Guest Reviews
- Barbara (8/5): - A very old pub close to Goring and in the middle of the Ridgeway. It's in a very cool atmosphere. The rooms are outside the pub in the garden. The bed is not so big but the price is very good. No breakfast but close you find a bar where have it. They serve food but not every day, we hope that it can be change in future.
- Teresa (5/5): Basic accommodation but clean. Convenient location for walking the Ridgeway. - Good location right off the Ridgeway path. The room was clean and the staff were friendly and helpful. There was plenty of hot water and the shower worked well. The pub website said that breakfast was available to book however on arrival we were told that they no longer offered breakfast.
The bathroom was in need of a complete overhaul and the shower gel dispenser was empty. There was also no bin anywhere!
- Mike (4/5): Sadly disappointed 😞 - Breakfast was offered on website but as a double room option was two breakfasts and no option to select one! luckily I didn't select it as when I arrived at the bull they didn't do breakfasts anyway! Sadly the heating wasn't working, and all night the water pipes were making a terrible bubbling noise which kept me awake most of the night. Also the escape sign above the door has a green light which also affects sleep. I was hoping for a meal but they didn't offer evening meals Monday or Tuesday night. It's under new management and I did meet the Owner and I hope they can sort out the issues as its a lovely old style pub.
- Oliver (8/5): Great value for money in the area - Great location for Ridgeway walk and close to river No breakfast
- Jeni (10/5): - Lovely hosts and good location for walking into Streatley.. fab outside space and very quiet over night with no road noise.
- Andrew (10/5): -
- Jonathan (8/5): Clean, comfortable, friendly and excellent value for money - The room was quiet, clean and very comfortable. The bathroom was clean and functional but obviously very old and looking a bit tired. This didn't bother me at all. Given the location and the price, the cleanliness and comfort and the very friendly new owners it was excellent value for money. Exactly what I needed for my Ridgeway walking trip on a budget! The option of breakfast would be good once the new owners have fully settled in
- Abelljms (7/5): all great - nice bar, looooow ceilings! will be great once breakfast is available. In the meantime they should do a deal with the Pierrepoint cafe across the river for a discount for Bull customers, etc.
- Lisa (6/5): Very friendly staff but the place needs a lot of work - The location was lovely and the staff were really friendly We had dinner as we arrived just before the kitchen closed at 19:30 and the food which came out was overcooked and clearly not cared about. The rooms were not that clean, we were not given any instructions for check out. When trying to check out at 10am we discovered the pub was closed, there was no key drop box and no one was answering the phone. As we were travelling on to a wedding this made the morning highly stressful.
- Elizabeth (10/5): - Great over night stay
- Peter (6/5): A mixed bag - The welcome and reception on our arrival was very friendly. All paperwork was dealt with very efficiently.
We were shown to our rooms in the grounds of the pub.We all found our double bed each very comfotable. The first evening's drinks and food were fine. Please bear in mind that I need to point out that the new managers had only been in place for 2 weeks. Therefore, responsibility for some negatives should likely fall on the owners-in this case,Marstons.
Whilst the sleeping area was fine, the condition of the bathroom required a lot of attention;not only to the rotting wood but also decoratively.
Apparently, sickness amongst the staff prevented any provision of any evening meal on the final night of our stay. This information was stuck to an outer entrance door. We,obviously, had to hastily make other arrangements.
- matthew (7/5): - good location price was right paid for breakfast through booking .com only to find out they don't do breakfast and still waiting for a refund
- Roger (3/5): - Good location, decent room Check in losses at 2pm, pub listed as opening at 12, no one on site until nearly 4:30. Likewise on check out which was listed as 11am. No one there until after midday.
- Emma (3/5): Full redecoratition, referbishment and deep clean required - When we complained that the room had clearly not been cleaned the staff member was appropriately apologetic and the room was cleaned while we went out for a walk. The village setting and river was beautiful. Despite the very poor quality of the room and decor the beds were pretty comfortable. The room needed a deep clean, repairs were needed, broken blinds, curtains falling off rails and mould in various places. It all needed redecorating as well. Very poor and not representative of the photos on their website
- Gillian (4/5): Disappointing - an empty pub with no real ales and poorly maintained rooms - Good situation with a large car park (my freinds came by car). Temporary staff did their best and the evening meal was good. There was no real ale - a selling point for us.
The room was not clean. The bathroom was dirty and wooden panelling round the bath was rotting and falling apart.
- Sharron (6/5): -
- Richard (9/5): Excellent value for money - The location was ideal as went to the festival didn’t have breakfast but had a nice meal on day of arrival staff were friendly and service was good
- Max (10/5): -
- GARY (3/5): Disappointing - No food available and bar shut by 7pm
- Gordon (4/5): Not very satisfactory, will NOT return. - The bed was comfortable, There was constant hot water. The room was warm. The dressing table was similar to a work bench, no drawers, no wardrobe, hangers on a rail. No hairdryer. Bathroom - in need of decoration, brown stains round taps and plug hole, sink cracked, base of bath/shower worn, paint flaked on bath. No handles in shower or assistance rails. windows old and needed replacing. Room was outside pub. therefore had to walk through “gardens “ No lights around garden when we returned at approx. 10pm.
- Paul (8/5): - Good location for a short stay or as a stop over if walking the Thames path.
Friendly host and staff.
- Giacomo (9/5): -
- Rob (8/5): - Host was very friendly and accommodating.
- Philip (7/5): -
- Paula (9/5): I would stay here again - No frills, clean and comfortable, friendly staff, great pub grub ( good value deals) 20 minute walk from Goring station which was handy. I enjoyed my stay. Leaky shower and no breakfast option. But there are other options in the village. Other than these 2 things, it’s a great place.
- Richard (10/5): - Paul did some laundry for us, which was marvellous as we were walking the Ridgeway.
- David (9/5): Comfortable and affordable overnight stay - Great location, good value dining
- ANGUS (7/5): -
- Nicola (6/5): Lovely location with friendly welcome and lots of potential. - Comfortable bed and clean linen. Lovely and very helpful staff. Some instructions for the shower and the TV would have been helpful. A hairdryer would be welcomed and whilst an iron was not expected, or provided, we did have a small ironing board! There was no pull string on the shaving light so a little unsafe. The exit light was very intrusive. An outside light to help find the path, steps and lock at night would also be welcomed. This is a newly acquired business and I am sure there are lots of plans being made. It’s a fabulous location with welcoming staff.
- Kathryn (3/5): -
- Mason (10/5): -
- Ian (3/5): - Location Bath had hairs in it, so we moved rooms.
The rooms are badly in need of refurbishment.
New owners are trying hard and I hope they get there....
- Annie (5/5): Perfectly adequate and clean and OK for the price - Location is everything with this one. Big car park, lovely big garden to sit out and have a drink Was out all day and both evenings so was only sleeping there really. Paul, the manager/owner? was very helpful.
2 enormous beds so could have slept 4! No hassle about time checking out which was a change! Rooms and bathroom nice and clean My bedroom sided on to the large kitchen vent so I didn't want to open the window because of the cooking smells but I could see the other rooms wouldn't have that problem. Tea, coffee (decaff too), sugar, sweetener provided but no milk! Therefore, couldn't have a coffee in the morning nor tea on arrival. Just couldn't work out why they didn't supply UHT milk sachets as they do everywhere else. They had no breakfast chef so breakfast wasn't available BUT, there are amazing places in Goring and Streatley so that wasn't a problem for me. UHT milk would have improved everything!
- Ernesto (7/5): Good - Location A few small maintenance issues, specifically in the bathroom.
The room wasn’t serviced at all during my stay
- Helen (8/5): Very good - The room was basic but ok for what we needed. Clean , warm. Tea/coffee facilities.
Right next to the pub for evening meal. Good location.
Beautiful villages.
Would stay again.
- Roland (5/5): Basic pub accomodation, reasonably well priced for what it offered, food inthe pub was basic but Ok - Location was OK for what I wanted, a one night stay to let me access the Bell at Aldworth, which was the principal reason for my trip. The room was large, reasonably comfortable with a decent bed. Bathroom was also large and the showere was dcent. It was a very hot day, and the room was pretty stuffy. Not possible to open the windows as the room opened directly onto the busy adjacent 4 way, traffic light controlled road junction. It would have helped if the heated towel rail in the bathroom could have been turned off, and perhaps a fan provided. The small bottle fridge in the room was worse than useless as it cooled the two ciders I put into it by precisely no degrees, whilst concurrently chucking out a fair bit of heat itself.
- Katie (9/5): Great Value for money, good clean accommodation with parking and lovely food. - Second time staying in the last few weeks, ideal location for our needs, the staff were friendly helpful. The room was although basic and could do with a little updating, it was clean with wonderful comfortable beds, towels and plenty of hot water. There was also good parking available.
For the price paid we were very happy, it meet our needs and we have booked again for next year when we are due to visit the area again.
We also ate in the pub the food and service was excellent, would recommend. Slightly dated room and in need of some TLC
- Chris (10/5): Attractive, comfortable and quiet accommodation, with lots of room and good facilities - Spacious and comfortable room - Well equipped and nice and quiet. I think the accommodation is much better than the website suggests. Staff very friendly. Couldn't have suited us more!
- Bee (9/5): Superb -
- Michelle (9/5): Superb -
- Michelle (9/5): Superb -
- Harry (9/5): Superb -
- Mark (7/5): Good for a stopover in Goring. Could be cheaper for what you get. - Clean, well-presented room in a nice garden setting. Convenient for an overnight stop in Goring. The facility to leave the bicycles safely locked in a back area of the pub. The manager and the landlord who sorted a problem for us. There wasn't a kettle in the room. We had just cycled a tough section of the Ridgeway so were exhausted and needing a drink. It took over an hour to sort. Eventually the landlord lent us his kettle.
- Andy (8/5): A nice pub to have a meal and stay at. - No breakfast served there Nothing really
- Jane (8/5): We had a comfortable night with a good meal at the Bull and the staff were very friendly and helpful. - Quiet room with comfortable beds to the side of the main pub, well located close to the Ridgeway path, which we were walking. Bath/shower water could have been hotter.
- Neil (8/5): Comfortable, quiet and good value - Convenient for walking the Ridgeway
Beds were very comfortable and room was quiet.
Food was good and very good value Hot water was limited
The chef was not available for breakfast, but there was a lovely cafe across the bridge which opened at 08.30 (Pierreponts)
- Matthew (5/5): Great location, comfortable room - Great location, easy to find, friendly staff, lovely countryside around Unfortunalty there was no chef when I was staying there, so had to walk into Goring for food, this isn't far and only a short term issue, would have been nice to know before arrival
- Steve (8/5): reasonable place to stay - room , parking, pub all was ok
- Charles (8/5): Very good - Two big beds and very good value
- Brian (3/5): Disappointing - There was a bed Shower didn’t work. No soap in the bathrooms. Tried to contact - no answer. Tried to check out, no one was there and wouldn’t answer phone. Have emailed and contacted since and completely ignored via booking.com, phone and email.
- Debra (8/5): Great - Loved the staff No hair dryer
- James (6/5): Pleasant -
- Ashley (6/5): Pleasant - Staff were brilliant in the bar next door, really helpful and happy. Night was really noisy, there was a group of people who knocked on my door at 1:00 am waking me up and then proceeded to talk for ages outside the room.
- Ash (10/5): Exceptional -
- Angus (6/5): Pleasant -
- Tom (2/5): Stay somewhere else! - The young woman who welcomed us was friendly. That was the only good thing. I had a booking for one night in August. We paid £80. But the room was completely unsatisfactory for the price. It hadn't been cleaned properly - the windows were dirty, there was hair and grime in the bathroom, and old coffee stains on the bathroom wall and door. The furniture in the room was awful - no wardrobe or drawers, just a rail. Crates for tables. The linen was nice but the bed was cheap and lumpy, with no support on the sides of the mattress at all so you just rolled off. There was no soap by the sink, the bathroom shelf was at such an angle you couldn't put anything on it, the TV was covered in stains, and the whole room hadn't been properly decorated - holes in the walls, holes around the sockets, empty picture hooks, stained walls. We didn't even stay that night in the end.
This is not an £80 hotel room. It's a £30 motel room. The whole thing was shabby and squalid, and smacked of cheapness - the feeling we got was 'we'll take your money but we can't be bothered to give you a nice room'.
When I complained, I was offered £20 back, fair enough as we'd changed and used the shower by then. But after multiple emails to follow up I've still never received that money.
- Carol (5/5): Passable -
- Sally (1/5): Defrauding customers - Nothing! Property had no record of our booking even though they have taken my money. As for more cash to stay Had to find & pay for alternative accommodation Property looks run down and tired. Everything Unable to stay as landlord has run off. Have taken my money but now ignoring my requests for a refund
- Swiftcoon (7/5): Good - Perfect for being close to coppa club and the Thames Decent power shower missing
- Rory (3/5): Disappointing. - Location was good , friendly staff. Poor fitting blind which let a porch light shine in all night . Broken lamp with exposed wire , kettle and a tea bag but no cup or spoon or milk or coffee . Leaking tap, dirt in the bath . I wasn’t expecting the ritz for £80 but it was below standard in my opinion .
- Lesley (5/5): Passable - Location. Location was perfect. Room was in need of upgrading, eg decor. No cups or kettle, no seating.
- Sharon (6/5): Pleasant - Location POD machine in both rooms, but no pods. One room without a kettle. Not the cleanest .
- Knapp (9/5): Superb - Great location
- Beverley (1/5): Just horrible. We travel a lot for work on a budget so we're actually not fussy. This is the worst. - Kitchen was closed throughout due to gas flow valve fault. Didn't like anything except the young man who tried to address my complaint but it seems he was out-ranked with his attempts to refund us. Privacy was poor as room went straight to a footpath outdoors and some locks were broken on window. Security is very poor. Cleanliness was very poor and whole place deserted in morning so couldn't get help, place was cluttered and grubby outside and my laptop indicated their Wifi was off until late morning, so unable to work as needed. Room was very dirty. Bathroom was very grimy, toilet stained, toilet brush and holder soiled, taps, plug, handldes filthy. Floors dirty, thick dust everywhere, caked on in places and poor storage for clothes. Alternatives for food very expensive in area or out of Tesco Express. Not good when we travelled from Peak district, worked all day and retired to cold food during extremely poor weather. No response to complaint at all even though we gave them several days to reply. Asked for refund, not received.
Have so many photos of room, too many to choose to add to this post.
- Keith (1/5): Never again - Parking was terrible at front or back.room was not good got a bit on my leg swollen, dirt marks on the bedding.no hand soap .no one to wish you safe travels or talk to in the morning. Nothing
- Susan (10/5): Exceptional -
- Annabel (6/5): Pleasant -
- Tony (3/5): Luckily short. - Cross between a meth den and a care home.
Glad we were only staying one night. Cleanliness, decor, functional bathroom, lack of druggies, food, a selection of beers.
- Louise (7/5): Good -
- Andy (6/5): Pleasant -
- Marie (10/5): Great spot - The room size was amazing! No breakfast served (despite it being on the booked order) and got a speedy refund for the breakfast I had pre ordered
- Nefeli (9/5): Superb - It was comfortable and clean, perfectly next to the pub, super close to the train station (15min walk) so it was easy to get to reading festival. No complaints
- Jessica (9/5): Superb -
- Mark (5/5): Passable -
- Mary (7/5): Good - Very friendly staff. Dog friendly.
Good walks in the surroundings area.
- Glenn (4/5): Needs upgrading - Location Very tired facilities
- Georgina (8/5): Very good -
- Angel (10/5): Exceptional - Great customer service and comfortable room.
- Elizabeth (5/5): Passable -
- Anne-marie (8/5): Lovely stay - Lovely room basic but clean and comfortable which is all we needed.
Great location, lovely friendly staff and perfect bar.
We will most definitely stay here again! The kettle could do with being replaced/or descaled inside.
- Colin (8/5): Very good - The friendliness of the staff. The situation - it's not far from the river Thames and the Thames Path. Being in the Goring Gap the views from the hill behind the hotel are stupendous!
- Justin (4/5): You could do so much better with almost no effort - Lovely quaint English traditional inn, convenient location, atmospheric place. The little details let it down: no toilet paper, only one coffee pod and no kettle, no soap by the sink. Noisy refrigerator trailer outside all night.
- Elspeth (4/5): Overnight stay - Good location for our National Trust visit. Advertised as £80 for the night but charged £93.50. E mailed The Bull but no response. Booking.com has not resolved this issue, so far, either.
No hair dryer in the room, asked for one and told a hair dryer would be found. It never arrived.
Only a capsule type coffee machine was provided in the room (with no capsules) for boiling water. The water kept missing the container and had to be cleaned up.
- Sanda (7/5): Good value for money, very friendly staff - Quiet and homely A little bit more update, especially bathroom
- Jonathan (9/5): Lovely room, staff very friendly and good. Would definitely be first option if back in the area - Room was basic but large, clean and comfortable. Bathroom was large and very functional. Great shower, comfy bed, lovely room. A switch to turn off the towel rail would be useful (bathroom was a bit warm)
Also, door curtain didn’t quite cover the window - managed to trap the curtain to get full coverage.
- Daniel (4/5): Disappointing -
- Nicola (7/5): Very Basic but good value for money. - We had a very warm welcoming from the owners .
The location is beautiful and it has a very big beer garden. It needs a little updating but I guess it’s part of the pubs character . Also a bit disappointed there was no breakfast on offer. However we were told where to get one in the village.
- èˆŸè¯ (10/5): Exceptional -
- Stephen (8/5): Great for a stopover when walking the Thames Path - A very friendly and helpful welcome. Good pub food and drink. Great location for walking the Thames Path. Accommodation in separate building was good, comfortable bed, bath, TV. All basic but everything that was needed. Good value. Nothing given the price and type of accommodation.
- Andrey (9/5): Superb -
- Carl (7/5): Good - The bed was quite comfortable and everything was provided as advertised at a good price for the area. The pub had run out of hand pumped beer and the accommodation, though perfectly adequate felt a little tired. An option for breakfast would have been nice but the pub was still locked up when we left just before 11am.
- Trevor (5/5): Average - Good location for what we wanted. The room needed a total make over. The bedside light fittings were very loose & wobbly, they weren't done up properly, the window security stay was broken, the shower was loose & missing a control knob. Just a bit dated.
- Trevor (10/5): What the pub lacks in interior quality it makes up for in going the extra mile for its customers! - Although there was a problem with our booking when we first arrived, the land lord and bar staff were excellent in solving the situation and we had a great evening there. The room was particularly comfortable. The rooms are near a busy road.
- Roger (4/5): Lacking in several areas. Needs urgent refurbishment. - Its only redeeming feature was the location. I was unaware at the time of booking that breakfast is not available. The whole place including the accommodation needed an overhaul in terms of decoration and a bloody good clean. If my wife had been with me we’d not have stayed!
- Selina (8/5): Very good - Comfortable, spacious room. Staff were very friendly. Nothing
- Chris (10/5): Exceptional -
- David (9/5): Great setting by the river, friendly staff - Friendly Staff, good service at the bar. Easy checkout Nothing (Maybe aircon) as it was the hottest day of the year. Thought had been put into how to manage the challenging temperatures
- Fiona (7/5): Good -
- James (5/5): Passable -
- Caroline (1/5): Cheap but not cheerful. - Car park. Location. Not clean, damp, tired, noisy, lack of facilities, not comfortable.
