- Jackie (10/5): - We stayed in the static caravan behind the pub. 3 friends doing the trek 26 it was perfect. Well kitted out and comfortable. Had a meal in the pub on the Friday night a little pricey but food was excellent. Would recommend and return.
- Steve (10/5): North lakes? Give it a try. - Random choice en route to Carlisle from Sussex.
Cracking pub in a beautiful village.

- John (10/5): Outstanding - Excellent Pub and Hotel, food superb. Staff all attentive and welcoming, room was clean and tidy and bed comfortable. Askham as a village a beautiful place and we will be back in warmer weather to do some walking round here. This was our second visit to this property.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Lvly clean comfortable room. Very friendly helpful staff . Beautiful location . Internal decor a bit tired
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Stayed here to attend a wedding at Askham Hall, fabulous location, easy walking to venue and close to the Lowther Castle if you had time to explore. Staff were warm and welcoming, and breakfast was delicious!
- Jeanne (10/5): - Loved the location. The place oozed old world charm. The staff were friendly and cheerful. The dinner was delicious with the best chips I've had in a long time. The steak and ale pie was very tasty.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Lovely walks in the area and great food. They staff were very friendly
- Verified traveler (4/5): Broken showerhead - accused of breaking it! - The caravan was pretty good overall. Comfortable beds, lots of cupboard space. Mostly clean, apart from the plates in the kitchen, which were all dirty.
The big issue was that the showerhead had been broken. When told, staff said "it wasn't like that before you arrived", which is extremely rude. Plus it was left in such a way that someone clearly knew it was broken. We were paying £100 per night to stay in a caravan and they seriously thought that we'd break a showerhead 2 hours before we needed to leave before our friends wedding?! Luckily they had a spare room that we could shower in. One staff member was appologetic fortunately. The showerhead in the other room looked like it was about to snap off as well! Yet they had the cheek to blame us.
They did fix the shower while they were out at the wedding, which is great, but there was no offer of a free breakfast/drink or money off the bill for inconvenience. Bad customer service if you ask me. They did, however, check our room before we left for any damage, which I've never experienced before! Usually you can just check out straight away.
- Andrew (10/5): Great place in a great location. - Professional, friendly service. Great food and drinks.
- Joe (10/5): Excellant. - Booked for family of 4 for one night. The stay was comfortable and clean
and the staff very friendly. Would definitely recommend and would certainly stay again.
- Tim (10/5): - The rooms were very comfortable, and the pub food was excellent.
- Christopher (8/5): Our stay at Punch Bowl Inn. June 2019 - Staff were really pleasant, helpful and friendly. Two different staff members took time out to oblige my friend with Pool challenges. Had a very sociable evening with owners, staff and locals on our second evening. Food and ales excellent.Quaint touch was the dress makers mannequin in the room which it turned out was for guests for wedding parties to use to get creases out of their outfits.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Great food, comfortable and bright accommodation and a fantastic, polite, welcoming staff.
- Sally (8/5): - Great place to stay.Close to interesting places, great food and very dog friendly.Would have stayed longer if I could .
- Sharon (10/5): - Stayed in one of the caravans and it was lovely very modern had everything you needed staff were very nice would definitely come back and stay in the caravans
- Diane (10/5): Staying at the punch bowl was just great - Lovely location x brilliant for dogs
- Karen (8/5): - More than met expectations for priced paid
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Exceptionally good. Donāt want to add anything else thanks
- Susan (8/5): - Stayed for 1 night. The accommodation was good and fine for a 1 night stay. Would recommend. Clean and adequate accommodation.
- graham (6/5): - the staff were friendly but the food was ok but I felt was over priced for the what you got breakfast didn't start til 0800 and we had to be away by 0730 room was dated and cold and needed re decorating the price was ok wont be staying there again
- Conor (6/5): Could be better. - TV was broken.
Complimentary Bottled water turned out to be reused bottles of water filled up.
Nice Cooked Breakfast.
- Bev (6/5): "Cosy and comfortable accommodation" maybe not! - Very poor value at £90 for a double en-suite with breakfast. The rooms, whilst spacious, are badly in need of total re-decoration and upgrading, have single glazing and limited heating. The least said about the en-suite the better. Breakfast, which had to be selected the night prior, was adequate.
At least the bed was comfortable, the staff friendly and our evening meal was good, but on the whole the experience was disappointing.
- Barry (8/5): Hotel, with good road links for Northern Lakes. - Friendly, helpful staff, food of good standard at fair prices.
Room was clean & bed comfortable with new carpet, however some parts of the room were looking a little tired; windows, curtains & sink in en-suite bathroom but overall a comfortable 2 night stay.
Location was key for us as we had friends staying in nearby Pooley Bridge and we had good road links a mile or two from the quiet village of Askham, Cumbria.
- Nicola (10/5): Lovely little find. - We had a great couple of days at the Punchbowl. We were attending a wedding at Askham Hall and couldn't have picked a better place to stay it took us 1 minute to walk there!
The room was fine, a little bit outdated compared to some of the more modern and swanky hotels, no air con and all the stuff like that but it had a quirky charm that we loved and the bed was so comfy.
The food in the pub is outstanding we had one excellent evening meal and two fabulous cooked breakfasts.
The staff were absolutely delightful, nothing was too much trouble and they always had the time for a chat and a smile!
- Daniel (8/5): Relax and enjoy - Great professional service with a smile .lovely traditional pub in a relaxing country area.good food well cooked and great gin choice !
- Shawna (10/5): Perfect blend of fancy and homey - I would travel back to the Lake District just to stay here again! The staff was the epitome of friendly, helpful, and professional. The room was clean, well furnished, well stocked, and exactly what we wanted when staying in a historic coaching inn. The dining area was comfortable and warm on a cold evening and the service for dinner and breakfast was impeccable. The food was many notches above the pub menus we'd found throughout England. Handmade flavors made British menu standards feel like they'd been prepared in a gourmet kitchen.
As great as all that sounds, it was really the people that made our stay so exceptional. They treated guests with courtesy and propriety, yet at the same time, every new person was a friend they hadn't previously met.
We booked our room as simply a place to stay for the night, but left with some of our best memories during our time in the country.
- Plum (8/5): Good situation & very good food. - Have stayed here from time to time over the past 34 years. Fortunately the place doesn't change! Log fires, good beers & excellent breakfasts (mini packet cereals excluded - more than made up for by the eggs benedict on 30.11.17 as the kippers hadn't arrived).
Currently a very good chef in post.
My only reservation is that like a lot of the stone built inns around the lakes, the heating in the bathrooms often under-performs & this was the case with my bedroom on my recent 2 nights visit. A minor gripe.
- james (10/5): - Yes it was a good stay apart from weather.
- John (8/5): Great hotel in the country - This is our second stay at the Punchbowl and on both occasions we've had a fabulous stay. The inn is located in a charming wee village and is very welcoming. The staff are very friendly & helpful, the room is comfortable, spacious & warm... the food is amazing! There's a great choice of dishes, portions are generous and the standard is 5 star.
- Sean (8/5): Great location for Lowther show - Comfy beds and great room. Great that there was a pool table too ! Although food was average !
- Simon (8/5): A problem dealt with well... - Whilst staying there we had a problem with the plumbing in the bathroom (hence the 'condition' mark). The staff handled this professionally and courteously. As a result, they turned something that could have been a major problem into a demonstration of their customer skills. Hotels/Inns will have problems from time to time outside of their control and it is how they handle these issues that is a true mark of their customer skills; the Punch Bowl was not found wanting. I was impressed!
- Verified traveler (6/5): Many good points but poor room facilities - We booked two rooms, one double room for 2 people and one double room for one person, for 5 nights in mid-June.
Not as enamoured with the place as other reviewers as I thought the room we had was not up to expectations.
The other room was better.
All comments about the room concern the one where 2 people stayed
- Double room but only 2 small hooks the bathroom wall (that came unclipped from their holder twice)
- One single wardrobe split into two such that no section was tall enough to hang long clothes e.g. suit or dress.
- A good size bathroom and shower but nowhere to put stuff except for the rim of the basin or the top of the cistern (though there was plenty of room to put some shelves)
- 4 cushions on the bed but nowhere to put them except on the floor
- a mannequin taking up scarce room in the corner where a coat rack would have been of more use
- A single sash window that could only be propped open by using said cushions or the waste basket
- inconsistent housekeeping e.g. bed made but toilet rolls not replenished; room not serviced at all on one day; everything serviced properly the next
The breakfasts were good but evening meals were no more than adequate ( a definite disappointment after reading other reviews on this site)
- Cath (10/5): Ideal for touring lakes - Room small but clean and adequate for short stay. Location is beautiful and ideal as a base for touring.
- T (10/5): Nice Find - Super room with spacious bathroom.
Lovely meal in the pub.
Friendly and efficient staff.
- Sheila (10/5): Wonderful location in a small village - Lovely few days at Easter good food and attentive staff
- Jim (10/5): Warm & Welcoming - Very nice staff
- Alain (10/5): - I stayed at the Punchbowl Inn yesterday (Wed 15 March) halfway through a short trip to the lakes on my motorbike. What a lovely place. The village is very quiet, and the team at the Inn are really friendly, serving great food, good beer and a totally excellent breakfast at really good prices. Definitely go again. Thanks! Alain
- Verified traveler (10/5): Warm & friendly - Absolutely lovely staff were friendly and attentative. Food was great and if a high standard and the roaring fires were just what you needed after a long cold walk
