Guest Reviews
- d0ddg (10/5): Historic, Clean, Comfort, & Value - We drove past larger hotels and not far off the interstate due to the low rate for a “junior queen” room with 4.3 ratings on travel advisor. Our New Year’s eve visit to this hotel was in a historic setting, clean, run by a very professional front desk receptionist, and parking was easy and safe. The hotel sits on a main street with lots of varied shops, a local museum, and local restaurants within 2 blocks. The room, towels, bathroom, and bed linens were very clean. The paint and room curtains looked new, the TV large, and the room furnishings were very appropriate and comfortable. The bathroom was large and almost completely tiled (very clean) with a large porcelain tub. This was an excellent value, wonderful rest, and all in a beautiful building with decades of history. We highly recommend it. Overall, it felt like omfort and cleanliness in a time warp!
- RobynSmith42 (8/5): Mostly enjoyed our stay - We stayed at the General Francis Marion for one night in mid-November. The hotel had a weird vibe that I enjoyed. I joked to my husband that I half expected a man in a trench coat and fedora to walk past me in the hall and say, "Hello, doll." The room was large and the bathroom was huge. Everything was clean and comfortable, and I especially liked the firm pillows. The breakfast wasn't bad, although very carb-heavy and an egg offering would have been welcome. I appreciated the 24-hour coffee bar. What is keeping me from giving a 5-star review are two points. First, the room was too hot and stuffy and we couldn't get the AC to turn on. Second, there didn't seem to be a way to get from the parking lot to the front desk and elevators without going down a set if four stairs and immediately up another set of four stairs. At our age and with full suitcases, it wasn't easy - if you use a wheelchair or walker I think it would have been impossible.
- Gayenelle (10/5): Sisters Get Away Weekend - Overall, everything was wonderful. The room could use a little more light (only 1 lamp and no ceiling light) but other than that it was really nice. Very clean, etc. Would definitely stay here again.
The food at the restaurant was not as good as expected and very slow. We realized that it was a show night so we got there extra early. Once we were served, the waitress never came back. We had to track her down for a drink refill and then again for the bill. We realized that it had gotten crowded, however we should not have been forgotten.
- Catherine (10/5): - Quaint hotel in a lovely little historic town.
- Richard (10/5): - Great piece of history! Worth the stay. Breakfast could use an upgrade.
- William (8/5): - Staff friendly
- Linda (10/5): - nice place to stay!
- Anna (8/5): - Room was smaller but nice. Bathroom was updated and had nice amenities and spacious in comparison to room size. The room was super clean and so was the bathroom. Parking is limited on site and I had to park in the public free parking garage about a half block away. Several stairs, especially from parking lot to side door to elevator. Staff was very nice and helpful but she didn't know if the room had a USB-C charging port or just a USB normal. In fact, she told me there was not a USB-C port in the charger under the lamp. Luckily I went upstairs to double check before trekking to the Walmart and the charging station does have a USB-C port plus 2 regular USBs. Saved me a trip to Walmart a few miles away about 10pm. I just thought at this high quality of property that the front desk staff would be aware of the amenities offered in the rooms. There is a restaurant onsite with a bar. If you are in the area for work or travel I think this is the nicest place within several interstate exits, but it is a little pricey.
- Janet (8/5): - We live the quietness of the hotel . The beds were comfortable but could use additional lighting brighter lights, higher toilet and coffee maker. A stand inside bathroom like a shelf for personal items.. the tub was slippery almost fell.. just a few suggestions as we travel a lot but we would definitely stay here again!!
- Gary (8/5): - Well worth the stay. Hotel and town had great history. Hotel was built in 1927. Original furniture but all the necessary udates.
- Vicky (10/5): - Highly recommend.
- Anne (8/5): - It was a nice overnight to go to the theater next door.
- Lynn (8/5): - OK. Quiet. Comfortable bed.
Good coffee but rest of breakfast like a 2 star at best. Room very small . Price good. You get what you pay for.
- adam (8/5): - Pleasant, clean, old property charm, walkable for dining. Would absolutely stay again.
- Andre (8/5): - 1st room was still dirty
- Robert (10/5): Nice weekend - Great location in quaint room.
- GEORGE (6/5): Lot of potential, needs some modernization. - GFM Hotel has a lot of potential considering its age. The front desk staff is very good. Our K-bedded room was furnished with antiquey pieces, some of which were much too big for the room, making it seem crowded. HVAC control was not typical, with no in-room instructions, so we had to ask front desk how it works. Bathroom was very clean, step-over tub/shower, linens were good. Breakfast was adequate, more like a typical mid-range chain hotel, not a "boutique" hotel. The restaurant which may be under independent management, is haphazard, trying too hard to be different.
- Nicky (10/5): - The owner's were wonderful! they provided me with local information that made my stay just that more enjoyable.
- Jennifer (8/5): - It was very quiet and comfortable.
- Tim (8/5): - .
- Jere (10/5): - The staff was super helpful and patient and kind. The hotel is beautiful and interesting and enjoyed staying in Downtown Marion where I met the proprietress of the Downtown Re-Sale Boutique and spent a lovely couple of hours visiting with her.
- Karen (10/5): Very pleased with this hotel - The staff is exceptional and the room and premises clean, as always!
- dcdoane (10/5): Good for a night - Room was nice, though small. We booked one night as we were traveling home. Bed was comfortable and bathroom was huge. Lots of room. We faced the street but there was very little noise. Disappointed in the breakfast. I don't drink coffee or tea but there was juice and hot chocolate. I had hot chocolate, but the water was not really hot enough. Ate at the Swampy Fox when we arrived. Food and service was excellent there.
- Dustin (10/5): - In the downtown, beutiful hostoruc hotel. Great breakfast
- Elizabeth (10/5): - It was wonderful except for all the steps that part was very hard on my husband
- Henry (10/5): - The property was conveniently located to the area I was needing to stay in.
- Milton (10/5): - Nice hotel in a small town quiet and convenient
- Victoria (6/5): - Breakfast was horrible. Jimmy Dean egg sausage croissant. Was just going to eat the egg and sausage to get some protein since no warm breakfast was being served. Microwaved it. But into the sausage and something hard got stuck between my teeth. Pulled it out and it was a piece of plastic. Grossed out so didn’t eat that. Made a waffle and it had a metallic taste. I was going backpacking for the weekend and was really looking for to a nutritious breakfast to start my day. Room was ok but no outlets for electronics to plug into and AC was noisy and blanket was very thin so I was cold and didn’t get much sleep. It definitely is an old hotel. Carpet was very old looking. Thank God I remembered my sandals.
- Annette (10/5): - Great historic hotel. Warm and welcoming staff. Clean, quiet, and comfortable rooms. Will be back.
- Laura (8/5): - Attendee an event that ran late. Nowhere in communication did it say you’d lose your room if you didn’t check in by a certain time. Luckily, we called ahead to notify them and our reservation was flagged, but then was told if we’d arrived 10 minutes later, our room would have been given away. Not sure who was looking for a room at 2 am that they would have given ours away. But it would have been nice to have known that.
- Wayne (10/5): - Very historical
- Stanislav (10/5): Good but not great. - Place was clean. Plumbing was perfect. Rooms don't live up to the pictures and were a bit smaller than expected. TVs are small and old.
- ETSUalum (6/5): Disappointed - This was our third stay at the hotel. It has been several years since we stayed. We definitely noticed a decline. The furniture is worn. The mattress was not firm and sank when you laid on it. The room thermostat is controlled by the front desk. We could not get our room cool enough, despite telling them we liked to sleep in a cold room. Apparently the housekeepers just hit the high spots when cleaning. The TV remote was so nasty looking, we didn't even touch it. The desk phone needed a good wipe down. The linens were nice. Bathroom was clean. The toilets are low to the floor. The continental breakfast was not worth our time. Very few selections and most of it frozen items you had to microwave. The location is great if you are attending a show at the Lincoln Theater. We will probably not return for another stay. The price is not worth it.
- Debra (10/5): - The only change i would have liked more was parking. We were on motorcycles and we were lucky to get the last parking space while there. However i do inderstamd the is no option to expand, so not the hotels fault.
Overall great stay. Loved the staff!
- Richard (10/5): - The AC controls could have been a bit easier to use. Other than that, this was a very enjoyable stay.
- Andrew (8/5): - AC was very noisy.
Front desk person always seemed to be on the computer or phone.
- cindygW229HD (2/5): - We have stayed in this hotel for our family reunion at Hungry Mother State Park every year for many years. We had a terrible experience this past visit the weekend of July 12th. We book two rooms one for my wife and I and a handicap room for my mother in law. Saturday morning the handicap elevator was not working and my 82 year old handicapped mother in law had to walk up and down the stairs which was very dangerous for her. She was able to do it but it was a challenge. The owner was there to try and help but there was nothing he could really do. He had a lame excuse for not having an elevator company with a technician on call to address the issue with the elevator. Be aware that if you cannot navigate many steep steps I do not recommend this hotel because we were told they had issues with this elevator in the past. The main elevator works fine but the retrofitted handicap elevator to get you to the main lobby level is a concern and you have to use it or navigate steep.
- Pamela (10/5): - The General Francis Marion has very beautiful guest rooms. The renovation maintained the historic feel,
- Jane (10/5): - It is amazing the grace that staff showed to a senior Citizen. I will sing their praises.
- Daniel (8/5): - Liked history. A little dated.
- Dawn (10/5): - No complaints with this hotel. The cleanliness was excellent and the staff is very friendly and helpful.
- Jerry (10/5): - The historical hotel cleanliness was excellent. The staff was friendly and very helpful.
- Tracey (10/5): - My room was very quiet. The staff was super helpful. The nostalgia of this old building was wonderful!!
- Cynthia (10/5): - My stay was very enjoyable. Loved the ambience and history. Nice town.
- Timothy (8/5): No USBs - Historic hotel was clean and comfortable, but a bit too historic. There were no USB outlets of any kind and few electrical outlets which limited the ability to charge various electronic devices.
- 978reneea (10/5): A real gem! - Love this old and well-restored historic hotel. Super nice sheets and bedding, very comfortable bed. Room and bath were very clean and all was quiet on the 5th floor.
- Karen (8/5): Not perfect this time - The staff was fantastic as aways. Only complaint was that the AC fan in my room was so loud that I couldn't sleep. Needed to stay 1 more night and asked for different room which was great
- Christin (10/5): - it has a fantastic location one minute walk to the Lincoln theater. Dinner options were quick and easy 3 to 4 restaurants within 10 steps of this hotel.
- Darlene (10/5): - You get a real key to the room
- Brian and Mary Jo (8/5): - Walking distance to the Lincoln Theater and restaurants.
- Robert (10/5): - Great old “grand” hotel. We loved the room, hotel, and staff. We had a good time at the bar. We ate Mcdoogles downtime and it was a fun time. Make sure you have a charger. No USB charging but that’s expected with the old hotel feel. Everything was clean and the room was good and cool. The bed was comfortable. We will definitely come back and stay in the fall. Motorcycle parking friendly too…
- Michelle (10/5): - Historic
- Matthew (10/5): - This was amazing old hotel with a ton of history. It is in walking distance to a ton of shops and restaurants and in close proximity to multiple state parks and recreational areas. The staff was extremely accommodating with any request I had. Also, with its close proximity to US81, it makes for a great place to stay. I would highly recommend this location for a stay. Cheers!
- Julia (6/5): Not handicap friendly - This is a beautiful old hotel, but it must be stated that this hotel is not handicap friendly hotel. If you have mobility issues i would not recommend staying here. The hotel sits on a street on an incline, but what's worse are the steps you're forced to climb to check in and get to your room. You literally have to lug your luggage up a flight of stairs. It was impossible for me. The front desk person serves as check in and bell hop. The beds and continental breakfast were underwhelming considering the room cost and high ratings. I personally would never stay here again.
- Greg (10/5): - It was a very well done historic hotel. Room were comfortable and included a continental breakfast and waffle machine. Conveniently in downtown Marion.
- Craig (10/5): - Historic hotel. Great location. Staff is friendly and professional
.
- Ed (6/5): - Old building 1927 was ok = Carpet in halls dirty and shows lots of wear. Mattress was not comfortable, need to modify back entrance with a covered easy access handicap ramp. Need to let people know when reviewing rooms about access.
- Jill (10/5): - We loved the vibe of this historic hotel and its Swamp Fox Bar. We loved the nearby niche places to eat - The Wooden Pickle, Macado’s (pronounced macka-doos), and Sister’s Cafe. We were only in town for the weekend, but will stay there again for more sight seeing, dining, etc.
- Melissa (10/5): - Updated historical hotel. Clean and cozy. Recommend it.
- Al (4/5): - Very old hotel, very old carpet and facility. Very poor breakfast. Our room door has a gap which you could see outside. It was a joke. Very very old facility. Noisy AC.
- Kelly (10/5): - Super nice staff, so friendly! Was in Marion for a graduation. One night we were leaving the hotel, it was pouring. I asked the front desk for an umbrella and the sweet lady at the desk found me one. Thank you!!
- Fernando (10/5): - Very helpful and friendly staff. Check in was easy, but we were initally assigned and given key to a room that had not been made up (used towles on bathroom floor and unmade bed). Hotel staff immediately gave us a diff room (1st was 2 beds, 2nd was queen and saved us $150). The new room was spotless, comfy bed and pillows, spacious. Hotel ataff gave recommendations for dinner and checked with us when we returned.
Selection of tea packets in front lobby.. one night, late, i retrieved a packet andnfilled cup with water (which had become cold) and staff immediately asked if they could make me hot water.
- Sonya (8/5): - The stay was pretty good. Place was comfortable. Cleaning service should clean under bed..... I dropped earring and had to look for it and it was apparent it not been cleaned under in while.
- Alan (8/5): - Almost 100 years old. Shows it. Staff friendly and helpful. By today’s standards, reasonable value.
- Juanita (10/5): - Lovely, clean historical hotel. I would definitely stay again.
- JoyDarrellCobb (10/5): - If you're looking for perfectly appointed, quiet & restful, this is it. A quick walk to dining & entertainment. Breakfast is basic and self serve but high quality. Everything is tidy and super clean but warm and welcoming. It's obvious that the friendly and helpful staff works hard to make sure all of the details are addressed. We will definitely stay here again!
- Paul (2/5): - Unfortunately, I never got to experience the property. I had an unexpected mechanical breakdown and was not able to make it to the hotel. The one star, as it is, does not represent the property. it is representative of my day.
- Charles (10/5): - We appreciate history and the importance of the General Francis Marion Hotel to the city of Marion. The restoration of the 1927 building was very well done and our room clean, spacious and comfortable, especially the bed was comfortable. The only negative was trying to figure out how to use the two remotes to watch the television. That was a minor issue.
- James (10/5): - Quaint and walking distance to restaurants and pubs
- John (8/5): - Great location in the center of small town. Free parking behind hotel. Bar two blocks away had good food and drink.
Only issue was the very slippery tub/shower. We never needed an accessible room before, but recommend it if you're not as agile as you once were.
- Pamela (8/5): - The room was wonderful, with a queen bed, microwave, fridge, Main St view, and large bathroom. Beautifully appointed room and common areas. Staff were nice, but they didn't give the warm and fuzzies or even present a business approach, so there are opportunities for improvement there, especially considering the cost, the attached restaurant, and the hotel's reputation. The free breakfast left a lot to be desired (a make-your-own wafflemaker, dry cereal x 2 kinds, coffee, bottled juice/milk, bagels separated into ziplock bags, individually prepackaged assorted muffins, yogurt, and gas station style microwaveable biscuits with meat). Parking was good, with the town's garage immediately adjacent. Security was also good, with multiple cameras monitored by the desk clerk and a keycard for entry after dark. We will absolutely come again, but next time we will go to Sur 81 for breakfast 😊.
- Madison (10/5): - wonderful
- Susan (10/5): Clean, quiet and easy. - On my trip to Marion, I met family members at a campsite at Hungry Mother State Park. It was lovely to be able to come to the General Francis Marion hotel in the evening to sleep. The hotel room was very clean, well-supplied and quiet. I loved the spacious bathroom and the big bed. As a single woman, I also appreciated the atmosphere of safety it provided. I loved the architecture and the history of the building, as it blended old new and features. I used to go to Marion as a child, so it was wonderful to see that this piece of Virginia history is still vibrant and active.
- angeliquerenee333 (10/5): The perfect blend of History and comfort. We loved our stay. - What a wonderful boutique hotel. We got a last minute deal on a room at this historic gem! You get off the highway and drive a little ways to get to a historic looking main type street. The hotel is beautiful! It is a top VA hotel and also a top National Geographic hotel. It is restored beautifully with tons of original historic details. The area seemed very safe. There is plenty of parking behind it for free and also a city pay parking garage right behind the free parking. Most of the parking out front is pay during the day and free at night. From the original stairways, original woodwork throughout, arches, original front desk, original but rewired lights, and more, the historic details will make you feel you are back in time. The marble flooring is beautiful. Don't miss the picture of the rooster in the marble, which secretly signified the establishment was not dry or no alcohol during the prohibition. The ballroom was breathtaking. The front desk clerk Indie (named after Bindie Irwin) was friendly, professional, engaging, and interesting. After you arrive, you can see why she loves working there, with the diverse and interesting group of travelers and locals she sees daily. I have pretty bad allergies and had not one sneeze or hint of allergy the whole time. Everything was clean, smelled good, and was dust free. I say that because I've stayed in multiple historic hotels over the years and they can tend to be full of dust and musty, with weird smells. Not this hotel, it was beautiful. The room had a microwave and frig, comfy bed, comfy pillows, and was beautiful also. The York Peppermint Patty chocolates and thank you notes were really great touches. Even the bathrooms were beautiful. You truly felt like a time traveler. Thankfully comfortable modern amenities were also included in the restoration. It was the perfect blend of history and comfort. Our room was really nice and cool in the heat. There was a nice elevator. The breakfast said continental but was far from simple. It provided a good and filling breakfast with lots of choices. The hotel was very clean. The service was excellent. The Swamp Fox Restaurant is attached and serves American fare plus food from simple to fancy daily. Prices were good and service was excellent. Check out the unique lighting in the front window if you go. They had a Cheers pub type bar table that was really cute. Drinks were wonderful. They served the usuals plus some interesting not to be missed local favorites. The staff were friendly and professional. We loved our stay. We definitely want to go back again. There are only 32 hotel rooms, it is considered a boutique hotel. Don't miss the upstairs outside hotel balcony where you can sit with drinks or coffee and look down at the street and out into the local area. It was very private but also very pretty. We have to go back! Great stay!
- Wendy (10/5): - Excellent hotel!!! Our 5th stay here and it never disappoints. Quiet clean rooms in a beautiful setting b
- Roswitha (6/5): - We canceled our stay , so have no review for it
- sharon (10/5): night at the - first time there and we loved it . history was amazing would have liked to stay longer .
- Susan (10/5): Yes to General Francis Marion! - I loved the history of this beautiful 1920’s building! It was well maintained and clean. The staff was friendly and helpful and the location downtown was lovely.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Historically beautiful and convenient - The hotel is in a super convenient location: restaurants, gift stores, and entertainment are all within walking distance. The employees were very professional and nice. They were all smiling which automatically sets a friendly tone. The rooms are decorated nicely. The room was odor free. I felt safe and the parking is free. I only had two things that weren’t quite 5-star in my opinion; the hot water came on the first night but the next morning, I stood at the foot of the shower for 4 minutes and it never got hot. It was barely lukewarm and I couldn’t take a shower. Luckily we were checking out that day so I knew I could take a shower once I got home. I’m assuming the plumbing is old since it’s a beautiful historic building. The only other thing I would change would be the bed. It was a spring mattress and it squeaked and was a little uncomfortable but that’s just me. You may like spring mattresses. I personally like a soft plush memory foam so that one is just personal preference and not necessarily a bad thing. The free breakfast was just fine: waffles, bagels, oatmeal, fruit, milk, orange juice and microwaveable sausage croissants. Plenty to eat.
- Keaten (10/5): - Very charming historic hotel. Definitely would recommend
- Denise (10/5): - Very impressed with lobby appearance and professional, friendly staff!
- Roy (10/5): - Everything
- Sandrine (10/5): - Lovely place
- Denise (8/5): - It's a classic Historic Hotel. The rooms are very well kept, clean with comfortable beds.
- William (8/5): - Worth a stay whilst in the area.
- kelli (8/5): - The room was clean but beds were small. We did enjoy our stay.
- Dennis (10/5): - Enjoyed the stay
- Michael (10/5): No cookie-cutter hotel, this one! - The General Francis Marion is a wonderful old hotel restored to its former glory. Right in the middle of downtown Marion, within walking distance of several restaurants and shops.
- Louis (10/5): - I had a very comfortable old time feel.
- Pamela (8/5): - Charming, comfortable, well taken care of,
- Michael (8/5): - Unique historic hotel right in the middle of town.
- Mike (10/5): - All good
- Paul (10/5): - good
- Kenneth (10/5): - Great ambience. Restaurant needs better awareness of customers.
- Stuart P (10/5): - Parking is tight behind the hotel- the parking places are narrow - should be widened. Breakfast is good - liked making my own waffles. Room 302 is a little tight. But hotel is thankfully very quiet. Bed takes up most of the room - no closet. There is a dark rubbery splotch ( gum?) in the carpet next to the bed. I stepped in it barefooted by mistake . It should be removed. Carpet looks worn and a little dirty - it should probably be replaced. The bottom of the tub/shower is clearly worn - it should rehabilitated or replaced ( looks shabby).
- Tammy (10/5): Beautiful historic hotel - Beautiful historic hotel in a cute town. Great location. Friendly staff.
- Bryan (10/5): - Beutifully restored historic property!
- Francesca (10/5): - Lovely historic property on a street with small shops and businesses. Pleasant public rooms
Bed was very comfortable and room facing Main Street was quiet. Secure parking behind the hotel. Would be happy to stay here again.
The breakfast bar was what you’d find at a chain hotel, so we ended up walking to a cute cafe down the street for a proper breakfast.
Should be noted that there are 5-7 steps to reach the front desk, where the elevator starts.
- Karen (10/5): Will definitely stay here again - Very comfortable beds, room was very clean, and the staff is fantastic!!
Highly recommend this Hotel.
- Brian (10/5): - Fabulous historic hotel that exceeded expectations!
