Guest Reviews
- Paul (10/5): - Everything the, staff and the place was amazing Nothing
- Robert (4/5): Somewhere to sleep. - Parking and friendly welcome. I stayed in the POD which was very small but acceptable for one night. There was nowhere to put a case/ rucksack or clothes. The tv had such poor reception that it couldn’t be watched. There was no internet and the mobile signal was poor. The oil filled radiator didn’t work. The electric shower could only be turned off by getting out and switching off at the mains.
- Sharyn (10/5): - Lovely room and amazing staff
- Nicholas (8/5): Very comfortable room offering excellent value for money, and I would happily stay there again. - I arrived very late and the hotel had made arrangements for this which was great. My room and bathroom were very spacious and scrupulously clean. The staff were very helpful and kind.
The Castle Hotel provided excellent value for money and was ideal for my overnight stay. N/A
- Barton (6/5): Pleasant, good location. - Clean and tidy. Good size room. Good location Requested a room with a bath which wasn’t provided. More expensive than normal. Bed uncomfortable.
- Esther (6/5): Pleasant and cheap. - Ideal location for my work, easy to find and had parking. Bed uncomfortable, no mug left in the room for coffee / tea.
- Louise (8/5): Good value for money - Room was lovely, and the breakfast in the morning was great. Enjoyed the self service. The check in was less straighforward than we'd hoped with no one to greet us at reception, but once we managed to call the managers it was smooth.
- Kayleigh (8/5): Cheap, cheerful and everything you would want/need for a night away from home - The staff couldn't do enough for you... the TV in our room didnt work so they tried their hardest to sort it and when they couldnt they brought another TV in the room so we had TV! I LOVED that it was dog friendly so my boy could come stay with me. We were having to leave before breakfast was being served and they showed us how we could help ourselves and we really enjoyed it! Clean overall, enjoyed a banging pizza in the pub downstairs in the evening. Lovely location.. in a pretty little town. Cheap and cheerful! Would definitely stay again! I generally dont think I have anything to put here..
- Nancy (7/5): Really good value for money, a nice comfy bed and a good breatfast - The breakfast was continental with lovely fresh bread.
- Steven (6/5): Value for money - The location for anyone exploring mid-Wales Carpets in the room and staircase could do with a refresh.
- Wayne (6/5): - The location The TV didn't work and couldn't find any staff in evening to complain to
- Claire Ludlam (10/5): -
- Richard (1/5): Rubbish won’t be returning. - Not much, location is good Bar shut at eight and the staff disappeared, it’s a shambles
No tv
No hot water, staff couldn’t care less.
- Claire Ludlam (8/5): - Lovely family room, own entrance and patio. Lovely hosts breakfast in the morning. Fantastic value for money
- Richard (1/5): This place makes Fawlty Towers look like a 5star - The location Not having hot water
Tv didn’t work
Room was in need of a proper cleaning
Staff didn’t have a clue how to run a hotel
Breakfast was a joke
- Hall (5/5): - The room was fine. It was what we needed for our overnight stay so no complaints.
The room was clean, bedding, towels, shower gels all fine.
There was an issue with the hot water that was fixed within 30mins.
Very reasonable price for the 3 of us with breakfast included.
- Francis (8/5): - It was only a quick stop over, everything was clean & tidy.
The staff was pleasant and helpful.
As I was up and out early, they have a continental breakfast avaliable, thats there ready, you just help yourself, which was perfect for me. It's situated on a busy junction and some of the lorries can be noisy
- Andrew (8/5): -
- simon (1/5): Absolutely terrible experience. Avoid especially if your a family. - Staff were friendly.
Area is amazing with gorgeous country side. The room was run down, dirty, smelt of fish from chip shop next door and not in keeping with advertised pictures on booking.com. Beds were uncomfortable. The boiler kept groaning every two minutes keeping us awake with very little sleep for duration of the stay.
- Arpita (10/5): I love to come again🥰🫶🏼🫶🏼 - Everything i liked. Was soo cosy vibes clean and lovely room. Nice smell. Very big room with attached two toilet 🥰had a good time. Nice view front of hotel.
- Catts (3/5): Would not recommend - It’s a good location if you are visiting Hay-on-Wye The family suite in the basement needs serious attention. It desperately needs to be scrubbed, repaired, and painted. It smells like sewage and feels damp. There is mold on several walls, random mdf over holes, dirty walls, and just kind of gross. The beds are fine, the staff is nice, breakfast is simple but gets the job done. But they shouldn’t be charging more than £50 a night until it gets repaired and cleaned up.
- John (7/5): -
- Nicholas (7/5): I enjoyed this quirky little stopover! - Breakfast was basic, but no complaints as it was complementary.
I stayed in the 'Pod', a self-contained wooden outbuilding which was warm and cosy: just a bed and small bathroom.
I slept well and would consider staying again, as I like the village and its proximity to my destination, Hay - on - Wye
(bookshops). No complaints! It was cosy and fine.
- Edward (8/5): Excellent value, friendly and helpful staff, great location for mountain trails and sight seeing. - Breakfast was self-serve with everything you would expect, freshly brewed coffee was available if requested. The Hotel also runs a Fish and Chip shop, so fish and chips on the Friday we arrived was really good, fresh chips and great fish. The room we had was a good size, comfortable bed, again a good size. The shower worked well with good pressure, and the radiators were adjustable so the room temperature was as we needed. Little could be improved for what we paid. A lot of thought had been put in by the owners to make this a sustainable accommodation available to people who want uncomplicated facilities to enjoy the Countryside.
- Karen (3/5): Terrible access to the bedrooms. Staff are really nice. - The staff are very helpful and friendly. Lots of tea coffee and milk. The bathroom was super clean with snowy white towels. The pillows on the bed are disgusting, brown and sweaty. The bed was hard and needs a good mattress topper or decent mattress. The bedroom needs a deep clean, cobwebs on the walls and old water staining on the ceiling.
- Kathryn (10/5): - I needed to have a different room for a medical reason which they were very supportive and kind about. I was changed to a different room straight away.
Great acces to the garden from the room which I needed due to having 2 dogs with me.
Continental brealfastwas available even though we left early in the morning. Nothing
- Debra (8/5): We had a nice welcome and the room was clean and comfortable - The room was clean and comfortable. The staff were friendly and welcoming. It could have done with a bit of an upgrade in the reception/bar area.
- Pytlak (2/5): - Didn't look like on the picture Totally different then look on picture. Old and dirty
- Muhammed Ali (10/5): -
- Jane (1/5): HAMMER HOUSE HOTEL ....... DON'T STAY - NOTHING, ABSOLUTELY, NOTHING. EVERYTHING.
Horrendous accommodation, stale smell everywhere.
Room filthy, carpets black and stained. Bathroom full of mould, walls back in sections.
Bed looked like a crime scene.
Bottom flat sheet was clean, but underneath ...... WOW
Mattress protector was not a protector, it was a flimsy topper. Disgustingly filthy, full of urine stains, the smell was overpowering.
The quilt was vile. Someone had obviously been murdered and wrapped in it, dried blood stains covered top to bottom.
I have NEVER seen anything like this. No one there on arrival, just a piece of paper on a table with the key and room number. No duty staff or manager, only a cleaner.
The whole place felt dirty.
We did not stay, there was no way we were sleeping in that room ..... we left.
Three night we booked for. The pictures on Booking.com are 100% deceiving, nothing like the hotel on their website.
I would absolutely NOT recommend staying here.
We have raised a serious complaint to Booking.com regarding this hotel on their website. Booking.com have informed us that there will not be any refund. They had contacted the hotel, but closed the complaint.
My concerns have obviously fallen on deaf ears, Booking.com gladly take your money and their customer service is atrocious.
.
- lisa (5/5): Poor - A gentleman sat outside and showed us our room but said he was a guest? Very friendly 🙂 Dirty carpet on the way up the stairs, light in hallway constantly coming on! Just looked abandoned 😕
- aled (7/5): - Very reasonable, good service and comfortable
- Vanessa (6/5): Slightly disappointing but the room and staff were good. - The room was very clean and comfortable and the staff were lovely and friendly. There are very steep stairs. The only food available was from the attached fish and chip shop. Surprisingly despite it being a Friday the pub was closed as there were no staff to open it. I didn’t like having to eat my morning toast off a paper plate.
- Sandrine (7/5): -
- Hoxsas (10/5): Amazing - Breathtaking views lovely staff and clean room.
Will definetly use again
- Nicola (7/5): - It was help yourself to breakfast ~ but the location was great for a one night stay. Whilst the room was clean & comfortable there was no one there to check us in ~ just our room keys with our name on a piece of paper ~ when we checked out we just left our keys on the table.
- Zoe (4/5): - It was in a good location The sign says 'a warm welcome' yet I walked in and absolutely no one was there I had to ring 2 different numbers for someone to come, I asked questions about checking out and breakfast that was included and they didn't know the answers. The room was dirty and the overall inside of the building was really run down, breakfast was included which consisted of either crumpets, toast or cereal, there were no staff for us to check out so we just left the keys. Overall didn't think it was worth £75.
- Tim (10/5): The place to stay in Talgarth! - This is the perfectly situated hotel, equidistant from the literary centre of the universe that is Hay on Wye and the Town that has everything, Brecon.
Beautiful rooms, fantastic hot showers, endless breakfasts and the most hospitable staff you can imagine!
But a huge added bonus!
There is a fish and chip shop beside the hotel that serves some of the best food in Talgarth at very reasonable prices. In the area? Stay at the Castle. I do!
- Imogen (8/5): Friendly and helpful staff. Comfortable, clean and very reasonable. - Very accommodating when we were in an emergency. Staff helpful and friendly. Room comfortable and clean.
Microwave & fridge in breakfast area was useful for making dinner. Fruit etc available. Self-service breakfast, so not cooked breakfast. Initially no vegan options but Katherine got plant milk in especially.
- Freya (9/5): I would stay here again, great value for money - Very friendly staff and allowed me to have an early breakfast which was great for an early get away. Breakfast was nice with a good continental selection. Walls a little thin so could hear other people.
- Robert Maxson (1/5): Nunca volveré - El único hotel disponible Asqueroso. Poco higiénico
- Keith (9/5): -
- Dominykas (1/5): I am a travel agent and will Never use them again - It would help if the staff replied to emails and complaints about the state of the rooms Lack of communication
- Gareth (8/5): -
- Rhiannon (10/5): -
- Decklan (8/5): -
- Louise (8/5): Pleasant! - Quiet. Good location. Staff were very friendly and very kind/accommodating! N/a
- Lye (5/5): Passable for a quick stop. - Upgraded to a family room which was a good size and with plent of facilities. Check in was not well handled, nobody present and no key. A local had to go and find the manager elsewhere to let us in.
Strong smell of fish (its behind a fish and chip shop)
- dave (10/5): -
- Kasia (7/5): Good price good location - Very good price, comfortable and basic, very good location, good selection of foods for breakfast, very friendly and helpful staff Facilities quite old and dusty
- Hoxsas (10/5): -
- Simon (8/5): -
- Lisa (8/5): -
- christopher (8/5): No complaints, perfect for the Hay Festival - Friendly staff, close to Hay-on-Wye,
- elizabeth (9/5): Great for the price! Staff were really nice, friendly and helpful - Lovely location, lovely food, great price, good breakfast and lovely staff Bathroom was a little cold and the stairs needed a Hoover… that’s me being picky
- Estelle (1/5): -
- Phill (10/5): Brilliant evening - Had a fab night here. Few pints and food in the restaurant. Was all good staff were very good and welcoming. Can’t fault the place will definitely call again Nothing
- Michael (9/5): -
- Michael (10/5): -
- William (10/5): - Parking area can be overcrowded due to fish shop. Rest was perfect
- Hannah (10/5): Great little place. - Parking was easy, staff were absolutely wonderful, nothing too much trouble, room was clean, everything we needed, great water pressure in the showers, great chippy next door which we enjoyed relaxing in the room, plus a free continental breakfast. Can not fault anything
- Stella (2/5): - Nothing like the photos. Very out dated and not clean. From entering the hotel, the entrance not clean or welcoming. All key were on a table by the door. Dirty carpets. Leading up to our room dirty carpets and hadn’t been decorated for along time. All doors to the rooms were open. All scruffy rooms. Quit covers massive for the quilts and hanging to the floor. We walked into our , very scruffy and floor to the bathroom very stained and not clean. At this point we decided that we would not be staying at this hotel. Not worth £89.00 per night. We have asked for a refund with hotels.com
- Antony (6/5): - Basic but good value for money. Parking good. No staff on site at check-in, had to phone a mobile and get own keys/room allocation from a diary on the bar. Steep stairs, difficult for those with mobility issues as no staff available to assist. Bar unstaffed at the time (helped by a local customer who does casual work in the bar), and minimal choice of wines. Restaurant present (green plastic tablecloths), but only available food was by take away from next door fish&chip shop (annexed to the hotel) with usual fish&chip shop menu. Room adequate though compact. Washbasin very small, very difficult to fill the kettle. Nice shower. Room clean, but not serviced between day1&2. Second day, restaurant as before, went to local pub. On return, bar had closed at 8pm. Continental breakfast only (self service) but OK.
- Gillian (2/5): - Property tired and needs lots of improvement.Continental breakfast abysmal. Overpriced and not recommended.
- Kevin (8/5): - Rom was clean and tidy, states it a hotel but it’s more like a family run BnB. Very smooth stay in a small village in wales. Can’t really fault the place
- Debra (7/5): Lovely meeting some of the staff very helpful, perfect location, - Lovely to meet the owner , and a couple of the staff, couldn’t do enough for you Didn’t have our room cleaned, or our towels changed
- jason (1/5): Oh god - Nothing Everything
- Francois (5/5): - The bed was comfortable and the room has a window in the bathroom. It was over 30 degrees that weekend so my room was kept chilled by opening the bathroom and room window over night giving an enjoyable draft.
Nice location too. Good to go cycling and running. I didn't had big expectations from this very rural small hotel. It was good enough. Staff could easily make it a bit more comfortable with a bit more attention to small details. Beside the Saturday evening I didn't see any member of staff. Nor for breakfast or the whole Sunday. The restaurant was closed but no sign of staff. I was cautious with my toilet paper as it was no spare in the room.
- Alyson (6/5): Disappointing - We needed a Talgarth location as we were walking from a family wedding a mile or so away so it was a good location. It was pretty quiet. The shower was good and they had a large shelf/ cabinet on the wall for putting your toiletries which is often overlooked. The continental breakfast had a good selection of cereals. Would be good to include some bananas for topping cereal. China plates instead of paper too. As mentioned in previous posts the whole place is a little unloved and dated. As soon as you go up.the stairs you notice the dirty and stained carpets and badly painted walls. In our room some attempt had been made to freshen up the bathroom but the toilet was strange with a seat that was a bad fit and a top to the cistern that wasn't a match. The shower wa good however. I don't mind spiders but there wre quite a few cobwebs on the ceiling. The room was a double but only the size of a single. We were very cramped. It all seemed a bit impersonal as we hardly saw anyone and had to help ourselves. With a good lick of paint, new carpets and some attention to cleaning details it could be much improved.
- David (4/5): - Buffet breakfast was of good quality. Double bed knackered with no mattress protector. Room door not proper fire door, light shining underneath. TV didn't receive terrestrial channels.
- Darren (6/5): - Poor house keeping and poor breakfast overpriced for what you get
- geoffrey (5/5): The staff were very friendly and helpful but the hotel needs. a complete upgrade. - Poor Hotel rundown!
- Reynold (4/5): - The bathrooms, bedding & towels were spotlessly clean The room could do with redecorating as there were pieces of plywood on the ceiling and one wall.
Also the room was very musty & caused some throat & chest irritation
- Dave (5/5): - Location was good. Room was shabby. Evidence of water leak in the ceiling. Definitely musty damp odour. Carpet stained.
Bathroom in need of update, mouldy residue.
I did think the other rooms looked better while being nosey m
- Katie (1/5): - Nothing The whole hotel, the rude staff
- Parry (10/5): Very nice place to stay. - The staff were fantastic from when I arrived. I felt at ease the bar manager guided me where to get my keys. Interacted with me. Helped me with ordering dinner as I was exhausted he got my cutlery condiments took my order brought my food out to me i I was sat on a chair as im severely disabled. He went out of his way. He brought my drinks to me coffee and a coke. The coffee machine is excellent quality coffee. I would give it 10. I was tired after my food and they helped me with my luggage to my room. I arrived at the room I was going to be staying in it was so private and it felt so relaxing. I opened the door as I was on crutches. The room looked lovely everything was spotlessly clean. Fresh bedding. The tea and coffee tray was full. The en suite bathroom was spotlessly clean. It was a very peaceful room i didn't expect it to be so quiet. I went for a break and thoroughly enjoyed my first night. I didn't stay the 2nd night as a family emergency happened and I had to leave. The breakfast bar self service was fully equipped with everything and more to choose from even fruit and nuts. Breakfast i would give a 9. Generally I had a lovely relaxing peaceful stay with no complaints. Thank you everyone for being so kind and helpful. Im definitely going back. I would have liked a cooked breakfast option.
- sally (4/5): - Continental breakfast Cleanliness. Very tired hotel
- Andrew (5/5): - Breakfast ( continental) very good
Location somewhat remote Dinner was somewhat spoiled by soggy chips
- Batbaatar (4/5): -
- James (4/5): A bolthole when there is nothing else available, particularly if you like fish'n'chips. - better breakfast than expected Very basic rooms above a fish'n'chip shop.
Next to main road so some noise in the rooms.
Uncomfortable beds with sagging mattresses.
Bizarre check-in experience with keys on a table.
No other restaurant options in the village .
- P (3/5): -
- Suzanne (4/5): Disappointing - would not stay again. - The bed was comfortable and bedding clean. Good TV with Netflix. Very tired throughout. Stained, worn out carpets, uninviting breakfast room, outside garden space full of litter, black grime and discoloured sealant in shower.
- Morris (3/5): -
- Katie (1/5): -
- Sun Young Bae (8/5): - Excellent for family travel.
2 shower and toilet.
Breakfast was okay self service Space rooms
- WANDRR (6/5): - Lovely Fish and chips restaurant in the building. Great food and large portions. Stairs were very steep. Continental breakfast was not great.
- Richard (7/5): -
- paul (10/5): -
- Hermine (10/5): Geweldig !! - Gastvrijheid
Vriendelijk
Service Wisten niet dat restaurant op zondag niet open is ; stond niet op booking site ; tip voor restaurant ernaast was super lekkere Indiase keuken !!
- Steve (7/5): Functional convenient hotel for a 1 night stopover - Great variety and everything you would want in a continental breakfast Not your fault but a fan would have been wonderful due to the extremely hot weather!
- Mary (1/5): - The room was stuffy and wasn’t clean , didn’t stay the night there when saw it , left and moved somewhere else !!
- Gosia (9/5): - Lovely view from the windows, close to local shops ( co-op, Morissons). Lovely staff.
The accommodation comes with a breakfast which is a big plus. Comfy bed, big bathroom, iron and ironing board in the room.
I would recommend 👌
- Tim (3/5): Complete dissapointment - Leaving it We booked 2 rooms . The first was in a double room which was adequate.
The second was in an "apartment" which was nothing better than a garden shed.
It had no windows and was hotter than a sauna.
My friend would have had to sleep with the door wide open onto the outside to get any air .
It was amicably agreed with a staff member for my friend to move in with me , sleeping on a camp bed , which he did.
There is an ACUTE FIRE HAZARD with that "pod" but it also has a personal safety issue.
I have twice asked to have a chat with the owner.
Both were ignored.
I wouldn't recommend this place .
- Omar (7/5): Enjoyable - Very good Just a bit of dusting needed for the room and bathroom……otherwise everything is okay
- Westwood (6/5): - Village location Not very clean
- Jeff (10/5): - the staff were very pleasant and kind , ( especially Kath ) taking time to have a lovely conversation, also very helpful .lovely stay can't fault it . highly recommend 👌 booked by mistake, but had excellent welcome
- Karin (2/5): skit vistelese - skit hotel.
- Amanda (5/5): You get what you pay for - Staff very friendly, bed linen clean Very tired, dusty. Shower tray had a huge crack in it which you can see they’ve tried to glue together but it was covered in damp as was most of the silicone in the shower. Couldn’t open the window I. The room due to the chip shop smell of oil. Did have a ac unit in the room but very loud
- Sarah (6/5): - Room seemed to be mid-renovation, with some things looking new and others in need of replacing or upgrading.
We booked and arrived very late so were grateful they could accommodate that. Maybe the room had only been partially cleaned from the previous stay due to the late notice? The bed was clean and well-made, but there was rubbish in the drawers and it hadn't been hoovered. Toilet didn't look clean either. The next day I asked if someone could hoover and they did, but not very well and with either an old hoover or one that needed emptying (it left behind that musky smell that old hoovers have).
There was plenty of space to hang and store clothes and a small tea & coffee station, but only one mug and one spoon for a double room. Very limited supply of toiletries, though we take our own everywhere so not a massive issue for us. It was day 3 before we got a top-up of toilet roll so we'd been replenishing it ourselves.
The (cream) carpet was heavily stained and really needs replacing. We could see other rooms had new-looking grey carpet, which added to the feeling of it being mid-renovation.
There was a squashed spider on the bathroom ceiling and lots of cobwebs.
It was okay as a low-budget option. Could be a lovely place to stay with more attention to detail.
