Guest Reviews
- Maksym (10/5): - Hide, the owner, was very helpful. He provided useful info and overall had great hospitality.
- Pablo (10/5): - the owner is so kind, he gives you advice and he helps you in any way he can
- luca (10/5): Highly recommended for a relaxed getaway! - Cozy accomodation in a relaxed are outside the main town.
Great value for money and a very kind host!
- JM (10/5): Most excellent -
- chinatsu (7/5): -
- ONG (6/5): cheap - Free upgrade towel, building a bit old
Vielen Dank :)
- Andre (9/5): Highly recommended for the value and presence of Hide-san - Hide-san went above and beyond to pick me up and drop me off within the area as the hotel is a bit far from the JR station and the lakeside. The room is also neat and comfortable. Location is a bit far, but it’s mostly due to lack of bus in the evening.
- Ondrej (9/5): -
- Taylor (10/5): - Big Loft Styled room. Apartment is tucked away in the mountains so it is really quite. Nothing
- PeiHsuan (8/5): -
- Ying Wai Bryan (7/5): - This is a comfortable room
- Elizabeth (9/5): Really lovely - would love to return one day! - The host was very kind and helpful - regularly offered to give lifts to town or the train station to compensate for the remote location. Not a complaint but just be aware that this hotel is up in the mountain so a little difficult to reach so make sure to familiarise yourself with the bus schedule.

- Yiyi Huang (10/5): -

- Vered (8/5): Very good - The owner was very nice and helpful. He gave us two rooms for 3 people even though we paid for one. The room is simple but clean and ok size. We got from the owner discount tickets for en excellent onsen The bathroom is very small and there was not too much hot wate.r
- Yong (10/5): Couldn’t be more thankful to the host, nice stay - The location is a bit far from the city area but can be arrived by bus. Would be perfect for car drivers but the host Hide san was incredibly helpful. He offered the onsen ticket, fetched me back after the firework show. He even gave me a ride to Sobetsu park (which had the most stunning view in my Toya Lake trip) and Uzusan Ropeway. The room was cozy and clean, typical Japanese apartment. The surrounding was quiet and tranquil. Nope.
- Sean (9/5): Fantastic host - I can't thank the owner enough. I had a lot of questions in advance, and he answered all of them promptly and in considerable depth. He also gave us a great recommendation on where to eat in the evening. The food and ambiance at Matsumaeya were both a real treat. Nothing. Everything was fine.
- Chenyan (1/5): Bad -
- Dianne (8/5): Very good -
- Emma (9/5): Superb - We had the most wonderful time. 5 very comfortable nights, beaut location, drive/walk to the lake, nice drive to Rusutsu. The beds were very comfortable and the host was amazing. The accomodation was very cleaned and serviced daily. Cannot wait to visit again soon!
- Vincent (10/5): Exceptional - Extremely friendly owner, he even left all of us some food for a night!
Room service was great, gave us new towels, etc. and cleaner the room.
- Sirieak (10/5): Exceptional -
- Ding (8/5): Very good -
- Laurence (10/5): - Hide (owner) is such a kind and compassionate person. On arrival he gave us fruit and there were many snacks provided in the rooms. Many of the other days he would give us more fruit and then a lovely gift when we left. Every day he was so helpful in removing all the snow from our vehicle before we left for the ski fields. Hide is what makes this hotel such a pleasant place to stay. Thanks Hide, we loved staying with you!
- Dean (10/5): Great place - Cute little place with Japanese style rooms. The male owner was so friendly! We will definitely be back the next time we come for boarding in Rusutsu The neighbors up stairs.
- Tom (10/5): Exceptional -
- Wendy (8/5): Great owner - 2 futons were on the ground floor while 1 futon was on the mezanine floor, which can only be accessed by a ladder. Not recommended for elderly people to climb up but for our group it was okay.
Owner was very nice and helpful, giving recommendations of food and answers any questions that we ask about the place. he also gave discounted Onsen tickets, free drinks and even took a polaroid photo for us when we were leaving! The area the house is located in is a bit far from the city center and is very dark at night, but the building had a bit of some lights itself. In my opinion this place is only accessible by car.
- Adrian (10/5): Exceptional - The facilities in the stay were very convenient.
The host is very friendly and offered to pick us up from Toya Lake after the fireworks show even though we have 10 people in the group. The host also offered recommendations for local restaurants. Nothing
- Jo-Anne (6/5): - As nice as the owner and family are, I can't really recommend this place. Location is 2km out of town so you must have a car. Location is very quiet at night but in the hotel room you can hear water running from toilets etc in other rooms and people walking on the floor above. And I had some sort of tapping sound in my room early in the morning on the second night which made it hard to sleep.
There is a fridge and hot water urn in the room, but no tea or coffee (lucky I had my own)and only paper cups to drink out of.
I had the Japanese room and the futon was very comfortable. Air con was good as warm on day 1 and cool day 2 but I did have to ask for English instructions.
Even though it's fairly cheap I wouldn't stay again.
- Gan (7/5): Good - spartan but spacious Had a kind of smell in the room.
- Tulip (10/5): Exceptional - Hide (the owner) is the most gracious, thoughtful and kindest host I've ever come across - from offering a detailed introduction to Lake Toya (things to do and places to eat) to picking me up after fireworks at night and dropping me off at the train station in the morning because it was raining! It's heartwarming to meet such considerate and genuinely wonderful human beings. The room was a very comfortable Japanese style apartment room. Very clean and spacious. Hide also offers a 500 yen coupon for a lakeside onsen bath at a four star hotel in Toya onsen! Overall, this was my best stay in Hokkaido. Next time, I'm coming back for 5 nights because 2 was too few!
- Riccardo (10/5): Exceptional -
- Chelsea (8/5): Very good -
- Hany (7/5): Decent budget option in a pricier area - Owner was very friendly and helpful. Room was clean. A bit far from the main drag, shower is makeshift and small.
- Frank (8/5): Very good -
- Alexander (9/5): Superb -
- Alexander (9/5): Superb -
- Natasja (8/5): Very good - Big room, simple, clean, nice to have separate toilet from bathroom. Host gave us information about nearby restaurants and told us about the fireworks show at night.
- Matthew (10/5): Exceptional - Really liked the owner, who was genuinely friendly and helpful throughout. Room was really quiet and it's easy to get to town and back.
- Ossio (5/5): Not good not convenient not recommended - Location is far, not suitable for traveller without car, also not suitable for senior who can’t climb. Flexible cancellation policy, the owner didn’t honor my cancellation request even though I raised it well in advance…
- Szilvianagy (10/5): Great value and kind owner in a silent neighborhood - The owner was waiting for us at the exact time we told him we'll arrive. We got sweets and discount tickets to onsen. I was amazed by that onsen hotel, Infinity rooftop pool, it was fantastic. We had a car, the lake and shops are in a 3 min drive. The hotel is quite old, but everything was good. Clean bed sheets, warm, bright, no smoke smell in the room, silent at night. We were travelling with a 1 year-old toddler, it was safe for her too. There is a loft in the room, we did not use it. It would be great to put a curtain to the small window at the loft, because at night the light comes in from the corridor.
- Israel (10/5): Exceptional - Cozy little hotel, nothing fancy but we had everything we needed.
A great place for a budget ski trip to hokkaido compered to the crazy prices in the resort towns.
Toya lake is a sweet location if you are willing to drive a bit to get to the ski hills.
The host is an absolute legend and thats what makes the real experience in my opinion.
They even took care of one of our mates when he got a bit sick and skipped a ski day with the rest of us.
The onsen they provided us with discount cards was also really good and we liked it the most of all the other onsens we visited
- Alexander (7/5): Good -
- Terrance (7/5): Good basic lodgings in an interesting area. - Koizumi's owner was cheerful and helpful, and his Engilsh was quite good. The location is distant from town, ideal if you have a car (which we did). It's at the edge of the 'ruined town' area, now a park, that commemorates a small town destroyed by volcanic action and now has a viewing boardwalk and posted information. It's not a fancy or a traditional place, but it's well-kept and convenient for car travellers. Our futon beds were in a loft, another plus. Basic kitchen was provided. No real complaints. It would be inconvenient if you didn't have a car.
- Martim (10/5): Best receptiveness in a Japanese hotel so far - I had a very nice reception by the owner. When I arrived, I was given a full package of Japanese snacks. He then offered to give me a lift to the lake, to eat in a restaurant (as there are none close to the hotel) and to watch the daily fireworks. After the fireworks, he gave me a lift back to the hotel.
Because I am travelling by bicycle, on the following day he gave me an isotonic for my bike trip around the lake. And on the day I left, he gave me some sushi and an energetic for the trip. So these small demonstrations of receptiveness really captivated me and to me they are more important than the utmost comfort of a 4 or 5 star hotel. Location is a bit far from both Lake Toya and the Toyako town. But as I mentioned, when I needed a lift, he gave it to me.
- Luke (10/5): Exceptional - The owner and his family are so friendly and helpful! They even picked me up after watching the fireworks on my first night.
If you like the countryside and are looking for a nice mountain area near the lake, this place is ideal. Definitely wanna come back, thanks so much!!!
- Alexander (8/5): Very good -
- Gabriele (9/5): Ideal for visiting Toyako with a short walk - Extremely quiet location, conveniently located one minute walk from the bus stop; the owner was extremely kind and friendly: he offered us to pick us up in the evening after watching the fireworks.
- Meng (8/5): Very good -
- Anonymous (10/5): Exceptional - The owner was very nice and the loft concept was cute There were no utencils to cook and the location is a bit off-route unless you have a car. You have to get the public transportation - which may not be that often from time to time.
- Matteo (10/5): Welcoming! - The hotel and the rooms are spacious and very cute/homey. It is a comfy cozy stay and the owner is so incredibly kind and helpful. It was not an issue for us, but its a little bit outside of the main area, very close by car and they have free parking. I would recommend getting a car if you go.
- Florence (4/5): Disappointing - Not much!
The bus from onsen centre stops near by the hotel. The hotel's name did not match what's online.
The bus driver confirmed the hotel.
We went in, no one there to greet us, we called out and knocked on doors to no avail.
We came out to wait for the bus when an elderly lady called out to us and took us in.
Showed us the room and how it worked and wanted the money asap. No receipt was given to us.
She did offer to drive us to the centre free of charge if we wanted to.
The room has a loft with very narrow stairs, where the futon beddings were kept.
There were toothbrushes in a basket if we wanted to buy.
There were 2 paper cups for hot or cold drinks! We had our own supplies.
Towels were available if we wanted to shower in the very narrow bathroom.
- Michael (1/5): Worst place I ever stayed. - Nothing There were roaches in my bed. The owner in the hotel over charged me by double. Said I order for two people.
I chose one person. Your computer (bookings computer) may have changed it. I am very unhappy with this.
- Ee Peng (4/5): Bed bugs! - We slept on the loft as we did not want to move the heavy futon down and I got bitten by bed bugs!
Not worth the price and it's a 2km walk up and down slope to the lake area.
