Guest Reviews
- Charles (8/5): - The amenities of the property are great. The single bedroom rooms have an unusual layout. They also have adjoining doors to another unit. The occupants were loud and we could here every conversation because the adjoing door does not close shut very well. Still enjoyed the time there.
- Julie (8/5): - Nice property, but dated. The kitchen is small but very well stocked. Comfortable bed. The staff was very friendly and helpful.
- Tracy (8/5): Great hotel, just don't eat at the restaurant - We had an amazing time overall. The amenities are great. The beach view was amazing. The only recommendation for change that I have to the hotel is: either lower your restaurant/food prices or make the food a better quality. The food was the worst I had on our entire vacation (through Myrtle Beach and through Asheville north carolina) and by far the most expensive meal we had on our vacation. Quality either needs to increase or price needs to decrease. Would definitely not recommend eating at the restaurant!! Everything else was fantastic. Friendly front staff, and good trip overall -aside from the restaurant.
- Michael (6/5): - We loved the location allowing us to visit several hiking trails and dining. Only negatives were the upstairs living room, sort of useless, and the limited hot water, couldn't fill the roman tub. Overall, we felt comfortable.
- Michael (10/5): - The only problem that we had was the first unit they sent us to was not ready. The bed wasn’t made, the patio to the balcony was open, and there were spiders in the jacuzzi tub. But when staff was notified they rectified the problem. Other than that minor minor and yes I meant to say it twice because it wasn’t horrible. But other than that we had a marvelous time. We will be coming back. It will be me and my woman’s getaway spot. Thanks again!!!!!
- Karen (8/5): Great Resort - Great pla, lots of amenities. Didn’t have time to take advantage of all they offered. Next time. Golf, horseback riding, exercise facility, tennis etc…..
- vrijomtezingen (10/5): Excellent Resort / not without disapointment - My husband and I stayed for 7 days, and there are many amazing things to share. Firstly, the location is superb. Secondly, the resort, though in need of renovations within the next 5 years, is still in great condition, clean, with amazing beds, and the rooms are as described and well-stocked! The front desk was exceptional. I can't say enough great things about the front desk customer service, and the late-night check-in was a breeze. Everything was explained to us perfectly. Honestly, the only feedback I have is that the employees at the Recreation Center and the Community Center need training in customer service. We felt like we were intruders rather than guests; we felt judged, questioned, and unwelcome. There were a few friendly faces, but overall, it was a terrible experience every time we went to the swimming pool, workout facilities, putt-putt golf, or arcade room. The facility, though also in need of renovation, was overall well-maintained and clean. It was purely the customer service at the Rec and Community Center that was lacking. I recommend organizing required customer service training for all employees. I even overheard employees gossiping and complaining about their colleagues, which was highly unprofessional. The employees also appeared to be very unhappy, so it could be an issue with the management of the Rec Center. The resort gets 5 stars, while the Recreation Center and Community Center get 1 star for customer service!
- Timothy (8/5): Mis-communication. All of our fears. - Great place. Clean and nick folks. There was a lapse in the communications between hotels.com and the facility. I had a hard time confirming my reservation as they could
Not find it. (I made a back-up reservation using another service). When I arrived they finally were able to communicate with Hotels and confirmed my reservation. This was time consuming and very unsettling.
- cmecamp (6/5): First & last - Nice location , but so many negatives . It starts with the photos on the web site , that picture of the lake with the large granite face is not even on site , it's a mile up the road. The units are 1970s dated & they are split units , so if you get a 1 bed suit , it's in the front door and down the steps under the 2 bed unit . The disclaimers that the frontdesk rattled off were ridiculous , we don't manage this & we don't manage that . Bs , your name is on the front sign, so you have a say in it . We were there during the rains that lead up to hurricane Helaena , no one came to or called us to advice us of the rising water at the stream that basically traps you in , thankfully we left at 4am when we could still get out , water at that point was 18 to 24 inches high driving thru . Condition of the unit was sad , don't tell me to call maintenance if I have an issue , do your damn job , walk the units and get crap fixed before people arrive . Very discussed with the entire trip
- W5052ZLjessica (10/5): Clean and Cozy! - Our family had a wonderful time at Sapphire Valley Resort. The condo was clean and all the amenties you could need. We loved the wood burning fireplace and just how relaxing it was! The beds were so comfy and the black out drapes made you want to sleep the entire day away.
At the rec center the indoor hot tubs and wet sauna were a hit! We also enjoyed the table tennis and mini golf! The location is wonderful if you are interested in exploring nearby waterfalls! In our opinion the Skiing was not worth the expense but there is so much more to do you wont miss it! We look forward to returning in the future.
- mikebevmills (8/5): Great location... decent units - It was a nice stay... unit backed up on a small forest and deer wandered through one day. Good proximity to Highlands and other small towns. Nice for a get-away, kick-back week! The only drawback was that the unit was on two levels... got a lot of stair climbing in during the week.
- RMSaintL (10/5): Candid and honest review from Wyndham timeshare owners: Update from 2018 - The Sapphire Valley area and the Western North Carolina mountains are a bucket list destination if you love the outdoors. The mountains really do "call you home." The area offers opportunities for new adventures each day of the week. There is something different to do every day. The views from the boathouse at Lake Fairfield are amazing. Take a bottle of wine and sit on the beach or the deck area watching the sun set and it will suck you in and force you to relax. We found this to be true of numerous publicly accessible areas. The waterfalls in the area are magnificent. There are hiking trails for every level of experience.
The roads leading up to the mountains are winding single lanes roads with a series of switchback turns that make it a blast to drive if our are an adventurous driver. The drive offers endless spectacular views.
We are Wyndham Vacation owners and we have stayed on this property numerous times over the years. The property is an older resort and it is pretty well maintained. However, it does need some TLC and updating. Not a ding, just an observation. This location's decor is rooted in the rustic mountain genre. However, unlike most Wyndham timeshares it presents as if it is still caught in the late 1980s or early 1990s era. The kitchens, TVs, and IT items are modern and worked great for us. We have stayed in other units in the past and we have found that that the kitchens present with everything one will need if you elect to cook/eat in. Our stay on this occasion was in a 1-BR lock-off in a "suite" type unit. Read on....
The beds were conformable. We slept well. The only knock on the sleeping arrangements is that we found that the only units that offer a king size bed are the 1-BR suite section of the 2-BR lock-off units. The suite is the lower unit of the lock off.
If you book the lower unit lock-off suite be aware that the layout is peculiar and has very limited daylight due to layout and window placement. The upper seating area has a window and the bedroom has a walk-out slider to a small balcony. That is about it for direct views to the outside. The kitchen and eat in area is on the interior aspect of the unit and looks through a window into the soaking tub which in turn has a picture window exposed to the outdoors. We found this to be odd.
In the same lower unit unit, the Pullman kitchen offers very little food preparation and cooking areas and no oven of any kind. The two burner cook top was small and we found this to be a detractor. Your cooking choices are limited to either boiling or frying (or using the charcoal grills, no gas grills on the site).
The bathroom in this unit is a good size. However, that said and fair warning, if you are a person of large diameter girth you may have an issue fitting into the shower stall. The shower stall is approximate 32" x 36". We found the shower to be a squeeze and we are both under average weight with athletic build body types.
If you book the lower level unit we suggest that you pack your ear plugs if you want an undisturbed night's sleep. The floors and walls are thin. The floors above us unforgivingly squeaked and thumped. We were keenly aware of every step that our upstairs neighbors took. From the excitement of when the college football team they support had good/bad play right up to their midnight visit to the bathroom or refrigerator (we could follow their path to/from their destination).
There are numerous local places for dining out. Keep in mind if you travel "off season" that the local places shut down at early hours and often close on a whim when business drops off. We suggest that you call ahead and have a back up plan whenever you go out to dine.
We dined in numerous locations in the Asheville, Highlands, and Cashiers area. A must visit eating opportunity in Highlands is Don Leon's. It is off the main street area (not in walking distance) but worth the short trek. Ironically, our favorite meal was at a restaurant and gas station in Glenville. The Local is a family run small hole in the wall. Quite the find. The menu and bar selection is limited. We sampled numerous items off the menu. The portions were generous and everything was loaded with flavor. It has a family atmosphere and a play area for the kids and an outdoor eating area in the kid's play area.
The local executive 9-hole course offers a week long package that cannot be beat. The course was well maintained and was fun to play.
- 03Mikme (6/5): What’s going on Wyndham? - We are Wyndham owners. Although our vacation was booked months in advance, we received no confirmation letter as is customary with Wyndham. After a 10 hour drive to the resort, we arrived at the address 70 Sapphire Blvd which turned out the be Wynham Resorts Mountain Laurel Villas. We were directed to return to Hilton Grand Vacations/Fairways Forest at 3077 Hwy 64E. There is no mention of Wyndham at this place. They have “inventory” at this location. This was quite confusing and unnecessarily time consuming. I appreciated Tammy’s patience. On the posittive side, our one bedroom deluxe accommodations were newly refurbished and beautiful. I woukd think twice about renting here if I were a parent as the Rec Center, the lake etc. are quite a distance from the lodgings and require transportation. The power was out at much of the resort today closing both the rec center and Sapphire Mountain Brewery on the property.
- J7318EFrobertf (10/5): Excellent late season getaway - Spent two weeks here starting mid August to get some cooler tempts (10-12 degrees cooler on average than Coastal South Carolina). Stayed at the Mountain Laurel section of the resort which is in easy walking distance to most amenities including activities center, fitness center, ski and tubing slopes, dog parks, tennis courts and golf course. Even has a quarter mile paved track great for walking. This was our second time here. Last summer we stayed at the Fox Hunt section of the resort. About a two mile drive from the main campus but larger units. Besides the amenities at the resort, there are many opportunities for hiking and waterfall viewing throughout the surrounding area. We made side trips to Brevard and Cherokee both about one hour drive away. Also, the town of Highlands is only about 15 minutes away and has good shopping places.
- SkiBug5 (8/5): Interesting set up - The unit we stayed in was interesting in that you enter from the top and take stairs down into the living space. We were next to the ski resort that is easily walkable. We saw the snowmakers from our window and went to explore. We did not make use of the facilities, but did some hiking in the area before we traveled on.
- Lindseypoloronis (4/5): Lady at the front desk is rude. Advertise a hot tub but leave out kids cant use it. The pool is “heated” but freezing!! - So annoyed!! We bought 5 units with 4 different families (8 kids). We were excited to explore the property and take advantage of the amenities on property. The older lady at the front desk was extremely rude. Our kids are kids, but pretty well behaved. They were quiet and not running around everywhere but the lady kept walking around and looking in the window at us.
After a long day of exploring the town, we took the kids to the pull. We honestly didnt read the signs (we play travel ball and stay at hotels 3+ times a month so we know hotel pool rules) there were cameras everywhere so we were kn our best behavior. The older lady kept looking in the window and you could tell she was mad. She came in (with back up) and firmly told us to “read the signs” and that kids 14 and older were not allowed in the hot tubs. I explained that with toddlers, and the pool being freezing, we really hoped to use the hot tub. I also told her that the rule should be advertised because we literally chose this resort over others because there was a hot tub. Some of our kids are small and the arent crazy about a big COLD pool. As she was walking out I said “well can we get some towels” and she again, firmly replied “yes but you have to return them when you leave” like we were going to steal the towels or something.
The “back up” stayed behind and she was nice. She explained their crappy rule and stated that she was sorry. I will add that the hit tub was warmer than my kids bath water...
Bottom line, one: you do not have to treat your guests like fugitives, and two: advertising ALL rules, stupid ones included. And three: we love the area but we WILL NOT be staying here again!
- 2travelOhio (10/5): Great location for exploring the area! - We stayed in a one bedroom condo in the Mountain Laurel Villas. The unit was very clean and has been recently updated with new flooring and furniture. It was spacious and very quiet. We enjoyed staying in the heart of this beautiful area, being close to Brevard, Cashiers, and Highlands. We rented a kayak and kayaked on Sapphire Lake and hiked to many of the beautiful waterfalls in this area. The staff was helpful in suggesting hikes we should not miss. There is so much to do in and near this resort. We stayed a week but look forward to returning again soon.
- rogerc699 (8/5): The mountains were great - The location was great - in the mountains near a lake and beautiful places to walk. The resort feels old although clean. We expected a quiet, relaxed vacation and got that for the most part.
The unit was closed in and not comfortable to hang out in. There was a community center that was open with many windows and places to comfortably sit outside. Also, the pool was included and clean.
Most everything else was expensive. Nice activities available around town. Just expect to spend more on activities and eating that you did on the room.
I loved the mountains and the Sapphire Valley area is great. I hope to come back, but I may choose a different resort.
- 395sueh (8/5): Beautiful Area - OK. First off I don’t know why this is called a ski resort. There is one very small hill with one run. That said I love the area. The complex is set up like a ski resort with a lodge, recreation center, a playground, snack bar and very good nearby restaurants. There is local horseback riding, mining and hiking. It is about an hour from Great Smoky MT NP. and very close to Gorges State Park and an hour and a half from Asheville, NC.
The resort itself has nice rooms and the units are set in pretty wooded areas. We were in a Mountain Laurel unit. The rooms are clean and comfortable. There are two bedrooms with king sized beds and two pull out sofas. It has a full kitchen (cabinets could be updated but that is being picky), a jacuzzi, and multiple TV’s. Check in was friendly and no timeshare pressure even offer. Very refreshing.
- Companion619491 (10/5): Just what the doctor ordered - Ready to go back!!! We had an amazing stay at Club Wyndham Resort at Fairfield Sapphire Valley. Michelle at the front desk really knows the meaning of customer service. She was so pleasant and helpful. The 2 bedroom unit was perfect for our family. My kids loved that it was a 2-story unit and they had the 2nd floor all to themselves. The grounds are well kept and the ski area was just steps away from our door. Saving the best for last, the waterfalls!!!! Dry Falls was our favorite but never imagined we'd have so many beautiful waterfalls nearby. Will definitely be back.
- H4869XGscotts (10/5): Excellent Accommodations - Great location and excellent accommodations. Plenty of room and back deck overlook. The resort had an excellent restaurant right down the hill from the villa. The food was great and they even had live music one night out side. Great place to get away from it all.
- CJwork (6/5): We are Wyndham owners-ok but a lot of room for improvement - Room fine, very clean. BE WARE! Activity center IS NOT owned by Wyndham. Many us the advertised items are at an additional cost. Wyndham denies knowledge and no coordination between the two. Much misinformation. Recommended they work together but seem not to care. Nice location and playground and walking track.
- bonniebU1767RC (4/5): What Incompetence! - Never rec'd an arrival info enail. Called and were told we not staying at Wyndham, but a complety different resort where we were required to pay $21 per day for the privilege of using pool, fitness center, (eventho these are closed), internet and golf discount. No one mentioned this at time of reservation nor before I had to call the day before arrival. It was a 2 day back n forth w/Wyndham being told we were not required to pay extra $170/were required. We did not buy into a resort club to have this lack of tact, lack of information & policy from every agent involved. Total chaos!!!
- brw00d (2/5): Step back to the 60s. - This is an OLD property that has not been updated in a very long time . No internet, but it did have a flat screen TV. Boring but beautiful area. Good mattress and only 1 golf course open to the public, and a 9 hole executive course which was fun. We will not return to this area.
- drgrantpowell (8/5): Fabulous fall foliage, falls tour! - We rendezvoused with friends from other states in SapphireValley for several days, enjoying beautiful autumn foliage, hiking and touring the areas wonderful water falls. Our accomodations at Wyndham Resort at Fairfield Sapphire Valley were excellent as we were all able to stay together and enjoy the resorts many amenities.
- dave2278 (10/5): Mountain winter getaway - While the condos can use some serious updating, overall the experience was great. We knew we would arrive late (after 7pm) and the office would be closed. We followed the instructions and had zero issues. The property is beautiful, yet not much to do. However, this is expected if you're looking to get away from the touristy-type stuff. Very cute little town, beautiful views, friendly people. As a Wyndham owner and having stayed at multiple properties in the mountains, beaches, middle-of-nowhere, we've never had half the issues some other reviews state. Most of the time, these are not "all-inclusive-resorts" and you should be aware of that and set your expectations as such. Having the snow tubing and skiing onsite was quite convenient. Fun for our daughters. It would not be fair to compare this to Colorado, Utah, etc.. You're in the Blue Ridge Mountains and you get what you get. If you're looking to get away and enjoy the scenery, slower pace and like the small-town vibe, definitely make a trip here.
- Z7190WKjeremyp (2/5): Lady at Rec Center ruined it - This review wouldve probably been a 4 star of based solely on facilities, cleanliness, and price BUT the lady at rec center was so unpleasant of a human being and seemed to have it out for my young family (most people staying there were much older) that it negatively impacted the rating that much. God forbid someone under 14 years old take a dip in hot tub under parent supervision. This lady made it her life mission to scold my kid and then hang around and make sure she didnt go back in. Keep in mind there were no other patrons around, no horseplay, we were quiet. Terrible hospitality. Retirement home vibe and dont go here if you are under that age group. You won't be welcome here. We even left early to go somewhere else where we were welcomed and not watched like hawks by workers with too much time on hands
- Verified traveler (8/5): Great location - We loved the location. The unit was 2 floors, which we were not warned about, no handicap access. It was dated, but that really didn't matter to us because there was so much to do there we didn't spend much time in the room. The room was not soundproof because there was a bedroom over our bedroom and we could hear every little movement! It was clean and the kitchen was well equipped.
- SBF (8/5): Nice mountain get away with room accomidations - My husband and I wanted a get away from the kids to the NC mountains to enjoy the fall foliage and temps. So glad that we chose this place! Driving in you could tell there was lots to do and the property looked nice. Candace at check-in was so friendly, warm and informative. I had called her the day before to request early check in and she had our place available hours before check in time.
I had read many reviews on here about this resort so I knew many found the interior to be dated. It was. It was very 1980s/90s but honestly, the size of the place and layout more than made up for this! We had a two bedroom. I was expecting a small condo with kitchenette. This place went on and on! A master bedroom with king sized bed, kitchen, nice living room with wood burning fire and porch with chairs. Then to my surprise, there was a secondary sitting room with TV, stairs that went down to another bathroom, kitchenette and king bed master. As well as a hot tub room!
The beds were super comfy and had new bedding. The place was very clean. The kitchens were well equipped had I wanted to cook while there. Brand new Cuisinart small appliances were downstairs and upstairs.
While it was just my husband and I this time we decided that the size of the accommodations and and the amenities and activities on the grounds were perfect for the whole family, so I look forward to coming back with the kids and checking out the skiiing/tubing in the winter.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Peaceful escape - Great time relaxing away from home. Plenty to keep you entertained if looking for something to do and peaceful enough if that's all you want to do.
- Ell (8/5): - Nice facility. A little dated, but kept up. Would return. Good value for the money.
- Smith Family (10/5): In the Smokey Mountains - Excellent condo for the price. Had a lot of room, we are definitely going back. Downside was farther out then expected. Neighbors said saw two bears right down from condo night before check-out around 7pm. But we missed it.
- Verified traveler (10/5): The unit had 2 floors for some privacy. - The units are very well maintained and had no problems.
- Bill (10/5): Great Hotel - The only thing negative that I can say is that when we arrived about 8:30, the hotel was closed. We had to go to another nearby hotel and they advised us that as the mountain community where the hotel is located is so small and remote, everyone goes home at 5:00 and that you have to go to the police department to check in.
I found the police department with no issues and checked in with the dispatcher and she gave me the number to the lock box where I got the keys.
Other than that, the hotel was clean and we had a nice balcony with a beautiful view and overall it was a 9.5 out of 10.
I would highly recommend this place and I will go back again.
