You really feel like you are in the middle of nowhere in this magical house. It looks very cool. The room with bathroom was very comfortable and rather spacious and comfortably warm. • Susan (10/5): - This is such a delightful departure from just a "hotel or motel" on one's journey. In fact, despite it's rural location, it is truly a destination. There are not word to describe how lovely this property is and how robust an experience one can enjoy here. Do yourself a favor and do not book a cookie cut-out accommodation, book here and enjoy the kind hospitality, the serene surroundings and the added amenities of spa services. We absolutely loved it and can't wait to go back!
• Raymond (10/5): - Stumbled on this place following a long drive. This place is spectacular. Very nicely restored. Built in 1907. Every detail including the furniture and decor is from the era. Great history! A view of Mt Hood. Breatfast was included. Can't say enough. Would definitely stay there again.
• Jerald (10/5): - The "bones" of Dufur are a 1900 farming community, now close enough to The Dalles to attract a few commuters but not close enough to be the stereotypical bedroom. The downtown, and the Balch Hotel are surrounded by Wheat fields. The best part is the outstanding hospitality of the staff... and of the community generally.

• Voyager26256859051 (10/5): Beyond compare - This quintessential historic hotel is beyond compare. The Balch Hotel has been my happy escape for 10+ years. As soon as I drive up to the gardens I go into relaxation mode. Josiah serves up a local beer on tap and I wander the peaceful grounds. Dinner is divine with wine and a locally-sourced menu. Don't forget the rhubarb dessert! All in an intimate pastoral setting with outdoor seating. The owners and staff treat everyone like royalty. Clawfoot tubs, chandeliers, art inside and out, and antiques in beautifully appointed rooms slow the world's mad pace.

The staff made sure we were comfortable. We enjoyed many of our meals, morning coffee, and nightcaps outside in the garden where sitting areas were set up. Thank you for a memorable stay! We can't wait to stay at the Balch again. There was nothing we didn't like!

Beautiful and comfortable patio area. Light breakfast included in price. Nice bar/restaurant across the street. Comfy AC in our room, even in hot weather. We had the bathroom en suite, which was spacious and clean.
• TomFromBellaire (8/5): nice stop on road trip - We spent the night at the Balch while on a cross country road trip. It was a nice change from interstate motels. This is an old hotel so, the rooms are small and basic. Dinner was good and the staff were friendly and helpful. Breakfast wa small basket with fruit, boiled egg, yogurt and pastry. It was good. We enjoyed it.

The Balch is a great place to unplug, unwind and recharge. The ownership and staff are the perfect hosts. The history of Dufur and the Balch go hand in hand. We will be back!!

• Brent (10/5): Best place to eat and stay within 50 miles in any direction - Fabulous revival of this century-old+ hotel. Much care has been put into the surrounding grounds to make it a peaceful respite from the freeway world. And the food is carefully crafted and delicious.
• 940angelines (8/5): Lovely overnight stay at the Balch. - Lovely overnight stay at the Balch. Accommodations were clean and beds/bedding were comfortable. Complimentary earplugs in the room were a nice touch (old buildings are noisy). I took a small fan which worked great for comfort and provided white noise. I'd consider the weather before visiting (July/August would not be optimal in a 100+ year old bldg.) We enjoyed the live music duo who played the night we stayed. The common areas both inside and out were very inviting. We had dinner there at the Bistro. Unfortunately they missed two attempts at cooking my partner's steak medium rare. It was well-done the first time, and rare (like, really rare) the second. But they comped both our meals and drinks (which was beyond our expectation, and a welcomed surprise). I think we'd go for the salmon cakes next time. We ambled across the street to The Ranger Station who served us delicious pub food (had a burger), and ice cold beer. Excellent service there from Shelly. There is a cute general store downtown featuring wine tasting from Shadowbuck (did not try - maybe next time), and an adorably quaint living history museum. The complimentary breakfast at the Balch was fresh and delicious - we were so happy to have freshly brewed coffee and warmed coffee mugs waiting for us in the morning. Overall it was a great experience, and we would definitely return.

Don't expect modern resort but you will get friendly authentic service provided by local people who bend over backwards to fulfill your needs and interests. Dufur is a very small old rural historical town in, what some would call, the middle of nowhere. If you want seclusion and enjoy country walks or bike rides and meeting really interesting people the Balch Hotel is for you as it was for us. The people really are fantastic. Debr helped us with a sticky situation because of some booking confusion and I can't say enough about her spirit of problem solving and meeting her customers need

• miriamoc2022 (10/5): Wonderful turn of the century small town hotel - This is our third visit to the Bolch hotel. Our fourth will be our wedding reception in October. It’s a charming classic turn of the century hotel. It’s extremely affordable and the people are kind and accommodating. Coffee and breakfast are provided in the morning for guests. While The town is really small, there’s a new market with a great deli and a spruced up bar with microbrews on tap. It’s a great area if you want some quiet, to go on a bike ride or just have some downtime and read a book

Can't beat the location: within easy driving distance to the Columbia Gorge, multiple hiking opportunities, and vineyards! And all at a reasonable price.

Note that many of the bathrooms are shared-luckily the hotel wasn’t full when we were there so no one to share with. They could do a lot better with decorating-getting some time-period/era art on the walls, instead of the tacky amateur art for sale. So much potential they are on a good start

• williamhI753QQ (10/5): Relaxation at It’s best! - We went for a Staycation! We sat in parlor and had wine! Then dinner! Amazing, the Chef Myron killed it! We had a charcuterie board and salad. My husband ordered the steak and I had the special (Shrimp Scampi)! We took 2 bottles of wine to the room. We were told we could go outside and sit by fire pits, but we opted to just go to our room. The room was perfect, actually sat and read some magazines, and got ideas for future adventures. The bed was super comfy! We did have a room with an attached bath, but honestly, it wouldn’t have been an issue with the shared baths. Had a great night sleep, got up for coffee and our complimentary Breakfast Basket! So nummy! Josiah and Claire are awesome! The entire staff was so hospitable! Can’t wait to come back and do the spa! This was relaxation at its best!

• Annika (10/5): Peaceful stay in beautiful historic hotel - We enjoyed the beautiful old building in the quiet town of Dufur a lot. Very well maintained with pretty details. Our room was comfy and it had all we needed. Breakfast was good too. Easy access to The Dalles but also Dufur itself has a lot to offer for anyone seeking peace and nature. Nothing.

The hotel grounds and outdoor patio area are top-notch. There are many interesting events all year long. The hotel is located in a small town and the area surrounding it is very picturesque.
• X3387BCmichaelm (10/5): Great home base for a weekend of cycling. - Beautifully appointed 1907 era hotel. Nice continental breakfast in the morning. Bistro 1907 on site for dinner. I road the Cycle Oregon Gravel ride when it was in Dufur a few years ago. That was my first introduction to the Balch. My wife and I came to check it out. Super Kool, we will be back. Great cycling/gravel rides; right out the front door. They have a barn on sight to lock up your bikes at night. Sweet set up. Great home base for a weekend of cycling. Plus, it's always sunny in central/Eastern Oregon.

Always a joy to be there, relax, and leave the troubled world behind for a while. We don't have to DO anything, just enjoy life and the hotel and the countryside and the birds and the animals.
• Thomas (9/5): Superb - The staff realized that I had severely sprained my ankle while riding my motorcycle and without saying anything to them they brought to my room a large plastic bag with ice the help heal my ankle. Having an elevator would of been nice.
• H7821AMtoml (10/5): Cyclists' Gem - We are return visitors. We are cyclists and the two times we've been there, we've met some really great cyclists and remain friends. They do a great job catering to cyclists, secure bike storage etc, and everything else is quaint and great. The riding in the area is absolutely amazing. Dufur in general is nice little gem centered around the Balch. Making it part of our regular cycling circuit.
• Y2751EXrachelc (10/5): Amazing - What a great little gem in the Columbia Gorge. So relaxing and fun. The rooms are so cute, and very clean. I recommend taking a bath in one of the claw foot tubs. Everyone working at the hotel were such nice people. Breakfast and dinner in the bistro were perfect.

• edwarddudlik (10/5): Wonderful historic hotel away from the hustle and bustle - A stay at the Balch feels like you're being transported back to simpler times (but still with good wifi). The staff and innkeeper are lovely and welcoming. The Bistro's dinner menu is small but refined, with something for everyone. There's not much in the way of other dining options in town, but it's a short drive to the Dalles if you need lunch or other dinner options. We enjoyed it so much that we already booked our next stay.
• 419kipc (10/5): Relaxing Geataway! - This historic hotel is a real gem. I came across it accidentally and it was one of the most delightful and unexpected travel discoveries I’ve ever experienced. Its historic ambiance is great, the room was very nice, the food was excellent, and the hosts were a delight. I can’t say enough good about it and I can’t wait to return. This is likely to become a regular getaway for me.

The vintage charm is so lovely, the hotel is clean and staff are very friendly. The grounds are wonderful and well kept, We’ve chosen to have our wedding reception there in 2025.

• Robin (4/5): Uncomfy but beautiful - Super hard bed, my husband could barely sleep and we woke up early just to get out of it. No AC on 3rd floor with it being 98degrees outside was not very fun. A whole lot of stairs so be prepared for that, shower took a long time to heat up water but at least it was an adorable claw foot tub. Place was a little creepy but that might appeal to you! Great check in/check out times! The rooms are adorable but just very uncomfortable honestly. BUT the outside is gorgeous, they have so many places you can sit out and eat and read your bible so that was lovely. BEAUTIFUL hotel, they've really upgraded the place. The shared bathrooms were fine and super cute. I liked having a sink in the room, was thankful for that. Walking distance to the store in town so that was convenient and nice. Breakfast was okay, still hungry afterwards. My husband still loved the stay even sleep deprived because he grew up in Dufur. I loved it because of its old charm and beautiful decor!

• Marcy (10/5): The Balch Hotel is a Magical Destination - The people who work at the Balch Hotel are the kindest and most helpful humans one could ever experience. I was a solo traveler but never felt alone. I cannot say enough about the wonderful people who make this place a magical destination. Nothing to declare.
• Elizabeth (10/5): We had a great time exploring the area (and we’re very happy the smoke from wildfires was not bad) - We loved the breakfast. Good variety and amount. Also enjoyed sitting outside on the lawn and patio. No complaints.
• David (9/5): Always enjoyable and inspiring. - This was our tenth or twelfth stay at the Balch. That means we like it a lot. Wonderful ambience of a classic western hotel, great staff; always helpful, courteous and eager to help. Beautiful grounds, patio and large lawn. Sweet breakfast. The dinners (optional) are superb, Saturday outside entertainment first class. The ONLY thing that could be better would be some king-size beds. It's difficult for us to sleep on a queen. Yes, I know there is one king size room.

I’ve never explored this part of Oregon and it was worth seeing I made the mistake of showing up a bit too early on a roadtrip, and the timing was a bit off, as this is basically a ghost town…You’re going to need to have something to entertain yourself— and you probably want to eat at their restaurant.

• Ansgar (10/5): Fabulous setting, nice people. Beautiful historical hotel. - Beautiful building, wonderfully maintained. Everything about the place is this charm. Wonderful staff. In the off-season a simple but delicious breakfast. Nice place to hang out and to socialize with interesting guests. The town itself doesn’t offer much, but I would assume everybody else, like us, stays there to explore the wider environment and to enjoy nature. For that it’s perfect. On foot, directly from the hotel, there is just a modernized grocery store to walk to and not much else. It’ll be even nicer when other non-institutional places establish themselves in the town.

• Eric (10/5): Balched in 2024 - My wife and I love this quaint hotel with great rooms, great decor, incredible common areas and awesome staff. Breakfast is healthy and sustaining, not quite what it used to be but still enjoyable. We love the entire experience.

• Dawna (10/5): - A gem in the tiny town of Dufur Oregon. If you are in the neighborhood and need a place to stay, this one is my recommendation!
• Amy (8/5): - If you like traveling back to a simpler time, this is a unique hotel for you along the Columbia River Gorge. It was a lovely setting and rooms were small, but quite comfortable and gave you an escape from the 21st century (no TV, turn of the century country appeal). A few simple improvements to make guest more comfortable would be to have forks out (no just spoons) for the breakfast and to have coffee out and ready by 6:00 am daily. Many early risers need that first cup before we develop a headache. On a Sunday there was no where to go in Dufur that had coffee, so it was a pretty painful wait to have a coffee pot out at like 7:45 or 8:00 am. Easy to do! Dinner, at Bistro 1907, however, was simple, but lovely, on a peaceful flowered garden patio. I will tell others the Balch is a good place to stay for historic charm. Thank you!

• Carol (7/5): Lovely location and grounds. Not ADA accessible. - We really enjoyed the outside patio and beverages. There is a beautiful view of Mt Hood from the balconies. The continental breakfast was really good. The room was comfortable. The private bathroom was a must have. All the staff was friendly and helpful. The hotel was very clean. This hotel does not have an elevator. Because my husband has mobility issues and we had to go up two steep flights of stairs to get to our room this was not the place for him. The bathroom has a claw foot tub which was lovely but he was unable to use it.
• Steve (9/5): Gorgeous, quiet, exceptionally clean with awesome staff - will stay here again. - A little off the main routes which was perfect. Very quiet, exceptionally clean, beautiful restoration of a 1907 hotel. Food was excellent and the staff was nothing short of awesome - best I’ve experienced in a very long time. There was zero I didn’t like - everything was great.
