The hotel has recently changed hands which caused slight problems regarding the payment but the manager seemed satisfied with the explanation and I am sure that this wouldn't happen in the future.

- Stephen (4/5): Comfortable but uninspiring - Beautiful location in the centre of Forres The hotel is in need of modernisation. I stayed in Room 207 and the facilities were outdated and tired. The shower was very noisy and intermittent, the tea/coffee tray was poorly stocked and not refreshed, the room didn't get made up each day and the TV was mounted too high on the wall. I paid £250+ for two nights and felt it was too expensive. This hotel has long had a virtual monopoly in Forres and seems to exploit this.

At no time when booking were we told the cost of the room was excluding vat nor was the food menu. This needs to be addressed as an additional £80 charge was totally unexpected. We use booking.com for most of our travels and haven't come across this before.

The staff are all fantastic, really welcoming and accommodating. Great communication. Lovely food in the restaurant for dinner. Our room needed a bit of painting which they’re planning to do over winter but it didn’t detract from a lovely stay or the character of the hotel.

Location. Comfortable bed. Warm room. Plenty of hot water. Nice public areas. Evening meal very well cooked and presented. Room needs serious updating. 1980s decor & dodgy electrics. Chipped & worn paint. Ensuite bathroom a museum piece. Huge , old-fashioned bath, with out dated small shower over it. The breakfast offer is basic. Dreadful coffee is surely not acceptable? Breakfasts & room and staffing levels all done to the absolute minimum, cheapest materials. Do not understand why this hotel is 4* rated. It used to be one of the best hotels in Moray. It could be utterly fabulous: needs a new owner.

- Maria (8/5): We enjoyed our stay. - The breakfast was excellent. I would go as far as to say, the best I've had in a hotel. Perfectly cooked to order with quality ingredients. A good selection on offer. I especially liked the fresh fruit salad that had obviously been made that morning and not from a tin. My husband enjoyed the pastries. A beautiful building in a nice area but not too far from anything. Everyone we came into contact with was very polite, attentive and welcoming. Very comfortable bed and nice linen and towels. It was our wedding anniversary the evening we stayed and the member of staff who served us made it special by giving us a nice table in the restaurant and he made sure we were happy and had everything we needed. The bathroom, although very clean was in need of a bit of updating.

The interior was beautiful, oak panelling and big comfy leather chairs and sofas. The grounds were a delight and the location was perfect for our needs. The evening meal options were delicious and great value for money. It would have been nice to have fresh bread available for breakfast, not just the sliced brown or white option. But that's just a personal opinion.

The hotel building really is lovely, The staff are polite and friendly, the breakfast is excellent. The garden is lovely. The only downside is that the bathroom is a bit tired. They really need to refurbish the bathrooms to match the rest of the hotel.
