Guest Reviews
- Brandon (9/5): -
- Joanne (10/5): Lovely stay, highly recommend - Lovely room, great locations and lovely staff The only issue was the creaky floorboard however this is to be expected in a property of this age.
- Joanne (8/5): Clean comfortable room with very good food and a warm welcome - Very clean, very good food.
- SARAH (9/5): -
- Sean (8/5): Two night stay in Oakham - the staff were super friendly and helpful. The food was great too. We had breakfast and dinner, which definitely lived up to expectations. The bar area was small and friebdly. The rooms were a little dated and we had a cracked window pane, but that was minor. The shower could be updated but the water pressure and temperature were good.

- keith (8/5): Obviously not happy with having to switch hotels mid stay - Never got to have breakfast as had to move to another hotel as reported below On the plus side the admiral hornblower was very helpfull with things Arrived to find no reservation in my name, but conformation on booking dot com. The hornblower did find me a room for the friday night, but could not accomodate me on sat night. In fairness they did manage to find me a different hotel for sat night which they paid for and was not to far away, This was not ideal as this was also the day of my sons wedding and ment a lot of moving things at a very short notice
- Richard (10/5): -
- Nigel (7/5): Excellent base for Rutland - Excellent location for exploring Rutland. Good choice at breakfast - really enjoyed the croissants - and dinner. Very creaky floorboards. We were next to aircon/heating ducts. The noise didn’t bother us but some people might not like. Bed not especially comfortable

- Brian (7/5): I enjoyed my first visit to Oakham and this was a pleasant place to stay. I would book again. - This is a lovely old Georgian inn, right in the centre of Oakham. My room was very comfortable. The place is nicely furnished and has some style. The whole place felt a bit shabby. There was no clear Reception area and the carpets upstairs were dirty. There was no vegetarian Full English breakfast offering, so what I was given as a replacement for the meat version was not filling.
- Emily (8/5): -
- FRANK (3/5): Tremendous staff, good food nice room but let down by poor after sales service - Good location. Private parking Good friendly staff There was a problem with the water heating overnight so that in the morning there was no hot water anywhere in the hotel. I understand these things happen but it’s not reasonable to continue to charge the full price for the room when some of the FACILTIES i.e. the hot water do not work. I have emailed twice and nobody has bothered to reply which is poor. Very poor.
- John (7/5): Enjoyed it - Rooms could do with a lick of paint, strong smell of laundry extraction in hall way.
- Lucy (8/5): Very pleasant stay. Would certainly return if in the area - Friendly staff, excellent food and presentation of food. Quiet room even though the pub downstairs was lively Room needed better curtains. Shower tray needs a non slip mat for safety.
- Connie (9/5): Perfect central location - Excellent location and superb breakfast accommodating a gluten intolerant guest well
- Ronald (8/5): -
- Angela (10/5): Great stay. Great food. - Lovely comfy room, great shower. Food extremely nice.
- Carol (7/5): Excellent location , room was clean and well presented , although not the room I’d booked , my fault I suppose , I didn’ - Location , staff were friendly ,room was clean and well presented, location parking We were in room 5 and the floor boards were extremely creaky , I think the staff quarters were above us as well , creating more evening noise,
I’d also booked a four poster bed , which we didn’t get ,
- Catherine (8/5): Good - Location superb free carpark at the back quiet room Bed was uncomfortable mattress needs replacing
- annette (10/5): -
- Samantha (9/5): Friendly staff, nice rooms, good location. - A lovely pub, restaurant and place to stay. The staff were so friendly and helpful. The food was lovely, albeit restrictive for vegetarians and vegans. Would be nice to have more options. Room was clean and had everything we needed. Highly recommend this place. Not a huge choice for vegetarians and breakfast was mainly some sort of eggs with the exception of pastries and yoghurt and a fry up. Would have been nice to have a veggie alternative of their fry up and I think you would struggle if you were a vegan. But what we had both for dinner and breakfast was amazing. With such talented chefs im sure they could come up with a few more options. Parking at the pub is limited but there is parking close by.
- Philippa (10/5): - I stayed for a week with a group of friends on a cycling holiday. We all agreed it was one of the best hotels we'd stayed in.
The staff were friendly and helpful.
I particularly liked that there were new water bottles in the room every day not just day one, good tea in the rooms, decent sized bath towels and a lovely walk in shower where I could set the temperature before getting in.
These small things just made a lovely hotel that bit nicer.
We ate in the restaurant one evening and the meal was delicious too.
I would definitely return there if I stay in Oakham again.
- Lorna (10/5): Really lovely few days cycle trip with friends in old characterful hotel. - Really nice old hotel in the centre of Oakham. Big room, comfortable bed, solid old .wood furniture, large bathroom, great toilet paper (Premier Inn take note) vast towels.
The staff could not have been nicer. The food was great if not cheap. The bar was full of locals each evening. Very nice beer garden. They found storage for our 6 bikes. Parking was fine once you found it and got through the narrow arch way.
- Jeremy (9/5): -
- Guest (8/5): -
- nigel (10/5): Terrific - The staff were terrific and my ground floor courtyard facing room was terrific Two things: the lack of cereals for breakfast.
and secondly - and the worst thing of all - the cutlery was cheap and nasty, thin and bending when yoiu tried to cut food - which the knives were too blunt to do anyway. Did mention it to the staff as the only two, and very very minor points - the hotel; is GREAT
- Angela (10/5): Lovely stay. - Breakfast was magic.
Brilliant location
- Carolyn (10/5): -
- Ian (6/5): - The bar and restaurant The room. Creaky floor and mattress. Shower hard to control
- duncan (9/5): -
- Jamie (9/5): -
- Jacqui (4/5): Extremely disappointing and not value for money - Should start by saying serving staff were on the whole friendly apart from one who when told our dinner which was the pasta dish was almost uncooked and unedible…no apology or recompense was offered …no check-back had been made for us to alert them. Breakfast was the worse I have ever had in any UK hotel….burnt sourdough under sloppy scrambled eggs which I asked to be recooked to a drier consistency…no check back again to ask if we required additional hot drinks….presentation of the breakfast foods was shocking…..no finesse and not worth whatever the included price was. All this after a FREEZING COLD shower. We sat at the same table for breakfast as we had for dinner….crumbs were still visible so hadn’t been cleaned?? pretty much everything……the room was spacious and quirky and that was all the positives we could find. Loved the bathroom…..On-site car parking incredibly difficult to find…. We won’t be back to stay here….
- William (9/5): -
- Maureen (7/5): Not good customer service - The room was clean and bed very comfortanle the breakfast was excellent There was muddle up with booking I bookef and paid for 4 nights the payment from booking .com was successful check in was fine then on the 3rd day lady said I only paid for 2 nights anid their system was not very good she seem to not know when I came or was leaving. On the day I left when I handed the keys in was asked again if I paid for the full stay. I will not be staying there again!.
- Alan (4/5): Very disappointed - Great location for our planned visit. Room booked and paid for was for a four poster bed with bath and shower. Not available so room 5 was the replacement. No hot water and a very noisy fan on outside of room from kitchens which afforded us a very uncomfortable night after our day of travelling. Following day moved to small room number 6 which was across the courtyard with just a shower hot water OK but no heating in room. Very disappointed with our stay at the Admiral Hornblower which could have been very much better!!
- Vikki (7/5): Admiral Hornblower has plenty of character - The staff we're brilliant nothing was too much for them always on hand if you needed any help . Breakfast was lovely except the Luke warm coffee but ordered tea after that and it was fine . location was perfect in the heart of the village the bar was small but welcoming.tea and coffee in the rooms and toiletries the maid was lovely as was all the kitchen and bar staff who provided a great service . The creaky floors it was very loud and could hear people walking about I expected some creaking but didn't expect it to be so loud almost like thumping so that woke us up several times in the night pillows very lumpy
- Allan (10/5): - Very clean, very attentive staff and good food, breakfast and dinner. I would recommend this hotel. Nothing.
- Phyllis (9/5): -
- Christopher (6/5): -
- Pat (8/5): Perfect location, clean & comfortable - Lovely old building with modern conveniences. Very clean & comfortable. Breakfast was farcical.
Menu was available on the table.
One guy serving on his own. Unable to offer the choices. Tea served after a long wait. Tea bags in cups. No milk.
Porridge, no compote, no honey. He did bring the compote eventually. Toast was seared but not toasted.
We ate our breakfast with teaspoons as dessert spoons were not available despite asking.
- Sharon (10/5): -
- Guest (7/5): -
- Martin (9/5): Comfortable, welcoming and convenient stay with a great breakfast included - Comfortable room in a converted outbuilding adjacent to car park, generally nice and quiet from the environment but some noise from guests above. A great breakfast, very helpful and welcoming staff. Would definitely stay again. Nothing really
- Tim (10/5): We will return - Fantastic stay! Eden, James, and the whole team were extremely welcoming and attentive. The room was spacious, comfortable, and full of charm. Breakfast was included and was excellent, freshly cooked and served to the table rather than buffet style, which made a big difference. The history of the pub was really interesting, and the location was perfect. Nothing, excellent stay
- Kate (8/5): -
- Gary (10/5): Wish we had made a note that food stops at 5 p.m. on a Sunday , so had to eat elsewhere. - Breakfast excellant.
Manager moved his car so that I could park.
Restaurant very busy when we arrived mid day Sunday. No faults.
- Nicholas (10/5): Felt very welcome as soon as we arrived, breakfast was first class and the room was very warm. - Location was good, lovely atmosphere Nothing, is was all good
- lesley (9/5): Overall good stay - Lovely hotel.. friendly staff..breakfast was good..good location..bed was big and comfy..good sized room and en-suite showerwas lovely..would stay again Room could do decorating..no door knobs on wardrobe they had fallen off and put inside wardrobe
- Clare (6/5): Lots of potential, lovely historic building - We love the Hornblower as a pub and have frequented it for years, for breakfast in particular. Friends had stayed here overnight and so I was pleased to have the opportunity to stay. Our room was in the annexe, overlooking the very small carpark. The room was lovely, clean with all items expected. The bathroom had lovely big soft towels and the shower was very good.
Breakfast was very good, and came out quickly. The room was overwhelmingly hot and windows not easy to open.
Friday morning was bin day and at just after 7 am the noise from crashing glass etc was not conducive to a lie-in!
Staff were not particularly friendly.
- Dave (9/5): We had a good time and the staff were excellent looking after us. Thank you. - Great choice of breakfast and good quality and portions Nothing would go back again if in the area.
- Lucy (8/5): Great stay, ideal for what we required - Hotel in great location, room lovely and had all we needed Bit awkward parking as locals use it as well as staying guests
- Katie (10/5): A wonderful night in Oakham - This is a beautiful period property which has been lovingly restored. It has lots of character. And creaky floors!! Our room was beautiful, spotlessly clean and the bed was so comfortable. The staff were all really friendly and efficient. Superb breakfast too. A great place to stay. Nothing!
- Tongue (8/5): Lovely hotel with great food, a very enjoyable short break with the family - Great atmosphere, really good food and very friendly staff Carpark was very small and difficult to get a space
- Linda (6/5): - Food Noise from rooms above due to squeaky floorboards.
- Mark (7/5): Relaxed & enjoyable, would go back. - Quaint & charming old pub. Car park not easy to find and limited parking.
- John (9/5): Very pleasant stay, the evening meal and breakfast were both superb. - We have eaten in the restaurant many times and have never been disappointed. The position is excellent and suits our purposes perfectly. If we had one concern, it was the bed. I think the mattress had collapsed or some springs were broken. We mentioned it to the manager when we left.
- duncan (9/5): Walking and talking catch up with some old friends - Friendly and warm feeling to the place. Nice place to stay Would have liked a bath as the bathroom was easily large enough
- Abigail (10/5): Loved it, felt relaxed before my day of training, was full - Great stay, friendly staff and food was delicious.
Bed was super comfy and shower very powerful! Car park was a big busy but not really an issue
- Liz (9/5): - Food
Well fitted bedroom and ensuite Noisy road
Blind not a blackout
- duncan (9/5): Great weekend catch up with friends and a stroll around Rutland water - Great breakfast and location. Really friendly staff and a nice warm feeling about the place. I would have liked a bath as the
Bathroom was quite large it would have made my stay perfect.
- Barry (10/5): Relaxed atmosphere in the heart of Oakham, great food and very nice staff - Beautiful building in the centre of Oakham. Beer garden is was perfect to eat lunch in the sun and breakfast was fantastic. Highly recommended...
- L-J (9/5): -
- Kathryn (8/5): Weekend away with friends - Lovely bedroom bed very comfy location great Carpet on stairs in hallway was thread bare . Difficult finding car park. Ran out of milk for breakfast
- Deb (8/5): Great friendly atmosphere. Old country charm. Clean and comfortable. Great location. Just breakfast let it down. - Great locality within Oakham town. Rooms clean and large size. Friendly staff. Retained old coaching inn charm. Good choice of breakfast. The breakfast wasn’t the best. Food wasn’t hot. The poached eggs were hard. The smoked salmon was actually flaked salmon.
- Carlynn (7/5): Quirky but enjoyable. - The breakfast and location were both fantastic and the staff were lovely. The pub/ restaurant was obviously popular and had a good atmosphere. The room was clean and the bed was comfortable. The carpet on the stairway was threadbare and didn’t give a great first impression. We couldn’t get the radiator in the room to come on at all on the first evening and then it came on full blast in the middle of the night!
- Deborah (9/5): -
- Helen (9/5): -
- Gary (10/5): -
- Kate (5/5): Great food but wouldn’t go back. - Lovely pub and really good food - dinner and breakfast. Very cosy and warm with the fires lit. Wasn’t the most welcoming when we arrived. The room was ok but not worth £120 for the night. Quite basic and needed more to make it feel cosy.
- Rory (10/5): -
- Mia (9/5): -
- André (8/5): - Très jolie Pub/Auberge. Excellente cuisine, pittoresque. La seule chose moins bien était une fenêtre vétuste qui laissait passer un courant d'air (froid)... dommage car la chambre très bien rénovée avec une très belle salle de bain avec douche moderne.
- Thomas (10/5): -
- Anthony (10/5): Perfect 🤩 - Location, super friendly and most accommodating staff. Outstanding breakfast - amazing value for money. Nothing to dislike
- Richard (6/5): -
- Catherine (8/5): -
- Virginia (8/5): A very enjoyable few days in an excellent location. I would return. - Excellent location. Friendly, helpful staff. A diverse and interesting restaurant menu. Excellent breakfast. Log fire in the breakfast room. Decor a bit tired. Cleaning in public areas could have been more thorough.
- Janette (9/5): -
- Anne (9/5): -
- Georgina (6/5): Shame as nice Hotel - Good location
Comfortable bed
Good shower
Attentive staff Door exit light on all the time !!!
Very Annoying at night
Window blinds do not block out light !!!!
Beer Barrels delivered at 6.30am !!!!
Parking very limited
- Mark (9/5): - Good position on the high street, old world charm with real fires blazing away. Lovely menu for afternoon and evenings and great quality, breakfast was delicious and such a variety. Room was very clean and had everything you need, squeaky floorboards were a bonus and added to the ambience. Have been before, and will definitely come again. Delightful 🙂
- stephen (8/5): - The location and the breakfast It shut before 9.30 on a Wednesday
- Sally (7/5): -
- Lynne (10/5): Lovely room excellent staff - great breakfast - couldn’t fault it! - Central location Nothing
- Daisy (1/5): Terrible. - Location and breakfast. Staff inattentive, miserable, very poor service all round from check in to leaving. Dirty mattress in the car park, glass broken in the window in the room, bathroom radiator filthy looked like urine stains. Holes were filled in on the walls and not painted looked shabby. Wardrobe nob fell off in hand when opened. Was asked to call the night porter to gain access after 11pm which we did at 11:55 he was rude as we had woken him up, came down to let us in wearing just boxer shorts and didn’t speak just stormed off ahead of us.
- Anthony (8/5): An ideal location for visiting the local area - Excellent Breakfast. The evening meal we had was very good and all the staff were polite and hlpful Nothing
- Vanessa (8/5): -
- Michael (9/5): A great choice for a pre Christmas stay away. - We loved the characterful room across the courtyard to the Inn. The dining room was lovely for both dinner and breakfast.
Evening meal was delicious and relaxed. There was nothing we didn't like.
- Charlotte (10/5): -
- Mark6796 (10/5): Excellent in every way - Fabulous room and bathroom. Check in really easy. Parking a bit tight but staff were excellent, easy to find just follow your nose, not difficult at all.. Staff friendly and knowledgeable about the area. Great bar and food was excellent Nothing
- Lesley (8/5): -
- Mags (8/5): Ideal for an overnight stay in Oakham. - The pub is ideally located in Oakham town centre. The rooms have recently been tastefully upgraded. The dining and bar areas are comfortable with open fires. All staff were friendly, helpful and responsive. There was an interesting breakfast menu and portions were very generous. It was difficult to find the car park without specific instructions and post code from the pub staff. Whilst the room was very comfortable, the door didn't feel very secure and you felt somewhat exposed to people looking in and so it was necessary to have the curtains closed the whole time.
- Mark (8/5): - Open Fires, good food and staff Pillows and mattresses were old and not very comfortable.
- Peter (8/5): - Very good
- Nigel (8/5): -
