Guest Reviews
- Ute (9/5): Beautiful, charming and wonderful staff ☺️ - The gardens were well kept, charming accommodation and felt welcomed. We loved the tour around the estate. Sadly the pool wasn’t quite inviting despite the efforts of the staff to getting it clear looking. We were excited for the pool but unfortunately it wasn’t what we expected.
- Urs (10/5): Ein mangischer Ort in einer friedlichen, üppig grünen Umgebung. Tolle Wanderung, sehr feines Essen. Ausgezeichnete und h -
- Alison (10/5): A wonderful and unforgettable stay - Beautiful old tea estate bungalow with amazing views from the wonderful garden and pool A very warm welcome. Delicious meals. Fantastic surroundings - seemingly every spice in our cupboard growing nearby. Not an issue with the property but awareness we used Uber to get around and some drivers reluctant to travel what they considered to be off the beaten track.
- Sandra (10/5): - Altes Tea Estate, etwas in die Jahre gekommen. Aber sehr gepflegt. Sehr freundliche Mitarbeiter 50 $ für eine Wanderung ist vollkommen überzogen
- Daniel K (10/5): Beautiful historical property in knuckles - excellent stay - Wonderful historical small hotel from 1860s staffed with wonderful friendly staff. Beautiful garden with pool and views. Excellent food. We loved our large room with high ceilings w/ceiling fan (no A/C - but cool with windows open and mosquito net). Wish we could have stayed longer than 2 nights as the hiking in area was wonderful. Nothing
- Justinas (8/5): The nature was amazing - I liked the whole concept - renewed Tea estate bungalow in jungles, all the interior matched the concept. Surrounding nature - stunning. The house territory is exceptionally clean and well maintained. The staff - helpful and polite. Breakfast - extremely generous, delicious. In the room which we stayed in - the shower cabin does not close properly, the seals are leaking, but the biggest disappoint - the toilet flush tank is not working and required to be manually operated.
- Adrian (10/5): A characterful haven in a beautiful setting. Very hospitable! - Strathisla is a real characterful haven in an absolutely beautiful setting in an amazing country!
We loved our stay - only a pity our 2 days at the Tea Estate was too short!
We had a really enjoyable and informative orientation walk in the local community with Jako (co-owner / manager) as well as another longer trek to One Tree Hill with Prasad the property’s very knowledgeable guide (recommend!)
Great service and friendly hospitality all round - with a particular call-out for Moorthy!
All our meals were delicious
We hope to return! Nothing to report - lovely stay
- Danny (10/5): -
- Sinead (10/5): An exceptional place to stay - Everything about this place is exceptional. The house is absolutely beautiful, with a lovely terrace to sit out on and our room was lovely. It is in an amazing location with beautiful views of and a gorgeous swimming pool and garden. The manager and staff couldn't have been nicer, especially Moorthy, and the food was truly delicious. One of the nicest places I have stayed. There is nothing not to like.
- Pascale (10/5): Exceptionnel - Tout!
- Ruchira (9/5): A lovely place where modern hospitality meets colonial charm. Thank you for a lovely weekend! - The Bungalow is situated within a former tea estate and is a place where the modern hospitality meets the colonial charm. The staff is super friendly and is very attentive to the needs of the guests. They are very knowledgeable about the surrounding areas and will provide information about the tourist sites around the area. Wifi is available and the room that we stayed in was very spacious. The pillows were not very comfortable and the road to the Bungalow could use an upgrade.
- Pascal (9/5): Beautiful retreat - Beautiful estate in the middle of nature. The room was very spacious and comfortable. The views from the garden were beautiful. The staff was fantastic and the food delicious. -
- Sam (10/5): Charming stay in an unbelievably beautiful location and run by fantastic, caring staff. - This is a truly magical place. It is in the most beautiful, secluded setting with stunning views across the valley. We were at Strathisla for 3 nights and 4 days and it was well and truly worth it. While we were using it as a base to explore nearby Kandy and Sigiriya, we could easily have just hung out at Strathisla for its truly peaceful environment and amazing service. Morthy and Jaku looked after us so beautifully and arranged trips and a driver for us, with Jaku taking us on a walk around the village and sharing his knowledge about the local flora and fauna we saw. The food was absolutely incredible: each night we had at least 5 different curries and dishes freshly cooked by the excellent chef. I might actually say it was the best food we had in Sri Lanka. For some old school charm, incredible views and wonderful people, Strathisla is perfect. It is not a modern house so please don’t expect all the latest tech or facilities like air con, but this is what made it so epic.
- Simon (10/5): Fabulous place to unwind and relax - This is a beautiful place set in a tranquil setting, perfect for a few days to unwind. The staff are very friendly and welcoming, the local food excellent. We highly recommend staying at Strathisla
- Stephanie (10/5): The essence of tranquility! - A lovely heritage property with an old world feel in a tranquil rural setting. Beautiful gardens and amazing views - the sky at sunset was spectacular. Wonderful staff and delicious Sri Lankan food. The perfect place to chill out.
- Steve (10/5): Exceptional - A wonderful place to spend time in a peaceful location close to nature and natural beauty. The staff were fantastic and provided plenty of support and guidance, helping us to enjoy senic walks in the area. The breakfasts and evening meals were truly amazing and exceeded our expectations... Nothing... everything was perfect....
- Caroline (10/5): Exceptional - Beautiful old colonial house in an amazing setting, but what was so special was the warmth of the staff.
The food was some of the best I had in Sri Lanka.
It's a pity that I live on the other side of the world....otherwise we would be frequent visitors at this hotel.
- Tara (10/5): Really idyllic place. Loved it. Family friendly - Beautiful. Amazing pool. Staff and owner were excellent. Food amazing. Really wish we’d had more than one night here Nothing at all
- Jeannette (10/5): Exceptional - Perfect stay. Very attentive and nice staff. Breakfast and dinner were great and tasty. The morning walk was so enjoyable. The reading room had even a nice puzzle which we made. Nice swimming pool. We wished we could stay longer. The dogs are friendly too. Thank you very much! 😊
- Antonio (10/5): Again … outstanding!!! - Absolutely outstanding!
Here the time stopped 100y ago! They keep as much as possible originally, yes for sure not new and some comfort is missing, but I prefer it like this! Outstanding! Would go to stay again! Anytime All in general. The crew is very nice and helpful!
- Jonatan (10/5): Exceptional - The staff, the garden and the view. The house as a special vibe with its location in the nature and you can really relax and recharge your batteries.
The food, especially the perfect curry, is also the best we had in Sri Lanka. The beautiful view, the local vibe and the peacefulness of this place combined with the outstanding hospitality of the staff made our stay so incredibly enjoyable.
There are also two very cute dogs, Vevlet and Rocky:)
We also loved the activities which were offered by the hotel, like the 6 hours hike, a tour of the tea factory and the village walk with the hotel manager. We really like the old style of the house. However, a minor renovation might be needed
- Sophie (7/5): A charming house - The environment is very beautiful, also the house and the terrace and the views. Food was good! The manager of the house was not very communicative and welcoming, although the butler was very friendly and compensate this.
- Alison (9/5): Very special place - Outstanding location for views, nature and tranquility. Staff were incredibly helpful and friendly, nothing was too much trouble. Food the best on our trip so far. The house has authentic charm rather than luxury but this made the experience more special. Not the best mattress or shower but they were perfectly acceptable.
- Alice (10/5): Beautiful butique hotel full of history and character surrounded by amazing garden and hills - Amazing house full of history surrounded by beautiful nature. Great food, lovely staff, big rooms and a yoga terrace. Would definitely come back. We loved everything - just wished we could have stayed longer.
- Anna (9/5): Historic home in a beautiful setting - Beautiful oasis with lovely surroundings. An historic home still in much of its original state. An interesting place to stay. Beautiful guided walk through local area and many spices and plants pointed out to us A bit expensive compared to other properties we have stayed at
- Vidyarathna (9/5): Overall this banglow is best suited for small family to stay with some decent facilities. - The privacy and the environment and very helpful staff. I thought the cleanliness should have improved.
- Glynn (9/5): Beautiful, relaxing and friendly stay - We had a wonderfully quiet and relaxing stay here, with our standout experience being the fantastic cooking class we took with the owner’s wife whose recipes we’ll cherish for a long time. Lovely to get some clean air, kick back in an old tea plantation house and enjoy the views and nature. Fans were available but AC would have been a pleasant addition.
- Jacqueline (7/5): Comfortable, welcoming tea estate guest house - Good location/climate. Peaceful and relaxing, surrounded by bird sounds. Comfortable old tea estate guest house.
Lush garden. Excellent staff Moorthy and Dino (cook) who took care of us.
Longer and shorter walks from the property, need to be able to manage hills.
Transportation can be organised if required.
- Ludmila (7/5): Tropical paradise - The view from this property is breathtaking of a tropical mountains and forest. Something you see in the movies. Beautifully maintained garden. The host is very kind and helpful and clearly wants to make your stay as best as it can be. The trip to the village was very interesting (better early morning as it gets hot later), a big thank you to the lovely guide. We had all meals at the property as I think was the only option having in mind the difficult last 500m of road and the location. The food was good local cuisine. The property needs a little investment to make the stay more comfortable and enjoyable. Like fresh paint, cleaner sofas in living rooms, updated bathrooms, mosquito nets on the windows (it was difficult to arrange the net above my bed which clearly needed replacement). There's no A/C in the room so it was hot and very humid in the evening (it rained a lot). Also the lights in the room need rethinking. The path that leads to property is more suitable for tuktuk, not a car. Beware leeches in the grass after rain, one had a feast of me as I didn't expect there's such thing.
- Peter (10/5): Exceptional -
- Fabian (10/5): Exceptional - We loved to stay at the strathisla guesthouse. The view is amazing, the garden with the pool perfect, the staff really friendly and welcoming. We appreciated the tasty food. Definitely a place we would come back.
- Menno (9/5): Superb - One foot in history, one foot in paradise... a beautiful old building in a magnificent setting. Excellent staff, superb dinner and breakfast! Very pleasant walk around the estate. A bit too expensive.
- Sylvie (9/5): Superb - Great place with a stunning view, nice walk around and excellent food!
- Emma (10/5): Magical place, don’t tell everyone, I don’t want it spoilt! We’re definitely going back. - This place is magical, it wowed us from the moment we saw it. The location is stunning, right in the middle of the mountain jungle with fascinating flora and fauna. The old colonial style house is soaked in history. Morphti was an amazing host and Mohan is the most amazing cook, we had some exceptional feasts of great Sri Lankan food. We will definitely go back! The road up to the guest house was a single lane track up a mountain side and the track down to the house was very narrow and bumpy with a big drop. It unnerved us in a medium sized van
- Carolyn (10/5): amazing place to unwind for a few days. - Super relaxing visit, owner very helpful and friendly. Breakfast and dinner delicious. obviously like all properties in Sri Lanka they have had a very tough 3 years so have fallen a little behind with maintenance. As guests are returning they are busy painting etc. but this does not detract from the great ambience of the place.
- Philipp (10/5): Exceptional - amazing place, the most beautiful stay I had in Sri Lanka, returned there for the third time and can highly recommend. located in the middle of nature, with lots of plants and animals, and extremely classy hotel
- Ilaf (10/5): a perfect homely stay that warms your soul - One of the most memorable stays on our trip. The staff’s kindness and generosity truly is above and beyond. The place itself is incredible comfortable and beautiful and the food is delicious! There’s nothing not to love. nothing!
