Guest Reviews
- denise (10/5): excellent visit-comfortable, clean, great staff - we truly enjoyed our stay and would return again. Great breakfasts, dinners, onsen. Great quick access to backcountry ski trailheads.
- kara (10/5): Wonderful location on the slopes of a quaint small ski lift, great staff, food and cleanly renovated Japanese onsen hote - The best attribute of this lovely, newly renovated Osen Hotel is the staff. They truly care about your stay, ask how things are and go out of their way at the latest hours to pick you up in a snow storm. The chef at the hotel is amazing and cooks home style and unique food. The osen is nice and hot and small enough to had good water turnover and privacy.
- Jeffrey (9/5): - The location is excellent. The staff is very nice. The room is very clean and the onsen is wonderful. The food, especially the dinner, is amazing. Love the free drinks and snacks as well.
- Momchil (6/5): - Great location. Traditional japan-style room. Nice onsen inside the hotel. Problems: no running water in the morning; it was not possible to have food in the restaurant unless paid in advance (no chance to add at the place)
- Ben (2/5): Motel 6 quality Hilton Prices. - The location was great for skiing. That's about the only positive. I wish I had more positive to say. I hate giving poor reviews and tend to be understanding when things go amiss. But this place is like staying at a Motel 6 and paying the price of Hilton Hotel.
Place is in need of some TLC. Window was broken in hotel room. Snow wasn't cleared off anywhere. The outdoor onsen was closed. The hotel RAN OUT OF WATER both days we were staying there (they had a water truck come fill temporary, but then that ran out too). Couldn't use the toilets because of that. The public bath was not cleaned and was gross. I'm hesitant to say the staff wasn't friendly, because I think they were just frustrated about the water situation and I'm guessing other guests kept asking them what was going on and they had to repeat themselves. Oh, and a majority of the vending machine items were sold out (I don't really mind that however it seemed par for the course for this hotel so I'll mention it here). It was also cold enough to require layers in the lounge and hallways, though the rooms were warm.
100% loved the skiing in the area. Next time I would stay at a different lodge up here or stay in town then drive the 25 minutes up mountain to ski.
- Anders (10/5): - Fantastiskt läge för skidåkning Kudden
- Kirk (8/5): Awesome location for backcountry skiing and experiencing traditional onsen and lodging - More variety of food to include some western dishes
- Hiu Fu (4/5): -
- Shinji (10/5): -
- Sasa Jiesha (8/5): - It’s a traditional onsen hotel, which although is old but well kept. Dinner and breakfast both very good traditional Japanese style. Dont expect the WiFi to work.
- David (7/5): Two nights would have been better than three. - The window opened to get cool air quietly at night, but some bugs got through the screen. Onsen was wonderful. Same exact dinner three nights in a row. Manager was rude before we checked in. There was no elevator.
- Jae Hee (9/5):
- Elly Sabrina (7/5): Could be a better stay if counter staff was more helpful - We came when there was a heatwave in Hokkaido so it was a nice change to be up in the mountains surrounded by misty clouds . Rather run down . We arrived earlier at about 2 pm . There was noone at the reception counter and there was no other guests around checking in . We had to wait an hour before someone came to the counter to check us in .
- Carol (9/5): Superb - Everything! Rooms are spacious and comfortable; the onsen is very beautiful, with view on the sunset Nothing. Just remember to bring your own food as there are no shops nearby; however, the stay sells instant food and snacks
- Angela (10/5): - Clean and comfortable. Staff are friendly and helpful. Meals are delicious. The onsen is amazing.
- Bonnett (10/5): Unreal food, location, facility, and staff. 10/10 - The food was extraordinary and the all-wood onsen is unique, free beer in the lounge, ship-shape room, and free shuttle bus from kamifurano. Do not miss dinner or breakfast here.
- William (8/5): Very good -
- Jingwen (7/5): Good - Great location, hospitality, and nice traditional style experience The cleanness can improve.
- Ed (6/5): Pleasant - The food was excellent, but it would have been nice if the dinners were not all on repeat. I have stayed here in the past and each dinner was a new, wonderful experience. This time dinner was exactly the same every night. Also, they used to offer a beer or saki with dinner, now that costs extra. It is really nice that they have free beer and whiskey highballs in the lounge in the evenings, that is new and a really nice touch and allows for conversation with the other guests.
The very best thing about this place is that you can put your ski boots on in the lobby and ski right from the front door. All of the staff were wonderful and friendly except for the awful, grumpy morning front desk guy. No service with a smile from him, ever. He really needs to find a new occupation other than in hospitality. We arrived early for our 3 day stay and the front office guy would not let us in the door, much less drop off bags. We had to plead to use a restroom. Why is using the hot spring not included in the room price? That seems petty after all we were spending to stay there. I had questions regarding meals and other things asked through the booking.com site that went unanswered. I even called the Booking.com people to ask for me, yet the questions went unanswered. In the past at this place one could purchase a bag lunch, that is no longer an option. Rooms are good for no more than two people even though they allow up to four.
- Abigail (5/5): This place was fine. It was pricier than a lot of other places I stayed for worse food and amenities. - Location is great, onsen was nice Rooms were small and food was mediocre for the price, which was high. The common lounge area was not very comfortable.
- Trevor (10/5): Amazing place in beautiful location - Kamihoroso is set in a stunning location. The food is excellent, the rooms comfortable and the onsen is fantastic. The staff are also very helpful and friendly, will definitely be coming back here.
- James (9/5): Superb -
- Roger (10/5): Going back next year - Really friendly staff, great location, incredible food, very nice onsen. The apres ski lounge has beer on tap, the local bus stopped here. A ski work bench in the basement would be nice
- Won Kwee (10/5): - Like the onsen.
- Omri (10/5): If you are looking for a real Ryokan, this is the place for you! - Really nice and traditional ryokan, in one of the most beautiful parks in Hokkaido!
Staff was absolutely amazing, helpful, and went out of their way to make our stay enjoyable!
Rooms are big and very spacious, and the onsen is very nice aswell.
Also had a nice lounge with free snacks and drinks!
- Peter (9/5): Superb -
- Tsz (9/5): will visit next time - both dinner and breakfast are delicious, the snacks bar outside the onsen is excellent
- Rumie (8/5): Quiet hidden natural hot spring hotel - Good Onsen
Free rest room which offers free drinks and snacks
There were microwave, ice, cutleries for free
- Stuart (9/5): Superb - Vintage structure and well maintained Refill of beer at the lounge take a while
- Yat man (10/5): - Great
- Lina (1/5): Bad - Our group of 6 had to leave one night in advance due to the bad location and old facility. The food were lacking compared to other osen hotels. Some rooms did not have showers. We had to carry our own lugagge up and down the stairs. There were no staff at the front desk at night and the doors were not locked. We did not feel safe staying there. They did not issue any refund even though we did not eat the meals for the second day which were included in the price. They were not surprised we wanted to leave one day early. I suppose this happens all the time and they are used to this.
- Daniil (3/5): Poor - View from the onsen is nice, some beautiful places to hike around. Think twice if you're considering staying there, that's why:
1) Although my payment at booking.com already included the hot springs tax, I was charged again on the spot, and the sum anyway was 5 times more than it should be, 500 JPY instead of 100. I've realized it just now, when check-in my booking before writing the review.
2) The hotel's descriptions stated there is a free shuttle service provided. However, I was told, it was available neither on my arrival nor departure day. And I see other reviews here mentioning no free transfer was provided. It makes me doubt if the free shuttle service exists at all.
3) Another misleading part of the description is the restaurant. When coming there to have some dinner, I was told that if my booking has no meal included, I can't just order something and pay of it. So there is no restaurant in a regular meaning of this word, when you can come, choose some food from the menu and order it. It is rather catering service for some guests than a normal restaurant.
- Crystal (8/5): Excellent choice for a relaxing getaway - Traditional Japanese-style room with serene ambiance No elevator
- Karen (4/5): Disappointing - Location and onsen where very good. Big room Description on Booking.com very misleading. It implied that dinner and breakfast were included ( as they were at another ryokan we stayed at in the area). Upon checking in we were told it was room only. I showed them the Booking.com description and they said it was a Booking.com problem.
We were told we couldn’t add breakfast or dinner as they only had means to provide for quests who had pre-booked it. There are no options to eat out nearby by so we had to buy microwaveable instant noodles and curry from their lobby store for out breakfast and dinner.
Big place, long dormitory-like corridors . Lacked atmosphere
- Franziska (10/5): Perfect stay in the mountains - Real Japanese hotel, so nice and friendly staff. It was perfect, thank you so much! Very nice Onsen and incredible views down to the valley.
- Robert (8/5): Pleasant, though maybe not too vegetarian friendly. - Large and very well presented dinner and breakfast. Good room. Enjoyed the free drinks and snacks after dinner. I messaged the accommodation to advise we don't eat meat. This message was not passed on, as we arrived to dinner to have wagu beef in front of us.
- Marie (10/5): Exceptional -
- Verified traveler (10/5): Underrated. Great food. - The hotel is pretty old but was clean and comfortable. Staff was friendly and the onsen was nice. Was really wowed by the quality of the meals that were served (dinner, breakfast) since the dining area looks pretty utilitarian.
- Henry (8/5): Comfortable stay - The meals were well prepared, staff are helpful and friendly Room is a bit small for four people, three will be perfect
- Chris (8/5): Very good - excellent
- Chin (8/5): Would be perfect if there were meals offered and a shuttle bus. - View of Mt. Tokachi from our Japanese styled room. Family friendly Ryokan. The tradition styled wooden onsen with the open aired option had a great view of the mountains!
They provided Yukata and slippers in child sizes which was great!
Felt nostalgic, as some of the furniture like the safe was from the 80s-90s. (1)There was no dinner and breakfast available. We had to buy the 200 yen per cup noodle for our dinner. We checked out at 10am to take the cab which was about 7000 yen to JR Naka Furano Train Station. Where we bought food from the 7-eleven.
(2) No shuttle buses up to where this Ryokan is. Hence, spent 9000+7000 yen just for the cab up and down.
(3) The free wifi was not working.
- Joshua (3/5): Very disappointing - + Nice Onsen baths
+ Great location - Dilapidated building
- stained walls and generally poor cleanliness
- rude staff (towards foreigners)
- unbecoming for a ryokan, absolutely subpar, nonexistent service
- overpriced
- Verified traveler (8/5): -
- Miriam (8/5): we would go again - We stayed for two nights, had a cute room and the onsen is very nice!
- GC (8/5): - Great place with great view, clean, plenty of parking space, yet it starts to show its age.
- Laurent (10/5): Great stay at Kamihoroso, for the second time - For the second time, we came to this place, for a whole week. Ideally situated if you want to ski tour, it is a quiet place with great food, and very nice onsen.
Rooms are clean but a bit small when you come with all your ski gear (we were 4 adults in one room). There is also a large room in the basement to store skis, dry boots, skis, jackets...
Every evening, we got a really good dinner (many courses).
All together, this makes this place ideal!
