Guest Reviews
- Peter (10/5): - What a great time we had at Kanazawa Chaya. My family of 5 stayed here for three nights half-board following our stay in Tokyo. This place is out of the world. I cannot describe how attentive the staff are at this Ryokan hotel. My mother is approaching her 80s and I mentioned to them in email ahead of time that my mother prefers softer food and they delivered. I was worried that the three breakfast and three dinner would be repetitive, but much to my surprise, the Kaiseki meals were so meticulously planned and with fresh ingredients. We cannot have a better time in Kanazawa. It's also so close to the train station, making visiting the rest of the city a breeze. The most important thing of all is that the staff were so friendly and welcoming, we were completely spoiled during our stay.
- pennywiser (6/5): Clean but basic - Very nice staff but definitely not a four star experience. It’s a bit of a strange hybrid between a chain hotel and a ryokan missing both the efficiencies of the former and the charm of the latter. The restaurant is quite good and tries hard to be accommodating but struggles to deal with more Western appetites. The rooms are incredibly clean and well serviced but quite lacking in updated amenities. Location is decent near the train station but a little removed from tourist attractions.
- ryoichi (10/5): - 夕食、朝食ともに最高に美味しかったです。
- Gillian (10/5): - We had an amazing stay. Staff, food and bedroom were all fantastic. The location is also very convenient to the station.
Highly recommend. Wonderful experience!
- Kimberly (10/5): - Wonder
- Robert (10/5): - This was a unique and authentic traditional Japanese experience. We had the traditional Japanese dinner as well as breakfast.
- キミヤス (10/5): - とっても美味しかったです。
- ??? (4/5): - 駅から近くて良かったです。
- Luis (10/5): - It’s a different experience than staying in a western type hotel. The hotel provides superb attention to detail and customer service. Will be staying again in this hotel if coming back to Kanazawa.
- Jiayi (10/5): - Excellent stay!
- Tamara (10/5): - Very traditional Japanese inn with outstanding service and Japanese food
- Jeff (10/5): Kanazawa Experience - What a great experience. I only wish we could stay longer. A real Japanese experience. The staff is amazingly helpful. And it’s close to the train station.
- kathm798 (10/5): Perfect stay in Kanazawa - A superb stay in a modern ryokan. All the traditional service and dining you would hope for, a stone’s throw from the station. The staff were superb - they even clocked our sizes on check-in so my husband’s yukata in the room was 3XL!! Fabulous kaiseki meal and large breakfast. Fresh white bedding. Loved it all!!!
- Dingo_dude (10/5): A truly unique experience - Having never stayed at a ryokan, a traditional Japanese inn, this was an experience that we both thoroughly enjoyed. The Kanazawa Chaya is located a very short 3 min walk from the JR Kanazawa railway station and is easy to find. The Higashichaya Old Town, Kenrokuen Garden, and Omicho Market are also within easy walking distance.
The entrance is through a small, landscaped portico area, which makes a perfect visual and mental separation from the streets outside. The lobby is spacious and equally tranquil. The staff were very helpful in explaining (in basic English) the various amenities of the hotel and assisting us through the check-in process.
Our room was very spacious, with tatami flooring, sliding shoji paper doors, a delightful tokonoma, and a reasonable western-style bathroom. The low table at the centre of the room, replaced with a futon every night.
We were provided a yukata set, comprising a yukata, yukata jacket, obi (belt), and socks. For the uninitiated these traditional garments function as a bathrobe, and loungewear – they can be worn to the onsen, dinner and breakfast, and even to bed as sleepwear.
Our stay usually included an elaborate multi-course dinner, kaiseki ryori (Japanese haute cuisine), featuring local and seasonal specialities, and a traditional breakfast in the morning. Alcohol is not included but added to your bill. You will need to confirm the time for dinner and breakfast the day before your meal.
We both enjoyed the use of the hotel’s onsen, another first for my wife, it was so refreshing after each day of sightseeing in the area.
I would wholeheartedly recommend this ryokan experience to anyone travelling through Japan – we both felt lie treasured guests.
- Kelly (10/5): - The room came with dinner and breakfast- both were delicious feasts with a variety of dishes. They did forget one of my preferences for foods, though. The baths are well maintained, but the building is an older style. The staff were all so helpful. A great introduction to the ryokan!
- Katherine (10/5): - Wonderful service. Great meals.
- Sakujiro (8/5): - Well organized. I enjoyed dinner and breakfast very well.
- SARIO (10/5): - The hotel is very close to Kanazawa Station and has a good location to reach tourist attractions quickly.
One of our family members arrived late due to a flight cancellation, but Mr. Ueno made a very nice suggestion and the whole family was able to have dinner together.
The entire hotel staff was very hospitable.
I would like to thank Mr. Ueno and stay there again!
- laureno650 (10/5): Comfy base to explore Kanazawa - Perfect location by bus/train stations for easy arrival and departure, and it was easy to walk to the main sights around town. The rooms are spacious and comfortable, and the on-site bath lovely. We enjoyed breakfast so much and were able to walk to many dinner restaurants nearby! Would stay here again!
- G5316HLalbertos (10/5): A true Japanese experience - The Kanazawa Chaya ryokan exceeded all my expectations!
I got an issue for my reservation, I talked with the super friendly and nice staff and after some checks they confirmed to me that I could stay for the booked night.
The room it is really big, with Japanese tatami and beatiful interior design such as paper lamp and Japanese paintings on the wall.
The arrival was really nice and pleasant, with explanation (in basic English) of every amenity of the hotel and room as well, and I got green tea and traditional Japanese sweets.
I enjoyed the private onsen that is available for guests for a long time (5 am to midnight), and you can reserve massages as well.
The traditional Japanese breakfast dressed with Yukata inside the wonderful restaurant with Japanese paintings is just a great experience with the staff dressed like Geisha style and always smiling at you.
I also appreciated the traditional Japanese music during breakfast and the futon was super comfortable!
I was seriously impressed by the staff: they are super polite and helpful and allowed me to leave my luggage before checking in as well as after checking out so that I can enjoy visiting Kanazawa.
Highly recommended!
ありがとうございます!
- Yichun (10/5): - Excellent meals
- Verified traveler (10/5): - 料理が美味しかった。
- Hir0miC (10/5): Excellent foods and location - We took a train with a large luggage to Kanazawa. Ryokan was located in very short convenient location. Even hot summer, we were able to drag or luggage to Ryokan.
Train, local bus, tour bus are located in walking distances which made us easy to sight seeing. Foods they serve were excellent. Recommend to choose breakfast and dinner plan to enjoy local seasonal foods. Old traditional Ryokan with modern western conveniences that we were able to enjoy eating and relaxing. Nice to have coffee available for foreign travelers at traditional Japanese breakfast time. Great place to stay at Kanazawa.
- lifesafeast (10/5): Traditional Japanese Guest House conveniently located - This traditional Ryokan was conveniently located 5 minutes walk from Kanazawa Station. Our Japanese-style room was spacious and the futons were surprisingly comfortable. The staff were extremely kind and helpful and were always friendly and welcoming. The Japanese breakfasts were delicious, plentiful and lots of variety. We enjoyed a kaiseki (multi-course) dinner one evening in a private room and it was a wonderful experience. Highly recommended.
- AnthonyG669 (10/5): Very enjoyable. - Arrived here from Osaka on the Thunderbird express. The hotel is behind the Garden Hotel and a short walk from Kanazawa railway station. We had a well appointed room and made use of the onsen which was very welcoming after walking around. We had pre-booked dinner at the hotel which is taken in the restaurant and is kaseki style. Very enjoyable. Breakfast is taken on the second floor and on both occasions were were offered western or Japanese seating.
- GMTravelJapan (10/5): Great value for the location and service. - I travel around the world and Japan has so far one of the very best service to offer. For Japan service here is just good, but for world standard it is very good. Very Japanese looking and set hotel (ryokan) so if you are in Kanazawa it is a great choice I would repeat again. Rooms are Japanese as well, sleeping on Tatami actually futon is an experience as well. Whole place is very clean and food is fantastic, of course only if you like Japanese food.
- bochi168 (8/5): Nice place. Small servings but nice - I believe this place is pricey. And the servings are small. However... the service is great and very fast... the ambiance is also very nice... and the food... perfectly traditional. I would recommend this to those who wish to get a traditional feel of japan
- DeniseLoseo (10/5): One of the best hotel experience! - I'd probably place this hotel in the same category as my experience with Ritz Carlton and Shangri-la, just this time, its a traditional ryokan.
Everything really was exceptional. The room was spacious, staff was great and know basic english, our butler was awesome too. The onsen was clean and really relaxing, it has everything you need - it even has a dyson hairdryer! The en-suite restroom was also spacious. The dinner was WONDERFUL! Even the breakfast was great! It's very near the Kanazawa station and its also easy to find. I cannot say anything negative about this hotel. Will definitely stay in this hotel again when we visit.
- SME82101 (10/5): lovely hotel - excellent service - this is a beautiful Japanese style hotel with excellent staff, quality rooms and fabulous food.
The professionalism shown by the staff here was outstanding
The tatami room was spacious, and the bathroom and amenities were of a good standard
- 882RobertK882 (10/5): Breakfast was great and dinner even better - The ryokan style room was neat and tidy and the mattress comfortable but what really set this hotel apart was the excellent food. Executive Chef Noriyuki Genda takes great care in both presentation and flavour. The kaiseki-ryori meal is standard for all hotel guests but resembles a western degustation menu. The hotel location near the railway station is convenient.
- andrefal (8/5): Typical Japanese Ryokan - Good position, near the station, very cleaned and with a warm atmosphere. The personnel is very kind.
Amazing restaurant, the most important value of this location, if you go I suggest to take the dinner in its restaurant.
- BruceH678 (10/5): Comfort and serenity in the heart of town - My wife and I recently spent a night at Chaya Ryokan, and wished we had spent more time there. While practically across the street from bustling Kanazawa Station, the hotel is quiet and peaceful. Rooms are decorated with elegant simplicity, the staff was unfailingly helpful and polite, and the kaiseki meals are to die for! Although it's a bit expensive, it's a perfect place to treat yourself to old-style Japanese elegance.
- Q55VXpaulw (10/5): Degustation delight - Tucked away close to the Central Railway Station, this traditional ryokan hotel and restaurant is superb. The food is wonderfully presented - every dish had us out with our cameras! And the flavours were delicious. And they were very accommodating to gluten-free options that were sometimes even better presented than the main dish. Service is traditional, respectful and caring. Private rooms mean you can enjoy company and food without distraction.
- NattMc (10/5): Everyone traveling to Japan should stay in a Ryokan -
This was our Ryokan experience, extremely happy we included it in our itinerary and we picked a lovely establishment, would recommend this ryokan. The staff were very polite, helpful and friendly, our stay included a half board, which meant dinner and breakfast were included. On check in we were taken to our room and served a traditional dessert and tea. Dinner is served in the restaurant, everyone had individual rooms, we dressed in our room garments for dinner, this is not essential, but was fun to experience, most other people were dressed up also. The eight course dinner was just beautiful and very tasty, my daughter does not eat meat only fish, they were very accommodating. I wish I had chosen the western breakfast, which was an option, but we did all opt for the Japanese experience. The room was very clean, and well equipped, futons were firm, doonas fluffy and warm, pillows too firm for me, face products and toiletries supplied. Glad I had this experience at Kanazawa Chaya, I have experienced it now and do not feel I need to do again.
