- Caroline (8/5): Excellently located very comfortable hotel - My room (203) was exceptional
All the staff were really friendly and super helpful
Fabulous Davines toiletries No breakfasts
- pamc48 (4/5): Spartan feeling, do not recommend - Would not recommend for a business trip. The checkin with key code is fine, but the hotel is super basic almost like a hostel. Tiny bedside tables that barely hold an iPad, no shelf in the bathroom or hook to hang toiletries, so had to balance on back of toilet. They provide one paper cup, so choose whether you want coffee or water because you cannot have both. Next day they didn’t provide a second paper cup so rinsed out the one from the day before. Location is great, right near Grand Central & easy to get cabs or walk anywhere. One tiny slow elevator for the hotel- ended up taking the stairs most of the time.
- Titta (8/5): Great stay, great location for a family of four visiting NYC for a few days. Excellent staff and easy checking and entry - Great location, comfortable beds, quiet room, Kitchenette and supplies were great! The bathroom needs ventilation, there was a bad odor, and units were broken. Use is visible in most places in the room, so a fresh pain would help.
- Alastair (10/5): This was the perfect location at a great price. 5 mins from grand central station and walking distance from empire state - Amazing location, the perfect space for our stay! N/A

- Anonymous (10/5): Exceptional -
- mh999 (10/5): The Bard Himself Would Love This Hotel! - Best location in Manhattan for walking to Broadway, libraries, shopping. Even better: a wonderful staff, comfortable bed, paramount cleanliness, and a delightful bar on the lower level where Guinness on tap and a "British Grilled Cheese" sandwich became a delicious welcome back to lovely NYC. The staff people, especially King, and the two guys in bar (Shakespeare's), and a woman at the front desk (whose name I didn't get) whose smile was as brilliant as her advice to this weary traveler. Will book again on the next trip. Thank you!
- Marlon (10/5): - I loved my stay
- CHARLIE (2/5): - I just had surgery, arrived and checked in to my room, the room was freezing, when adjusting the thermostat it did not work properly
I took a bath and the water was only tepid warm, the bathtub leaked so water was all over the floor
Alerted staff at front desk, personal came up and wiped the floor down, they could not give me another room as hotel was booked
Next day maintenance came to fix the bathroom but nothing was done about the thermostat
I was in room 407, terrible room that needs to be repaired for all its faults
I was stressed and very uncomfortable and had a horrible stay
Also there is no manager available, only by email
It’s ridiculous to rate this as a 4 star hotel or give it any rating at all
This is by far one of the worst hotels in the Marriott chain
- Anonymous (1/5): Would not rebook - Location Rooms were not clean. The bathroom did not have good ventilation and it smelled like mold or mildew. Health hazard potentially
- Seaside01271113126 (2/5): Caution - So unhappy with The William by Sonder management and treatment I received. Paid in full (which they ask for when reserving) 6 months prior to stay. Confirmed arrival week of and day of received my access code. As I landed an email notification was received stating "We are overbooked and will be sending you to a sister company in the Financial District. The William was chosen due to its proximity to the theater district. The sister company in the Financial District was nowhere near the theater district. There is at least a $100 difference in the hotels. Marriott/William thinks that a one-night stay and a one-way taxi is enough compensation. I disagree. At the very least, compensation should cover the price difference between the hotels. Exercise caution when booking this hotel.
- Barbara (10/5): - Great facility and location with good value as well! Will definitely consider it again if returning.
- Robin (8/5): - Room was clean and comfortable. Service was great. We would stay again.
- Emily (9/5): Superb - Super clean, great value, very easy check-in and check out, the location is perfect and the staff were super friendly and helpful! We loved our stay and would recommend The William to anyone visiting New York. We also really appreciated the access to laundry at no extra cost. When we arrived the fridge was leaking but we were able to fix it easily.
- Janusz (9/5): Superb -
- Jennifer (7/5): Good -
- Maria (10/5): Exceptional - Front desk staff were very kind and helpful. Penthouse on 5th floor had all we needed. Location so near Grand Central Terminal was perfect for us.
- Sookwang (4/5): Disappointing -
- Lichtash (8/5): Very good -
- Samantha (10/5): - 10/10. Needed a place to stay for a night and this was the perfect spot.
- Ivan (10/5): Exceptional -
- Kristi (8/5): Great Brownstone Setting, Fantastic Location, But Temp Control Difficult - Fantastic location. 3 small blocks from Grand Central Station. You can get anywhere from there. The room, lobby and bar were all very clean and well decorated. The room was really small. It's a remodeled brownstone so a large size wasn't expected really, but smaller than expected. Water didn't get very hot but was warm enough. The room temp, however, was difficult to control. It was hot most of the time (no matter what you set it at) and if you just turned it off it would click.
- Gianna (10/5): - Great stay! Wish they overturned the rooms everyday.
- Anastasia (10/5): - Best service the stuff is top of the top
- Peter (7/5): Good -
- Christopher (8/5): Excellent stay in a great location - Excellent stay. In a great location and surprisingly quiet given its midtown. Staff were super friendly. Room was modern and had everything we needed. Only downside was that there was no safe in the room.
- Selcen (7/5): The location was good, the staff were helpful but the room was average - Location was good It could be cleaner.
- Isabel (5/5): poor - location poor decor, room at rear noisy air conditioning, old dirty rug, chairs in room not usable as stained not to same standard as Nashville Sonder
- Christine (4/5): - as above
- Jane (9/5): Superb -
- Sinem (1/5): Bad -
- Gaddi (8/5): Very good -
- Mary (7/5): Good location in Midtown - The location is great & the room reasonably comfortable with a kettle & fridge & microwave. Loved that there was a bathtub - disappointed that the bath plug was not functioning so couldn’t use it. It was very impersonal - everything is done through remote interaction. Also there was a bank of cabinets outside our bedroom window which hummed loudly all night. Room was small for two & had no desk & not enough electric sockets for work. Didn’t like the absence of housekeeping.
- Anna (8/5): - Very contactless and you pretty much have to download the hotel app to have a seamless stay. There is no room cleaning unless you request it and pay $35 for the service. Busy lobby bar but wasn’t intrusive for me. It was a pleasant stay, but very self-service.
- Charlotte (2/5): - UNCOMFORTABLE AND UNSAFE
This is not truly a hotel- more like a high design hostel.
The bed was incredibly uncomfortable, the TV did not work and room and towels wreaked of bleach.
Most importantly, as a woman traveling alone for work this "hotel" is not safe. It does not have 24/7 staff and the entire first floor is a bar. There are no keys (you have to input all of your information, CC ad ID into an app - digital privacy is another topic) and are given an access code. Anyone with the access code can enter the hotel. There are no id swipes for the elevator so anyone at the bar can get to any floor of the hotel. The access code opens the room and there are NO interior physical locks. Given that there is no one at the front desk after 10pm.... it's not a safe place.
Not staying here again and would not recommend.
- Patricia (10/5): - One has to get one's mind around the fact that the lobby is also the entry area to a very chic speakeasy. We are not bothered by that because my husband thinks that the bartenders make excellent martinis. The neighborhood is very convenient. Our room was spacious, chic and immaculate. But no bathrobes, no umbrellas and no MSNBC. Whatever.
- Daniel (10/5): Photos online don't mislead - This hotel was unique and hard to fault in anyway. The photos online are a true & fair representation of what you get. They do not mislead. This is a keyless hotel (they provide access codes the day before). The rooms offer so much space which is hard to find in manhattan for such a reasonable price. (Obvs prices are subject to change but I paid around £900 for 4 nights for their best room). I also booked a room for friends that was a superior room but not the penthouse. That was around £800 for 4 nights and was equally spacious and comfortable. The rooms both had kitchens, bathrooms, good quality mattresses, dining tables and all the amenities you'd expect. There are large tvs with Roku & apps like Netflix etc. The hotel doesn't run like a regular hotel. There is no house keeping servive at all during your stay. This is actually not a big thing to me as I usually put a "do not disturb" sign on my door anyway when I'm in hotels. The front desk is manned all day and if you need extra towels or more coffee pods for your room then they are happy to provide you with as many as you want, every single day if you want it. The staff are super friendly and they even dropped me a text message after my first night to see if we had settled in OK and to check we was happy with the room
I have been to New York more times than I can count, and this by far is the best accommodation I have ever found within my budget. Location is fantastic too.... walking distance to mist landmarks midtown. And 2 blocks away from Grand Central if you want the subway to travel further distances
- Susan (10/5): Great value - a little studio in the city - Such a convenient room with terrace - and great value for the money!
- Verified traveler (2/5): Worst NYC Sonder - Do Not Book Here - I had to leave this hotel because the penthouse suite I booked had no tv working and no heat. Sonder fixed this and I went to another property of theirs. Do not book this hotel, however. There is a small elevator. Loud restaurant. Tons of stairs.
- Angela (10/5): Absolute gem in the city at a great rate - I hesitate to share this as I want to make sure I can easily get a room next time I'm in the city. It's a great set up. Super central location and lots of breakfast options nearby. Loved the amenities. Staff were wonderful. It took me a while to realise I could use my phone/bluetooth to unlock the door which made the process even easier. Solo visit this time but I would bring my kids next time for sure. The Shakespeare downstairs was also great, staff went our of their way to make me feel welcome.
- Janusz (10/5): Exceptional -
- philip (8/5): - No safe in room. Not many independent restaurants in the area. Staff very good.
- Kiri (8/5): Very good -
- Emma (8/5): - Very nice boutique hotel. I would stay here again!
- Douglas (6/5): Overpriced with basic facilities - Good location in Midtown New York, close to Grand Central station. Staff are friendly and happy to assist with any queries checking in. Room is large with ensuite bathroom. For the amount it cost to say there ($600+ per night), the value for money was terrible. The room is whitewashed concrete, so despite being large, it had no character and felt very soulless. My room also wasn't cleaned during my 2 night stay, and there was no breakfast or food service available in the hotel. There is a british pub below where you can buy lunch & dinner.
- Natalie (8/5): Fabulous - I traveled for medical reasons the staff could not have done more for me whilst I stayed with them, they were beyond kind
- Alison (10/5): Space to relax in comfort - NYC is known for expensive small rooms but The William was positively palatial. Having a kitchen kept food costs down and view with sunshine in the morning a lovely way to get up to explore the city. No tourist surcharge! No extra hidden costs. Everything we could need and great service if we needed. Downstair Shakespeare bar a safe haven for drinks and food. We stayed a week and could not fault it.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Nearly five stars - I would have given this hotel rating of five stars, but the night I visited, there was a very loud party on the first floor (I was on the 5th) that went well after midnight.
- Moerk58 (6/5): An ok Sonder experience. - A small but convenient Sonder (39 between Park and Mad) within walking distance to UN. Stayed for the General Assembly week. Hotel building is old with a bar in the basement and a bar on the first floor. Very noisy when you enter at night, but surprisingly not noisy in the room. At least not in my room which was on 3rd floor.
I usually stay in the Sonder on 39 (The Nash 39th between 2nd and 3rd) but my last stay there was really bad (room dirty, noisy neighbors, shower did not drain, etc), so I tried this option.
The room has an electric kettle and a refrigerator. It is small and compact. There is a laundry room and a station to pick up extra towels etc. A concierge is present during the day.
Would I stay here again? Probably. But will continue to search for a clean and modern place with small kitchen, which is what the Sonder advertises itself to be.
- Annie (9/5): Very central, comfortable stay- would definitely stay again - Great location in East Midtown, close to great bars and eateries and a few minutes walk to the subway/bus. Surprisingly quite due to location of room away from the busy streets of NYC. It’s accessed via a very cool select entertaining venue, which meant at times the steps to the building were difficult to access and doormen operated. This was only an occasional issue but did make it difficult to get in or out at times. Definitely would not stop me from staying again.
- david (10/5): - This was a last minute decision. New York hotels are very expensive. This place is less than half the price of hotels in New York. I definitely wasn't expecting a hotel. I believe this is a brownstone apartment that was converted once upon a time. It was done very well. But it definitely does not have the hotel feel. I think it would be hard to match that level. Having said that, it's very deserving of five stars. This is a great dollar value proposition. Great bang for your buck. I highly recommend.
- WillaB23 (2/5): totally horrible - whoa, worst hotel experience ever ! The door is wide open , no security, and yet they wouldn’t let us into our prepaid room because we didn’t complete the 6 step pre check in uploading gov docs and personal picture protocols - we were locked out ! And had to drive home / 3 hours …. what ????
- Verified traveler (6/5): Outdated, dirty - Dirty, outdated, overall disappointing stay. I’ve stayed in different Sonder locations so I was quite shocked at the poor conditions of The William. I originally booked (and paid) an early check-in for a double bed room, just for the front desk to tell us the room wasn’t available as we went to check in. Instead, they put us in two separate rooms, which were able to enter 1.5 hours after our scheduled check in time. They still tried to charge us for the early check-in fee despite not respecting our early check in request!!!! After some back and forth, they finally agreed to refund me but that whole interaction was so demeaning and condescending. Elevators are super slow too.
- Amy (10/5): So much space!!! - The William was great! I thought the contactless check in would be strange, but was actually super convenient. Our room was huge, especially for nyc! Fully appointed kitchen with 2 burners, full cookware and dishes, mini fridge, microwave, sink and coffee machine was amazing! We cooked our own breakfast every morning. Bed was comfy and smart TVs worked great. Shower drained really slow, that was the only negative. Loved the overall boutique feel of the hotel. Location was walkable to several different subway stations, grocery, coffee. Just loved our stay!
- Katherine (2/5): If you have a problem you are on your own... - Spent two days here, had a major issue each day, ended up leaving to go to another hotel.
The hotel is mostly run by their app. My first night the app could not open my door, which kept me locked out for half hour while trying to get help via the app as all hotel staff is gone late night. After 20 mins on chat the online rep was not able to help me figure out the problem with the mobile key not working and the pin pad entry code alternative not working either. They left the chat telling me to find staff on property, which as part Sonder model... There is no nighttime staff on property. Remained locked out until I figured out the app key error deactivates pinpad use and locks it. The next day I find the toilet that had not worked well from the start was now totally blocked. I spent next hour trying to get help from chat, (where rep literally stopped responding when I pointed out if they could not fix the toilet they needed to reimburse for room) then phone and on site staff, was hilariously offered a late check out (but no solution to a room with no working toilet and told to use lobby four floors down, or move to a hotel far away from location where there is not subway on east river. ) Paid for second hotel around the corner.
- Michael (10/5): - No problems with this hotel.
- Scott (9/5): Excellent, historic and efficient hotel in a great location - As an old social club, the building is beautiful, and it's amazing to have a speakeasy with multiple rooms downstairs. Very friendly workers who will get you whatever you need. The room was comfy with lots of light. The hallways and elevator, in the dead of summer, could use some sort of air whether a conditioner or fan. Not a dealbreaker, but sometimes waiting for the elevator can get very hot. But that was my only gripe!
- Elizabeth (9/5): Superb -
- Darren (9/5): Superb -
- Aisha (10/5): Exceptional -
- Kofine (8/5): - Great
- Adam (10/5): Exceptional -
- panekmj (10/5): Great room and service - Great room, and Chloe and the team provided very warm service that went above and beyond. We love Sonders and stay in them frequently. They don't come to turn the room (that's the gimmick of the brand), but if you don't mind that you can stay in a great location at a very affordable price
- Andrew (8/5): Very good -
- Daniel (10/5): Relaxing - Convenient, comfortable. All good
- AZbeachgrl (8/5): Don’t expect a full hotel experience - The location is great - close to Grand Central station and gems like the Morgan Library.
Pros: great location, historic building, two bars on site (I didn’t hear any noise from the bars in a third floor room), helpful and friendly staff, free laundry room (they have complimentary laundry detergent at the front desk), quiet
Cons: front desk not staffed overnight, no security (and nothing to keep drunk bar patrons from going upstairs to hotel floors if they wanted to), some people will love that you get your door code via email and never have a key but I would just prefer the key, because its a historic building there are very few outlets in the rooms (I unplugged the coffee machine to get to a plug a bit closer to the bed)
If traveling with another person and visiting on vacation, I would stay here again. When solo, I likely will pass on The William and book with a hotel that has security and 24/7 desk staff.
- BruceF627 (10/5): Stylish Refurbished Townhouse Hotel, Amazing Location, Friendly Staff - Hotel rooms in NY city are extortionately expensive, so we were happy to discover the Sonder chain of Hotels and The William, good value for money, budget boutique style accomodation. Amazing location near Grand Central Station and The Empire State building. I believe we were given an upgrade as we weren't expecting the useful mini kitchenette. Good sizes room, stylishly decorated, plenty of storage. Good sized bathroom, with great toiletries but the all too common problem of no shelving or place to put toiletry bags etc and too short a shower screen meaning water went everywhere.
Large window with balcony, although there is a very large and noisy communal AC units outside that means you have to keep door shut. Very interesting communal areas and quirky British type pub in the basement. Staff were friendly. We would certainly be very happy to stay here again on our next trip to NYC
- Eric (6/5): - This hotel property did not meet my expectations.
- Henk (7/5): Inhad a great stay. Staff is friendly - Location, ambiance downstairs Rooms do not match the ambiance of the downstairs.
- Venture61693395414 (10/5): A great NYC getaway spot… - Great location, convenient to Penn Station, theater, jazz clubs, shopping, and groceries. Friendly staff. Overall a very positive experience. Don’t let the lobby’s dim lighting deter you…it’s spooky when you walk in but when you arrive at your floor the halls and rooms are well lit. Nice bar and restaurant in the building too.
- Shane (8/5): Very good -
- Lisa (7/5): Does what it has to do - Good location in Manhattan The hotel doesn’t really have a soul, there’s nothing to it
- Cristian (10/5): The place, the people, the location, everything was great! - Everything was perfect! It’s difficult the entrance by the stairs, but it’s not a big problem.
- nancymA7373XN (10/5): Easy comfort in Manhattan - Really nice experience. Easy to check-in, friendly front desk staff, big bright comfortable room, great shower, cozy bed, fantastic location. Fabulous well known bar on the lower level I would definitely stay here again when traveling to NYC.
- Patricia (8/5): Wonderfully helpful and friendly staff, comfortable and well equipped room and great location! -
- Patricia (7/5): the price was budget friendly and we really appreciated the peacefulness. - the staff couldn't have been friendler. we were there for 5 nights and it was very quiet. the pictures on the website were very misleading. it appeared that their lobby re-created a british men's club with beautiful wooden bookcases filled with books, and overstuffed chairs. the reality was that there was no lobby--just a counter to check in--there were 2 rooms off the entranceway that served cocktails to non guests. they seemed very popular with 20 somethings. also no maid service for our stay; however if we needed something they were happy to oblige.
- Paul (4/5): Not my choice of place to stay on my next visit to New York. - Location was good, close to mid-town where my meetings were being held. No room service. This was not clear at the time of booking. While I can make my bed, I did not appreciate having old coffee cups lying in the trash for 5 days. The room was on the third floor and therefore close to street level with the corresponding noise level.
- Lisa (10/5): - We loved the William! Staff was very cool and helpful. We loved the Raines Law room bar - great vibe and excellent cocktails. The hotel rooms are huge by NYC standards, and we were 20 minutes from anywhere we wanted to go. We will be back!
- Stephen (9/5): Superb - Very spacious room with kitchen and sitting area.
Great location, very handy for Grand Central Station and midtown.
Nice bars downstairs, lots of buzz around them but no noise in the room from them. Nothing all good.
- Adam (9/5): Superb -
- Elena (10/5): - The hotel is a very nice place to stay at. Definitely next time will stay there again
- John (9/5): Staying at the William was an important part of a most excellent holiday. - The excellent staff and the assistance they gave us.
Location of property. Booking of personal car to airport upon leaving. Upgrading of hotel room at no extra charge. Nothing.
- Chris (7/5): Fantastic Stay... Staff was great.... Perfect location - FANTASTIC Location...
Room was simple but spacious and bed was very comfortable
Facility was clean.
Solid construction you didn't hear anything from the rooms around you
Bonus for having a speakeasy and a good restaurant on the property They were having heating issues the week we were there... not a standard problem but did make it chilly getting out of bed in the morning.
The in room coffee maker could use a cleaning as well as the freezer in the in room fridge (But a total plus that the room had both)
The water in the shower could have been a few degrees warmer than lukewarm... but that might have been inline with the heating issue (I am fairly sure it was boiler heat)
- Peter (8/5): Great location, good value, questionable comfort - all good ability to control room temperature and fan
- Agrithaa (8/5): Perfect location! - Great location! Just outside of the main hustle and bustle of midtown but still very close to grand central and all other main attractions. Staff were friendly and helpful. The bar downstairs was such a cosy little place - has the “how I met your mother” vibes! Some of the fittings could have been tidied up a little.
- Christine (8/5): Very good -
- Eric J (10/5): - It was great. I strongly suggest getting the kitchenette. We were able to cook and relax. Tv didn’t work in one room but we didn’t watch enough anyway. Bar downstairs and the bar further downstairs seemed cool but we didn’t go. If you go stay here tell them I said hello!
- Charles (3/5): My first time at William Sonder - I can’t say there was anything that stood out. The raspberry and stark white color of my room was a bit manic for me. The bathroom shower was strange, lots of water spilling out because the glass was too small. The room easily collected smell as the ventilation was limited at best. The people at the front desk seemed checked out, although when I engaged they were nice. The bar was a joke and the front room was depressing with horrible artwork, think Edvard Munch but with less impact. On top of this, I paid dearly. I would look elsewhere.
- Catherine (9/5): Great stay , would use again - Great location , lovely small hotel with fabulous cocktail bar downstairs which was well used by locals in the weekend.
Only 10 min to central Station so easy to get around . NA
