Guest Reviews
- Rakesh (9/5): -
- Tiara (10/5): A perfect, relaxing getaway with great comfort and beautiful pools. - I had an amazing stay at Thaproban Pavilion Resort and Spa. The rooms were very comfortable and well-maintained, and the pools were absolutely lovely—perfect for relaxing. The overall atmosphere made it feel like a peaceful and luxurious getaway. Honestly, there wasn’t much to dislike during my short stay. Everything met my expectations and made for a very enjoyable experience.
- Tiara (10/5): -
- Manjula (6/5): Friendly staff , old school facilities . - Location Wash rooms

- Michael (3/5): Nice enough staff, but the food, gym and kids play room need immediately 'health and safety' work. - The location is nice. Close enough but far enough. Health hazards exist. We all got gastro from reheated buffet food. The gym and kids play room is mouldy and needs fixing urgently.
- Kevin (1/5): Avoid at all costs. Mold, cockroaches, terrible WiFi, food is poor, beers are warm. - The staff were friendly. That’s it. The mold, the cockraoches, the terrible WiFi, the warm beverages, average food.
The took upfront payment. Wouldnt refund. We left anyway, this is a health risk of a hotel, never mind just a terrible experience.

- Roelof (8/5): Pleasant, calm stay in a hotel with very friendly staff and a nice breakfast. - Nice breakfast and big room, which was quiet and clean. The location was a bit out of the way, but within walking distance to restaurants, bars/coffee shops, shops and Unawatuna beach. Staff were very friendly and helpful. The hotel could do with some maintenance, like some painting of the outer walls and fixing some of the wood. It was a pity the room didn't have much natural light nor a balcony, but I didn't spend much time in the room anyway, so was ok. While the breakfast was nice, some more fresh juice would have made it even nicer, especially since Sri Lanka has plenty of nice fruits.
- Ágnes (10/5): Absolutely amazing!!! - The location, the colors, the vibe, everything was amazing! We really liked our room - so so beautiful! - the breakfast was lovely too and they have a solo guitar player who is such a nice memory to us! Probably the nicest hotel I have been to with great staff too! They have a buggy that brings you to the beach that wasn’t working at that time when we were there, but some of the days they still managed to drop us off by car. Its a short 5-10min walk anyway.
- Ella (8/5): - A really lovely property in Unawatuna. We booked the two bedroom and it was palatial and very artfully decorated. Loved the vibe and decor. Pools were lovely and the views incredible The door seemed quite easy to force open without a key, the dinner option was not worth the money (buffet was so/so at best) and the children's play area was in desperate need of a remodel - just seemed very tired.
- Rashad (5/5): - Did not like
- Daria (5/5): - View of the water from the pool. Friendly, smiling staff. Good room cleaning. The price doesn't match the quality. The hotel is very outdated and dilapidated. The facade is off-putting. The wood by the pool needs refinishing. The rooms are noisy from the external air conditioning units. The pool table is falling apart, and the gym is weak and dirty.
- Alina (10/5): -
- Lakmali (9/5): Overall pleasant .Not value for money .Its not resort style accomadation as advertised - The staff was welcoming , very friendly and hard working souls .
Amazing staff vibe ,view .
Property located at the private street with best view and perfect hideaway spot for a vacation . Food wasnt great , not much option and cold during breakfast buffet .
Unable to provide an quite room .located a room right next to the reception and constantly distrupted by the noice and inhouse guest traffic
- Chervon X S (9/5): -
- Lucy (7/5): A lovely hotel, with lovely staff could do with a little maintenance. - Spacious rooms, lovely pools, fantastic waiters, most of the staff were very helpful The drains kick up in our room and around the pool area. A little tired could do with some maintenance around the pool area and the gym .
- Claes (8/5): Nice good hotel but overpriced -
- Claes (8/5): Nice good hotel but overpriced -
- Sarah (9/5): Lovely location, friendly staff, great pools. - Lovely location on the ocean, only a few minutes walk to restaurants and swimming beach. Loved being able to use beach chairs at Thaproban Beach Club (and free buggy ride there and back). Rooms were very nice, pools were great and restaurant provided great buffet breakfast. BBQ seafood buffet one night was nice too. Very friendly staff. We were in 2 bedroom family suite, so no view which was expected. But also no windows at all (only small ones in bathrooms). Not a big problem but good to be aware of. Also, I only knew about the beach club and shuttle from reading reviews, the hotel never mentioned it to us, I just knew to ask.
- Mandal . (7/5): -
- Adeeb (4/5): Avoid long stays - good for one or two night stay without kids - The staff were all very nice and dedicatied. Dilshan our room manager was very kind and made sure the room was cleaned etc. The staff who are hard working and kind people with a smile is what was the best thing about this resort. 4 out of 5 of our group fell ill during our stay. We ate mostly at the resort and at times food hygiene and preparation was very poor. The pool lacked chlorine and the smell of the sewage was very strong. They really need to upgrade their facilities and hygiene management of the kitchen. The breakfast was alright but the food was let out for long period of time without proper storage. The kids club room was very disappointing and it was very dirty. Not suitable for children and the rooms also have access limitations.
- Ben (9/5): - Staff were very attentive and the hotel was lovely No plant based milk at breakfast was very disappointing.
- Anne Kirstine (5/5): -
- Liv (4/5): -

- skipper-com (8/5): Internet is MUST for every room in every hotel - Very clean and spacious rooms. Facilities are enough, but sometimes I needed more coffee and asks bottles of water once. Towels are clean and dry (as dry as would be in that climate zone).
Everything is fine with fans, air conditioning and safe box.
Very nice view of sunset and ocean. It couldn't be better.
Breakfast is ok. There are dishes of European food and local food. Sometimes I'd like a little bit more variety but it's ok for a week. Coffee is local (be ready for local coffee everywhere) with traditional taste or sub-taste. But it's not bad, many places offer much worse for money. Internet access! There is practically no possibility to get Internet connection in our room. Neither Wi-Fi, nor Mobile. Internet works everywhere (in lobby, in gym, beside and inside pools), any other place except our room. Because we hadn't access point in our room, but walls blocked all wi-fi and 4g signal. In result, I have to work from lobby and gym.
I asked staff three times to fix it. Once technician guy brings 4g mobile to wi-fi AP, but it didn't work too (as expected). Every time staff said that everything now is ok, but it never was.
- Anton (3/5): Definitely isn’t worth the money, I wouldn’t stay again here, even for free. - There are good things (pool, view, breakfast, the place is quiet) but I don’t care anymore, because the shitty aspects are overwhelming. Rarely write reviews but it is that time.
On the surface it looks like a decent hotel but don’t be deceived. A myriad of annoying / unpleasant details are giving it away. Bunch of things are rusty in the room (doorlock, hangers, taps). Bed sheets are dirty and worn out. Hot water may or may not come from the shower. The wifi is horrendous (you need to intentionally design it to be that bad). The room is poorly ventilated. After a rain you stand in a puddle while opening a door which is too narrow even for a slim person and first resists you to open and then doesn’t want to close.
The service: they are good people and try to be nice but often too much and it’s so annoying. They try to micromanage for you a bunch of things they shouldn’t: from whether you should use keyring (!) to the temperature you set AC to. It’s cringe how they watch you constantly while eating to immediately get the plates away without any need. There are always 3-4 people to address any simple reqeuest, even though I’d prefer to talk to a single person who can do the job properly.
- :-) (9/5): -
- Thomas (7/5): - Nice room, sea view, nice balcony, good pool area, sports bar area, gym, happy hour, nice cocktails, close to restaurants and shops Outside light turned off due to sea mist/rain?, balcony itself was soaking during rain, corridor and other areas need updating (old signs, broken things, paint coming off), main pool closed for maintenance, broken balcony door handle
- BERQUIN SHYAMEN (10/5): -
- Chinthana (10/5): - Clean, spacious and comfortable rooms. Great pool with view over waves breaking on the rocks. Amazing sunsets. Attentive staff. Kids loved the pool and the games room. Only a 5 min walk down to the beach. Would come again.
- Grazyna (9/5): Nice stay and relax! - View on the ocean is great, super nice and helpful staff, swimming pools, close to the center but still aside and very calm. Rooms are nice but in some of them there is only the roof window and is was a bit dark. I was missing the regular windows in the room. The hotel is very nice but probably needs some mantaiance.
- daniel (10/5): EXCEPCIONAL ! Increíble - Our stay at this hotel was simply unforgettable. From the very first moment, they made us feel at home with their warm and genuine hospitality.
We would especially like to mention Ghian, the reception manager, who took care of us as if we were part of his family. His dedication and kindness truly made a difference in our experience. A big thank you also to the restaurant team, always attentive and smiling, and especially to Lajiru, who was absolutely outstanding in his service and friendliness.
The hotel itself is amazing: well-kept facilities, a relaxing atmosphere, and a level of service that goes far beyond expectations.
We highly recommend this place and hope to come back one day. Thank you for making our trip to Sri Lanka so special!
- Sarti (9/5): -
- channa (9/5): Excellent enjoyed our stay - Lovely room, friendly staff, good location
- Wojciech (8/5): Miły pobyt . Pomocny personel . Piękny widok - Lokalizacja
- P-R 7427 (10/5): - We stayed there for 3 nights. The hotel is definitely recommendable. Nice and helpful staff, clean room, and delicious breakfast with a lot of variety including Sri Lanka traditional one. Daul curry and coconut rotti were our favourites. Location is nicely quiet because it was far enough from the beach area. Our flight was late evening so the staff offered us to stay there also after check out. We could take a shower even though we already checked out.
Most remarkably, they have an amazing spa on the top floor with highly skilled therapists. We enjoyed the oil massage 2 times in our stay. It was best in my life, thank you!
- rajan (4/5): - The check-in for this property is very problematic. Note that their credit card reader doesn’t always work. And they are very lucky if you try to pay with cash about the condition of your bills. The slightest crease on a bill and they won’t take it. This makes paying for the property difficult and a completely unnecessary headache.
- Aarthi (3/5): Decent stay but an outdated hotel - Staff were very friendly and welcoming The wooden floors were always wet inside the room which made the stay unbearable.
- Chloe (9/5): Perfect beach stay with easy access to all facilities/local sights - Amazing room and view, you can walk straight out of your door and into saltwater pool; spacious and beautifully kept. Clean facilities and additional services available including laundry and spa. Perfect location to access local beaches, tulips tusk, restaurants and shops. Friendly and helpful staff.
Freshly cooked omelettes to order for breakfast. Breakfast food (Sri Lankan) was always cold. Didn’t eat Western breakfasts so can’t comment
- Ellen (6/5): - Personeel is heel vriendelijk, kamer ruim
- John (8/5): Great first stop in our trip and would recommend for families. - We loved the pools and the amazing views of the sea. It was only a short walk into town and there was a good selection of food at breakfast, including freshly made omelettes, fruit and Sri Lankan dishes. The staff were lovely too. The family room was spacious with two bathrooms and very comfy beds! The decking around the pool needs attention, as you could hurt your feet on some parts. Not many sunbeds available if the hotel was to get busy.
- Jasvinder (10/5): Fantastic stay as always will definately be back again! - This is our third visit and it didn’t disappoint, clean, friendly, great location, comfy beds. Staff remembered us from our last visit, nothing was a problem. We love staying here!
- Vinay (10/5): Amazing sea view. Fantastic property. - Perfect location by the sea. Its a bit inside but quite closer to the sea. They have two beautiful pools that are a must try. The views from the rooms is full sea view and fantastic. The waves do make noise when you sleep just in case you are a sound sleeper. Breakfast is good but can be better. The breads section can be better and fresh.
- Clare (9/5): Lovely hotel, friendly staff, great setting - Lovely hotel. We stayed in a 2 bedroom apartment, which was the size of a small house! 2 double bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, 2 seating areas and a roof terrace. Dilshan cleaned the place immaculately and even decorated the bed on my husband's birthday. We loved the spacious apartment, the pool with views over the sea and the friendly staff. The breakfast buffet was nice.
The hotel location is walkable to the main street and beach in Unawatuna, but far enough away to be peaceful and quiet. There are plenty of friendly tuk tuk drivers who will drive you anywhere you don't fancy walking. It's definitely worth visiting the nearby turtle beach where you can feed and swim with giant turtles. Costs about 1000 LKR (3€) to get a tuk tuk there and back, was the highlight of our stay in Unawatuna. There was nothing we didn't like. It was a shame that the second pool was closed, but this was explained to us on arrival. The WiFi worked well but kept dropping (connected, can't provide internet), although it could have been an issue with our devices.
- Jignesh (8/5): Very good -
- Gurvinder (8/5): Comfortable and enjoyable. - Ms. Subhasini, Front Desk Manager was extremely helpful and accommodating. She briefed us about the place and surrounding places of interest very well. An asset to the Resort.
- Magdalena (9/5): Nice hotel, good stay :) - Beatiful view from balcony, nice swimming pools and very good breakfast. The sound of waves is amazing! The toilet needs to be renovated, as room is very beautiful in Bali style - the toilet was as at the poor hotel :/
- Krish (8/5): A Serene Escape: The Perfect Retreat from Daily Life - This is a wonderful retreat that offers the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life. The location is serene and tranquil, providing a much-needed break. The rooms are beautifully appointed and extremely comfortable, making it easy to relax. The staff were friendly and attentive, ensuring a pleasant stay. The food selection is decent, but the taste could definitely be improved. The bakery items could be fresher as well. Additionally, the parking situation is terrible, and the Wi-Fi coverage is quite poor. Overall, there’s potential for a better experience if these issues were addressed.
- Nicki (10/5): Exceptional - Everyone was so friendly and helpful. The spa was beautiful. Housekeeping was amazing.
- Joe (10/5): Exceptional - Lovely stay with great helpful staff. There is no longer a shuttle to the beach property but a pleasant easy walk
- Kabir (6/5): Would stay here only if all other good properties were sold out, or didnt have sea facing rooms left. - Hotel is decent, we were miss informed about both the pools being saltwater (was told main pool was freshwater, and second pool was saltwater). Manager had the audacity to laugh at my face when I mentioned how both could be saltwater.
No lift for the 2nd floor on one side of the property.
Other staff were very polite and accommodating, but the point of both pools being salt water ruined the entire experience for us. Would not come back here as overall it was not worth my time and money.
Food in breakfast also smelled funny, and was often left cold towards the end of the timing.
Plus points like great view and proximity to the beach, along with a nice sports room.
- Mahesh (9/5): Superb -
- Anne (8/5): Nice hotel by the ocean - Large rooms, everything was clean, comfortable beds, good breakfast and good food at the restaurant, friendly and helpful staff. Even though there aren't much space for sun beds, we manage to find beds when ever we needed them, nice and not crowded pools. Short walk (about 7 - 8 min.) to the nearest beach. Lots of restaurants and shops nearby within short walking distance, easy also to get a tuk-tuk. Peaceful place away from the Unawatuna's hustle and bustle. Nice to listen to the ocean and see the waves hit the rocks at the shore. The hotel is bit worn, and room prices are still quite high. We had for example lots of stains in our sofa, one of the wardrobes door couldn't open properly, fridge's shelf was broken, fuse went off several times when we wanted to intensify air conditioning at the second floor bed room. The staff tried to fix the fuse problem, but it still kept going off randomly. We then just lifted the fuse switch up again by ourselves. There wasn't a sink or any shelfs at the first floors bathroom (toilet + shower), instead the sink was next to the bathroom glass wall on the bedroom's side. There aren't any hand towels, but this seems to be a sort of standard in Sri Lankan hotels. Based on previous reviews, we knew that there wasn't much windows in this type of room, and it wasn't a problem for us. There was a nice balcony at the third floor facing the hotel roof and sea, but there wasn't anything to hang e.g. your wet swim wear or towels. We had our own clothesline with us.
- Emily (10/5): Exceptional -
- Steve (8/5): Very good - Excellent staff, very helpful. Good value Shower was often too cold.
- Devendra (9/5): Superb -
- Kerry (5/5): Passable - They took my payment twice from two different cards. I’m trying to resolve this with them atm
- Amelia (9/5): Absolutely brilliant. The staff should be so proud of their services. - Spacious rooms, really clean and lovely. Plenty of space for baby to crawl around.
The staff were absolutely amazing. So so friendly and welcoming to us all.
Helpful at the front desk and supportive when our son was ill.
Beautiful salt water pool.
Brilliant breakfast. Jacuzzi in room didn’t work but we didn’t mind.
- Nalaka (2/5): Very poor - Entrance , Parking, Beach area, very poor planning
this place is very congested. no space at all. feeling very tight
- Lavanga (9/5): Superb - Rooms were spacious. Food was great. Friendly staff Road is narrow & traffic is high
- Mithun (5/5): Excellent Location but property is very run down and needs a makeover - The Location was excellent Staff was not professional and did not come to address certain issues with our room despite constantly reminding them. They also did not accept certain requests by us which other hotels usually do.
- Tejas (5/5): Passable - Only location
- Olga (10/5): Exceptional -
- Nanayakkara (9/5): Superb - The room and the room facilities Nothing
- Nikita (10/5): Absolutely lovely stay with the most beautiful view 😍 - Excellent hospitality, amazing food, perfect vibe. There are 2 pools in the resort which are very clean. This was the first time I experienced a sea water pool and I absolutely loved it. We got room no. 102 and what a beautiful view it had. The balcony opened to a beautiful view of the pool followed by the sea. Also, you can walk by to a small beachy setup which the resort has made which is lovely. We absolutely loved our stay in Thaproban and would surely return back on our next trip to Srilanka.
- Thilakshi (8/5): Very good - Please stay. Rooms clean. Staff very friendly. The hotel is dog friendly. That's is most important thing. Food ok. Nothing
- Samuel (9/5): Superb -
- Rick (8/5): excellent staff and breakfast. exercise bike badly in need of repair - friendly helpful staff
clean swimming pool
large rooms
breakfast was excellent exercise bike in need of many repairs, its almost unusable
masseuse massaged feet unprotected then massaged head
small pool was closed 4 days for cleaning
checkin time was about 15 minutes
Security box was not bolted to the wardrobe and could be easily carried away
- Charles (7/5): Good hotel in Unawatuna - don't expect western 5 Star - Breakfast was really good, great selection of Sri Lankan and Western options. The location is good, short walk to the beach and several good restaurants. The hotel could do with some maintenance especially to the outdoor areas, pool surrounds.
Although there are loads of staff working at the hotel they are not paying attention to things like providing pool towels are asking guests if they would like to order a drink, etc.
- Matt (6/5): Pleasant -
- Laleema (9/5): A lovely stay - The location and facilities are lovely. But really it is the staff and the service that made this such a comfortable stay. The property struggles a little when the rains come in full force, but the welcoming nature and willingness to help of the staff makes it a comfortable and lovely stay. The rooms are generously sized and clean.
- Maximilian (7/5): Good -
- Gamage (6/5): Pleasant -
- Kevin (8/5): Nice resort, good food, not as kids-minded as photos suggest - Good restaurant with nice staff. Great pools with fantastic views. Very spacious accommodation. I expected more from the front desk; wifi-problems in the room took quite long to be resolved and they were not able to facilitate transport beyond their own vehicles. Not a really big deal.
Don’t book this for the kids play room; it was terrible; poor lighting and dead cockroaches; had to ask twice to remove them. That was a bigger deal for me.
- Thiagarajan (9/5): Superb -
- Gregor (7/5): Good - Very clean and staff were lovely Initial room was completely flooded Flooring was damp and water coming through floor .replacement room which wasn't same size or view was adequate .Aircon didn't work sometimes and needed maintaince no means of adjusting Aircon with regards fan . Hotel was tired in appearance .needs upgrading .staff were lovely and very clean
- Franklin (8/5): We booked 2 rooms both with ocean view, polite and professional staff, however we had few issues with room facilities. - Really nice location with ocean view from the balcony and pool Floor was constantly wet and A/C didn’t work
- Holger (8/5): A nice place after all, with some room for improvement. - The hotel layout and design is quite lovely. The family room was in fact a small 2-floor townhouse with a nice rooftop terrace. The seaside is spectacular - a natural array of rocks where waves can crash several meters high depending on the tide and weather. Staff have been very helpful and always super friendly. Breakfast buffet was excellent with many healthy choices. Beautiful pool areas and lots of nice corners to chill. Extra tour arrangements and day trips are not bad, but overpriced and average value for money. Instead, book with some reliable agent in the village or over in Galle to get better deals without subcontractors, endless excuses for non- performance, or completely unnecessary detours to ‘herbal gardens’ or other ripoff schemes.
Location is a bit tricky - at the end of a dead end road just outside Unawatuna. We were once stuck for a few hours after heavy downpour and flash floods covering the only village road out.
Hotel-run massage services are eagerly sold, but overpriced and poor value for money - no real professionals,
If you’re stopping over in the area, it’s a nice choice. But for a more up-market, less tourist trappy village atmosphere nearby, better stay in Galle to enjoy a very nice fortress town, excellent food, cafés, cool shops and lots of nice little hidden corners.
- Raveen (7/5): Good - 1. Excellent location near shops and restaurants.
2. Very kind and helpful staff.
3. The hotel offers two pools—one saltwater and one natural—which is great.
4. Large room with a comfortable bed. 1. The hotel uses physical keys, which is a security concern as they can be easily copied.
2. Hot water barely comes through in the shower.
3. The Wi-Fi doesn’t reach the rooms on the third floor.
4. The area around the hotel is too dark at night, which can be scary, especially with dogs barking.
5. The safe box wasn’t working properly; you need to enter the code multiple times to get it to work.
6. No elevator available.
7. The breakfast was average.
8. Pets seem to be allowed, which resulted in dogs barking at midnight and early morning.
9. The towels were dirty.
- Reehana (10/5): Exceptional -
- Reehana (10/5): Exceptional -
- Yoganathan (10/5): We loved it! - We loved the friendly staff who connected with us ( Mahesh, Tharange, Laheroo and Sumitre) and made our stay even nicer. The sound of nature like the crashing waves against the rock by the salt water pool was just stunning. The view from the infinity pool was breathtaking. We also enjoyed the evening performances during dinner time. The family room we stayed in was spacious, bright and very clean. My kids can't stop talking about their great experience at this resort - a family friendly resort. -
- Van (5/5): Nice area - Thaproban Pavillion has beautiful sea views and is very close to a lively village with nice restaurants and shops.
Close to nice beaches and many interesting activities nearby, we did whalewatching, turtle beach and playing Golf at Catalina Military Airport and a visit to Galle where definitly hightlights of our holiday.
Apart from issues with the shower and the wifi see below the resort has nicely decorated rooms and two nice pools. Our rooms 115 / 116 / 117 had poor views and were located in the back. We had NO HOT (or even warm) water in the showers and NO WIFI in the rooms, we made complaints for 2 days in a row and only after escalatiing to the manager they took action but could not resolve the issues. The manager offered a room change but as we onl had few nights to go that was too much of a hassle.
Poor price quality and a lot of legacy maintenance to get this resort back up and running.
- Davina (8/5): Very good - Rooms were lovely spacious, beds very comfy, air con effective, pools were great lots of seating areas and clean.
Restaurant staff friendly and chatty.
Shuttle to the beach house was excellent though not consistent, to get closer to the beach and use sunbeds there included but limited amount or to walk around the area to browse in the shops.
Breakfast was very good though repetitive but lots of choices
Sports hall with gym and pool and foosball for kids was great addition. And free to use. Arrived at check in time but room wasn’t ready till and hour and half later, though could use facilities but everything inside cases, Quiet in evenings, only one night had a show and dinner which was lovely. £11pp not including drinks Some ambiance in the evenings to keep guests in hotel would be good.
We ended up eating out in evenings locally with live music.
