Guest Reviews
- Sachiko (10/5): - Enjoyed our private onsen time and having 3 options of outdoor hot springs. Loved our large room with the view of the stream, greenery and the birds singing. We were also happy with the Yukata options at the hotel. Ice cream bar was delicious. Japanese breakfast buffet was impressive! This was the best Kagaonsen experience for me and my friends.
- Dylan (6/5): - This ryokan is very dated and in dire need of a refresh. The facilities are not what you would expect from a top end facility in a spa town. The public bath (men’s) felt decades old with soap/salt staining and old fittings. The private baths were a good facility/idea.
Most corridors apart from the main lobby area had an unpleasant smell (musty, mouldy). Our room also faintly had this whiff.
The staff are great - polite and efficient. Breakfast was good.
The free snacks, sale, ice cream buffets were a good idea but don’t expect them to be top quality.
The shuttle was handy. And the ryokan is well situated, a short walk away from charming Yamanaka town.
Unfortunately I could not recommend this as a place until it has had a make-over.
- Olaf (4/5): - One can feel the spirit of the beautiful design but the hotel needs a deep renovation.
- Jlee1129 (10/5): Nice little gem with friendly service - It’s a hidden gem in Yamanaka Onsen area.
Staffs at front desk were all very helpful and friendly. Same as staffs at the restaurant who were the BEST that we have met during our trip this time. They are genuine and amicable, made our stay more enjoyable.
The outdoor onsen was good, as well as the little activities for guests to play.
Close to the river where we can enjoy the nature as well.
- RosemaryN670 (6/5): Great food but not great stay - We booked the Japanese style room and was quite disappointed with the room.
Firstly, it was a nice room with a river view on level 2 but we were unable to open the window at all, as there wasn't an insect mesh that stopped the insects from flying in. This is totally impractical, given the fact that the room is facing the river and a forest.
Secondly, the room was extremely dusty as we can see dust flying under the white lights that they have in the central of the room. And there was 4 handprints on one of the wooden beam across the room that looked like a scene from a horror movie. The bathroom stall was also mouldy and had a foul smell.
The private outdoor onsen wasn't great as well as it was late at night with limited visibility and there was only 1 shower stall which was located outdoor even though the onsen was meant for 3 to 4 pax. Thus, one will need to shower outdoor in the cold weather before entering the onsen.
However, the hotel provided welcome drinks upon arrivals and there was also a nice push cart that offered freeflow snacks for guests. The kaiseki dinner and breakfast was also delicious and well prepared. They also provided child friendly set meals.
Overall, great food but not that great a stay.
- Verified traveler (10/5): -
- Verified traveler (4/5):
- Verified traveler (10/5): -
- Verified traveler (10/5): - 3
- Verified traveler (10/5): Yamanaka Onsen -
- Verified traveler (10/5): Nice stay with family - Had a nice stay with my family here. The service was amazing - we got lots of support on various things on our trip, which we really appreciated since we didn't speak Japanese otherwise. We enjoyed the quiet and romantic atmosphere and the meals were good quality.
- Verified traveler (6/5): -
- Jill_Chong (6/5): Decent enough for 1 night stay - We were warmly welcomed to the hotel and received good service throughout. The room had a lovely view of the river and was very quiet and peaceful. Hot spring was average, but they have an outdoor hot spring which was small but a nice experience. Dinner and breakfast was good, we were very stuffed.
Our biggest issue was that the room stunk of cigarette smoke (even though we asked for a non-smoking room) and no air purifier to be seen. It was so bad that the next day after we had checked out and left, our clothes and hair still smelled of smoke. That truly spoiled our stay and we were glad to be out of there after only one night.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - International And friendly
- NiLuh123 (8/5): Family visit in Kaga - We were happy with the stay and with the room and staff. As noted by other travelers.. this stay is a little out there.. the town Yamanaka is quaint.. with surprisingly not a lot of places to eat.. and we weren’t that excited about their breakfast menu. If you after an Onsen experience a bit out there.. it’s great.. if you are hoping to explore Ishikawa Prefecture than it will add an extra hour drive time to your stay.

- Verified traveler (6/5): -
- Verified traveler (10/5):
- Verified traveler (10/5): -
- Verified traveler (10/5):
- Krjosey (10/5): Couldn’t have asked for a better place to stay! - We booked a room with a private Onsen at this hotel to celebrate our 33 wedding anniversary. What a fabulous place to stay! Well located but in a quiet area on the river away from most of the other hotels. Staff were fabulous and very friendly! English language staff speakers were there. From the welcome tea and traditional sweets to the greeting in the car park and delicious dinner and breakfast, this hotel did not disappoint! The private Onsen with additional footpath did not disappoint! Huge room! Separate bedroom and sitting room! We were given a special present for our anniversary as well! We will definitely return here! What an amazing hotel in an amazing piece of the country. Thankyou for making our anniversary a very special one!
- Verified traveler (8/5):
- Verified traveler (6/5):
- Verified traveler (8/5):
- Verified traveler (8/5): -
- Katharine (10/5): Clean, Curteous, and Kind - We decided to stay in a traditional room and it was a great experience. The food was a large variety and well presented. The room was cleaned twice a day and the staff was fluent in English. The local area was touristy with lots to do.
- Verified traveler (10/5): -
- Vivien (6/5): Love Japan - Tatami mattress was thin. Need double layer to sleep on. Dinner not as good as other ryokans that i have been to.
Staff very friendly.
- Cheok Kuan (10/5): - The hotel is a bit dated but other than that, the overall experience is good. Staffs are friendly and very welcoming. Wifi is okay and provided inside the hotel area. The room size is good and clean. We had reserved the room with both dinner and breakfast which are of good quality.
The hotel is close to Kukasenkei which is famous in that area. The walk along the Kukasenkei is pleasant and the scenery is good. Despite there are more new hotels built in the main town area, I would still prefer this particular one as it is more quiet and off the traffic.
- Verified traveler (6/5): -
- Verified traveler (6/5): Smell ! - Good location with walking distance to town. The room smell old and possible it was a smoking room. Not a nice place to stay overall.
- anzoel (8/5): Total Relaxation! - We were picked from Kagaonsen Station by the free shuttle and in 20 minutes we were being welcomed in true Japanese fashion to the resort. We booked one of the luxury suites with private spa.It was certainly spacious, clean and very comfortable. Great views and super quiet location.
The resort was not too busy so there was always a sense of calm. Breakfast and dinner were enjoyable and the service generally was excellent. Thank you Ola and Kuba!!
Considering the size of the suite with full Japanese breakfast and dinner the price was realistic comparing to other luxury hotels.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Many international staffs working in this hotel. This would be helpful for foreign tourists, but the facilities are old and not maintained well. Restaurant staffs were not very nice. Food was OK, but not appropriate for the price... If I were asked, I would not come back to this hotel again.
- Verified traveler (10/5):
- H K Vincent (8/5): - Very nice open air Onsen!
- Verified traveler (8/5): Remotely located but good meals & service. - Ryokan is remotely situated but nice setting and most rooms facing the river . Either you drive Day time to locate the place or arrange for transport . Meals are good and service is attentive.
- Steve_Sin (8/5): Quiet, Comfortable, outstanding room - Yamanakaonsen, Kaga. Located about 20 mins drive from JR station. Free shuttle available.Traditional Onsen Ryokan. Staff polite and friendly. Good command of english.
Western style room and in-room spa available. Very special design with separate foot spa. The room and spa have wonderful view to mountain.
THe dinner and breakfast was not outstanding, but acceptable
- Hon Nam (8/5): Convenient - 10 mins walk from train station. One of the public bath is just around the corner. Room is clean and comfortable. Small onsen.
- Hin Ki (10/5): A quiet place to stay - Warm welcome was received at the reception by an English speaking lady. But the server at restaurant can only speak limited English. The environment was quiet . Just a few minutes walk to a walking trail and river .
The staff came out to the parking lot and welcomed me.
I was satisfied with the bath, the travel, the correspondence of the employee and the smile anyway enough.
The room was very comfortable and the food was good. The broth was really delicious.
I wanted to come back here again.
- yuval_adler (10/5): Wonderful hotel at Kaga Onsen - Our room was a Japanese style Tatami room, slightly larger than usual, overlooking the great river down below. The room was very comfortable and warm.
There is free parking outside, and a very good wifi all over the hotel.
The hot springs are split between an indoor hot spring and an outdoor one, at different locations of the hotel.
Dinner was superb. Breakfast also was very good. Both Japanese style, and the chef catered to our needs.
- scootm393 (10/5): Amazing - My partner and I stayed here and it was a lovely experience. The rooms were quaint but the perfect experience.
The rooms overlook the river and the river path is a beautiful walk with the korogi and ayatori bridges.
This is one of the few onsens that allowed me to go to the public bath house during the quiet period with tattoos. Though the private bathhouse was just as good.
I don't normally talk about food in my japan reviews because it never fails to please. The set menu for dinner was great.
I would definitely reccomend a stay here and would come back again.
- clare (6/5): Tired room and corridors but lovely restaurant - We paid for the standard room with half board. Our room was a standard Japanese room with Japanese bedding as expected. The bathroom was quite modern and clean but the room felt a little tired and there was dust in the cupboards and corners.
The meals (dinner and breakfast) were very Japanese. That's not a negative thing for most people, the food was well presented and the staff very friendly, just I'm not a fan of raw fish. We hired the family onsen which was lovely.
Overall this was a nice hotel but could do with freshening up the rooms a little. The staff were lovely from meeting you in the car park, giving you a snack and drink on arrival, to the cherry blossom that falls on you when you walk in the hotel.
- Kelvin (10/5): Nice service from the staff - Warm greetings from the staff, hotel facilities are nice, dining experience is amazing
- Mark (8/5): Very nice stay - I was very pleased with the room and private bath. My only gripe is a rather large one. There was a constant buzzing noise that was impossible to drown out. I believe it was coming from the private bath area.
- Minentsai (10/5): Nice hotel and the best service - It's the first I have been with my mother there. People in the hotel are all nice and sweet, especially Mr. Tsai, he show us all beautiful sightseeings and the restaurants. Mr. Tsai made our trip much more interesting and much more adorable. And the hotel is full of traditional culture and the best hot spring. We are looking forward staying this hotel again.
- ReiserW (6/5): An average Onsen hotel - A traditional hot spring hotel and staffs are helpful. English is ok. The dinner (in their restaurant instead of in-room re service) is average. The facilities are a bit old comparing to others. There are 2 spa's and the open-air one was crowded around 5~6pm and 6~7am.
There are free hourly shuttle service from Kaga Onsen station (reservation needed), and returning shuttle at 8:40/9:40/10:40am.
- 9ma64 (2/5): Dusty hotel. - My first impression was dusty! Just dusty!
Without deep inspection, you can see a lot of dusts and some spider's webs. When Japanese mattresses (futons) were spread, dusts were flushed into the air. When I sat a chair, dusts were flushed into the air...
In the public bath, corpses of bugs were around there, even in the bath...
Probably, this trip was the first time for my baby. So, I might be too over-delicate to stay this type of hotels. I have less experience to stay this type of hotels. My impression may be too severe. Or may not be... I think you can stay more comfortable places with the same accommodation fee.
Probably, some of you don't care the above things at all. I have many experience to stay in hotels overseas. I stayed hotels at the similar level with very cheaper prices. It should be noted that please don't look forward to dinner and breakfast too much. I and my wife were disappointed...
# WiFi is available only near front desk.
