- John (10/5): - We like that every room is unique. The staff is friendly and helpful. The rooms are clean. There is free parking about a half a block from the inn. The tavern is great and they have the best burgers. It's perfect for a overnight visit to the area. Another plus for us was the spirit that visited us.š

- Candice (8/5): Old world charm - Everyone here is so nice, and the hotel itself along with the Tavern is extremely unique and awesome! The only issues we had was that there was really loud music coming from downstairs until about 2 or 2:30 in the morning which made it difficult to sleep, and the room got pretty warm since the AC unit was small and on the other side of the room. (That was to be expected due to the age of the property.) We would definitely come back here and adjust ourselves accordingly.

- Leah (4/5): - Cool historic house in great location but donāt stay there. Narrow long staircases from the 1700ās are not fun for schlepping bags and thereās no elevator. Air conditioner didnāt work well and didnāt work at all. We were too tired to go downstairs and find someone to help and thereās no phone in the room. Thereās no staff at the desk either you have to find the bartender in the noisy crowded bar (who was very nice and helpful). Parking is on the street and thereās nowhere to stop in front to unload bags. Itās just an awful experience.
- Mary Nicole (6/5): - The location is great and the property is lovely - but the Haunted Porter room had ants and felt very musty, likely due to the air conditioning unit plus the rugs in the room (I stayed on particularly hot and humid nights). Also had a knock on the bedroom door in the middle of the night from a staff member at the adjoining restaurant saying I hadnāt paid a bill. I was never at the restaurant so she had the wrong room and she apologized, but getting awakened in the middle of the night is decidedly non-restful. The front desk was never manned during my entire stay ā you had to go into the restaurant to find anyone to help you. Great location, but Iād like to see some improvements in the management before Iāll stay here again.

As someone else said, it's really a bar that rents rooms. We were directly above the bar and heard music through the floor until very late. Parking is insufficient and we ended up with a street-parking ticket.

- Susan (6/5): Great location. Old school hotel. - The location was great but unfortunately the parking is inconvenient. There is a 2 hour time limit so I kept having to move my car. The room was very nice but no real amenities. Also I didnāt expect a 3 story walk up and no elevator. All in all the rooms are clean and right in the center of town making shopping and walking easy.
- Alysha (10/5): - Very charming historic inn. Staff was nice and helpful upon check-in, and when i accidentally locked my key in the room. I booked the Bouvier room on the 3rd floor which was quiet and comfortable. Being a historic inn, I went in with the expectation that it would be low frills, which is was. But for the price, I think it's a great option for anyone staying in the Newtown area who wants historic charm and to be in the walkable State Street area.
- Marguerite (4/5): - The area is perfect and the staff very nice. The room was cute but small. The bed sat very high so you have to climb up into it and I'm a tall person. The toilet ran all night along and the handle was broke. The walls are very thin and we could hear the people in the rooms above and at the bar below very loudly through at least 3 am. So, was not able to sleep. I could see the benefits of cute historical building and nice area but I would not stay here again due to the noise, small/high bed, and desk in room was sticky.

- Bridget (4/5): - This hotel is mediocre at best. The worst part were all the stairs that were spiral and steep. If you have trouble with stairs or bad knees or balance issues this place is not for you. The guy at the desk was nice and helpful but at check out there was no one to help with my luggage and I literally had to kick them down the stairs hoping I donāt break my neck. Also donāt expect anything to drink or eat. There wasnāt even any coffee or tea available. Usually places like this have coffee and some snacks. There was nothing. No view either, just the top of a roof. The parking is terrible. The man at the front desk told us to park around the back and that the door is always open but guess what. It was locked the day of check out and we had to go around the front then the back to get the car. We wonāt be staying here again.

- Halbert (8/5): - Itās fun staying in a b&b that is hundreds of years old. Itās beautiful. Just remember it is very old with floors that are uneven and steep winding stairs to get around. The staff is very friendly with a great bar and restaurant. If you have mobility issues with stairs or need large restrooms that are easily accessible, this is not the place for you. Had a great time.

- Cynthia (10/5): Loved the Historic Charm! - My husband and I frequented The Temperance House restaurant and tavern and always wanted to know what the rooms were like. We were moving out of the area and had sold our house and needed housing for one night so I decided to surprise him. We stayed in one of the suites and the historic charm was incredible, but you have to value that charm. We had all the amenities we needed but it isnāt a modern hotel. Glad we went and would recommend to others.

As far as the building, we loved the uneven floors and old-school character of the hotel. Made you feel like you traveled back in time. Would definitely stay there again.

- Raphael (2/5): - Their warning that some tavern noise should be expected is greatly understated. The music from the live band at night was so loud that we could hardly hear our tv and could no way fall asleep after a long travel day. We checked out the very next morning explaining that the music was too loud. They offered a different room but given how loud the band was, we could not imagine that any of the rooms could be sufficiently quiet. We felt that we had a legitimate reason but they still charged us for a second night since we could not provide 24 hours advance notice. We therefore give them a one star rating. Of course, if you like loud live band music and going to bed late, then this place would be great.

- dawn (4/5): Quaint but noisey - This was a very old hotel, I did not expect much in modern amenities. Room was very quaint but tough for two people to stay in one bed that is locked in on three sides. Also it was very noisy all night long. There was loud music playing till 2:00 a.m. and people partying all night . I tried calling the front desk but it is an on demand Hotel overnight. And then our smoke alarm went off at 8:00 a.m. so we packed up and left. But once again front desk was unmanned so we dropped our key and left. The only good thing about this hotel was the location. A very nice area in town. And the staff we did see it earlier in the evening was very friendly.

- Curt (8/5): Nice Place, may need extra Help with Staff - My wife and I arrived at the Temperance House and approached the desk to check in. We waited, and waited, and waited. After 15-20 minutes I called the phone number on one of their business cards. The phone at the desk rang but so did someone else asking if she could help. I explained that we were trying to check in. We were told that someone would be there. We waited, and waited, and waited some more. I called the number again after a considerable wait time. The receptionist finally arrived and checked us in and showed us to our room. We learned that she was the bartender and also working the restaurant. This is an older establishment and I would be interested in hearing about its history. Our room was comfortable and clean.

- Kerrie (8/5): Nice overnight stay, but loud - Room in hotel was nicely appointed and comfortable. Had all the necessities. Only complaint was that the room was on the street above the bar/tavern, so when people were leaving the bar they were laughing and talking quite loud (voices carry at night), which was disruptive to our sleep. Perhaps bar patrons should be reminded that the Temperance House is also a hotelā¦

I did not get to sleep until it was quiet. So. If you go there, I recommend hanging in the bar until closing, then get a good night's rest rest.

- Marisa (10/5): Great stay, free upgrade - We had a great stay at the Temperance for four nights. The owner was friendly and upgraded us for free because she had the space! Tip: we couldnāt hear any of the live music on Wednesdays from the downstairs bar from our room on the third floor, but youād be able to hear it on the second floor. Fun to stay in a historical space right on the main street of Newtown.

Twenty minutes later a woman came out and said she didnāt know we were there. She then proceeded to complete the checkin process. The bathroom could have been cleaner. And we were in a loft and you had to be careful not to bump your head when moving around the bed. Parking was a little tricky. The location was good though - right in the town. The town is nice.

- Brinkley (10/5): - I stay here when I visit my company's facilities in the area. I love the historical aspect of this inn, and the fact that a good restaurant and fantastic bar are attached make it that much better! Each room is unique and as long as you can do without an elevator and climb a flight or two of stairs, you will be pleased with the property. Overnight parking is available and easy, and free, on the street in front.

There was a leak right outside our door and the carpet looks really dirty and had a little smell. We had the maid sign out and we never received towel replenishment and no one ever came. No one was ever at the front to ask. We stayed from Friday to Sunday.
- Liz (10/5): Recommend. - Historic building. Very cool tavern with live music and good food. Staff was friendly and helpful. If you like blackout curtains- there aren't any. Also the info on the room door said continental breakfast. That didn't happen. Both days. So don't count on that but cute little coffee place next door, breakfast joint called Pat's down the street, and the Amish Market is easily walkable and they had all kinds of good stuff.

- Robert (10/5): Great stay over - The staff was very friendly and helpful and the room and bed was very comfortable. The a/c and cable tv was excellant. I would def stay there again!!

- Jeffrey (10/5): - The staff were exceptionally accommodating - the only issues being where reservations made through Expedia could not be altered by the property, although they were willing to do so. State Street is very walkable, with a number of local shops and dining options in addition to the restaurant at Temperance House itself. We appreciate unique older properties, and Temperance House was exactly that.
- William (10/5): - Located in the heart of the town near restaurants and shops. Parking is convenient.
- Katherine (6/5): - The bar noise was very loud in room 5. We never received an answer to our query about a room change or the non-existent continental breakfast.
- Paul (2/5): Itās not about details itās about basics! - It was in the 20s outside There was no heat in the room I was apparently the only guest, the room was directly above the noisy bar. When I inquired, the receptionist/bartender seemed indifferent. I said, ā I have been traveling 18 hours, I am exhausted, there are blankets, Iāll manage. Do not disturb me!ā Sometime later someone woke me pounding on the door offering to move me to another room so the noise from the bar wouldnāt keep me āup all nightā. I told them no. From then until I fell asleep around 1:00 AM I heard nothing except my tears chattering as I shivered. Somebody clearly messed up.

- Joseph (8/5): Joeās review - Great atmosphere with entertainment nightly. Staff very friendly. The only drawback is that they are shorthanded so the bartender has to do double duty as the front desk clerk. Overall great place.
- maureen k (8/5): - 5th time staying here. Brought my daughter and grandson this time. A walk back in time. Like the feel of this Inn. Love the fact that you can walk out the front door and walk to the stores, coffee shop, bank, etc. Especially like looking at all of the old historic buildings. We feel safe in this town and the merchants are friendly and accommodating. Nice family place. Certain we will return.
- Dan (8/5): - An 18th century house made into an inn. Right in the middle of a wonderful area of all houses and beautiful shops. My only complaint is that the cable TV was virtually nonexistent, and there was no coffee maker for this price. They should have a coffee maker.
- GAIL (2/5): - PROPERTY WAS VERY INCONVIENT TO PARK AND WHEN CHECKING IN THERE WAS NO ONE TO CHECK YOU IN. waited in foyer for 10 minutes then went to look for someone in the back of hotel.same checking out. staff seemed more interested in i phone and not patrons. would not stay there again.

- Antonia (10/5): - The historical aspect was very interesting. Did not care for parking arrangements. Only room for 4 cars in rear of property. 2 hour parking in front. Not convenient.

- Carol (6/5): - They are very short staffed. The hotel and bar were being run by the same lone individual who was clearly stretched thin. Still, the place has some sort of charm and felt a bit like an old fashioned inn. The continental breakfast was wonderful.

- Emma (10/5): - I really enjoyed the overall look and feel of the building & the staff was very pleasant.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Could be better. - It is an historic hotel, so I have expectations that take that into account. However, there was no real coffee (just decaf) in the morning, and I couldn't find anyone to fix it. Also, even though my total was just under $200, the bathroom only had a half full shampoo and a couple of tiny soaps. If you need help, you have to go to the bar to get it, because there is seldom anyone at the front desk and no way to find the person in charge other than walking around and asking people.
- Nicholas (10/5): Great hotel - Old world charm!! Loved it. Floors were creaky, hallways were narrow. It was great! Nick at front desk check in so polite. Escorted us to our room. Plenty of free street parking. Right on avenue so really nice to exit hotel and have shopping, coffee, ice cream right there. Short ride to Peddlerās Village also made for a nice day. Would definitely stay again.
