• Anne (10/5): - We knew in advance that the lovely room would be small. It would be helpful though if a small chair could be in the room (there was space) as a seating option or another surface to place items, if needed. That was the only drawback :-) for our 1 night stay.

The courtyard was lovely with a gas fireplace to enjoy. The room temp was kept cool as it was extremely hot outside. Breakfast was tasty and the staff were very friendly. I wished there was a bit of larger breakfast options like more yogurt or a waffle maker as I'm allergic to eggs and there were mostly egg options. The coffee wasn't strong but my husband liked it and I'm probably just picky with my coffee.

The hotel experience certainly felt very guest friendly and welcoming throughout our stay and the rooms are beautiful and well appointed. The complimentary small plates breakfast was superb. • matthewcX542RF (10/5): Quick Getaway was 👌 - The Gilded was a beautiful hotel with an vintage feel. The rooms were gorgeous with hardwood floors and antique furniture. The bed was super comfortable and the shower (though a bit small) was great for temperature and pressure. Katey was so warm and engaging when we arrived. She made sure to show us around and give us fresh hot homemade chocolate chip cookies! Though we were there for the off season (Black Friday) the hotel had some guests but Newport was still alive. We would definitely come back next year. Also parking is in the back of the building which was so great. We walked everywhere even though it was chilly because the nightlife was so close.

Convenient location and quiet comfort: The location was excellent. It was incredibly convenient, close to downtown access while still being quiet, and the proximity to the race start line was a major benefit. The bed was very comfortable. Helpful service: Bethany at the front desk was kind and helpful. We especially appreciated that she accommodated a late checkout request so we could shower after finishing the race. That flexibility made a big difference to our day. Practical touches: The place was made cozier by the B&B-style decoration, and we appreciated the generous supply of towels in the bathroom. While the property met our needs, we felt a few areas could be improved. The parking area was quite tight for the number of guests. Inside the room, the storage space was limited, and the bathroom was a bit small. Lastly, we found the pricing to be a bit high.

We originally booked this hotel for three nights at $1,300, expecting a boutique experience. The photos online are absolutely stunning, and the property itself has a lot of charm. However, the room we were given was tiny—barely 100 sq. ft.—and on the third floor up a very narrow staircase, which was challenging with luggage. The bathroom was so small that shower water spilled across the entire floor, and my husband, who is very tall, couldn’t move around comfortably. Honestly, if they had known his height, I don’t think they would have put us in that room. That said, when we brought our concerns to management, they handled it incredibly well. They refunded our full stay, minus half the cost of the first night, which we felt was very fair. Their customer service in resolving the situation was excellent. Bottom line: The hotel is lovely and beautifully photographed, but make sure to mention if you’re tall, bigger, or have trouble with stairs so they can place you in a more comfortable room.

So much so we couldn't sleep and needed to get up early and leave. No manger was not available to discuss matter that morning. I requested call back with no luck. Finally reached the manager a couple of weeks later and requested some type of credit. The answer I got was that I should have called for service in the middle of the night which would have cost us our entire night's sleep. She promised to look into the situation and a possible credit but never did follow up. Very disappointed after spending decent money for this room. I was left with the impression that management couldn't care less about out experience and inconvenience. We wouldn't stay here again.

• RebeccaRyanOrange (4/5): All that glitters is not gold - The website and marketing department for Lark Hotels touts Gilded as “one of the best hotels in Newport, RI.” I’ve been traveling to Newport for business and vacations (even our honeymoon) for almost 40 years and I disagree. At almost $500 per night on a weekday (even in season) Gilded does not offer anything special that merits the price or boast. We only stayed at Gilded because our trip to Newport was very last minute and all our regular hotels or B&Bs were booked. We wrongly assumed from the ratings and website that Gilded must offer some special luxuries to warrant the price. We were wrong. What is listed as boutique hotel (2 stars as it turns out) is actually two c. 1880’s mansard-roofed houses connected by a narrow corridor that serves as the breakfast area and walkway. The tables are small patio-type iron tables and metal chairs pushed up against the sides of the corridor. The were not dressed up with pillows and flowers as shown on the website—they were just hard backed chairs. The breakfast was just all right—nothing that stayed hot—mostly carbs. The entrance to Gilded is up a flight of narrow wooden stairs at a back door with a narrow landing that barely holds one person, a carry-on, and a metal screen door—hardly a $500 per night welcome. There is also no elevator so you have to carry your suitcases up at least one steep flight of stairs or two if you are on the third floor—not to mention the entrance stairs. There is also no public bathroom so you have to wait until your room is ready. How does Gilded qualify as a hotel? Gilded is also on a small back street with a few dilapidated houses and overgrown lots—nothing that connotes Newport—on the contrary—no harbor, no boats, no shops, or anything vaguely special. Granted it is located only a few blocks from Bellevue Avenue and the Viking Hotel, but guests will not experience Newport as it should be in this establishment. The photos on its website highlight the public areas that are indeed colorful and evocative of a bygone Victorian era, but the rooms—not so much. The color-enhanced photos feature mostly headboards and vignettes that do not tell the whole story. We were in one of the few larger rooms but the only furniture was a black dresser (the furniture is the same in all the rooms), two uncomfortable chairs and a tiny, 12” diameter table. No table for a computer or the other sundries a traveler might need to be comfortable. We had to use a chair as a flat surface. The nightstands were made of “gilded” metal and glass with large lamps (as they are in all rooms) that left little room for books, glasses, phones, etc. The bathroom sink had no counter space. There was no coffee maker, no desk staff after 8:00 pm, no bar for a drink or place to eat after breakfast. The worst part for us was our room smelled of mold—an earthy musty smell like a basement, which was very odd as we were on the second floor. We thought if we opened the windows it would dissipate, but it didn’t. When we searched the room to find out where the smell was coming from we discovered a container that had been shoved beneath our bed that said: “Eliminates Odors and Freshens the Air.” The smell got worse as the night progressed. I was up most of the night sitting by a window to get free air. The next morning when I told a staff member she said: “This is an old house; we have those containers in all our rooms.” So they know. How Gilded has such high rating is lost on me. Maybe those guests are first timers to Newport with nothing to serve as a comparison or they have very deep pockets. Choose wisely—Newport is one of my favorite places in the world. There are many lovely places to stay, but don’t be like us and make reservations the same day. Book way ahead and look beyond the pretty photos and even prettier words featured on Gilded’s website.

Location close to downtown little walk but hotel is quite away from night club or bar. Breakfast is very good. Healthy meal and good quality of food. Parking lot is in the compound, no street parking. Staff so friendly and polite. Hotel feel like home and family. I really recommend, you won’t be regret.

The shower was enormous. Breakfast was a super spread with lots of fresh fruit. It ran from 8 to 10. My suggestion is to make it an hour longer. The dining room had good amounts of light but needs more comfortable chairs. The location is perfect: quiet but only a few blocks from Bellevue. Parking is also included which is an important amenity since parking in Newport is expensive. Highly recommended!

It's in a great location and walkable to the wharf and many restaurants/shopping. The decor is gorgeous and our room was large and well appointed with all the toiletries (that smell amazing). The staff was gracious and helpful. The breakfast spread was such a lovely surprise and the perfect way to start the day in Newport. Would love to return to this hotel and highly recommend it to other travelers.

• Richard (8/5): Perfect for a 2 night stay in Newport - Gilded is great! - This Guest House (bed and breakfast) was perfect for our 2 night stay in Newport. In a quiet residential street it is just a short 10 min stroll down the hill to the quaysides and the action of town. We received a warm welcome and our room was very comfortable. It is decorated in bold colours which have it character. The breakfast was decent and there was a communal tea and coffee station for use at all hours. Very good! No complaints

• zlatathoughts (10/5): - We absolutely loved our stay at Gilded! We had to switch our hotel last minute and this was one of the few available. I knew nothing about the area and didn't know what to expect from a Bed and Breakfast over a hotel. Gilded did NOT disappoint. First of all, the room itself was very spacious, comfortable, and was nicely designed. The personal touches of the staff is second to none. They left us a sweet note, an anniversary gift, and baked goods upon our arrival. They checked in daily via texts to make sure our needs were met. Their breakfast, which is included, is all handmade and delicious. They leave out snacks and HOMEMADE CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIES during the daytime, too. Regarding location: it is off the beaten path and away from the downtown hustle and bustle. We came to REALLY enjoy that because we'd walk to every activity and then get to walk back "home" away from it all. We would 100% stay here again!! Highly recommend!!

• Lee (10/5): Perfect boutique hotel for a special, comfortable and affordable stay - Gilded is a wonderful boutique hotel, recommended to me by a friend and it exceeded my expectations. The staff are lovely, rooms are beautifully decorated, bathroom products are lovely with natural ingredients, breakfast is healthy with GF/DF options, fresh berries and there are cookies in the afternoon, with tea and coffee always available. The location is easy walking distance to the water but also to the free trolley bus stops. A lovely getaway and they were very accommodating. Nothing, would happily stay again and recommend to others.
