and Motel Ely was perfect for.a one night stopover.
- gregory (10/5): nice time - handsome older motel,very good shape,staff helpful,clean,quiet,has personality
- Joan (10/5): - Had a wonderful stay here. Very friendly. Comfortable bed. All was fantastic.
- Linda (10/5): - They were really friendly and informative
- Manuel (10/5): - Super friendly staff, clean accommodations, quiet.
- Stephen (10/5): - The only downfall was the lack of parking, especially for those pulling a boat. We understand, though, that is not something they could control.
- Terry (10/5): Nice - Very clean! Comfortable!
- Samantha (10/5): - Loved the aesthetic of the hotel. Was very clean. I arrived after 10pm for check-in, I called ahead to let them know and they had my key waiting for me and a sweet note welcoming me. After driving four and a half hours to come to a ready room late and that was so clean was a delight. It was a quiet area and across the street was a gas station, so it was nice to grab a few things so close to our stay. Will be back.
- Doug (10/5): - It was great for the money !
- Katherine (10/5): - Very spacious and clean room. Beds were comfortable.
- Julia (10/5): - Very cute property. The bed was very comfortable, one of the best motel beds I’ve been in! Front desk was super kind and welcoming. My only ‘issue’ was the shower… it would go from an ideal temperature to scalding hot, back to normal, and then to freezing cold and back to normal repeatedly. Other than that it was a great stay and I would definitely go back.
- Gregory (10/5): - What a great stay. Solid food options within walking distance and we were able to ride to the start of the Mesabi Trail.
- Randall (8/5): - Convenient place to crash before / after time in the BWCA. Design of building limits air circulation in rooms, and arrangement of rooms around parking lot ensures everyone hears everything.
- Beverly (4/5): - This little motel is a dump. Peeling paint, window stuck and air-conditioner didn't work. Only redeeming quality was the courteous employee, but there was only so much she could do.
- James (10/5): cute little locally owned motel - We stayed at Motel Ely for a couple of nights while on a quick sightseeing trip to Ely. Even though the motel is right on the Main thoroughfare through town, it is quiet. Ownership is friendly and always helpful.
I always prefer the Mom and Pop motels and this one gets 5 stars.
- Patrick (10/5): - Great location happen to be there in the night at the local farmers market in craft fair was going on walkable to all where all the bars.
- Robin (8/5): Great location - Check-in was flawless. Bed was comfortable. Room was dated but comfortable and clean. Parking was a little scary because space is confining.
- WILLIAM (8/5): Good Location to Enjoy Ely - Motel Ely has had nice updates to he bathroom and other areas. The ownership is very present, pleasant and extremely helpful. There are beautiful flower planters around the property. We would stay there again.
- Gregory (8/5): - Was OK
- Mary (8/5): - Very quaint and quiet. Owner was very helpful and sweet! Would stay there again, lived the location!
- Cameron (10/5): - For a small motel it is quiet, clean and easy access. Staff was very nice.
- 39islayh (10/5): Don’t tamper with this place its fabulous as it is. - Loved this traditional motel. Owner is super helpful, directing us to things on in town snd suggesting places to eat. Our room was spotlessly clean, some are quirky with beautiful original features.
- Paula (8/5): Comfortable room - We never saw anyone from the office. Check in was done by leaving instructions with a key. This was not a problem for us Would have preferred a later check out than 10:00.
Room was clean and comfortable.
- Sarah (8/5): - Loved this place and would definitely stay again! Owner was very friendly and helpful. Only complaint was the strong smell of fragrance which we guessed was maybe carpet powder because it didn’t really dissipate despite us trying to air it out.
- Glen (2/5): Terrible Experience - Your website gave this hotel a very favorable rating. My wife and I felt it was the worst hotel that we have ever used. The room smelled musty/smoky/dirty/undesirable! It was 11:00 PM when we arrived. Fortunately, the front desk person left the room key in a mailbox by the front door to the office. We would have left immediately, but there are few options in Ely, MN, and the nearest reasonably sized town is 50+ miles away. We booked 2 nights, but told the front desk person that we were not coming back for night 2. On a 1-10 scale, we would give it a 1, at best.
- skip (10/5): - Always friendly, always clean!
- elizabeth534 (10/5): Perfect for scout troops going to Northern Tier - The Motel Ely owners were super friendly and gave us great tips on where to eat breakfast. There are two 3-queen rooms together in a slightly separate part of the motel which was perfect for our scout troop. Great price, everything was clean, and the location was perfect. We had time to explore Ely the next morning before heading to the Boundary Waters for our canoe trek.
- Kurt (10/5): - Very nice owners!!
- John (10/5): - Very unique fixtures. Always a pleasure.
- Rebecca (10/5): - Special touch was the coffee pot was ready to go in the morning!!
Super clean
Other than the guests that sat at the patio table giving the rest of us the stink eye, perfect!!! Their problem, not mine!!
- Benjamin (10/5): Good - Really helpful and kind staff.
- Luke (10/5): - Very good, will return. Within walking distance of the downtown and shopping. Helpful staff.
- Islay (10/5): - We received a warm welcome from the owner who chatted away about what was going on in town, places to eat & things to do. Our room was spotless & bed comfy. We loved Ely, the Wolf & Bear Centers & perusing the shops of Sheridan Street. I even had a dip at Semer’s Beach on recommendation.
- Alexander (10/5): - Clean comfortable and super friendly staff. It was walkable to all of downtown Ely. Would definitely stay there again.
- Chad (8/5): - I feel it was pretty expensive for a small room and being a motel.
- Alexander (10/5): - The woman at the front desk was so friendly! Made us feel like family and the room was comfortable and clean.
- Erin (6/5): - Everyone was very nice and it was clean. It just hadn’t been updated in a long time. The bathroom layout is awkward.
- Michele (10/5): - Very clean & nice.!
- douglas (6/5): - Dark and claustrophobic. No breakfast.
Overpriced
Nice to have refrigerator and microwave.
- Kristen (10/5): - Check in was great! Staff were very nice and had great advice! Thank you!
- mike (10/5): - Nice, simple, friendly place.
- Janet (10/5): - So clean nice customer service loved it
- Timothy (8/5): - The property was in close proximity to everything I wanted to see. It was clean. The staff was amazing and very helpful. My only complaint is that the mattress wasn't very good.
- Nick (10/5): - Limited parking for larger vehicles, otherwise great place!
- Micca (10/5): - The owners are the best!
- Haley (10/5): - Great stay in Ely - clean, quiet, comfortable, and good price! Convenient location and helpful owner.
- Eric (10/5): - Motel was clean and very well maintained. Owner was nice and friendly. Will stay again next time im in ely!
- Laura (10/5): - Stayed here during the Ely Film Festival. The staff is friendly and helpful.
- Terry (8/5): - Quite comfortable and no complaints. The fact that there are no phones is no big deal. For the bargain price, this is an excellent choice.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Great place to stay. Had multiple rooms rented for a week +. Owner was great with any questions I had and very accommodating. Highly recommend
- Antoinette (10/5): - So clean beds are really comfy! Walls are a little thin but quieted down when we told them about it. Staff was amazing!
- Wayne (10/5): - The parking was a little problem. We have a pickup truck and fitting that into unit number 5 was a problem. After unloading we just parked in the street, No problem, the motel is on a corner so there are two streets to park on and because it was winter the motel owner made sure we parked on the correct side of the street .thank you.
- Jacob (8/5): - Overall a good place to stay clean and comfortable
- Scott (8/5): - Not a new place, but we've stayed here numerous times over the years. It's a tad dated but clean and convenient to Ely explorations. The parking lot is a bit cramped though, especially when people park pickups in it. Comfortable beds and small town homey character.
- Kathleen (8/5): Ely is cool! - We've stayed many times. The beds aren't as comfy as home, but we're not getting any younger, so kind of to be expected...
All in all a good stay.
- Linzee (10/5): - The owners were very nice and gave us great recommendations on things to do in the area etc
- Rebecca (10/5): - Contactless check in - Very nice property
- robert (8/5): - Small, modest rooms but surprisingly clean and well-kept. I slept well and bathroom was very clean. Owners have done a nice job updating this older property. Good value. Several good food options just 5 min away.
- Carelie (10/5): Repeat customer - Always a pleasure to stay here
- Scott (10/5): - Nice and quiet
- Jayne (10/5): - It was wonderful
- Julie (10/5): - I am originally from Ely. I have stayed at many places there…. But this was my first time there. I was pleasantly surprised at the room. First of all… it was clean ! The bed was comfortable…. The water pressure was awesome and there was plenty of hot water ! Also had a microwave and a refrigerator…. Plus a coffee maker.
I would stay here again…..
- Tom (6/5): - It is clean, small, somewhat dated, and toilet is extremely low. Suitable for short stays.
- Lynn (10/5): - Second stay there, very clean, reasonable rates
- jeff (8/5): - Very clean and spacious room. Good location.
- Steve (8/5): - It was a nice little motel from the 40s in good condition
- MISSY (10/5): - Great place to stay!
- Michelle (8/5): - Didnt have hair dryer in the room or a heater that i could find. But it was clean and cozy.
- Robert (10/5): - The owners were very friendly and helpful.
- Julie (8/5): - Pretty clean and big rooms.
- David (10/5): - Pleasant staff, clean, friendly atmosphere, walking distance for meals.

- Lisa (10/5): - Reasonable price. Basic motel room. Clean.
- Larry (10/5): - Very nice. A little dated, but clean and comfortable with all the amenities. We would definitely stay here again.
- eurotrippe (10/5): Great Spot in Delightful Town - My cousin and I recently stayed a couple nights on front and back ends of a canoe trip. Classic little motel at east end of Sheridan St. Owners Edie and Mike have preserved the character of this time capsule updated with all the modern conveniences. Spotlessly clean, everything in good working condition, lots of hot water and a good Wifi signal. Edie and Mike are also delightful to chat with and are so helpful. Ely itself is such a nice little town to wander around. Highly recommend.
- madeline (10/5): - Friendly and helpful management and staff.
- Nancy (10/5): - The owner was awesome!
