Guest Reviews
- Yasmin (10/5): -
- Wendy (9/5): We will be returning đ - Staff were great and hotel was lovely, extremely comfortable and very large bed. Dog friendly and gardens were beautiful with lots of paths to walk.
- Lane (9/5): - Beautiful location and hotel near the lake.
Rooms very nice,
Excellent service.
Food very nice.
Excellent value.
Would definitely stay again. Nothing
- Gillian (10/5): Merewood is a beautiful historic home in a fantastic location. - Merewood is a beautiful historic house. The staff, particularly Amin were all wonderful and welcoming. Breakfast was delicious. The grounds are stunning, we saw several deer. I canât think of one criticism. We loved our stay.
- Anthony (9/5): Great property, full of character. Good food also. - Lovely hotel full of character Could hear kitchen extraction fans in our bedroom but they were silent about 10pm
- Mrs. B (10/5): Food for the Soul - This was a wonderful experience and I loved the room, the view from the room, the staff, the grounds, the meals, the library and sitting rooms. The bar was nice and both restaurants served lovely meals. I didn't like the music that was playing over the speakers. It was some sort of country western music from the 1980's and I felt that it detracted from the deliciousness of the place.
- Jane (9/5): The most fantastic hotel for travelling with a dog - The hotel is a lovely old country house with phenomenal views of Lake Windermere and the surrounding countryside. The grounds and nearby are absolutely gorgeous to walk in and the staff are outstandingly welcoming of dogs. We have never been made to feel so welcome when travelling with our labrador. We will definitely return.
- DAVID (8/5): Quite well placed. Nice country house hotel. - Reasonably well placed.
Lovely country house hotel. No real negatives.
- Tom (6/5): -
- Diane (9/5): - Friendly staff
Location of hotel
Cleanliness
- Lindsey (8/5): Great stay! Staff were fantastic and made us feel so welcome. - Lovely property in its own grounds and close to town centre.
- Jane (10/5): - Gorgeous location, comfortable room super bathroom. Lovely friendly staff Nothing
- Debbie (10/5): Amazing Lication - The location, the views of Windermere. How all the staff made me & my sister very welcome.
Plus the amazing Afternoon Tea we had which was a belated birthday present for my sister. Nothing nit to like.
- Abigail (10/5): - The location and views are stunning but what really makes this place stand out is the staff. They went above and beyond to ensure we had the best stay. Would definitely recommend.
- YINING (8/5): -
- Rifat (10/5): - All of the staff were absolutely splendid. Polite, friendly, proactive, and hard working.
My room was lovely and it was great to have the nespresso machine. The views from the hotel are stunning and the drawing room is bright and great for chilling in. The food was delicious and reasonably priced. I stayed for four nights and would not hesitate to come back. Thank you to everyone at Merewood.
- Ella (10/5): Great - Old style Dated carpet
- Sheris (10/5): - Some of the smaller lights in the room didn't work, but we made due. Certainly not a deal breaker.
- Leanna (10/5): Highly recommend! - Beautiful hotel, wonderful staff, delicious food and drinks Nothing
- David (9/5): A very beautiful, classy, and comfortable place. - Staff and service were excellent. We were made the feel very welcome and at home. Breakfast was very good. Stairs for these older legs. But a gorgeous staircaseđ
- June (9/5): Fabulous Break - This beautiful old building is set in a fabulous location. The lounges were incredibly comfortable and perfect for sipping a glass of wine while gazing over the lake. The staff were incredibly welcoming, and the breakfast menu was excellent. For dinner, we opted for the grill menu, which offered a limited but reasonably priced selection. The food was delicious. The hotel is very dog-friendly and provides a doggy welcome pack upon arrival. Taking your dog for a walk around the hotel is a treat, especially round by the stunning bluebell woodland that backs the property. Iâll definitely be returning in the future. The water pressure on the shower in room 12 was very disappointing
- Peter (10/5): Fantastiskt - Finaste platsen man har sett Genuint hotell med en fantastisk vacker omgivning
- Simon (6/5): - View, comfy and clean room. Quite rude waiter. Shower was not very good at all. Condensed window so couldnt really see the fantastic view very well.
- Nguyen (10/5): -
- Jane (8/5): A lovely stylish hotel, stunning location, and very friendly staff. - We had our evening meal at the grill, which was delicious.
Breakfast was also very good.
The location is beautiful.
It was our anniversary, and we sat in the the evening sun drinking champagne before dinner.
- Paul (8/5): We enjoyed out stay and found the hotel good value for money - Great location & lovely historic building. Staff were very friendly and the food was very good. Our room was a little cramped and it would have been good to have a small fridge.
- Justine (8/5): -
- Steve (10/5): Simply a lovely and relaxing stay - Lovely location with fantastic views. Staff were very helpful and friendly. In particular very dog friendly. The upper car park was difficult for my wife to access but that was sorted by parking adjacent to the entrance.
- Margaret (9/5): Excellent country house ambience and location. - The location, staff, food and ambience were all excellent, with a special thank you to Adam who was most engaging and informative.
The open fire lit in the evening in the library really evoked the country house atmosphere. The bedroom was a little smaller than expected but enjoyed an excellent view looking down to Lake Windermere. The rather heavy quilt made for a less than comfortable night, although that is a purely subjective comment , and easily addressed by offering alternative bedding
- Kelly (8/5): -
- Gillian (10/5): -
- susan (9/5): Lovely hotel in a great location - Gorgeous location and the lovely feeling of a cosy country house hotel As a wedding party was in got quite noisy in the corridors
- Jason (10/5): Highly recommended. Amazing accommodation, and amazing staff - This would be probably the best place we have stayed. From the building to our room everything was so perfect.
Breakfast is amazing, Staff are fabulous.
- Kris (7/5): Beautiful hotel with excellent service, but rooms need some attention. - The hotel is absolutely stunning, set in a picture-perfect location with beautiful surroundings throughout. The staff were warm, welcoming and attentive, and both breakfast and dinner service were impeccable. We also really enjoyed the facilities, particularly the conservatory, billiards room and library, which added to the overall experience. The main downside was the condition of the room, which felt quite run down compared to the rest of the hotel. There were sockets hanging off the wall, non-working remotes, and a lack of usable plug sockets for things like phone charging. The âpower showerâ was also very disappointing, with extremely low pressure.
- Meg Birchall (10/5): -
- Denise (10/5): -
- Grant (8/5): Great location in stunning part of the country - Location It was ok
- Donna (7/5): Staff exceptional, with special mention to Joyce who was warm, kind and very helpful when we had trouble sleeping the fi - The architecture, setting and warmth of the staff The room was cramped, dated and poorly maintained with an awfully rock hard bed that is far to big for the room.
- Irma (9/5): -
- Costelloe (10/5): - Lovely old building in a great location with magnificent views.
- Hermione (9/5): -
- Summer (10/5): Absolutely fabulous - Such a gorgeous hotel and surrounding area, staff were exceptionally helpful and accommodating for us and our little Pomeranian and the food we had was perfect. Overall a 10/10 stay and would definitely stay again and recommend to friends and family. Nothing to dislike.
- Rachel (10/5): - It was beautiful, staff were lovely Everything was amazing no complaints
- Agnes (4/5): -
- Joy (4/5): A 3 star at best - Location was good Very outdated, not a 4 star hotel at all, rooms were very small, underwhelming and staff didnât take our requirements into consideration at all.
- Sue (9/5): - The food was excellent. The tasting menu in particular. The seven course experience was beyond expectations. The hotel accommodates dogs which caused no problems. But not impressed with animals on the settees and table in the bar area.
- Rachael (9/5): Perfect getaway with your dogs - Very dog friendly so the perfect place for a getaway with your dogs. Maybe not the best place if you don't like dogs as there were a few dog guests.
Great location to explore. Windermere and Ambleside near by.
Lovely staff. Joe and Steve especially good. Room was very small but did have a lovely lake view.
Bed was creaky.
- Catherine (9/5): A great stsy - Great hotel in a beautiful location, 3rd visit
- Terry (10/5): A beautiful gem in the Lakes... - Wow, this hotel is a little gem..! Nestled on the slope overlooking Lake Windermere, it gives you spectacular views.....
The rooms are comfortable and well laid out. The bar is lovely and offers a large selection of drinks. We had evening dinner and breakfast and the food was beautiful and plentiful....
Nothing to complain about..! Oh, the staff were excellent and looked after us very well... That our stay was short..!
- Caron (10/5): - Welcoming, friendly and warm.
Full of original character
- gary (10/5): - Nice, quaint hotel. Lovely to see that they have kept the character of the country house. Very comfortable rooms with beautiful surroundings.
- vivienne (8/5): A beautiful place to take timeout. - The staff were exceptionally helpful and friendly, making a fuss over our dog as well. Sadly it was the new chefs first day on the day we had breakfast, it was an utter disaster, however the manager dealt with it well so we wouldn't hesitate going back.
- Jennifer (10/5): Lovely break away - It was a lovely little break away It was quite far from the train and some clearer directions would have been good around train to bus connections.
- William (8/5): -
- Steve (10/5): Relaxing - great value with lots to do. Staff where excellent and helpful- will go again. - We had our dog with us - so we had the library room set up for breakfast. Great variety with helpful- friendly staff. Good hospitality drinks - snacks in our room. Comfortable room with great views of the lake. Great deal - made us feel special. Poached eggs - some ok - others well done - nothing really.
- Rob (10/5): -
- nina (8/5): Nina - Merewood is a beautiful house on a hill with lovely views. It had lots of room for you to sit and enjoy a drink. It was warm and cosy. Car park was up a steep hill with steep stairs down to hotel, had to drop off luggage on arrival as did not want to bring luggage down the steps. I'm not disabled but the otel would not be suitable if you were. Also no lift to rooms.
- Mathew (9/5): -
- Roger (10/5): -

- christopher (10/5): Great will go again despite my food commitments, lovely historic hotel please go great place - Staff all fantastic, building gorgeous. location. parking and service was the best Well, evening menu limited a bit for me, breakfast luke warm and under cooked a bit for me, suggest a hash brown instead of potato triangular pad, wine per glass expensive especially but all that said buy a bottle overall enjoyed it even after saying that still good definitely go I will again !!!
- Francisco Javier (6/5): Average - Pictures nothing to do with the reality.
Dated rooms, room number 12 bathroom fan (tractor) never stopped in whole. Light. The pancakes did not seem freshly made and appeared to have been reheated. We were asked to come for breakfast at 9:30, but when we arrived some buffet items were already unavailable.
We politely asked if they could be replenished, but felt our request was not very well received, even though we were only asking for basic items.
- Kelly (8/5): - I booked this hotel for my daughter as a Christmas present. She said the location was perfect, it was clean, the staff were friendly, and in her words very posh đ¤Ł
- Eimear (10/5): -
- David (8/5): Really nice hotel, perfect for a romantic weekend away. - Beautiful old building full of great rooms, allowing for a very comfy stay. Our room was comfortable and warm, Nice walks from the hotel. We had an excellent 7 course taster menu with wine pairing in the Arboreal restaurant in the evening.
- Karen (8/5): This was an impressive building a location and the food and staff were lovely. We enjoyed our stay thank you - Lovely period property with character and charm. A sense of grandeur to it Probably a bit too quiet for us.(no background music or ambience in the bar area)
- Suzanne (10/5): -
- Kim (8/5): -
- Evan (8/5): Very enjoyable short break. - Excellent selection of all items. Freshly cooked and ideal temperature. As in most hotels, milk in rooms always UHT so spoils taste .
- David (9/5): - Beautiful views, cosy log fires, great food, lovely staff
- Martin (10/5): Birthday getaway - The staff are amazing and so very helpful and cannot do enough for you.
We had the afternoon tea, bought for us as a present. We have had many afternoon teas previously and have to say this was by far the best we have ever had anywhere.
Breakfast was really nice too.
We took our small dog who was spoilt rotten and was given a pot of treats and dog toy to keep.
Will definitely be back
Thanks Martin and Linze Watson
- Shaun (8/5): -
- John (9/5): -
- David (5/5): ok but disappointing in a Fawlety Towers way - location, the building, that some of the staff if raw tried. Breakfast service was dreadful one day - 50 mins between bringing tea and taking the food order "we were very busy 11 tables arrived at the same time" not good enough.
the grill dining experience was disappointing, we ate twice but only as didn't want to make the effort to go out.
never nice to find a previous occupants knickers under the bed
the shower pressure was so poor and little improved after staff had checked it.
external flood lights left on to 2.00 am as this disturbs sleep.
The property needs a manager to drive standards as this is far from a 4 star property but could be with some care.
- Sheila (9/5): Lovely location with exceptional service from the staff. - The staff were welcoming, friendly and efficient. The room was a good size, the bed extremely comfortable and facilities replenished daily. The view from the shared lounge and dining rooms exceptional. The breakfast and evening meals were great. A very minor issue was that the room was hot overnight despite the freezing conditions outside.
- Galina (8/5): Perfect getaway from London to reconnect with the nature. I would recommend this hotel but would rec - We didnât like breakfast at all. We had to wait for 40 min for a waitress to get an order from us and then 40 mins for the breakfast itself.
- Stewart (10/5): -
- Carolyn (8/5): - Location. Staff were very pleasant & helpful.
Good breakfast. Noisy bathroom fan.
- John (8/5): Relaxation. - Location. Views.
- Benke (9/5): Incredible stay! - Loved the whole setting, garden and the building. The room was very comfortable. Dinner at the Grill. Food wasn't as good as everything else.
- Sally (8/5): Friendly country house hotel in stunning location - Clean and comfortable and good value Restaurant food was poor, all five of us had a disappointing meal. Breakfast was better
- Lee (5/5): -
- Paul (7/5): -
- Anya (9/5): -
- J P (8/5): Great, really great hotel. We loved the fine dining night. - Breakfast was very good, just what we needed to start the day. Donât know what you are asking. The hotel is absolutely great.
However, we will not be going again. Pity, really, but my wife is semi disabled and the stairs proved too much. No Lift!!!!!!
- Mike (10/5): - The building is gorgeous inside and out, very pet friendly
- Ellie (9/5): -
- Colin (10/5): Superb, a perfect winter getaway with roaring log fires! - Stunning location, lovely public rooms with roaring fires and the staff were exceptional, the best we have ever encountered on our travels - all were professional, friendly and more then happy to help and in a genuine way. No complaints and we will return.
- Tony (8/5): Lovely staff, location, and building. Very average dinner food. - Good Dinner menus choice poor and food only average.
- Becky (10/5): Staff deserve a raise - We had an unusual stay in that we were supposed to be going for a romantic weekend away and within minutes of arriving were informed one of our kids were poorly. The staff were incredible, moving us to another room where there was more space and setting him up another bed on the floor so we could continue with our weekend away. They made him feel so special, talking to him and asking him about himself. As any parent knows if your child is having a good time then you are too and I couldnât have thanked the staff enough for the care and kindness they showed us all.
- Lynn (10/5): Fantastic place to stay in every way - The building was stunning and very well kept views were lovely It was well kept lovely and warm very welcoming
- A (8/5): -
- John (10/5): Excellent hotel. The location, room, food, staff, all first class - The room whilst on the cosy size was more than adequate being very clean with excellent views.
The breakfasts were excellent. We will definitely return.
- Simon (9/5): -
- Jonathan (9/5): The hotel met our expectations as we agreed with the positive reviews that we had read, we will happily return. - The hotelâs character and ambiance. We enjoyed the trouble staff took to keep all the fires going as we were there during a particularly cold spell. The view towards lake Windermere is superb. Staff were professional and friendly and we enjoyed the food very much. Personally, we did not like the strong smell of bleach in the bathroom after cleaning - it lingered in the room a bit. That is why overall a 9 Rather than a 10.
