We were thoroughly impressed by the comfort and restoration of the property. The breakfast was served in the beautifully restored dining room by our host all kitted up in his kilt. We have stayed in many inns & B&B's - this was by far the best. The stairs were a bit of a killer especially with a hip problem

Für den Kontakt mit anderen Reisenden stand ein großer, schöner Balkon zur Verfügung. Auf viele Details wurde geachtet - hochwertige Pflegeprodukte, Werthers Echte für den kleinen Süßhunger zwischendurch. Morgens servierte der Landlord das Frühstück im Schottenrock. Andrea (9/5): The cutest little inn on our journey through Nova Scotia. - What a lovely charming place to stay. Sandy & Cathy were such lovely hosts, very friendly and kind. My husband being Scotish, I thought this would be a great place to stay for us. (He loved it) The building is lovely, peaceful, and very quiet. We did find the room on the small side, and there was no seating in the bedroom, just the bed and small chair. The little details in the bathroom were also such a nice touch, they really thought of everything! The library area, though, was a nice seating area. The charm of history was great from the hosts, and the artwork throughout was amazing. A delightful little continental breakfast with Sandy in his authentic Scottish kilt topped it off! It was very easy to walk to the waterfront, and a few restaurants to choose from were also nice. We did love talking to the hosts about their inn and my because my husband's Scottish, they chatted about "home." There is no elevator, so you have to walk quite a few steps, so it's not easy if you have mobility issues. We didn't mind the stairs at all, and the patio area was awesome. A cute little green space was also a nice addition for anyone to enjoy outside. Thank you, guys, for a wonderful experience! We loved this little town of Pictou. It's definitely worth staying for more than 1 night, which we only had time for. We really loved this little town on our journey thru the East Coast. We found the bed a bit too firm for us, but the pillows and sheets were lovely. The shower is very tiny, but it worked. We didn't mind there was no TV, but if you like to have that, there aren't any in the rooms.
William (9/5): - Our room was comfortable and quiet, and the inn’s location is a strong positive…a simple stroll from the waterfront and the town’s quaint business area. Best of all is the inn keeper. He welcomed us, hosted a reception for guests and kept conversations flowing, made dinner reservations for us, and offered directions that improved upon GPS. We we returned from dinner, he and other guests were still sitting on the balcony patio talking late into the evening.

It was silver service and the food was nice, albeit you only had the choice of yoghurt granola with blueberries followed by croissant.(first course / second course). No TVs in the rooms.

Kristof (10/5): Perfect place for a stop-over in charming Pictou - We had a perfect stop-over at the Scotsman Inn. We loved everything, from the historic building to the comfy rooms to the many thoughtful touches. Best of all we liked our gracious hosts.
Gert (2/5): - Nice and clean rooms. Close situated to the seaside, many restaurant options. If you mind steep stairs (as mentioned on the proberties homepage), this could be an issue – not surprising in a historical house. When we arrived, we took the stairs on the back front (which is not unusual for guests in this B&B) because front door was closed. A gentleman (who later turned out as our host) asked us if we want to check in (he skipped greeting or introducing himself). Further on, he looked down to our car on the parking area and stated, obviously unpleased: “You are standing here for a while, aren´t you?” After that, he mumbled: “Crazy…” While checking our reservation, he shouted to a lady (never introduced to her, probably his wife). behind about our nationality. Furthermore, when I came later back to reception corner I overheard our host informing another new guest about our national origin. The funny interaction proceeded during breakfast. We had nice chats with the others guest and plenty of time, because providing us with coffee, muesli, packed yoghurt, some berries and (Tata !) a crisped croissant tool nearly an our. Mainly because our host need to interfere every conversation. Some other guests liked it. Some not. I should add that the question of a fellow guest about the ingredients of the muesli (allergic issues) was answered with a grumpy: “I don’t know”. And so on…. Next day we had a wonderful breakfast at the marina. To cut a long story short: And after travelling 30 years all over the world and using B&B´s extensively, we never met such an attitude and behaviour. Main purpose of the establishment seems not to be accommodate paying guests. It is a platform for a show you can’t classify as a tragedy or a comedy.

Kelley (9/5): Don’t hesitate to book this splendid historic inn. - Charming, delightful inn. Sparkling clean, with lovely toiletries. Clean crisp fresh smelling linens. Easy parking. Nice view of the harbour. Easy walking distance to sights, pubs, and dining. Beautiful grounds and outdoor deck to sit on in the evening. Sandy is a quick witted, charismatic, amusing inn-keeper who serves breakfast wearing a “kilt”. Lots of stairs if you are on the 3rd level. We were aware of that before booking. Just took a small carry on up to our room rather than the large suitcases. Limited options for breakfast. No ice in the common refrigerator. There are no TV’s which may bother some folks. We just missed tuning in to the morning news.

Sandy personally served everyone their breakfast in such a classy yet friendly way, in a formal dining room complete with china and all the trimmings. It was a very special experience.

Richard (4/5): - Too much Sandy! While this is a nicely appointed and restored building, the host, Sandy, is just too much. While he was pleasant and accommodating in small doses, when we were alone with him over breakfast things became unpleasant. He simply needs to be the centre of attention at all times. And when discussion strayed to politics ( he’s a big Trump fan) and I expressed a contrary view, he presumed to “know exactly how I think” even though he hadn’t really paid attention to anything I had said up until then. My wife became very stressed and we just hightailed it out of there. Earlier in the conversation Sandy went on for an uncomfortably long time about how he loves to make clever or insulting replies to people who post negative reviews. So I will be interested to see what he does with this. Over to you, Sandy.

Jacqueline (8/5): - We very much enjoyed our two night stay at The Scotsman’s Inn. Sandy and Cathy were convivial hosts and provided us with a lot of helpful advice on areas of local interest and our journey onwards to Cape Breton. The accommodation was spotlessly clean and the bed/mattress was very comfortable. The Inn had been lovingly restored and was full of character. A small improvement for us would have been the provision of natural yoghurt and decaf coffee for breakfast.

As the owners are the sole employees there was no flexibility with check in time (and we got an ear full arriving less than 5 mins early). The Owner is also very vocal on political opinions which raised eyebrows with us and several guests. All in all, it was a fair stay.
Michael (10/5): - Sandy & Cathy are terrific hosts and its a beautiful historic property. Sandy is a character and will keep you laughing! We had a great time and would have liked to be there for more than one night. We would absolutely stay there again.

Le charme équilibre les inconvénients d'un séjour dans une maison historique. Une belle ambiance au déjeuner. Très bien situé, on a accès aux restaurants et au bord de mer à pied. C'est l'occasion de vivre au moins une nuit dans une maison plus que centenaire. Lit confortable. La douche était très petite, même si on comprend qu'une maison de cette époque implique des défis pour ce genre d'équipement. La chambre aussi était petite. Il n'y avait pas de petit frigo.

Raymond (9/5): This heritage inn provided a wonderful overnight stay in Pictou. - Excellent location; walking distance to the Pictou waterfront attractions. Nice to have an attached parking lot. Our host was super friendly and quite the character. Breakfast was an "event", with freshly prepared, tasty food and pleasant conversation with the other guests. Our room was cozy and comfortable. Having our room on the top floor meant bringing our bags up a few flights of stairs, although the host offered his help with this.
Diane (6/5): Good and not so good - The bed was very comfortable, the bathroom had lotion, the host was interesting to talk with and helpful with planning. We enjoyed having breakfast at the family table with the other guests. The shower was too small, at most 2'x2'. Breakfast was metered out and limited. When we reserved, the description indicated that e had a sea view. We did not, we had a side view to another room. It felt like they were trying to impose their living style on us. Ex- why do you even need air conditioning, they don't have it in Europe.

Cynthia (10/5): - This was our favourite accommodation on our recent trip to Nova Scotia and PEI. The room with private bath was gorgeous. The hospitality was superb. Our host, Sandy, was charming and an outstanding storyteller. Breakfasts were a delightful and delish experience with Sandy serving in his kilt while Kathy baked croissants in the kitchen. Cannot speak highly enough about this memorable stay.
Michael (8/5): - Authentic inn run by a Scotsman and his wife; he serves breakfast in the dining room in his kilt. He has a wealth of knowledge about the history of the area. Our room was quaint in a visiting-your-aunt-in the-country kind of way. Great location for exploring Pictou.

I wanted the experience of stepping off a ship into a new land, and that’s exactly what it felt like—in the best way. Breakfast was wonderful, shared with a true Scotsman and his incredible hospitality. (Pack light as there is no elevator as it was built in the 1800's)

Jaana (6/5): Read before booking - What a great place this charming 3 star historical home could be under a different administration! King rooms had comfy beds and the back terrace offered a great outdoor space to enjoy a free glass of wine and get to know other travelers. However, the good vibes unraveled very quickly when the owner deemed it appropriate to loudly start voicing his political opinions with paying customers. Awkward and offensive. Unless you condone the things that are currently happening south of our border or hate Canada & its leadership, stay clear! I am still trying to forget some of the vile things this man let out of his mouth in support of the current US leader. Please don't take my word for it, just read Sandy's abrasive responses to any traveler reviews that list deficiencies of his property or describe this man's obnoxious character. Breakfast rooms are lovely but for the 3 people in my group who had breakfast, the continental offerings were underwhelming. To end this review on a positive note, we were thankful to be able to return a forgotten room key to a market 15 mins away from Pictou. Our oversight!

Valerie (10/5): The Quintessential Small Local Inn Experience - When traveling it is a unique treat to stay at a place like the Scotsman Inn where the proprietors provide not just a place to stay, but a wholly enjoyable experience. I read the reviews of the Scotsman Inn after staying here and had to chuckle at some of the comments about Sandy, the proprietor. He is, indeed, a unique personality, but meeting folks like him when I travel is always the highlight of my trips. If you want to stay in a non-descript hotel with boring front desk clerk, this inn is not for you. I enjoyed learning how Sandy found the Inn and made it what it is today, which BTW, is beautiful and wonderfully comfortable and he clearly takes great pride in opening his property to guests. Sitting on the patio with him and his wife and drinking complimentary wine was the perfect end to a long day of traveling. We stayed up late getting to know some of the other guests, another treat of the Scotsman Inn where there are lots of spaces to hang out with other guests and get to know folks from around the world. Breakfast was an event with Sandy serving in a kilt in a formal dining room. Can't say I have ever had THAT experience before! Sandy took a lot of time to map out our journey to Fundy Bay the next day and the route he suggested was perfect for seeing the countryside. We (four ladies traveling together) truly loved staying here and getting to know Sandy. If you stay ask him about the weather stick. He swears it works, but IDK. It rained. Thanks for an amazing stay! I can't think of a thing I would change.
Nancy (9/5): Beautiful Inn - The Inn is lovely as were our rooms. However they were on the top (4th) floor and there is no elevator. The breakfast consisted of fresh blueberries with granola and a small container of yogurt. Plus a croissant and tea, coffee, and orange juice. There is off street parking provided. It's in the center of town within walking distance of several restaurants.
